Frank - There are detectors that read laser, but even if they do it's usually too late. Radar has a very wide beam and it's easy to pick up. Laser's beam is only about a foot or so wide and doesn't spread out, making it harder to pick up stray signals.
My detector read Laser on I78 in NJ Saturday night.

You say your ticket already lists a date? That's interesting. Read the instructions on the ticket carefully, maybe ask a neighbor (or friend from your state) with a little experience.
If the cop does not show up at all, you won the lottery, plead not guilty. You're off because there is no evidence against you.
If the cop does show up, plea guilty with explanation. Obviously your Subaru is ultra-smooth and you didn't realize how fast you were going, but of course you're sorry and promise to be more attentive from now on.
I've never once seen a judge *not* reduce the fines/points, or even both.
Last but not least, slow down a little, there are inexperienced 16 year old kids on the roads that you might pass at that speed and it might startle them.

The instructions on the back of the ticket are for either pleading guilty by mail, or entering a not guilty plea. The front of the ticket gives a date and time for a court appearance.
I usually stay at 5 - 10 mph at the most over the limit, unless I'm following the flow of traffic. This time around I just got caught up in driving as the only vehicle on the road, late at night. I also do not weave in and out of traffic. Even when I drove a cab, I didn't go too nuts!

Around here, they're using the cameras to catch speeders. They don't assign points, just a parking ticket-like fine, mailed to the car owners (not necessarily the driver). But they're basically on my commute to work almost every day.

Next, if your ticket is returnable in a town or village court, you have a chance of knocking down the points by plea bargain. If your ticket is returnable before a DMV administrative judge (as is the case in NYC), forget about a plea bargain -- you can't. You can, however, hope that the officer doesn't show and have the ticket dismissed on that basis. Good Luck!

Also about your wife.... I'm sure things will be fine. Will keep her in prayer...
Hope you get that ticket resolved but I agree with juice, it's best to go to court unless you can write a nice letter explaining your situation and that loosing a day of work can result in loosing a consulting contract (you're a consultant remember?) :-)
On that note, I just remembered that some jerk cop decided to give me a ticket because I went 5 MPH over limit which I know FOR A FACT it's not true; wife is witness. But because I had NJ plates and I was in VA then he took advantage, I'm sure! Anyway, where do I find out about these defensive courses that's supposed to help reduce your points. I got 2 points though the fine was reduced after I sent a nice letter to the judge. Officer even lied telling me no points were going to be on the license... ba**ard!

I tried to get an okay to share information today, but I was asked to wait until we have some answers to some questions. Sorry.

On the ticket, I'll bet it was in the town of Florida. Notorious for speeding tickets on the NYS Thruway. Anyways up there the best thing to do is get a local lawyer and send him to the court date. You'll pay about $300 but they'll plea it down to about $150 and no points. Let me know what town it was in and I can get you the lawyer's name/number.

anyone else having trouble seeing the cracker site? ;-)

Praying for your wifey and you
and your ticket, look on the bright side, at least you didn't cut off the Trooper ;-)

My lips are sealed until then.

As for the ticket advice, thank you for that also. I have to say, it is a sobering affect on my driving style. Coming home, I kept slowing it down, keeping a critical eye on the speedometer to make sure I don't have a repeat performance.
Elm - I'm not a consultant, so I don't want to make anything up like that for the court. My boss has given me the day off already. The downside is it is a 4 - 5 hour trip up for a 3 pm court appearance, then return trip, then work the next morning. That's another reason not to speed in excess! (Or at least get caught doing so.)
Thanks again- The Crew is/are great!

Cheers Pat.

One time I went I coincidentally bumped into a friend of mine from HS, he had gotten a ticket for putting up a flag and supposedly blocking the rear view.
Well, I helped him come up with a strategy for his defense. The flag was very small, and being from Argentina, they were light colors (white/blue), so it was nearly transparent. You really could see through it.
The judge called his name and he pled "Not guilty with explanation", the whole court room bust out laughing. The judge said, "Son, if you're pleading not guilty, of course you're going to have an explanation". But it lightened up the mood.
He finally explained the size and translucency of the flag, mentioned the 1st Amendment, yadda yadda, and the judge dismissed the case.
OTOH, I've seen motorcycle drivers that were going 100mph and tried to flee from a cop, that guy got busted hard, max penalty.
Sending positive karma your wife's way, Mark.

Wishing the best turnaround when you're up there ;-)
Mailed you the lawyer for the town next to where you got nailed. He'll hook you up and no vaca day necessary.
As for a flag, at least in NYS, you can obstruct all but the driver and passenger windows if you have side view mirrors.
I got that ticket for my american flags on the NJTP once, but paid the ticket, since the cop had pulled me over for doing 85 in a 65 and wrote me for the flags instead of the speed.

As far as the ticket - now it has been 10 years since my last one (knock on wood), but this is how the rules worked then:
The court date on the ticket was when you would appear to enter a plea. The officer is not usually in attendence at that date, but if he usually works that stretch of highway, you might find him there by chance. If you plead guilty, then the fine is set and you pay the clerk. The judge might accept your request for leniency at that time (based on your otherwise good citizenship). If your plea is not guilty, then a future court date is set, and the officer notified.
You can also send it in by mail. If guilty, you can expect to get pretty much whatever the lookup chart says the penalty is. If you plead not guilt, a future date is set, and the officer notified.
Hope this helps, and is still current procedure...

93,100 on my Forester... and still no MY 2005 in sight...
• New Red (Regatta Red)
• New 3-spoke steering wheel
• New cruise control stalk, a la STi & '05Legacy/Outback
•"AWD" badge removed from rear deck and "C" pillars, and replaced by small "Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive" in rear quarter glass, again like new '05 Legacys and Outbacks.

Add the couple of improvements Bob just mentioned and The Fence might have lost a few members!

I'll try to do better - especially for you Kate! What would we do if another company lured you away after all your patience? Now Juice - I'm feeling the urge to push you off that fence, you know! I think I know just the trick - stay tuned!

* 2006 7 Seater
* 2005 Forester XT PP 5MT
* 2005 Legacy GT 5MT
* 2005 Outback XT or LL Bean auto
* 2004 Outback LL Bean (bargain left over)
* 2004 base Outback (serious bargain right now)
Fitz had that last one at $19.7k, with automatic! Heated seats and all, they're giving them away! I'm tempted.
Hmm, Patti, now you're teasing me...
Pat may be onto something, the wife is talking about beach properties again. If we do that we'll have to wait a couple of years. That would make the 7 seater a front-runner due to the timing.

PS Berlin Wall, LOL. Funny but true.
But isn't the snow why we got Subies to begin with? We were hit with 16 inches over the past day, and my OBS is just LOVING it! New snow tires on an AWD car are keeping me going in comfort and security. Damn, I love this car!

Why, you ask?
Well, you don't want slush sticking to them because it'll throw your wheels off balance.
Also clear any slush from the wheel well so you can turn properly. Some folks use silicone spray to keep slush from sticking.

It's not even that, it's interest rates. It's like there's free money out there for whoever qualifies to borrow it.
I did some math, and for an average car payment of about $400/month, plus a down payment, we could get 1 bedroom condo. 2BR for not much more. Really the rent covers expenses and bring the net monthly to about a car payment.
We're going to check out a couple of places next week. Of course they might be dumps, who knows.
So add that to The Fence options.
