Have fun Mark.... when you get back, you're not going to want to get off the ship when it docks in NYC, lol!

Husband's mom was "awake" today and knew that her husband and daughter were there. She was talking to them off and on. She seems to be aware and "normal". Still early .. but sounds great after days of "no change" ...

They took her off the ventilator yesterday so I guess that the sedation that they had her on during that period has worn off enough to allow her to "wake up" ...

That's great new Brenda! See, the power of good thoughts works! More coming your way...

Good to hear, Brenda. Your family has been in my prayers. Has she been feisty with the nurses yet? :)

And speaking of progress... how's your wife been doing, Bob? She handling the hair loss/queasiness/tiredness okay? How much treatment does she have left? Please let her know folks here are still thinking positive thoughts for her (and for you, as well).
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
don't know how she's treating her nurses .. we'll be over there this weekend to check on her and see what's up ...

I told husband she was just waiting for her "favorite child" to get here to start responding to everyone/everything ....

Glad she's doing better! There have been medical studies on prayer and patient recovery done by non-religious doctors and to their surprise patients who were prayed for did better! :)

LOL... good to hear about the progress Brenda...

Well, I received some bitter news yesterday. I went in to see the Dr. for the MRI follow up and I have a Lambur tear in my shoulder. Lambur is what holds the shoulder bone socket in place. My shoulder tends to 'pop' on occasion and hurts like a motha'. Anyway, I'll need Arthroscopic surgery which according to the Dr. it won't be as bad as cutting me up, but there will still be recovery time and more therapy :( Surgery won't be till another 2 wks but I guess I have to time to prepare :/
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,732
Yeah, the news of needed surgery is never good news. At least it is fixable, which means that after recovery you have some pain-free living to which you may look forward! And, no big scars if it is arthroscopic.

I have torn meniscus in both my knees for about the past three years. The doctors said surgery right after the tears happened, but I have instead been taking glucosamine sulfate tablets (1 daily) and, after about the first two weeks of taking them, the joint pain in my knees is nearly gone. Only after very strenuous activities, like running, biking, or team sports, do they hurt badly. I figure that if they bother me bad enough to interfere with my willingness to engage in activities I enjoy, I will do something about it. ;)

    Elmer,

I can feel your pain, brother! First off, I see you were in a car accident, resulting in back injury. Me too. I was rear-ended a few years ago, and suffered 7 herniated discs (three in my back and four in my neck). I underwent numerous procedures to get some pain relief, but nothing lasted longer than a few weeks. Because of the amount of discs injured, I'm not a candidate for surgery. However, I have had a total of FIVE surgeries on both shoulders. I never tore my labrum, but I did tear both rotator cuffs a few times. The surgeries definitely helped me. You should heal pretty quickly from arthroscopic surgery, and the scars are minimal, but physical therapy takes a while.

Check out a website called shoulder1.com. They have a lot of good info and patient forums. Good luck with your surgery.

Hey Bob, I'm sure you saw it, but caught a quick clip of the rear coil springed Dodge Ram they introduced in Detroit. You called it a few years ago (and I agreed) about coils and indy rear. I think we'll see indy rear pickups very soon. Heck Toyota and Nissan already have the platforms to do it.

Well it's a step in the right direction. And I have to attest that my indy rear truck can tow 11,000lbs w/o over-stressing the rear suspension much, so it's only a matter of time til they get them too I think. Great call on your part like 5 or 7 years ago???

It's never been a matter of—can they do it? Heck, many severe service Oshkosh military trucks have IFS/IRS.

    http://www.oshkoshtruck.com/defense/products~wtanker~home.cfm

    http://www.oshkoshtruck.com/defense/products~lvsr~home.cfm

If it can work on trucks like that, surely they can develop IRS for pickups, even HD versions.

The problem has always been trying to "sell" the idea to a traditionally very conservative customer (pickup truck buyers).

awwww .. sorry to hear you have to have the surgery ... I know I started this "thread", but anyone else hear the "old people" themes in here? ... now that we've covered health ... should we talk about the weather????

We went to see husband's mother on Saturday. Before we could get to the hospital (90 miles away), we had a call from his sister. The hospital had called to tell them that Mom was in a chair and had taken off the straps holding her in, tried to get up, and fallen on her nose. They were taking her to x-ray to check her head and neck.

When we got to see her, she was wearing a neck collar and we were waiting for the results. She was a bit "out of it" during that visiting time. While in the room, they will allow her hands to be free of the "loose" restraints that they have had on her from pulling out tubes, etc. She kept trying to take the monitor off her index finger - and telling us she couldn't dial the cell phone with it on there! She also kept pulling at her sheet on one side. She finally told us she was trying to find her checkbook in her purse. It was "in and out" a bit during that visit.

Dad and sister went back home early afternoon and we stayed to see her again later. When we went back in about 4 hours later, she was "better". Seemed to know us, and was more coherent, although she kept worrying about the W-2's being done. (They do have employees.) We kept telling her that Dad and sister were taking care of it! She also wants pajama BOTTOMS on!

Physically things seem to continue to improve slowly. She's frustrated that she can't move more and has no strength. Last night she was trying to stretch her arms and she was stretching far enough to raise her shoulder off the bed. I think one time she stretched far enough it hurt and she said, "SH*T!" Actually that's pretty normal for her!

Certainly seems like she has some of her spunk back, that has to be a positive sign. Might be time to remind the hospital staff how 'spunky' she normally is. ;)

We thought we had .... feisty was the word we used ....

husband said she seemed more tired today, but we suspect they are having her move more and with less medications ... so I would think that would be expected ...

along with the rest, i have a daughter who is getting married this saturday ... i drove to indy yesterday to pick up the oldest daughter who will be here for a week .. the middle daughter is the one living with us, and the youngest daughter (the bride) came to have dinner with us last night, too .... it was the first time all 3 girls and i have been in the same place at one time since april of 2001 ... we've come close a few times, but never quite managed it ...

i knew it would happen that it would be difficult for all of us to be together at some point, but didn't know it would happen so soon! my girls are 25, 27, and 30 ... so 7 years ago they were still pretty young ....(well they still are, but you know what i mean!)

husband sends his family updates on his mom .. this was yesterday's ... (and at least he's not taking care of ME at this point .. I took a nasty spill walking into a restaurant last night .. slipped on ice and fell just inside the doorway ... I think gloves and coat helped protect me a bit, but have a couple of sore spots today! - and daughters were teasing me because the last words out of my mouth were ... be careful, it's really slick!)

I'm not sure how to say this, but when I went in today there was a crabby, nasty old women who told a doctor, and I quote "I'd be better if my smart [non-permissible content removed] kids would stop telling me I can't go home" Yay, my mom's back! She was more alert and sharper than she has been in two weeks, She kept telling us to get her bed lower "somewhere closer to the equator" then help her up 'cause she was going home! Her nero...her nuro...umm..her brain doctor came in and said she was doing great still keeping her on the anti-seizure drugs but no sign of any seizures other than the 2 she had right after surgery. She swallowed a couple pills and had a few sips of water so the nurse was going to talk to the Doctor about maybe slowly adding real food. So all in all it seemed to be a good day, I went back to see her at the later visiting hour....stayed for about 20 minutes but she was sound asleep so I just let her rest. Oh yeah, I knew she was better when she asked where her teeth were! She can't put them in yet, but she wanted to know where the hell they were so when they said she could... Hopefully she will get to be transferred out of the ICU soon

    Cool, Brenda.

    Take care of yourself, too!
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
He went to see his mom today and couldn't find her! They'd moved her to a regular room .. it was also the first day she was given real food to eat (not in a feeding tube!) ...

You may have noticed that John Ritter's family has filed a suit against the hospital and doctors who tried to 'help him' when he had the aortic dissection .. this is the same thing that husband's mother had ... we are fortunate it was not misdiagnosed!

daughter's wedding day today .. and right now it's 26 and snowing .. should have seen all us women coming to church in formal dress and snow boots!! .. then slipping on shoes once we were there ...

wedding went off great ... we have a bit of time between wedding and reception at 5 this evening ... I'm ready for the party !!!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Wow Brenda! Congrats to everyone! This has been one heck of a month for you!

    Bob
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
yeah .. as a matter of fact .. it HAS been a big month...

daughter is here from Texas .. picked her up last Monday, and will take her back to Indy for plane tomorrow (about 3 hour drive) .. have an aunt who arrived from Texas on Wed, and will return on Wed this week ...

the reception was a fun party ... they had a great DJ and you'd be hard pressed to find a bride who looked like she had more fun at her party ... the DJ is supposed to post his pictures today, and if they are flattering to me, I may share the URL (lol) ...

add all this to everything with the mother-in-law (who is doing so well at this point - although much rehabilitation still in the future - and I'm so glad she's doing well because she's been wonderful to me and my children) ...

and the job is absolute hell right now... between the difficulties with the students and the paperwork nightmare ... it's been a real MONTH !!!

see you guys on down the road...

thanks .. if any of you guys are interested ... the pics from the reception that the DJ took are posted on his site ... you have to go to photos, and then to Elizabeth and Adam from 1-26-08

The bride is my daughter, the maid of honor with blonde hair and the black dress with the grey accents on the top is her sister, and the one with the really dark hair in the black dress is her oldest sister ... somewhere in there you will spot a really good-looking older woman with blonde hair and glasses in a black dress with a shiny jacket over it ... of course that's me ...

    if you're interested ...

Went today with the kids, and met up with Bob there.

It was funny, too, because it was my daugther that asked if Bob was coming. Not once but twice. She has a great memory, and since Bob was there last year she just assumed he would want to go.

Sure enough, we called, and he decided to meet us there! The kids were thrilled to see him.

We crawled in and around lots of compact SUVs, and compared them to the 09 Forester. We thought Subaru did a great update, and may have one in the fleet fairly soon.

husband's mother was moved by ambulance yesterday from the hospital where she was flown for the surgery back to the hospital in her home town ... she probably still will be cranky and lobbying to go home, but at least more of her friends can go to see her ... and it will be much easier for her husband to get there to see her !

so she spent 16 days in ICU, and then 3 more days in a regular hospital room before being moved yesterday ... tomorrow will be 3 weeks since the aortic dissection occurred ... seems to me that's pretty fast - especially since she spent a full week lying there not really responding to us!!!

we didn't really have ALL that much snow .. but it was 54 degrees (and raining) at 7 pm last night .. and it was -1 a bit earlier this morning with -25 degree wind chill .. so school was canceled .. partially because kids shouldn't be standing out waiting for a bus or walking to school in that weather!

husband took my Outback to work this morning because his car was all frozen shut ... lol

I felt better about him driving it in!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My wife used to take my Forester, too. We had to get her one so that would stop. ;)
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
My wife took the red one skiing the other day, just to save gas vs. the Suburban :)

We are geting slammed with one snow event right after another, with the next system due tonight - up to 7 inches of fresh! Ski report says 'bring your snorkel!'

The '99 goes good - although I notice the ground clearance difference around town - navigating the berms etc. the newer, 55-series studless tires mean less power-sliding fun! :D

    Cheers!

slammed with one snow event right after another,

Us too, and I have novices in town to learn boarding. Sure wish we'd get some bluebird days but there's snow in the forecast every day for the next week. Never seen snow last so long in town either. Plenty of sliding opportunities! :shades:

my aunt left here yesterday morning to drive to Indy to catch her flight home to Houston .. of course she's not used to driving in the winter weather!

she said it took her about an hour to go the first 30 miles, but once she got south of town a bit, the road was better - and this is a US highway ... she did make her flight and got back to Houston .. . it was minus one degree with wind chills hovering in the minus 20 to minus 25 degree range, and it was close to 60 when she got home ... quite a range of temps for her yesterday !!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I heard on the news this morning that NY got no snow in January, now that's weird!

We've only had one light dusting and one other couple of inches with freezing rain, but nothing that would help boost Subaru sales.

I remember in winter 2002-2003, when we bought the Legacy, it snowed 6 times!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,732
-1 a bit earlier this morning with -25 degree wind chill .. so school was canceled

Hahahha, canceled. The only time I have ever seen school canceled around here was one day in February, about 5 years ago, when the temperature was too warm. 35-degree temps combined with rain on top of our icy roads meant havoc for the school buses and those with marginal tires.

Cool, my timing is working out perfectly...

Just got another $100 Subaru Bucks. We will probably hit the $500 annual limit next month, right around the time the Forester is in dealers. :shades:

I have $1600, so that's a pretty sweet discount. If they had deals like they did for the Tribeca intro ($500 LL Bean certificate or Sat. Radio) I may get one very early on. Else we may wait a little, but not long.

I'm hoping prices stay flat, so even if the $1500 rebate goes away we'll still pay about what they cost now. We're looking for an LL Bean or an X Premium.

    Pretty exciting. :shades:

That's great, Juice! I used $400 on my Subaru last fall, and now, 4 months later, I have another $400. Haha. Figures.

My good news is that I have a person genuinely interested in buying the car. Hopefully it will come back from the shop today so I can get it spotless and she can take a look at it. I dropped the car off Monday morning for the dealer to address the obnoxious interior rattles again. Today marks day 4 of it being there, so they sure better get it sorted out this time (the 4th attempt!).
