The essentials from the story:
With several hours still to spare today, South Bend has already set a single-day snowfall record. From midnight to 1 p.m. today, 23.6 inches of snow had blanketed South Bend Regional Airport, while 34.2 inches of the white stuff had fallen since 7 a.m. Friday.
The snowfall amount breaks the old mark — a midnight-to-midnight total — of 20 inches set on Jan. 30, 1909.
The story goes on to say that the northwest area seemed to be hardest hit ... near where the husband works. He is planning to drive my Subaru to work tonight! (I can't ever remember him wanting to take my car instead of his ... ever ... ever ... ever ... lol)

Ours were closed on Friday but only got about 7-8". I went to work anyhow (hey, what excuse do I have owning an OBW with new winter tires???).
The drive home was easier than expected. The roads were rough, but the new Conti ExtremeWinters were terrific. And I am very glad that I opted for the optional narrower tire (215/65 vs the stock 225/60). Great bite!
Bigger storm headed our way for tomorrow afternoon. It has already been a pretty rough winter with the outlook of plenty more to come.
That is how the snow used to fall in eastern Oregon. We would occasionally get 12-14" over night, then the next day or two the wind would kick up to 30-50 mph and drift everything closed, knock out the power for a day or two, etc. As kids, we absolutely loved it!
That plus he did 2 "extra credit" tricks, play dead and shake.
We didn't get the wind (at least not yet) and the snow is not as light and puffy as it was when it fell so .... although more snow is predicted this week ... I think the prediction for the last snowfall was 4-6" .. they might have missed that one a little bit - but lake effect snow can be very unpredictable.
The "chocolate" dog story ... years ago we had gone to husband's work family get-together and I took a homemade (very rich) chocolate cake with (very rich) chocolate icing. We got there a bit late, and there were many, many sweets and other foods out. For whatever reason, it only had about 3 pieces gone when we left. We stopped at a friend's house on the way home. The kids all piled out of the back of the Suburban and ran in the house. A few minutes later, the 2 husbands went outside and saw the back door of the Suburban open, so they shut it. Well .... they had a lab who absolutely LOVED to ride in THEIR Suburban so it had jumped in when no one was looking. When we opened the door a while later to leave, the dog jumped out and surprised us. The pan in the car was completely clean. I mean it looked like it hadn't been used at all, and there was no cake/icing anywhere inside the truck. It seems the dog was very sick all night long ........ but did survive ...
So far this year just dustings, nothing big.
Lake effect snow is weird. I live close to the big lake now, and the weather gets better the closer you get to the lake.
I bet paisan is gonna get hit, though, as the storm is mostly north of Philly.

I still managed to slip and fall on my driveway! Shoulda worn boots instead of dress shoes.
Luckily only hurt my pride!
I finished it off with a few rides down the hill with my youngest. Funny, but I don't remember sledding being so hard on the body when I was younger!
I had a 'new' experience for me today. When I got home, the snow plows had been on our street today and cleared our cul de sac. Of course they also left a big "snow/ice dam" at the end of the driveway. Normally I just turn on in and plow on over it. I took a look at the size of it and parked in the street while I went into the garage and got a shovel to knock some of it down a bit. I don't think I'd have made it into the driveway without doing that ... and I've NEVER had to do that before ...
We had snow on Tues->Wed last week about 9", not nearly as much as the 29" we got in Dec. We also got some snow/ice last night maybe another 5-6" and I'm right on the Hudson River @ the GWB!
During the 48hrs we had some snow showers but nothing major enough to really hinder our movement.
The plant was AMAZING!

Our Boy Scout troop went snow tubing, but my family extended the trip and I tried snow boarding.
Once, and never again! I'm as sore as I think I've ever been, both knees and one, uh, rear cheek especially. OUUUUUUch!
I should have bagged it and gone to SIA!
Give it another chance juice - my first time I got a minor concussion but have been boarding for 4 years now and love it. I think we're about the same age - I've learned to gear up though: padded shorts under my snow pants, helmet, wrist guards, knee pads!! Another tip - 2 Advil at regular intervals: on the drive up, at lunch, during PM break, on the ride home.
I didn't know your son was a Boy Scout - mine is too. His troop went on a high adventure trip this past weekend - 8 mile hike up to an AMC hut in NH. High temp of 6 degrees and they slept in the unheated bunkhouse.
Eagle Scout here....
Bat is also an Eagle Scout!
So far we have raised over $45,000 for ACS this year on the 48hrs!
I really want to grab you guys in the DC area for next years 48hrs. I have the date already so PLEASE Mark your calendars!

OK, now lets explore college - Anybody a member of Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity? APO is a spiritual extension of the BSA.

My son is Life and plans on reaching Eagle by his 15th birthday next year. This summer he's off to Philmont. We have Klondike derby next weekend. Last one the low was -12. They have 2 more winter trips in February. I'm an ASM and our troop embraces winter camping with regular troop trips and high adventure for upper ranks and more experienced scouts. But we also have 2 crews off to Seabase next month!!
My wife is a GS leader and she works hard getting those girls outside. GS is more than cookies and crafts.
I'd like to be able to help them out, and keep an eye on them. Basically I want to be at a higher level so I feel like I'm in control, and that was *not* the case this past weekend.
My son struggled at first but picked it up better than I did, and he's just 8! But his mittens got wet, and I gave him my gloves, so I had none - not good. They had overalls and I did not, though I did have two layers of pants (not nearly enough!).
We'll go again, wifey is already pre-planning.

I swear, the newer ones just don't do it for me. Slaves to the wind tunnel, perhaps?
It's like aerodynamics now takes precedent over the beauty of the artists' pen.

Although it is completely different, I have always had a connection to the Countach, having owned the Matchbox version since a very young child. When it came out, the look was revolutionary. Look how many designs since have been derivative with a splash of wind-tunnel compromise thrown in.

AJ (juice), Ed (hopefully), and Patti (hopefully), and I are going to be there on Monday the 31st. That's the only time AJ can make it. Any chance you can make it on Monday?
Bob
I'm not going to be there, though I wish I was. Michael and some of his Temple U AEPi brothers are going this weekend.
Initially you also said you wanted to go on a weekday.
I do have plans both weekend days, though.
Big hoops weekend!
