    WRX rims, eh?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
it's funny. No matter who I race with (NASA, SCCA, or other clubs) I always seem to take 2nd place. I've got about 10 2nd place victories and 1 first place (the first place was actually with the AT XT6 last year) Hopefully I'll pull off at least 1 1st place this year.

The OB is a lot of fun on the auto-x, and it feels real nice to be in an AT!

I've ridden with you, and your foot never leaves the throttle so I don't think the tranny matters much with your driving style. ;-)

    Whoo-hoo! Alright Dave!!

You need to work on that tan, though! ;-p

    Ken-
hee hee :D that's my poor impression attempt of the Outback (Two Tone). I was trying to pick up some sun to get the vanilla cream to match with the caramel ;-)

    Guys/Gals-
    Whoo-hoo!!! indeed :D
Double whoo-hoo with the Outback rolling on Toyo RA1s (wrapped around WRX rims.) Disappointed that I'd hit a cone on my last run, which would had placed me third right behind mike. :( But.... all in all, I had plenty of fun out there. :)

I can't comment on the pics - I have to be nice to Dave as I will likely have to borrow one of his helmets on Sunday. I can assure you I will not be posing for beefcake shots, though ;-p .

    Body by Subaru...

Actually, we're outdoorsy so maybe you should show the "after the tan" shot. ;-)

Yesterday I was in a meeting with some of Greg's buddies from his company Applied Materials. I asked them to pass on my regards to Greg, as I had not seen him in some time. They told me that his mother-in-law had passed on after a long battle with cancer (?), and that he was out helping his wife deal with the loss.

Greg: My condolences to you and the family....

    Greg,

My condolences also. Earlier this year, I had to help my wife with the sudden loss of her father. I know how difficult it can be.

Still haven't found a buyer :( Sold off the WRX wheels and dropped the price to $1500. Hopefully this will yield better results! :(

When do you actually pick up the SVX?

What is she replacing it with?

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I can pick it up whenever I get the $, basically I'm gonna flip the plates from the XT6 to the SVX. She's looking at a saturn sedan, and a sonata. She needs to be able to seat 4 + have the wheelchair in the back. Unfortunately we don't think an OBS would fit it. Not sure what else she is looking at. Looking for something 2-3 years old I think.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I take it she also wants a 6 cylinder, given she's coming out of one?

The H6 Outback sedans start at about $25k, but you probably won't find a used one for much less than that because they're newer models.

You can get L sedans cheap, they start at just $16,876 at fitzmall.com. $19,665 for a 2003 L/SE automatic, and that has 16"s and the moonroof!

Chat reminder - see you folks tonight?

    mike-
what's the price range she's looking at?

    -Dave
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
She's looking to get something in the 10-12K range. Also planning on buying an extended warranty on it. She'd like a 6, but most likely will get a 4. Really likes the sonota w/leather.

at the risk of running rampantly OT, why would anyone buy a used hyundai?

    -Colin
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
and decent quality. My dad has a used '97 Sonata that has been great. Bought it @ 50K for $5K so far he's at 75K and no problems. My mom likes it better than the '97 Legacy we have cause it's roomier.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Keep something in mind, folks. When you buy a used car, depreciation is a good thing, not bad, because it simply means you pay less.

BTW, you get the 5/60 B2B warranty, but not the 10/100, so that's why she'd look at an extended one.

Subies don't depreciate much, so you may as well buy new. In this area, even my '98 Forester is still worth $11-12 grand, while you could get a Sonata 2-3 year newer for that much.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
She was looking at the Focus as well since it fit her wheelchair, but the used are almost as much as new!

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
    Greg: Please accept my condolences.

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
paisan: A used Forester might be good for her, although her rear seat passengers may feel a bit compromised.

    Ed
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Her chair would fit behind the 2nd row w/2nd row intact. Also I think in upstate NY used Foresters that you can get a warranty on are probably expensive :(

    Greg, my condolences.

Steve, good luck with the adoption.

Ken, RPN rocks! Which HP division makes the calculators now? Cut my programming teeth writing SPL on an HP 3000 running MPE. Ah, the dark ages of the command line, pre-Windoze .. Wait, I miss my command line.

Loosh, Maybe Subaru should introduce a new color -- Beaune White Pearl. (ugh, that was bad)

I'm back from the Outer Banks. Picked up some tar on the inside of the GT rims.. clay to the rescue!

My sympathies to you and your family. My Dad passed away very suddenly last year...a few days before Christmas. It's been a rough time for my Mom...and for all of his kids, too.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
    Mike,

RPN is the way calculators were meant to be. I actually have trouble using a 'standard' calculator -- what's with the equal sign anyway?

I'm not sure which HP division makes the calculators, though. Agilent spun off of HP two years ago and since then we've been completely separate companies. I don't know what's going on in Carly-land.

Greg, our condolences to you and your family. My wife lost her father quite unexpectedly some time back, and it's been hard on all of us. We're closer now though, and we hold him in our memories.

Steve, good luck with the adoption. We've been wrestling with this issue for quite a while ourselves. It can be very emotional at times. My sister-in-law has adopted twice (stateside), and has a wonderful family. Well worth the "rollercoaster".

Greg: Sincerest condolences from my family to you & yours. Been through the parent-loss struggle with both Grace's dad & my mom, so we understand the feelings. Take care, and hugs all around.

mike: the Forester's cargo is actually pretty long, I bet the wheelchair would fit easily. They definitely gave the cargo area the priority over rear seat space.

But yeah, she'd have to look at a '98 most likely, to be in her price range.

Mike: (note the capital "M", for Mike Smith) since you waxed the rims, the tar should come off without too much work. See, it was worth it!

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
And my guess is that a 98 is past the point where she could get an extended warranty on it :( Since she is older she doesn't want to have to deal with repair bills so she needs something in the low price range, but new enough that she can buy the warranty. Hopefully something will pop up.

heh, I know what you mean. I've got an HP-16C programmer's calculator (no longer sold). It supports, if you can believe it, two's complement arithmetic and one's complement (!) arithmetic (which has two zeroes (positive and negative); minus zero was a bane for assembly programmers). I used a Univac 1108 (mentioned in the 2nd link) in my assembly class at the University of Maryland. I had to use punched cards (ugh).

My class of '90 was the last at U of MD where Assemby Language was required. These kids have it easy nowadays...

But I didn't have to use punch cards, so you probably think I had it easy! LOL

My HP 48SX got me through high school and college and I'm never giving it up.

It's funny to watch someone who has never used RPN try to do anything with it though.

sorry to hear about you mother-in-law... my Mom died when I was young... I still feel I've not recovered completely.

    G'day

I am still mourning the demise of my HP 41CV. The screen cracked and HP do not carry parts. I can't believe it - it was only 20 years old - what's the world coming to?

Its's a pity because I haven't found anything else which is as practical. I was using an HP 12 yesterday but even that is not much use. Too finance specific for my liking. Might have to look at a TI version

    Cheers

Last thing I used mine for was for a TSD rally. I programmed in the magic formula for TSD rallies and used it to do the calcs. Hey that brings it on topic!

I remember my engineering professor back in college show the class a slide rule. It must have taken ages to do problem sets back then! Glad I had my 42S!

Yeah, it's pretty funny watching someone try RPN for the first time.

Heard this from a 20 year veteran, but when HP began integrating more of the components on their calculators, they found that the units were becoming too "light". They apparently added weights into some models so that they would retain their original "feel".

Found this link for those who wanted to read up on every HP calculator made:

    help!
i'm thinking of buying a 1996 legacy wagon. i love it, the only catch is that it has almost 113,000 miles. dealer is selling for $4900. i've never owned a subaru.
i need advice on this subaru with high miles.
    is it worth it?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That is pretty low. I'd have to see it to know if it's worth $4900, but my guess would be that it's worth at least $4500. Is it AWD? AT? Everything look perfect? Has it had it's 2nd timing belt yet? etc.
