It's good to hear that you are on the mend. I hope you are back to 100% before too long.
    Hang in there!

To enter Town Hall and find oneself the object of discussion I do not always like. ;-)

Maybe it's all that German I took in college. Been taking Italian lessons this fall and drawing the parallels between it and the other major European languages. I find German, Dutch and English to be the closest phonetically, but it seems that German is the only one that the verb at the end of the sentence puts.

I just read the news here. My condolences about Kovey. Our thoughts are with you and Kirsten.

Spooky that Riley knew something was wrong.

The dog is still wigged a little- she overturned the trash in the bathroom, and she also carried our electric toothbrush downstairs and destroyed it. She hasn't done something like THAT in about 6 years.
It does feel emptier around here, although that may just be the sudden absence of fur balls.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Ed: quite disturbing that is.

I'm fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, and can understand some Italian if spoken slowly (I don't have to read subtitles in movies, usually). But they're all latin languages, so the transition is easy. French has me stumped, though.

Hadji adjusted very quickly when Ashley left us for doggie heaven, though I can't explain why. Just give Riley some extra attention.

Ok WHAT IS GM SMOKING with this "return of
Harley Earle's Ghost" Buick ad campaign?!? People who actually know who he is must be mortified at the cheesy attempt to sell POS cars with totally stone age engines and suspensions. The rest (i.e. 99.9%) of the buying public has NO idea who the guy is and couldn't care less. THIS is the company that has a peice of FHi, mind you!

Home sick in bed today, so I've watched more tv than I have in like the last 3 months. I've seen two of these dazzlingly stupid ads now, including one where all these Buicks are running around a NASCAR track for cryin' out loud. Give me a break. If I were an Earle I would sue those people into the next millenium. As if GM has a right to "resurrect" the guy and put their words into his mouth. Just a deeply, spectacularly brain dead ad idea.

I was very sorry to read about your cat. It has to be very difficult to get through something like that. You are in my thoughts.

chatting with you all last night. Sorry I couldn't stick it out for the whole time. I'm sure I'll be able to hang out longer next week. Now, how do we start sharing all of those fine recipes I heard about?

Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for all of your nice thoughts. I'm doing fine!

How are you doing!? Been wondering how your recovery is going. Did everything go as planned with the procedure? Are you going to be just like new?

    Get well soon!

We all love the confidence our Subarus provide in snow and I had such an adventure last weekend on a hunt in NW Colorado with a strong Pacific storm arriving. In town one of the party looked at my Outback and asked "is it 4-wheel drive?" Talk about a truck town! I was following my outfitter who had a one ton Dodge with dual rear wheel rig pulling a horse trailer. The higher we got the deeper and more intense the snow was. I was thinking someone will have to pull my car out if it isn't driven out within an hour or two. Then the Dodge got stuck and the outfitter ask if he could drive my Subaru back to get cell phone reception to get help with his stuck rig while the rest of us rode on to the camp. In a few moments my thoughts went from "I'm going to be a problem" to "Wow, Subaru to the rescue!" I did put on the chains just to be sure the exit was secure.

My brother-in-law tells the story of how he and his then girlfriend got caught in a CO snowstorm in her Subaru a few years back. The snow was so deep it was "flowing up over the hood", as he puts it, but that little car never gave up, and they got home safely.

I'm not sure of the model, but it was a sub-compact AWD model from the early 90's if I'm not mistaken.

Never underestimate a Subie in the snow :-)

Good to hear from you. I wish you luck in your recovery. Although not as serious as your ordeal, my wife just fractured her shoulder which brought me home early from Paris. Of course, having only one arm now, she prefers to drive the Subaru (which means I don't get to drive it much)!

6to8 inchs down overnight and the same amount again forcast before it all over tomorrow morning, is this Gods idea of a joke? It is too damn early to be up to our armpits in snow.

    Cheers Pat.

Well a few comments. It was very very cold and rainy on saturday! Unfortunately AZP had scheduled a few appointments and were determined to get all the work done. Note to self: Start with the left rear WRX springs/struts, a psycho Japanese dude put them on!

We worked on several projects saturday:

1 set of Eibach Lowering Springs on '02 WRX
1 set of rear DMS Coilovers
1 set of STi Engine Mounts
1 set of Whiteline swaybars and kartboy shifter

The Eibach springs took almost as long as all the other stuff! The left rear strut would not let the bolts go no matter what we did. We tried impact wrenches, 4'-5' breaker bars, hammers, etc. Finally we had to use a torch and heatup the nuts to get em broken free. This was all out in the street under a tent during the noreaster.

Thanks to Hypov for providing the heated wating room!

You need a carport or a garage or something. So you guys are expanding the helping-out-with-mods business, eh?

Loosh: you're right, I'm a total car nut and had no idea who Harley Earle was. Buick seems ready for extinction, they are cars for old folks, an image noone wants to have. Push rod engines, full-size FWD cars? No unique products? No wonder the median buyer age is in the 70s. And what does Buick have to do with NASCAR nowadays anyway?

Roy: cool story, Outback saves Dually. Hilarious. You should have gotten pics. Remember Dave Chen's Outback pulling that 4Runner out of that mud pit?

Greg: here's to a quick recovery for your wife. Doesn't sound like fun. Bummer to cut the vacation short, too. How was Europe before the shoulder injury?

Pat: send some snow down here. All we've had is rain. Lots and lots of rain.

We actually had one in the garage and a carport-like tent over the one in the street!

Thankfully it wasn't too cold out.

Well, I was well aware of who he was. I guess there are some advantages of being a geezer. ;)

Born and raised in the US - isn't Harley Earl a guy who rides a Hog? What era was this guy from? 50s, 60s? I read Road & Track magazine since the late 60s and never heard of him. (Maybe if I read Motor Trend???)

mike - sounds like that rear strut was installed by an ex-sumo wrestler!

was named head of GM's newly created Art and Color Section (their design dept) in 1927. He was responsible for all of GM's design up until 1959, when he retired. Earl was probably the most influential car designer of his era.

He was then succeeded by the flamboyant Bill Mitchell. The original '63 Corvette Sting Ray, Mitchell designed. Mitchell was then succeeded by Chuck Gordon. I think(?) Wayne Cherry is now in charge of GM's design department.

Obviously, this Harley Earl campaign is aimed at people of my generation—which is perfect for Buick...

Bob, thanks for the links. I'm not THAT far behind your generation! Do you remember the annual GM Design/Styling contests where high school students submitted wooden models?

So he was the one behind Corvettes and tail fins. Quite a legacy.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Considering how bad the latest designs have been, I can see why they'd bring him back, then. But to pitch the current line? C'mon, offer fresh product for him to pitch, at least.

It's like the Cadillac "Been a Long Time" series of ads. I liked it when it applied to the CTS, but then they started using the ads for the FWD Seville and Deville. The entire reason it's been a long time is because those two cars are FWD!

Loosh, I not surprised at all. Living out in the country, my vet's office has been kind enough to come to our home when it has been "time". While in the act of administering the shot to Ginger (Shepherd mix) in the sun room some years ago, Max (full Shepherd) carried on and cried like a baby from the back door. It just broke my heart. They know.....

I gotta say, putting a pup to sleep can be very humane.

Ashley had a stroke last year and was paralyzed one one side and on both rear legs. She could not eat or drink, her body was stiff like the worst case of arthritis you'd ever seen. Clearly it was time.

I took her in, bawling like a baby (me, not her), and the SPCA put her down. It was quick and painless, she didn't even flinch. Her body relaxed and only the I realized how stiff she had been all along.

It was a very hard thing to do, but we had a great 7 years with her, and since she was adopted we probably saved her from the same fate, just 7 years earlier.

I can't explain how or why, but Hadji bounced back so quick it was amazing. Perhaps he had to compete less for our attention.

The problem with the GM campaign is: besides myself and perhaps a few other GM historical nuts, few people have a clue as to who he is, or, how important he was to GM and their success up until around 1960—as indicated by many posts here...

Jim, yes, I (barely) remember the GM styling contests.

They spread what LITTLE weight a pick-up has in the rear over four tires instead of two and you can't get any traction. I saw my first dually pickup about 10 years ago in an icy parking lot. On flat ground the rear tires were spinning so bad that the owner had to put the rig into 4 wheel drive to get across the lot. They were the only vehicle having problems and vowed that I would never own one.

I am glad that your Outback could come to the rescue.

    Ray
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I guess on a dually you have to have weight on that rear axle, it's meant to tow.

is that they are bringing this legend back from the dead to say things about the current line-up he wouldn't be caught, er, dead saying for real!!!!

I got a quote a couple of weeks ago and they were more expensive than my current carrier (Amica-NY). (Geico is a lot cheaper)
  • ken_from_njken_from_nj Member Posts: 105
used to have them back 10 years ago - i thought they sucked. married a mil brat & now have access to usaa - very good - if you have access to this insurance - i highly recommend it. just my thoughts. going to OH this weekend - should be fun to take the new 03 forester on the roadtrip. current milage is 1850 - will report the mpg after the good 6.5 hour highway drive
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Loosh: did you call them yet? 800-507-7561.

Keep in mind they offer OE parts, while most places will force you to use cheaper aftermarket parts once the car is a couple of years old.

Let her open up, Ken, it's good to stretch those legs a bit.

I'll second Ken's comment about USAA. We have auto, home, and life insurance through them. They provided great service on the few claims we've made.
  • royallenroyallen Member Posts: 227
Juice: I wasn't prepared with camera. The dually had plenty of weight on the rear axle with six horses in his 5th wheel trailer, plus a substantial drag to add to the traction problem.
  • originalbitmanoriginalbitman Member Posts: 920
Finsihed all the prep including 30k service (air & gas filters, fluids flush, oil & filter, plugs), new tires, alignment, and a wash & wax (including inside of rims). Thursday we leave on another road trip. Third this year. This one to Florida for 6K miles. That will be 18k in road trips this year alone!!!

Can't wait. See you folks in a couple of weeks.
