    Actually, the drive is the best part. We take a lot of two lane and enjoy the relaxed pace, wonderful sites and small towns (ever read Blue Highway?). Through these road trips we have really gotten to appreciate the diversity of the lower 48. Sounds corny but this truly is a beautiful country. Perhaps more importantly we get to take our only child along... a 10 year old golden/border mix named Augie. Great travel dog who has a way of finding the right places to stop. He has around 50-60k travel miles on him now.

    I much prefer to drive.

    The time it takes to get to the airport, park, take the shuttle to the terminal, arrive 2 hours before the plane leaves, of course, then fly, then hail a cab, then finally get to your destination, can add several hours to your flight time.

    I think up to 300 miles you're better off driving. Maybe even more.

    Plus we take Hadji, too. :-)

    PS I forgot the time it takes to take your shoes off so they can search them. What happened to our civil rights? As if that really makes flying safer.

    juice, I agree that a six hour drive beats flying the same distance. (But it depends on what car too.)

    I just need to recalibrate from "just get there" to "the travel IS the experience".

    Bit is truly one who should check out chowhound.com for eats along the way!

    My wife was trying to convince me a train ride was better. Wouldn't you know it, our train got stuck in Newark for 2 hours, didn't move an inch.

    Though since then I've been (with Bob, actually, to the NY Auto Show) and it was fine. Also better than a plane.

    Last time when I flew from Baltimore to NY, it was on one of those teeny tiny turbo props -- not a lot of fun. Luckily, it's a short flight.

    Speaking of travel, I'm going to be in Japan in about two weeks from now. I'll try and swing by the Subaru showroom, but I'm going to be a ways outside of Tokyo this time.

    Any info I should try and find?

    Bit- wow I'm jealous. About once a year Q and I get to the point where we just need to get out....grab a handful of wheel and just let the odometer roll for a weekend.

    Ken- yea, a set of JDM taillights for a Legacy BD at less than $250!!

    I got the strip search treatment on the way out to Portland, Oregon, and on the return trip, back in August. They said it was actually coded into my boarding card. Something about building a 'profile' based on travel days, length of stay, timing of purchase, etc. But we business travelers do the unusual!

    Ken, enjoy the trip. One of my 'kids' is coming from Nagoya to us for Christmas break, and my Osaka 'daughter' is considering a Spring Break visit.

    I leave on my 3500 mile trip over the holiday this Saturday. Driving from Southern Nj to New Orleans for thanksgiving . Then driving to my parents home in St Pete Fla for week then back home . It will be my 1st long trip in the Blue bomber(02 outback ).
    Changed my oil today and the dealer forgot to put the screw plugs back on when they did my last oil change .
    I called my service rep and he said na you don't need them anyway. I said yes I do the cover is already starting to bend from the wind hitting it at highway speeds.
    He said they have to be ordered because they don't carry them. So I said then you better get some by Saturday because I don't want to drive 3500 miles and have that cover fly off when I'm doing 70 - 75 mph on the highway.
    He called back and said he'll try to have then in by Fri if not he'll take then off one of the new cars on the lot .
    If he does that I will get a new cover because he said that the screws are different on the 03's.
    Sorry for long post .

    Not so long in the past, I had a friend IM me on a Tuesday night and talk me into a 4 day "road trip" for that weekend. I was in Dallas, she was in Houston. She arrived at my place about midnight on Wednesday night and we took off from Dallas for South Bend, IN. Stopped a few times along the way to sight-see, but drove straight through. Got in about 10 pm on Thursday night to South Bend, slept most of Friday .. lol .. then did a little "sightseeing" in South Bend, left about 5:30 pm from South Bend and drove straight through back to Dallas arriving about 3:30 on Sunday afternoon after which she drove another 4 hours to get home .... it was a nice trip ... lol
    We still talk about doing something like that again sometime ... only now *I* live in South Bend and she is still in Houston !!

    Best part of the whole trip .. we left from South Bend and just outside of town decided to take a different route home than the way we'd come. We were in her red Mustang (which btw does NOT have comfortable seats and not enough leg room for me - who drove 95% of the trip!) sitting on the side of the road trying to figure it out when a state police car pulled up behind us on the shoulder ... good looking little police boy strolls up to the Mustang asking if everything is OK ... he finds 2 40-ish women with a laptop plugged into the cigarette lighter feeding options into the Rand McNally map program to figure out how we can see the most stuff and still get home in time to go to work on Monday ... he walked back to his patrol car literally shaking his head ....

    but won't let me register or post. Just browse. I register and login in, but then when I try to post it says Iam not and I don't have permission. the www.nasioc.com is still nogo.

    It's due to the DNS changeover. It takes some ISPs longer to update their data tables than others. The other thing you might have to do is clear your cookies, quit your browser, and reboot.

    I've had a ton of questions like that and 99% of the time it cleared it up.

    Did you try logging in again, when asked, to post a reply?
    I had the same problem, until I attempted to post and Logon when asked to to post.

    We're road trippin' for Turkey Day, probably Tuesday afternoon. I never learn, remember how last year Mike Smith made it to Boston in less time than I took to get to CT? He left at 4am, something like that. The wife said no way!

    juice, Yes, we left DC at 4am, hit NYC around 7:30, and lobster roll in Boston at 11am. If you leave earlier, you hit traffic that left Wed night; later, you hit traffic that left Thu morning. My dentist has been going to NYC on Thanksgiving for about 20 years and that's the best departure time she's found.

    Not many vehicles on the road, breeze through (most) tolls, and the kids sleep (until daylight, anyway). It is an early rise, though. This year we're staying in DC.

    I haven't figured out the best time to return, however. Leaving Monday at 8am and you hit rush hour multiple times in Connecticut.

    to the Catskills. My in-laws are coming south from NH, and that seemed to be about half way. We're staying at a resort this year.

    We used to meet in Long Island while my father/mother in-law were living. Since they passed away, we've swapped homes with my sister in-law and her family, for Thanksgiving. It's just getting to difficult to do that now, especially with what's going on in the world these days...

    My daughter is flying in from college. We're meeting her at BWI, and are leaving directly from there to go to NY. We're going to drive through PA, and avoid the NJ Turnpike.

    We're leaving around noon Tuesday. So I'm sure we'll catch rush hour somewhere in NY. We'll just stop for dinner, with two kids I'm sure it will not be a quick trip.

    Fitzgerald is changing the wife's oil tomorrow, for free. :-)

    I've tried all that already. No luck. I get the homepage using the nasioc address, but "attempt failed" if I try to get to the forums. I can get to the forums through the IP, but I can't post. I register, it says "Welcome back, lucien2!" I submit a post...then it says I am an unregistered user, I re-register again, and then it says I am trying to post to a non-existent thread and throws me out. I've re-done all cookies 2X now. *sigh*

    On the outside looking in. At everyone else merrily posting away.

    We are headed south, leaving on Monday afternoon when Em gets out of school. Hudson River Valley of NY (Hopewell Junction) to my parents in Cranbury, NY (exit 8A) for overnight visit, then on to Fredricksburg, VA. Returning during the weekend following. So to Bob & Juice - wave while we pass each other!!!

    We'll be heading to MD driving through PA to avoid I95. I have an uncle that lives near Hagerstown (in Knoxville, just outside WV).

    Bob - If you happen to pass through Andes, check out the Andes Hotel (hotel/restaurant/tavern). My friend just married the brother of the chef there and the food is excellent! It's a tiny town that has some FUN roads. There was actually a rally there a couple of months ago.

    G'day

    The Holden Monaro coupe is to be sold in the US as a GM something or other - I think a Pontiac. The Monaro is built off a Holden Commodore platform. The really interesting thing out of the Sydney Motor Show is the related Holden SSX concept shown below. AWD 5.7l and four door hatchback body looks fabulous. Not sure it will make it to production, but it would be nice to dream!


    Make sure you have a look at the images in the top right of the link, particularly the tailgate detail. Possibly a better idea than the Subaru Baja.
