    Pat, hope you're recovering.

Guess I'll pass on steak this evening.

And no jokes 'cause I bet it's really painful to laugh.

Its too painful too do much, I will be in the sack early tonight, I cannot believe the experience took so much out of me I feel totally exhausted at the minute, as well as sore as hell.

    Cheers Pat.

whoa! hope you feel better soon Pat. my ribs are still sore from the dirtbike incident last week (documented in the Cafe', if you missed it)... and today after a nice choking-like-I-inhaled-water coughing fit, a co-worker said... "do you think that might be a symptom of a partially collapsed lung?"

bah. I suppose an xray would tell for sure, but I really don't think so. I'll give it another week, unless the pain gets worse or I get some other symptoms like a fever, dizzyness, etc.

Heavens Pat, that's terrible, but obviously could have been much worse. Rest well.

Colin, you know what to do.

is still open, although its future is in serious doubt. It's the only plant that makes Chevy's mid-sized Astro Van (now where have we heard that name before?), and its GMC sister van. Once they stop production, there's nothing yet slated to be built there.

Pat: Glad you're okay. Hope it was a choice cut of meat!

Colin: Take care of yourself and get it checked out.

  • hammersleyhammersley Member Posts: 684
Pat: Rest & recover well, knowing you spelled esophagus correctly.

Colin: An X-ray doesn't hurt, 'cept maybe the part where they make you take a really deep breath. Could be irritated tissue from a pulmonary contusion, or as your colleague suggested, a little pneumothorax. Either way, a cough that bad after trauma to the same neighborhood deserves a look. Take care.

    Cheers!

I'm not sure it's where it's assembled, but the overall mentality of the workers/management of US auto makers leads to a less then stellar reliability. It could also have to do with the Unions as well, they don't help matters and most foreign car makers that assemble here don't have unions. Tolerences are also a big thing, my personal feeling is that they are much tighter on foreign cars than domestics.

Pat & Colin - just read the news. Hope you two are feeling better. This crew had better start taking better care of ourselves, or we're all in trouble!

I just saw a post from Patti also - how is your back???

What year is your SVX again? Have you ever seen the original ('92) sales brochure and magazine article compilation?

    Steve
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I have the Road and Track dedicated magazine for the '92 :) And have several articles clipped as well. I haven't read it cover to cover yet but it's definitely some winter reading material.

I hope you feel better soon!

Resale and reliability are a big part of the decision to be sure, but as a 32 year old planning to start a family at some point and who wants something fun to drive....what, exactly, am I expected to consider from the big 3? Maybe the Vibe I suppose, but even that is a thinly disguised Toyota. Ok, points for the SVT Focus ZX5, but reliability there is a BIG issue and SVTs don't exactly hang on to their re-sale. Um, what else....................hmmmmm........errr.............*shrug* nope I think that's about it.

Pat - Hope you're feeling better soon.
Colin - Go to the doctor.

I think the NY Times article is out today. There were not any quotes from consumers. Only results of a survey. Didn't take time to read it yet.

Hang in there Pat, and next time choose grilled turbot instead!

I just had my flu shot yesterday, so start looking out for those if you do it annually.

Bob: where is that plant? In the city, near the old Memorial Stadium? We should visit, just to see how Subarus were built 20 years ago. ;-)

Patti's surgery is postponed until November while she considers alternatives.

Loosh: they ought to make a Focus SVT wagon, those are practical and roomy. Then there's the PT turbo, and CR actually gave the PT a big red dot, so reliability looks promising (plus a 7/100 warranty). And the Vibe GT.

Depreciation tanks, but at least you're not spending much to begin with. Except the PT turbo.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Make sure to read the DC limits on that 7/100 warranty. It's not all it's cracked up to be from what I've heard. (high deductibles, limits, etc)

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Allow me to correct myself, it's actually a 7/70, and yes there is a deductible. IIRC it was just $50 or so.

I thought the PT had a lot of cheap plastics, though. For under $20k the turbo could be competitive, but aren't those more like $23k?

is off Broening Highway, in Dundalk, on the east side of Baltimore, near the harbor. It's a very blue-collar, industrial area. The plant is a dinosaur, for sure. The outlook for a future GM product to replace the Astro Vans looks bleak.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I had a college buddy that was from Dundalk, definitely not the nicest part of town.

    -juice
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I think the next version of the full-sized vans will probably fit it nicely they are gonna have AWD apparently.

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They need to modernize the plant, probably strip it and start over, to install the latest technology.

They were using very old equipment, and that meant costs were high. So they cut future R&D investments and improvements to keep costs down temporarily. They've done that long enough now that GM would have to start over.

I read about that in Automotive News.

<< The outlook for a future GM product to replace the Astro Vans <B>in that factory looks bleak. >>

I'm sure they have product to replace that vehicle. It, however, will most likely be built elsewhere.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hope not, that would be a blow to the Baltimore economy.

    -juice
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
That whole area of East Baltimore would be severely impacted if they lose GM. They're very worried about that.

is reporting that a rifle with scope has been found in the trunk of the 2 suspects arrested this morning..they say that it is the type that fires .223 caliber ammo.Hopefully for all you guys in the DC area and your families, the danger is over for now.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
I was following CNN this morning. I know where the rest stop is, that they were arrested at. It's about 25 miles west of where I live on I-70. I live about 2 miles off I-70.

We just heard that news also .... man, I hope they got the guy(s)!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It looks better and better, they may have finally nabbed them.

My daughter will love being able to play outside again, finally.

I wish you a quick recovery. You're in my prayers.

Well, I found out - no way out of the surgery. Keep your fingers crossed on 11/4 when they are going to fix me up.

THANK GOD THAT THEY LOOK LIKE THEY'VE SOLVED THE SNIPER CASE. I have been so worried about all of our Southeastern friends (Juice, et al).

I'll try to post when I'm having good hand time, but I am reading.

And toes, too, Patti. Good luck! If half of your fans here sent flowers there would be no room for you in your hospital room.

    Steve
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    In the entire hospital, actually.

We'll be thinking of you on the 4th.

Pat: My gosh! That sounds awful! Hope you're feeling better soon.

Colin: I concur with the rest of the Crew "doctors"....you should see one asap!

Patti: I'll be flinging a mass quantity of pixie dust and a few prayers for you on 11/4. I hope it all goes well.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
I sure hope they're close to closing the sniper case. I heard that Prez Bush was informed that they were reasonably close to solving it. The two men they arrested are still only suspects, correct?

Patti -- I'll be wishing the best for you on 11/4!

From top.com (D.C. news radio station):

"...A 41-year-old Army veteran and a teenager described as his stepson were arrested at a roadside rest stop Thursday for questioning in the three-week wave of deadly sniper attacks that have terrorized the Washington, D.C., area. A law enforcement source said a gun found in their car appeared to have the same caliber as the one used in the shootings.

The official said police also found a scope and a tripod in the car. Police were awaiting ballistics tests on the gun.

"We're positive it's these guys," the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. ..."

Good luck with the surgery. Been stitched up a few times but the only time I was under general anesthesia was for sinus surgery in November '99. Wasn't fun but the results were worth it.

I so hope they've got the right guy but fear copycats may arise.

Nope, no quote this time. She did write about what she and I discussed (we got a $750 incentive on the Legacy), though:

There are special deals available on some import brands, too, but for the most part the numbers are much smaller and the incentives are not the centerpiece of marketing

The full story, but you have to register first:

Thanks guys for the good wishs, it was a scary experience, I was having trouble breathing, especially when trying to talk, not enough air to breath and talk, hopefully the stretching of the esophagus will preclude any more food sticking.

I am still really sore from the obstruction, and I guess all the instuments that were down my throat did not help.

Colin do not screw around with symtoms like that, get to the doctor and get checked out.

Patti, my prayers and thoughts will be with you on the 4TH, I have had major back surgery and it was no picnic, I sincerely hope they are able to get you fixed up properly.

    Cheers Pat.

Good news that the ballistics match on the weapon seized ... bad news the numbers that were killed

I'm gonna be the bigger man and just say that I'd much rather see Juice as Captain Hook. Mr. Smee, even. NOT Tinkerbell.

It so happens that I have the sales brochure (large format booklet - maybe 12"x12") for the '92 SVX. I am not in a position at this time to part with it (strange obsession - lets not go there today), but I might be able to copy it if you do not have access to one.

  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
Pat, glad you're OK...Colin...get X-Rays taken ASAP...Patti, the best of luck on the 4th...our thoughts are with you.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Pat: chew, chew, chew. I think noone really chews their good enough.

Note that Ed didn't say "respectively". And believe me, you do NOT want to see me dressed up as Tinkerbell. Pippy Longstocking, maybe, but not Tinkerbell. ;-)

'Twas a great chat, though. I was ROTFL when Pat suggested I get "snipped" do avoid having to get the wife an Expedition!

Besides, two kids are already a handful!
