Sounds like a fun weekend. You thought about a Quaiffe diffy?

    mike-
Had a good time :) I should come out more often.
Infact, I should join in on the fun as a "Novice". First, I've got to find a helmet to borrow,.... and training wheels :D

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Anytime you want dave, come on out. Heck I'd even let you drive the XT6 if you want! :)

diffy: Nah, I may get a rear LSD at some point, but with my R-compounds no need for LSDs at all. I may need to have the tranny re-built at some point but we'll see what happens.

hehe, I was thinking of running my '98OB :D
Let it have a time of its life before trading it in ...
who knows, it might show me something to keep it anyway :)
I'll probably be in a class on my own.

You could go for "quickest crossover", or something to that effect. Did you see any allroad quattros or XCs?

    -juice
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
you don't want a quaife if one of the wheels can leave the ground. that ends up with at best no LSD effect and at worst a busted quaife/torsen.

get a clutch-type rear LSD. or do something to the handling to keep that rear wheel on the ground... stiffer front springs or bigger front swaybar for example.

    -Colin
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
The XT6 never lifts the rear wheel off the ground completely. I am going to beef up the front sway bar in it, and there was an LSD option the 3.90 rear LSD so that is an option too. I run it in stock class so I can't do anything with the springs. I'd need to actually have the front left side digging well into the ground before the right rear would lift off the ground, lots and lots of wheel travel on the XT6. (in canada they could manually control the air-suspensions)

    Nope, none there.
Hehe rookie takes the "quickest crossover" ;D

You may want to check with your auto insurance carrier. I did review your case and I do not see much else we can do. It does appear to be something that was caused by outside influence. I'm sorry we could not help with this.

    Thanks!

That Camry was a rental! :)

    -mike
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
that's an interesting way to test drive before buying :)
and that answers the question about its tires squealing at every turn and on its way to one.

Found out those guys are semi-pro motorcyle racers, they were in town from somewhere and figured they'd just use their rental-car for some fun!

Dave - You and your gf look like you're in deep thought, or you're freezing. :)
[Dave thinking] "Hmm, maybe I should auto-x the OB. What kind of suspension is Loosh running again?". :)

    Dennis-
GF was freezing. Me, on the way there.
"Hmm" was the farthest I went - the chilling breeze froze the thought :)

So, when are you coming out to the Auto-X? :D

Yet another reason never to buy an ex-rental!

More car trouble. Leak in the exhaust. Anyone want to guess which car: the Miata, 626, or Forester?

I don't know. I've just been so busy lately. I'm trying to knock out some major yard work earlier this year, so I don't get stuck doing it in the summer.

I'm also deciding if it's really worth it. Driving around a bunch of cones in a parking lot, how much fun can you have? :-D
I'm more of a scenic, hilly, twisty drive or drive to the beach kinda guy. How many times do you usually go and how much is it?

I'm thinking it would be a good learning experience as to the limits of the driver - Me, and the car without messing up things (except cones) and lifes around in doing so.

    To spectate - FREE
    Participate, I think it's $25. Mike?

    Ding-ding, we have a winner!

$335 for a new midpipe and muffler, installed. I think that's the 5th repair in the last year or so (fuel system, axle boot, wheel hub/bearing, oxygen sensor, and muffler).

Patti: when are those 2003 Legacy 2.5 GTs arriving in dealers? Can you hurry them up, pleeeez?

when are the 2003 WRX coming on shore?
Will there be Yellow wagon?... Green?

    -Dave
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Is the rumor about a new yellow true?

The wife is driving Sandy now, so maybe I'll talk her into keeping that and get a rally blue wagon.

I gotta wait and see what Ken does first. We have a friendly East Coast/West Coast rivalry going. ;-)

    Hey all,

I've been absent from the boards of late - work and personal issues taking immediate precedent - but I do try to keep up with the posts. As with Dennis, yard work has reared its head again.

I'm also with Dennis on the auto-x issue, as well as how I like to do my driving. I'd still like to give it a try, primarily because the biggest step in getting more performance out of the car is to get more performance out of the driver. Auto-x seems to me to be a place where you can do that without putting yourself and the car into too much jeopardy. (Having said that yes, I did see the clip where one auto-x'er in a VW Golf instinctively stuck his arm out the window to brace and right as he got the car into a roll. Note to self: keep windows closed; car does not = kayak.)

My secondary interest in auto-x is the sheer novelty factor of doing it in a Forester. Being of the opinion that the Forester isn't an SUV but rather a tall, boxy Impreza 2.5RS wagon, I think the on-road potential of the car is very much underrated. Granted it's heavier, has a higher CG and higher Cd, but I think that at most safe over-the-road speeds the Forester can more than hold its own.

Sometimes I wish I could find a performance driving school that would let me use my own car, but any opportunity to improve my own comfort level with my daily driver in a controlled environment has to be a good thing.

    Ed
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well Auto-x ranges in price from $30-$40 for non members and $20-$30 for members. The nice thing is that you get to practice in a controlled environment and push your car past the limits so you know what it will do on the street. Also the times are so close that you yearn for an extra .25 of a sec just to beat the other guys in your class!

High Performance Driving Events (HPDE) are put on by NASA which are really cool. They are track events where you get an instructor for the whole day for your first event and get about 20-30 minutes or more of driving on a track such as Lime Rock or Watkins Glenn or Pocono or Nazareth. These events cost I think $200 for the day.

Once you do it though, be forewarned you'll be addicted.

    :)

Big news - we may be putting the 626 up for sale. Those who have been following this saga know how big that decision is. Anyone want a '95 with 74k miles? V6, 5 speed, moonroof, leather, ABS, alloys, the works.

The wife may drive Sandy until we find a suitable replacement. She's 6 months pregnant so the 2nd generation air bags are safer for her right now anyway. Old timers here may recall that was the subject of my letter to Drive - wife drove Sandy while she was expecting last time, too.

What are we shopping for? 5 speed sedan. Well, she set the price limit way low, and may be willing to sacrifice leather. So we may be testing driving a Legacy sedan, L and maybe GT. I hope she likes it!

We priced a Camry SE, but it's more money for less power and no AWD. Accord is a sitting duck. Altima got terrible side crash test scores, and she doesn't like the clear tails.

So we'll sample a Legacy, and if not then maybe a Forester when those arrive. Pilot and Highlander are out of our price range. I may sneak her into a WRX wagon, hint that I'd be willing to make the sacrifice and give her Sandy. ;-)

I'm excited just thinking about it!

Could you get a 2.5GT now knowing that there will likely be more h.p. around the corner?

SoA just can't get us that h.p. quick enough!

Has she been in a WRX yet? Good luck selling and shopping.

    -Dennis
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
At this point I don't think she's willing to spend $25k, and the H6 has no 5 speed offered with it, so I can't convince her to spend more money (her target is $20k or less) for something she doesn't want (automatic).

    -juice
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
    juice,

Cool! You're finally moving on with your car plans. Yeah, lots of big sacrifices there! ;-)

So 5-speed sedan for $20K or less is her ideal, right? Whats the Impreza 2.5RS go for these days?

    Ken
  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
Dennis: DrivingDynamics might be a good option. The track day options that you and paisan offer may help too. Too bad they're only good for insurance discounts in NJ. Thanks for the link.

juice: Please don't take offense but, based on your description of the 626 as a money pit, I don't think many of us here would be interested in it. I find the change in your(her) target vehicle interesting to say the least. I'd suggest you sell the 626 outright - or maybe donate it as tax writeoff? - put the missus in the Forester and drive the Miata at least until the fall. Be patient and test drive the new Subaru offerings before you decide.

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
She wants room, even the Legacy may be a bit small for her. I think I'm convincing her, slowly. The test drive would be the slam dunk.

Ed: I fixed it all, I swear! ;-)

It has been dealer serviced (except oil changes, which I did), with all receipts, and never has been in an accident, not even a fender bender.

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
...but just a few posts earlier you wrote:

"$335 for a new midpipe and muffler, installed. I think that's the 5th repair in the last year or so (fuel system, axle boot, wheel hub/bearing, oxygen sensor, and muffler)."

    I am not a 626 expert but I can spot a trend.

Do be patient; if anything you can report to us on how the Forester does carrying 2 kids!

BTW there's been a titanium Legacy GT sedan with rear wing parked in my office lot yesterday and today. What a pretty car - but Pat could tell you that already ;).

    Ed
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Oh, I wouldn't sell it to any OCD club member. ;-)

I'm debating whether to E-bay it or use Cars.com. Any suggestions? What fees does E-bay charge?

I'd buy Pat's GT in a second, if he wanted to get that 2003 he's been eyeing.

    -juice

PS I've had 3 kids in the Forester, when my brother visited. :-)
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Ah, she wants something roomy. I think the Legacy L is the closest bet then. The GT would be even nicer, but would you be able to bear the news of a turbo GT right after your purchase? :-)

Have you thought about consignment based used-car lots? Basically you negotiate a price to sell your car with the dealer within a certain time frame. Whatever the dealer sells above the price is their profit. The dealer maintains your vehicle while it sits on their lot and takes care of all the paperwork. Pretty handy.

    Ken
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I wouldn't bear it. ;-)

Hmm, consignment? I'd not even heard of it.

    Juice,

Take your wife for a test drive in the WRX. She just may become a convert. A couple of months ago I took my wife for a test drive in the sedan, and she came away liking it alot. We even agreed that we liked the silver wagon even more. Now if only she would finally get her license so that she can take over the OB, and I can get the WRX wagon:-)

So don't give up hope yet!

Unless I win a lottery, the Titan is with me until the year 2011, I am not putting very many miles on now so it would be daft to change.

Besides I am really enjoying this car, I do not think a new one would give me any more enjoyment.

    Cheers Pat.
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
Very exciting. You deserve a new (fill in blank). Might be worth the wait to see what the fall brings and the tires will be new then to tackle the snow we won't get. ;)

On another note, I found out a guy that plays hockey with us once in a while has a legacy he uses to rally cross. Saw it at the rink this weekend - roll bar, advertising all over, etc. Need to talk with him Thursday (our next game) to get the details. Oops - that means I miss the chat again. Really upset I missed last week's chat.

    Pat: rats! ;-)

I think I can talk her up to a GT sedan at this point. She used to put a wool blanket under her because the leather was cold, so what would be better than heated cloth? Also, she wants a moonroof, so we'd add a $1000 aftermarket roof on the L anyway.

My catalog is a 2000 for the Legacy. What does the 2002 GT sedan add besides the 4.11:1 final drive, the rear LSD, moonroof, fog lights, body color trim, leather steering wheel and shifter, 16" alloys, and heated seats?

I know I'm usually the one doing research, but did I miss anything? The lit key ring, too, right? Oh, and wood trim (which she likes).

    Anything else?

Heated seats are on the '03 GT, not the current one.

sounds to me like you'll either bust your budget or have to scale things back, juice. although invoice on a 5MT Legacy GT is only $21,500 or so...

    is used an option?

Upgrade to Catz Galaxy Whites so the wife can see better, Winter Tires from tirerack for your wife and child's safety (those RE92s don't stick too well on ice or crusted snow). Plan on getting Hella horns since the stock aren't loud enough to get her through traffic while she is in labor. That's another $600 to budget for later.

    -BG
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
The shiny 98 Forester S comes with Hella Supertones standard. Plus it has the Philips Vision plus bulbs to saftely illuminate the roads at night, Sony and Polk speakers to bring Elmo to new highs, Kartboy shifter and 18mm rear sway bar for sporty driving and tinted windows to sheild your wife from harmful UV rays. ;-)
