    Happy Bday Serge and Mike!

As for road rage, they just had an article on the news the other night about it. It seems the cops are telling you to call in and report any incidents on the highway. So next time, take down the plate # and call 911.

Steve - hope your dad feels better. In this weather it's harder on the elderly.

I remembered that Paisan was in February, but there seem to be a few more showing up. I'm 35 years old today! Other notable people celebrating today include Ronald Reagan, Tom Brokaw, Bob Marley and a few more that my 35 year old brain can't recall.

a lot like his son! I just talked to my mom & dad. They put him on oxygen as he is having trouble breathing from the pain, and they are afraid of it developing into pheumonia. And of course, he is fighting them and wants to go home! I may have to go down there just to tighten the restraints on the bed.... ;-)

Just catching up after a few days of the computer being down. Clicked on a link Monday and the computer freeked out and opened an infinite number of browser windows until the system froze. All week the computer spontaneously turned into on mad advertizing machine with pop up ads coming a mile a minute. Some for travel, some for food, others for diet, and then there the ones that caused the wife to ask about the websites I frequent!!! (Funny, not-a-one from SOA!)

Anyhow, happy belated Bob; congratulations to your son (and to you!) Patti. As I'm sure all us "married-folk" would agree, long after the wedding is over, we remember the fun we had, and not the hoopla (or the bills!) In our case, even our best pictures are the "snap-shots" taken by some of our guests. The "professional" pictures are in a box somewhere - the photographer stunk!

Greg, any suggestions on the XP upgrade? I've decided to take the plunge myself. Did you upgrade office too? Still on the fence on that one....

    Pete.
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
Big difference, regardless of what O/S you have, unless you're into the NT environment. Office upgrade is worth it as well. Much quicker and flexible in terms of new options and features.
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
Elmer is right. Xp is much nicer than the 98 I was running before. I purchased more memory and a CD-RW and installed them before upgrading. Then backed up all files. Don't forget browser bookmarks (the Crew of course). Also, get updated drivers for your video card, cd, printer, and modems before upgrading. I then installed Xp as a new system (not as upgraded) as this wiped out my drive and started over. One glitch was the worms I picked up (during upgrade) that would shut down system. Don't know how, but, could have been when during install I requested automatically check Microsoft website for Xp upgrades. Once I cleaned that up it was great. Created one account for my wife and I and one account for my daughters. I also upgraded to Office Professional (only paid $20 through work).

is SO worth the upgrade. I recently upgraded from ME and I'm kicking myself for not having done it sooner. It performs better and is just a much more pleasant interface.

I highly suggest going with a clean install. I tried the "upgrade" path first, but some drivers didn't install correctly and had some problems.

    happy birthdays jim and serge

XP ... I upgraded from ME and it was a huge difference for the better ... I ran the utilities that came with it to check the system for possible "problems" and uninstalled a few things that looked like would be a problem ... then installed ... it brought in my stuff from ME with no problems ... did the upgrade for Office at the same time ...

I am "lucky" in that I am a student at the local college and can purchase some of the programs there on a "site license" deal with the University ... all I can say is it's a GREAT DEAL so if you have that option look into it !!!
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
the "site license" from my job allowed me to buy the Office for the cheap price. I also installed virus protection per my job.

still getting use to the subtle differences with XP over 2000 though. Worth the upgrade, just keep up with critical updates.

february is a busy month I guess for birthdays. happy birthday to you (cha cha cha)

to all those with February birthdays!

As a almost Old F**t, I'm finding that I tend to shuffle more when there is slippery surfaces to walk on. But shuffling doesn't work too well when skiing.

Subaru of Canada are advertising 2004 Legacy and Outback with no charge extras, $1750CDN in the Legacy and $2565CDN in the Outback base model.

The base Outback is now the same as the limited Sans moonroof and leather, body coloured Mirrors Handles Mouldings, 6Cdwith Weatherband radioand a host of other things.

In the local wheels section of the local paper today what looks to be a promising idea, it is a little shaker motor that goes on the wiper arms, much like the vibrator motor on a cell phone.

The idea you use it to shake the wiper arms free of ice and snow buildup in winter, we all know that frustration and if this works well it is a great idea.

    Happy b-day to everyone!

Steve: Wishing your Dad a speedy recovery.

I had to drive from my home in New Jersey, to Nassau County, Long Island this morning. The weather was brutal, but the Outback handled it like a real champ! The AWD makes such a huge difference in inclement weather of any kind. I can't imagine ever having another car without it. Plus, it must have really been put to good use cause that customary burning "Eau d'Subaru" smell was quite prevalent.

Here is a question for all the computer experts, I have a problem with internet explorer and it is driving me nuts, when I open IE it opens up fine, but when I enter a site any site as soon as the site opens I get a message saying IE has encountered a problem and will Have to close.

It then suggests reporting the problem, I have and I have tried the fixes that they suggest, anybody else had this problem and if so how did you fix it?

Once I reopen IE it is fine until the next time I use the computer.

      Cheers Pat.

my ex's brother's children bought him gifts for xmas one year ... house slippers (scuffs) that had "old fart" embroidered on them .. and as he walked one of them had the "whoopie cushion" sound in the sole ....

I had a similar problem, turns out it was all the damned spyware all over my hard drive.
  • toboggantoboggan Member Posts: 283
It also could be that your IE is in need of updating from Microsoft. Just start your "Windows Update". There probably will be a "ton" of changes for IE.

    Good Luck!

Thanks re all the advice. I am getting excited to do the upgrade. Probably will get to it next weekend. Already have 256MB RAM on a P3 (everyone wants me to get a new system, but I don't think I need it for what I do on it.) Do you all think that's enough or should I upgrade to 512? ($140 at Staples). How do I save Explorer favorites - I just thought I'd have to type them all back in! Definitely planning on doing a clean install. Started getting all the drivers ready too. I've been told XP is great and automatically having the drivers??? ie for the 3Com NIC card and most OE video etc. Anyone know if that's inaccurate?? Also, planning to buy a new virus protection. Any votes Norton vs. McAfee?

Hope everyone has a good weekend.
    Pete.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I'm running it on 128MB and I have ALWAYS liked Norton better ... but then I haven't tried McAfee in a few years ...
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Road Runner is offering FREE mcafee security and anti-virus software. I too like Norton for Anti-virus, came installed on both our 'puters.

Pat - I would try running that Ad-Aware scanner http://www.lavasoftusa.com and even Spy-Bot Search & Destroy.

There's no subtitute for MB!! I have 512MB in my laptop and it's barely enough for demanding use. have 2GB in my desktop at work, and it's awesome. Keep in mind that I'm running UNIX, which is more memory efficient than XP (which in turn has higher demands than earlier revs of Windows). So my general instinct is to recommend that memory upgrade. It will definitely help your computer run smoother (and faster too).

i might have more memory in my computer than i thought ... the b/f may have installed some more ... (i can't remember!)
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
I have a 500MHz PIII, 320MB Ram and 20G hard drive. The XP is running great with this setup. However, we are not very demanding. My girls play Sims with it and it works fine. For Favorites, go to "file" and then "import and export", then "export favorites", choose the favorites you want and where you want to save them. Reverse this to import. Unfortunately, I can't get the thing to import now. Keeps saying the favorites.HTML file is invalid. Also, I too like Norton better, but just installed McAfee since it was free through work.

Fun road trip. Saw the show (w/VIP passes of course - thanks Patti), with the whole family, and met Bob, DaveM, hypov, paisan, and Patti there, it was great. Plus Eric from SoA. Details in the Events thread.

We got a hotel for 2 nights, so we hit the pool, then checked out the Liberty Bell. Still cracked... :o)

Lana was not that impressed with the Sienna, so the pressure is off. She hated the Quest, too. That means I can stall, stay on The Fence for a while longer...

I checked out the SRX and Ford Freestyle closely to speculate on how the Subaru 7 seater might be packaged. Ford did it right; the Caddy has no room in the 3rd row. Funny thing is the Ford is smaller.

So I'll go back to doing my "Macumba" (Brazilian black magic) to get the price of the 7 seater down below $30 grand.

there is a tool called the Files & Setttings Transfer Wizard that should show up on the screen that runs when the disc autoruns. It's under the Accessories -> System menu in XP if you're already in XP. That tool will import favorites, email, my documents, etc.

We added Ad Aware today so we will see how it goes, Loosh suggested it well.

     Thanks to both of you.

       Cheers Pat.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
To Loosh and Brian, since adding Ad aware the problem has not reoccurred.

      Cheers Pat.
  • toboggantoboggan Member Posts: 283
the better! Memory is still cheap. Go for 512MB as a minimum for XP. If you're running Linux/Unix you can get by with less.
