    Elmer,

Wow, sounds like you have paid quite a big price for a minor indiscretion. Very sorry to hear how much this has set you back, and hope for a speedy recovery.

    juice, 5/29 AM, 7 lbs 5 oz
    Dan, 5/27, 7#2
Bob, 5/29 (you get PM), TEN pounds! :D
    Brenda, 5/30, 6#4
    Ian, 5/29 4AM, 7#8
    Jeff, 5/27 early AM, 6#10
    Serge, 5/28 PM, 6#14
Paul, 5/31, darn near midnight, 6#
Papa Bear, 5/30, wee early am (maybe 5:30am) 7#7
    Jim, mid 6# range
    Steve, 6/6, 6# (666?)

Actually if we're allowed to revise our guesses, I'll pull a strategy from the price is right and guess ZERO pounds zero ounces, so if everyone is over I win. :P

Elm - sorry to hear about your injury. I should be more careful myself, got two scarred knuckles from that tune-up, one from a cut that could have been a lot worse (screw driver slipped).

Ken, can I ask a few questions before I guess?

What's the due date of the baby?
Is your wife on Bed Rest? (Because she's dilating?)
Was your first daughter on time?

My guesss is June 1, weight, 5 lbs 8 oz (For your wife's sake!) Length- 19"

My guess is subject to change depending on the answers to my questions though! ;)

    Ken,
I thought that might be the case! OK, I'll revise my weight guesstimate as well. I'll go with 5 lbs. 15 oz.

bigelm - OUCH! Get well soon!

Steve - Are you sure you want to guess 6/6/06 and 6 lbs.? Don't you want to add the 6 oz. too? ;)

    Cheers!

    When I did it, I didn't realize that I had gone with 666 :D
Sounds like Kanako is a tiny lady, so I'll spare her the extra burden of the 6 oz.!!!

    Steve

Oh, speaking of a Kanako, our first foreign exchange student & daughter, Kanako T., wrote to me yesterday to ask if we could come to Nagoya, Japan for her wedding in November! She was 15 years old in 1990 when she came to live with us for a year and attend 10th grade. She has been back to visit us twice since, and I stayed for several days with her family when I was on business in Japan almost 4 years ago. K-kid, as we affectionately called her, is now an assistant patent attorney for Toyota. So now our planning begins....

    tom:

    Good questions:

    - Due date is June 14th
    - No bed rest
    - Our first daughter was two weeks early

  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
    Steve,

That's great and an honor to be invited to a wedding! I wonder if it will be western style or traditional Japanese. Either way, you'll see some distinctly Japanese customs. No Chicken dance, that's for sure!

Let me know if you need any help in planning. What to see and do, how to get around, etc. Also, I'll let you know the typical customs at a Japanese wedding so you'll just blend right in (and impress the family)!

    Ken,

That would be a great help! We went out for sushi last night to celebrate. Emily is excited about the trip, Annie has no idea what we are talking about, except for saying several times "I go back to visit China?".

Style of clothing is an issue, as Kanako has not told us much yet. Beth was wondering if she could rent a kimono suitable for the occasion, rather than probably be the only adult in western dress. Black suits for the men still appropriate?

No chicken dance? Emily will be very disappointed! Please tell me that we will at least get to do the Hokey Pokey?

Connections in an out of Nagoya Airport are not the best. American and United flew direct from the US for a while, but I cannot find much now. Might have to go to either Narita or Kansai and hop the Shinkansen.

This just came across the ticker tape:

( PN ) 05/26 11:53AM The Next Patrol Vehicle You See May be a Subaru - Memorial Day travelers in Kitsap County will be first to see new traffic safety enforcement vehicle -

Unfortunately, I am not sure how to link the story without copying the whole thing. Basically, for those of you in the Seattle area -watch out!

The Kitsap County Sheriffs Dept is "the Sheriff's Office will put into service a brand new 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Sedan to be used as an unmarked traffic safety enforcement vehicle. The primary role of the vehicle will be to conduct school zone safety
enforcement and to combat aggressive driving."

Its nice to have a system where you can put in key words (Subaru) and have an alert go off to notify you. Plus, my co-workers know me as a Subaru nut

Probably not going to get an oppourtunity to check out the boards here until back at work on Wed. I'm going to attempt to clean and re-stain my deck, weather permitting, along with other "honey do" projects that have been accummulating.

Just want to take the oppourtunity to wish everyone a Happy and Safe Memorial Day Weekend. Also thanks to those who are still, and have served in the Armed Forces wherever they may be.

    Thanks Mark! You too!

Deb and I are heading down to Wimington, NC, to move our daughter back to Maryland. I've rented a cargo van, and we will be leaving Monday, and coming back late Wednesday.

Mairen, our daughter, spent the past year working as an RN in the big hospital in Wilmington, and is now coming back to go to grad school in the fall. Her apartment lease is up this month, hence the early move.

    Steve,

No problem. Email me or call me and I'd be more than happy to give you advice!

As for wedding attire, men typically wear suits and women, dresses. While some people do chose to wear traditional Japanese formal wear (men: haori hakama, women: kimono), it's definetly the minority these days.

As for getting to Nagoya, I'd recommend flying into Kansai and then taking the Shinkansen to Nagoya. Kansai is a much more manageable airport, the Shinkansen is closer and Nagoya is only one hour away.

Last Friday, I was officially hired as a full time teacher for next year at my school. I'll be doing block teaching of Social Studies and Language Arts (English) in 6th grade.I will have a partner doing math and science. For those of you who know how tought the last 4(!) years have been since my Worldcom layoff, be happy with me and raise a beer to my principal, a real mensch. This is my first full time postion as a teacher and not a sub, so it also means benefits..me happy!!!!!

I guess I'm out of the pool since there is no baby news from Ken...either that or he is getting no sleep from the birth at the exact time and weight I predicted!

And naturally, the Devil uses the Gregorian calendar like we do, not the Julian, Hebrew, Chinese, Islamic or any other. One website says there are over 40 calendars in use in the world today.
Now, I imagine there may be some psychological effects from the way the mom may treat that child differently, or any teasing the child may get. But good luck getting the world to stop giving birth for one day.

    Update 5/30 12:22PM PST

No baby yet. Wife went for another exam and no changes! The doctors were all scratching their heads as they were sure she would have been born by now.

Now her doctor is talking about inducing her next Monday if it doesn't happen by then!

Nature throws another curveball! Stay tuned folks!
