Sorry Brenda. It sounds like she's in for the long haul but hopefully will recover. Did they not consider plasmapheresis- although it's probably too late now. I'm sorry I'm not totally up to date on treatment for Guillan-Barre as it's not in my field of expertise anymore. I will ask some of our Neurologists and Physiatrists next week for you though.

Wow, I've only seen an LL Bean. I didn't even know there was a pre-production XT model roaming around. Or maybe that was one of the first ones off the assembly line?

If anyone starts seeing 09s in dealers please give me a heads up!

There seem to be 2 treatments for Guillain-Barre - the plasmapheresis and IVIg (Intravenous immunoglobulin). The IVIg was started on Feb 6 before the diagnosis was completely confirmed. They were fairly certain that was the diagnosis, and since it was progressing so rapidly, they thought it important to go ahead and start treatment. She had five of these treatments - one each 24-hour period until Sunday the 10. Since then the neurologist has said that she probably has Miller-Fisher variant of the condition. They can still do plasmapheresis, but neurologist also said that it would be better to wait about 2 weeks if possible because the plasma exchange would take out all of what they had spent 5 days pumping into her system.

The update today was a bit more positive. They did the tracheotomy on Wed afternoon, and have been able to have her less sedated as a result of the tubes not being down her throat. She smiled at my brother today and was able to move her eyes a bit. She had not been able to move her eyes much at all, and was even sleeping with her eyes open - another symptom of the condition. She had also been mouthing "help" at my brother when she would see him, and apparently she was more calm about all the "stuff" today.

They had been giving her some sort of anti-anxiety drug, but that seemed to be causing her blood pressure to go VERY low so that was stopped.

All in all it sounded more positive today than it has for awhile.

I have not yet made plans to go there, but think they will need me more when the recovery effort moves home. They will likely need some sort of long term assistance for the recovery, but will probably need help in the interim until it can all be arranged. Tough being too far to just drive down over the weekend and see them ...

thanks for the positive thoughts ..
and, Bob, you know I'm sending them out to you and Deb through all the treatments ...

In spite of everything, I try to remind myself that with all I consider to be the "trials of life" there are always those who are less fortunate than I ....

I bet that '09 XT was a press vehicle. Subiesport magazine's based near Seattle... perhaps they were down @ Mt Hood. They're usually right on top of things as far as reviews go, typically releasing as much info as they can as soon as Subaru lifts whatever embargoes they have going at the time.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That is also near the port of entry for the Forester. The XT has been out on the West Coast for a while, at least a month now.

Yup, still have my patrol fanny pack with the Leatherman on the web belt. It now has a permanent place in the back of the OBW. Since I retired just have been doing bandaids and butterflies. Still stop by to check skiers that have fallen. Have put up the skiis crossed several times waiting for the on duty patrollers. But I retired as I felt that the 'ol stamina wasn't there anymore. Time to be a civilian skier again. Now the sun has to be shining and be above zero with little nor no wind. :shades:

Yeah Frank, it has been a rough winter health-wise, hopefully I am finally on the mend. The pneumonia has finally cleared up, but I still get breathless rather easily,I do woodworking so I think dust has caused part of problem, maybe reduced lung capacity. Anyway the doc says time is of the essence now. I am not doing any woodwork obviously. I don't really plan on any either at least until the fall. Maybe that will allow the old sponges to fill with air again. We'll just have to wait and see.

    Cheers Pat.

Joe Spitz now has even invoice prices up for the Forester.

LL Bean is $24,995 (invoice) with freight included, and VIP pricing is 2% below that.

Add all the Subaru Bucks I have, and that should seal the deal.

Wonder what they'll offer us for the 02 Legacy. I'll ask over in RWTIV.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
    VIP pricing.

It's been years, but I may have to rejoin the American Canoe Association and hang out for six months ... just in case. :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Yeah, LOL, I remember someone joined, bought a Subaru, and then mentioned perhaps they should go out and get in a canoe for the first time in their life! :D
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
hehe, at least I have that part covered. And I suppose my 15 year old mountain bike would count for the IMBA. My wife would spring for the National Gardening Association. I"m not joining the ski patrol though - those folks work so hard it interferes with their riding. ;)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Hey, I have a garden (juice points out after the fact!). :D

Thanks Bat. My grandmother actually passed away this morning :( but :) in that she isn't suffering now.

Nah, like I said, it had JERSEY manufacterers plates. I doubt it's a west coast car. The amazing thing is it was so clean! every other car was incredibly dirty (it was up at a ski resort).

Maybe they were taking pictures? It was nice and sunny and would have been good to do.

It definitely looks more substantial. I like it.

    Hi Brenda

I just spoke with one of our Neurologists. She told me that treatment for Guillan-Barre hasn't changed much. She told me plasmapheresis is better than IVIG and should have been done first. Even though they did the IVIG they should probably do the plasmapheresis anyway.

Hope your mom is doing better.

Just wanted to send out positive thoughts to everyone not feeling well, or has family that is not doing too well. It's Monday, the start of a new week, so hopefully things will look up.

    My requirements as well. ;)

I've had my own visit to ski patrol head quarters last season. As silly as this is I feel at the top of the first hill before even going down. Bent my arm back wrong...before I learned to fall without locking my arms! Ack!

This year I'm doing a lot better but always worried that when I do fall if I don't jump right up the snowmobile will come track me down. LOL
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181

You do realize that all the Subaru owned cars have Jersey Manufacturer Plates on them right? The PORT OF ENTRY for the Forester is up in the PNW and as such SOA folks fly up there and slap on Manf. plates all the time to cars at the port.

I often stop to ask folks if they're OK or just resting :)
Human nature is to reach a hand out & try to defend yourself from a fall... sometimes you're just better off tucking, rolling and going with gravity! :surprise:

Two Subarus need oil changes at my house this week! I need to find a way to get the GT off the ground a bit - the ramps vs. ground clearance are an issue. Might have to substitute the floor jack & jack stands.

    Cheers!

I just did the ONE HUNDRED 60K mile service on the Forester!

    Len
  • leo2633leo2633 Member Posts: 589
I had a ramp clearance problem on a vehicle I used to own. I solved it by laying the removable ramp plates on 1" thick boards that had 2x3s attached to them. The plates rested on the 2x3s, allowing the car to "step up" to the ramp plates, which were now at a shallower angle (if that explanation makes any sense). That wouldn't work with the one piece "Rhino" ramps I use now (no clearance issues with any of my current vehicles). In doing oil changes on my Forester and Outback, I drive up onto one ramp (driver's side only), which tilts the car enough to put the drain plug at the lowest point.

    Good luck!

I'm due for an oil change on the Legacy.

I'm hoping to trade it in with 59,999 miles so I don't have to do the 60k mile service! :D
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Wow I just rolled 50k on my 05 LGT that I got in July with 30k on it.

    -mike
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
Alas, my ramps are one piece, but the step-up idea has merit. Lots of old 2x6 pieces of fence rail around here I could use to make the gradual transition. Failing that I think the floor jack & stands will work. And the 16 year-old actually asked to watch/assist when I do the '97! :surprise:

    Cheers!

they should have canceled school today ... the roads were ridiculous ... I was almost rear-ended twice before I got 1/4 mile from school and I left EARLY ...

we are supposed to get more tonight .. and it's BLOWING .....

if we all get in tomorrow ... the kids are having a 'snowman-building' adventure ... the classes are going out for about 1/2 hour to build snowmen near the windows of their classes ...

My Miata barely clears my Rhino ramps. The subies have no problem.

They make a bigger Rhino ramp, too. If I were getting one now, I'd probably get those.

I couldn't get the old BD to clear anything one I put STi v5 struts on it.

My sister and bro-in-law just bought a 2007 OBLLBean from Fitzmall last night. So now it's only the wife's side of the family that hasn't come over. :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We'll be getting an LL Bean (Forester) from the same dealer soon. Hopefully very soon!

    Tell her Congrats! :shades:

Hey Brenda and everyone else suffering through the current tough winter in the upper mid-west.... sunny and 80 degrees here :P

My sister and B-I-L were here this past weekend from Chicago. They flew back yesterday and were greeted by temps in the teens and when they got to their car at the airport parking lot, it had been plowed in

Meanwhile, I've been commuting to work with the top down :shades:

    I concur with those sentiments.

Fantastic weather here in Fairbanks. We just came down off a "Pineapple Express" last week, with sunny days and temperatures as high as 40 or more in the day. We are still reaching 20's during the day with overnight lows around -15 to -20. Clear skies and sunlight. Who could ask for more than that?

Yessir, I do not care what ol' Phil says, spring is coming to Fairbanks right on time this year. Of course, it is still 8-10 weeks off. :D

41 on the hill and 60 in town - blinding sun everywhere and you could see the Sawtooths from the hill today. Nice having light past 7pm again too. And I have a lead on another Miata. :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm always looking for those, too.

Found a very clean 2006 Miata with only 7k miles in Salisbury, MD. Search on cars.com.

Dealer is selling it as a "Club Spec" (i.e. stripped, with no A/C even) but I can tell from the photos and the equipment level that it's actually a GT (nearly loaded).

It's very underpriced at $17k. They don't realize what they have. That was a $23k car, minimum, just 7k miles ago. $6000 off for 7000 miles?

    Snap it up. Hurry.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Miatas are overpriced here (especially on days like today).

I'm working on a swap - my Outback for an older one. Probably won't happen and I'll probably regret it the first time I try to go to Bogus in a Miata and rip the oil pan off on a snowball. :shades:
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
so you're not being sympathetic but just telling us how wonderful your weather is?

YOU try finding the leftovers from the Chinese restaurant in your car 3 days later and eating it without getting sick !

    lol ...

    yeah .. it's been a bit 'chilly' here ....

news on my mom continues to improve at this point .. today she was moved out of ICU ... brother seems to think she could probably do a bit more physically than he's seen, but she doesn't try very much ...and sometimes she says some "random" things, but then she'd already started doing that at times ...

Brenda- After all you've been thru with family issues, family member health issues and miserable weather to top it all off.... You've certainly got my sympathy.

Your mom being moved out of ICU certainly sounds like good news at least.

Before you know it spring will be here and hopefully the entire family, healthy and happy again, can go for a picnic!

    Mike,
Sorry to here about your loss.

I've been very busy lately and haven't kept up with the threads.

    Bob, How is Deb?

Big Elm, are you doing OK?

Brenda, my thoughts are with you - be positive, be strong.

    Spring skiing here we come!

I can remember earlier in the season doing sweep in the dark! Nice that there's a bit more light for the drive home as well - 4th of July Pass is ugly in the dark & wet!

Nice having light past 7pm again too

I think this is the best time of year. From now until the middle, perhaps end, of April. The light is just... better... this time of year. Maybe it is from due appreciation after the long dark of winter, even if the temperatures are still cold. Our light is effectively up to about 6:30pm, but increasing quickly (7 minutes) every day. Three months from now and I will be enjoying light in the sky 24 hours a day. Well, okay, I will enjoy it for 20 hours, because I still have to get a little bit of sleep. :shades:

Okay guys, we recently got a new computer and as I recently posted it has been a lousy winter health wise. Now several times when I felt like I could stay focused for a bit I have tried getting into the chat.
However I get into a chat room but nobody is there. I get the welcome to the subaru chat, and all that good stuff but I am home alone. I downloaded the latest version of Java thinking that was the problem but no joy. Can somebody point out what I am doing wrong.

    Cheers Pat.

    G'day

I've got the same problem. Installed new graphics card and should be able to see Chat, but get nowhere. What do I need to get access?

    Cheers

It may not be your computers - several people reported problems getting into the chat tonight. ModBob reported the bug.

"Three months from now and I will be enjoying light in the sky 24 hours a day. "

That is still one of the most amazing things I remember from when we were up near Denali. Came out of the bar to go back to the room at 11:30 at night and it was just like it was 3PM back home! I could take it for a couple of days, but not sure how I would handle months like that.

All that light is wonderful. I don't miss the counterpart in January however. Boise is so close to the time zone line between MST and PST we seem to have light later than people across the zone.

Update on the ski crash is a torn ACL and small peripheral tear in the medial meniscus. I tried and tried to get her to switch to a snowboard....
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
Ergh.... Sorry about your wife's injury. Knee injuries are simply aweful as there is really no way to get around using a knee.....

I agree about the light. Mark, there are quite a few people around here who have a hard time dealing with it as well. I see folks go so far as to tinfoil their windows to stop it. Personally, I love it. The only trouble I have with the light is my desire to keep going and going. Sometimes I will find myself working on the house until midnight or later, even with work the next morning! Not surprisingly, I tend to get 6 hours of sleep during the summer yet I find it difficult to function in the winter even with 8-9... :D

The dark does not really bother me either; the cold limits my outdoor forays far more than the darkness. I sure do appreciate this time of year though, with the sun coming back with enough intensity to actually warm you. Nothing is more depressing than day after day of overcast skies this time of year. Thankfully, we have had about two weeks of clear skies.

Outdoor broomball again tonight and the temps should be around zero. If folks show up on time, we might actually get an hour of it with daylight! Exciting...
