Subaru's AC units don't have a problem handling 110+ degrees with one caveat... tinted windows are a must!

Well I'm pretty sure that "Elmer" is Anglo but there's nothing to say that your parents aren't Korean and Jamaican who just happened to like the name :P

I've traveled extensively on business past 2 months or so... too many projects too little time.

Serge, I'm sorry to hear about your son's incident and I really hope it will blow over w/o major consequences.

Like Lucien2, I was raised in a family with a very relaxed attitude to casual sip of wine or beer, so I personally don't see this as a big deal. I think 21 age limit is too harsh.

What else is new? The new owner of my old Forester (one who bought it with 167K mi) keeps telling me how well and smoothly it runs and all other nice things about that car. I do miss my old "Silvius".

Silvius-2 has now 8K miles on it. Hubby's WRX is pushing 90K miles. Soon we need to decide whether to go for WRX 2008 or wait another year so that new model bugs are all cleared out.

Here's how they work - you turn the fan to 3 or 4 and adjust the temp to the blue area, then press the A/C button.

Oh, you mean how well do they work? ;)

No problems in DC's hot and humid summers here. My Forester had tinted windows by my wife's Legacy does not. Hers still works fine. Takes longer (obviously) to cool the kids off in the back seat. She usually opens the windows until the A/C is pumping cold air.

Our car port helps, because you're in the shade before you get started.

Man, with getting ready to move one onto the Penn State campus, and vacations, and trips to Edmunds, and earthquakes, and a HUGE thunderstorm trying to kill every electronic dvice in my house at the moment, I for one am ready for the fall.

    As Charlie Brown might say...

    AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Anybody else gonna vent in the chat this week?? LOL
Just doing a little testing here...

For all-season go with Sumitommo HTR+
Summers Faulken Azenis Sports RT615 or Yokohama ES100s

Don't forget about the rear wheel well rubbing going 225s on the wagon.

The Falken Ziex 512 is safe with 225s

RE050A Pole Position, 225s seem to be ok on my wagon, no rubbing noticed.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Azenis are what the Miata folks use for autocross. Great summer tire. Put winter tires on your current rims, voila! :shades:

Thought I'd drop in to say hello to the crew. Paisan just posted up a nice picture of his new white GT Wagon over at LGT.com and that reminded me that I hadn't visited here in WAY TOO LONG!

So, before I read back a few pages and catch up on what everyone is up to (no good I'm sure :P :surprise: ;) ). I thought I'd say hello and I hope everyone and their families are well.

    Cheers!

    Good to hear from you.

I just got back from a one week vacation, and the kids just started school today. So we're back to the routine already. Summer sure went by fast!

Yesterday my oem Brigestone Portenza right front tire(Outback 2004)Delaminated on florida Turnpike. Yes, my psi was 34 ( 4 lbs. more than designated by man.)and I rotate regularily. Tires had 18,000 miles and Lincolns head is 1/3 covered by tread on his head.
I'm surprised by the number of folks that like this tire. I never did, but waited too long to change out or upgrade. I welcome all feedback Looking at Dunlop SP sport 5000---highly rated by consumer reports.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
That's wild, I hope everyone was OK.

While the Potenzas aren't admired much, I can't say I've ever heard of another Subie delaminating a tire like that. That's insane. :surprise:
  • goneskiiangoneskiian Member Posts: 381
    Thanks Juice!

Yeah, summer's pretty much over here too. Leaves starting to fall and you can feel the chill returning. Tomorrow's supposed to be nearly 80 though so we're still getting some summer(y) weather. Kids back to school already? Yeah, I guess it's that time of year. Boy does that bring back some memories!:lol:;)

Yikes on the tire delam! That's scary. I hope everyone is OK. The Potenza's (or blowtenza's as their often referred to) are not very well liked but I've never heard of any failing like this. I highly doubt it was due to you having the pressure slightly higher than recommended. I frequently have mine higher than recommended for the better gas mileage and firmer ride.

    Cheers!

I currently have Bridgestone Turanza LS-Vs on the car, but Florida roads are tough on tires...most are crushed coral...so far, I have approx 30,000 miles on them
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
I don't know anyone who likes that OEM tire actually...on other Subaru boards it is the one thing everyone CAN agree on.....hating! But that has much to do with its underwhelming performance, even by All Season standards. I've never heard a report of a failure like that.

I ran SP5000s on 2 Legacys and loved them. I am currently running the Comp T/A as a replacement but I believe I'll be going back to the Dunlops when they're cooked. They're fine, I just liked the feel of the Dunnies better.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
SP5000s are Awsome tires. Better though I'd say go for Sumitommo HTR+ they are better in the rain/snow than the SP5000s.

    ...ok, maybe it wasn't unthinkable.

Traded in the F-XT in for a fully loaded '07 S40 T5 FWD in electric silver. The lease incentives are crazy if you take the financing to an outside bank. In the end, a $35k MSRP sedan turned into a $26k sale.

The Forester was traded in with only 24k miles.

  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Congrats... nice price on one of the nicest-looking (IMHO) sedans on the market. :) (Err, I mean, boo hiss too, right?) lol

If I weren't dedicated to Subie AWD/durability/reliability, that's one I'd take a close look at. Post up a pic when you get one.

How'd you do on the Forester trade?
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
    I know, boo-hiss, it's deserved. :P

The Forester was leased and was actually on the positive side of the payoff, so I had $1k to sweeten the $26k sale ($25k after trade). Back in '04, my (base MT XT) Forester was $25k even with the IMBA VIP discount of invoice pricing.

I had never considered the S40 but DW's friend had one, so she suggested we take a look. They were also doing sign & drive lease deals, so I actually went looking figuring I'd get a base S60 (again not thinking the S40 was big enough). Surprise surprise, the S40 did. At that price, it was hard to refuse.

I have no regrets on the Forester & Outback that I have had in my garage. And I'm leaving the Crew and MTM threads in my tracked items list :shades:

Good for hanging around ... I for one don't like to 'lose' people!
  • nickelnickel Member Posts: 147
Do you know if there's one available for us, those who have one, for a tradeoff? I kow some brands (like Mazda and Mitsu) made a big deal out of this.
  • nickelnickel Member Posts: 147
Sorry, just went to the SOA webpage and found one only for Impreza owners. Nothing for OB owners.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Congrats on the new ride Brian. Keep us posted on what it's like.

I'm surprised, but for two reasons not mentioned yet:

    * why not a V50 wagon?
    * why no AWD?

The Haldex Volvo uses acts quickly and helps to reduce understeer. I sampled it in the S60 back to back with a FWD model and much preferred the Haldex.

Did you figure you didn't need both cars with AWD? That was our conclusion with the van (we have the Legacy), plus we don't really take road trips when it's snowing.

I found the S40 a bit small, especially rear head room. Then again, you probably don't put adults back there all that often. The V50 offers more rear head room due to the wagon roofline.

Congrats, Papa Bear, and please do stick around.

    Brian,

Even though you are giving up the Forester, you will always be welcome here. Good luck with the S40!

I knew for sometime that I was going to replace my Forester with a sedan, we didn't need 2 wagons in the garage (MPV is large enough for hauling the stuff we take). An AWD S40 in that configuration wasn't easy to find, at least leftover '07's. I was willing to sacrifice AWD for the extras (xenons, leather, upgraded stereo).

So far, the only thing I'm having trouble getting use to is the step-in on the throttle. Nothing a little more driving will take care of.

I'll be opeing the room in about 15 minutes, so grab a beers and some chips and pizza and join us for a little yakkity yak time! :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Getting all that for $26k is nice. That's really only about $2 grand more than a MazdaSpeed3, with a whole lot less content.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Oh Brian, how could you?!?!?!

    Oh well, congrats anyway.

I use to lust over the S60 when they first came out but was underwhelmed by the driving experience.

Looks like my Kodak makes it look more blue than it is in person. It's silver, but the metallic does give it a depth that seems to have some blue in it.

Just found out my wife Deb has breast cancer. She just had a biopsy on Wednesday found out an hour or so so ago. She's meeting with her doctor on Tuesday to see what the treatment will be. Keeping my fingers crossed...

  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
oh Bob, you know I wish you both the best in a bad situation ...

hopefully it will be the 'best of bad news' ...
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
wow, sorry to hear that Bob. I think it's safe to say that the Crew will be keeping your family in their thoughts.

    -Brian
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
We're hoping it was caught early, but won't know anything for sure until Tuesday. I tell you, it's great having my daughter as a nurse, as she's able to sift through all this stuff and have it make sense for the both of us.

A few years ago Deb's sister had breast cancer, and so far she's beaten it. So she's another source of good info, as she's been there, and done that.

A real irony here is that Deb's best girl friend from high school is also going through this, as she just found out last week that she too may have breast cancer.

    Bob
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Good luck Bob. Will keep you guys in our thoughts and prayers. I know she will beat it.

Sorry to hear the news, Bob. We're all fortunate to be living in a time when this can be effectively treated. Keep your thoughts positive through the difficult times ahead. I'll send a prayer your family's way.

Sorry to hear that Bob! be sure to let her know we're all thinking about you both, and keep a positive outlook.
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
My grandmother beat it at a fairly advanced age... lumpectomy and 6 months of treatment, and she was clean until she died many years later (of otherwise natural causes). Caught early, Deb has an excellent chance of kicking it to the curb.

    Pulling for you both!
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
So very sorry to hear this, Bob. Anxious times, indeed. Best to you and Deb and do keep us posted... hoping for the best on Tuesday.
