    Ty,

That's EXACTLY the reason why I went with the Nikon D70. My Canon S30 could not keep up with my then 1-year old daughter and I simply got tired of missed and out of focus shots.

It's so nice to be able capture those brief moments and get them stored away in digital format.

    Ty

I actually liked the 20D better than the D70 I have (although the color accuracy of the D70 is better, IMHO). It's just I already had a bunch of Nikon stuff and didn't want to switch.

Konica-Minolta now has a DSLR with an optical stabilizer built into the body! A VR zoom lens for my Nikon is about $1700! I hope Nikon and Canon follow suit. It would save me a lot of money!

Wow, I returned after a hiatus to find that you guys are having a rough time. Many blessings for a speedy recovery.

Steve - give Brenda my best.

For the holidays we bought the Olympus Stylus 410 point and shoot. 4MP, 3x optical, weather proof. Takes nice pics, though indoor lighting needs to be bright for a nice picture.

Tell Beth to stay tough, Steve. I'm sure she'll bounce back from this.

My camera takes "blueish" photos, I have some adjusting to do.

  • Agreed. The D70 is a phenomenal camera, too, and I even thought about going with it when I became frustrated with the Digital Rebel (shutter self destructed just as my sister-in-law was getting married...AHHHHH!!!). And then the 20D came out. Talk about the camera of my dreams. I have all Canon stuff from my film days, so switching to Nikon would have been quite costly.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
this camera stuff is Cafe material IMO... but I can't resist hehe

although the color accuracy of the D70 is better, IMHO

there are two modes for selecting color reproduction on the 20D, I can't remember what they are but one of them is the default exaggerated canon colors that has made canon quite successful in the consumer market. you can switch to a truer color saturation scheme, though.

    here's a big pic from a 20D:

    Tom,

Today was a day with a lot of doubts and indecision. After a series of calls to oncologists, our insurance company trying to get some history on the surgeon and our options, we put the temporary brakes on and made an appt with a Dr. down at Sloan-Kettering for a thorough review and second opinion. There is just too much at stake to rush in.

    Steve

It's good that you feel comfortable with such a big decision. Second opinions are always welcome, as long as it doesn't take too long to get. Ask alot of questions (in a nice way) and make sure you are comfortable with the answers. Make an educated decision with the help of her doctors. It's the 21st century, you don't have to blindly listen to doctors anymore. ;-)

Good luck, Steve. Keep us updated!

from nabisco (Nawar & Mike Wevrick) today at the Baltimore car show. Also met up witth Mike (declansdad) again, who was very generous in that he gave me 4 almost new 205/70x15 Dunlop Graspic snow tires mounted on rims (from TireRack), with an extra set of lug nuts too!

Why? Mike is now he proud papa of a 2-day-old 5-speed gold Forester XT PP; and the old tire/wheel combo wouldn't fit over the brakes of the new '05 XT.

Thanks a bunch Mike, and enjoy your new ride!

Ok, I think I need some help. I took my car to a car wash. But after getting home, I was so unhappy with the wash that I washed the car again (by hand, of course). Now I'm sure the car wash got a lot of the dirt off so washing it my hand was easier. So I'm not totally crazy, right? Or do I need to seek help?

Do other people have this same problem? ;-)

Of course it rained the next day. :-(. Never fails.

    tom

Wow Bob. It's good to have generous friends!

Do you have any tricks like that to make it snow?

I never put my studded tires on this winter but even that old stand-by didn't work.

Spent a couple days at a conference in Dulles, VA. Changed flights to beat out the predicted noreaster on Thursday. Left NH at 6:00am in the rain. With the extra time, I got to go to into DC for the day. The Smithsonian is awesome!

Best wishes on everyone's ailments. I believe I have a double ear infection, which started Wednesday night, of course.

Tom - car wash and hand wash? You are now an official member of the OCD club - probably qualify as vice president. Rob M.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You only washed it twice? ;-)

Rob: next time try to schedule some spare time, maybe we can meet up somewhere.

Best thing about DC? Everything is free! All the museums, monuments, etc.

You're quite welcome and thanks for the compliment about my new 05 FXT.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for some snow in the next couple of weeks so you can try out the new "snow shoes."

Nice to meet some of the other members yesterday!

was it one of those automatic touchless ones?

I have the same problem too and usually wash mine twice. The wheel wells especially don't get clean.

Any of you guys having trouble with Imagestation? I get logged in but I cannot get into any of my albums all I can get are thumbnails. Imagestation does not seem able to fix the problem.

     Cheers Pat.

No issues with them here Pat. I can get into all of my albums and start slideshows or toggle through the albums. My profile link (helicopter landing pad image) seems to work too.

Yeah, I think I could spend 2 weeks at the smithsonian! ;-)

Oooh, not common for adults to get ear infections Rob. Has it happened before?

LOL Rob. I don't think I'd make it as VP of the OCD club. As Juice said, I didn't was the inside of my wheels. (But I did go as far as wash some of the inside. ;-) )

    tom, in OCD denial
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Yeah Eric. It was one of those automated ones. It only washed about 1/3 of my rims. They look worse partially clean than dirty.

Steve, I wish I could make it snow! It's pouring rain now. I'm headed for Whistler in a week. I think I'll be playing cards indoors in the rain! Oh well, at least I won't be working!

Tom, I don't ever remember having an ear infection. I believe it is self induced where I took up swimming back in September.

Whistler, huh? I am sooooo jealous. That is somewhere I have always wanted to go. I did Colorado, Utah and Tahoe in my single days, besides my unlimited access to NH/ME/VT. However, I am heading up to the NH lakes region for some skiing on Friday. I have access to a ski chalet (FREE) 5 minutes from Gunstock. Small, but some good runs. Rob M.

It's been a pretty lousy ski season for the Mid-A. We had a couple weeks of true winter in late January, but it's been very mild otherwise. I am starting to realize that I need to live with the spring conditions or not ski at all. I'd be surprised if we got another serious dose of winter at this point (despite what the groundhog indicated!).

Hopefully, I will head up to Vermont at the end of the month for a week or so of skiing.

    Craig
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Ahh, yeah Rob, if you swim a lot you can get swimmers ear, (Otitis externa). Some antibiotic drops ought to take care of it though.

Whistler is very nice. 2 mountains to choose from. You can take 2 Gondolas to the top of Blackcomb and ski beginner runs all the way down! (nice for the kids) There are of course a lot of other more challenging runs. Sorry Rob, but there's nothing in the NE that I saw when I lived out there that even remotely compares. ;-)

Unfortunately, there's not much snow. :-(. So you'll probably get in more skiing than I will! Free chalet sounds really good too! ;-)

Craig, how's skiing in the mid-Atlantic region? Is it small hills like the NE? ;-) No big mountains back east!

Whistler was reportedly icy last week, but a mountain like that can change quickly. Bogus got ~2 inches overnight and it piled up to ~6" in lots of spots. It was a bomber day, and I even got my wife to ski off the groom some.

The zipper on my backup snowsuit blew out so blue jeans may be the costume for the rest of the year. Then I whacked the OB's liftgate bottom edge with my board and added a nice chip to the collection. Sure is fun!

  • My favorite local resort in Utah, Alta, has a 132" base with 402" of cold, powdery snow for the year. It's been an amazing year for skiers...except me. I've been watching all this snowfall from my living room while I heal 4 herniated disks. Got rear ended in September and had to drop all my sports. Sigh...
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
You could ship some of that snow out here! Must be torture though.

Hope you're doing physical therapy and not just laying in bed. Also, if you've herniated 4 disks I'm not sure how much of a career skiing you have left. It's probably not a good idea. Sorry. There's always snowshoeing!

    tom
  • Too funny you would mention that, Tom. I'll be heading to a winter festival in Bryce Canyon for the weekend to snowshoe. I was originally going to cross country ski, but the arm motion and strain will put too much pressure on my thorasic area, which is where the herniated disks are.

Yep. Physical therapy for four months now. They've pretty much exhausted the treatment options, though. Next up is possible surgery to remove the herniated material. Very scary. The orthopod recommend chiropractic treatment for a month or so to see if it helps. I'll be heading to that appointment in 20 minutes.

  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
    That is funny! LOL!

Wow, you herniated 4 Thoracic disks? Not very common. The natural course of herniated disks is that they gradually 'reabsorb' over time. But if you're not better at 6 months it is less likely. There is a procedure called 'Percutaneous Disk Decompression' which uses needles instead of surgery. Much less invasive, but it might be really hard to find someone near you willing to do it, especially on 4 thoracic disks (I've never done nor seen it on so many disks). But maybe if they did the worst two it you might do well. Anyway, something to think about (while snowshoeing!)

Oohh, Alta. I was hoping to make it out there this year but it probably won't happen. Then again, if I get desperate enough....

Tom, mid-A skiing is not that good, but not so bad either. Some of the summits are higher than what I used to ski in Vermont, but the overall vertical drop is usually much less and the trails are shorter. Snowshoe WV gets pretty good snow (even lake effects snow) but this year has seen very mild temperatures.

I do like Utah and Tahoe ski areas, but Mad River Glen and Sugarbush VT are still my favorites! Love the terrain there.

    Craig
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Craig: around here, you're always skiing on ice or slush, it seems.

I went skiing in Taos, NM once, and they had a 5 mile trail. Elevation was so high, I kept running out of breath, even when I was resting!

To relate this to Subies, that's what turbos are for - to compensate for thin air.

    -juice
  • Juice: Hmmmmm, I wonder if we could 'turbo' our lungs, then? Alta hits 11,000 feet at the top and around 8,000 feet at the base. You can really feel the difference in a small displacement four cylinder when traveling from Salt Lake City (4,000 feet)

Tom: My orthopod mentioned injection therapy as an option, starting with cortizone and then moving to what he termed 'battery acid' (neuro toxin and sugar water). I'll see if he was referring to 'Percutaneous Disk Decompression.' Thanks for the help; I really do appreciate it.

I think Taos was at 6000 ft, something like that. I have asthma so I can't imagine I could ever catch my breath at Alta!

Well, our life slowly goes back to normal. My husband is back after spending a couple of weeks with his mom and cousins.

Best of luck and speedy recovery to Bob, Brenda and Beth.

Forester has 118,500K miles on it now, soon to be taken to 120K service. The plan is now to hand it over to my daughter when she turns 18 (next year).

I really like the new Forester's facelift and am really anxious to get a new one, but I can wait another year, no problem. I hope face-lifted Foresters in the US market will get 5-spoke wheels, like shown on Subaru site in Japan. I always felt 5-spoke wheels matched the character of that car the best.

    Just saw this: http://www.activetestdrive.com/

They rated the OB #3 on their list for best value vehicle. This site is trying to get sports active people hooked up with the "active lifestyle" car. Not that I am that active (lol) but active.com does all the registration for Bike NY, and other similar events. They made up their list in conjunction with the National Sports Network.
