    http://www.wsbt.com/news/wsbt-south-bend-breaks-singleday-sn-01082011,0,4240388.- story

    The essentials from the story:

With several hours still to spare today, South Bend has already set a single-day snowfall record. From midnight to 1 p.m. today, 23.6 inches of snow had blanketed South Bend Regional Airport, while 34.2 inches of the white stuff had fallen since 7 a.m. Friday.

The snowfall amount breaks the old mark — a midnight-to-midnight total — of 20 inches set on Jan. 30, 1909.

The story goes on to say that the northwest area seemed to be hardest hit ... near where the husband works. He is planning to drive my Subaru to work tonight! (I can't ever remember him wanting to take my car instead of his ... ever ... ever ... ever ... lol)

Holy Cow! No snow here yet but they say tonight and tomorrow. Its been cold but not too windy, and was 12 degrees F when we started the hunt this morning. No birds btw :(

How far are you from the SIA plant? We will be there next friday for the 48hrs of tristate. http://48hrs.info

Not quite 2 hours ... I've been past the plant a few times, but never have stopped ... I know that's where my car was assembled!
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Very nice! I'll bet the kids (school aged) loved it.

Ours were closed on Friday but only got about 7-8". I went to work anyhow (hey, what excuse do I have owning an OBW with new winter tires???).

The drive home was easier than expected. The roads were rough, but the new Conti ExtremeWinters were terrific. And I am very glad that I opted for the optional narrower tire (215/65 vs the stock 225/60). Great bite!

Bigger storm headed our way for tomorrow afternoon. It has already been a pretty rough winter with the outlook of plenty more to come.

That's impressive! Even if the snow abates soon, I sure hope you don't get any significant wind for a while; otherwise, South Bend might just disappear for a while! :surprise:

That is how the snow used to fall in eastern Oregon. We would occasionally get 12-14" over night, then the next day or two the wind would kick up to 30-50 mph and drift everything closed, knock out the power for a day or two, etc. As kids, we absolutely loved it! :D

As expected Tank passed with flying colors, a perfect score actually. :shades:

That plus he did 2 "extra credit" tricks, play dead and shake.

Nice! I don't do the obedience training thing any more, but I don't recall any perfect scores when I was in that circle. Usually the dogs would display nervousness that caused a couple of minor deductions, especially when they were young animals.

Neither would I normally - but it was a requirement from the animal shelter, so we obliged.

I didn't get much sleep Saturday night, as my 'dumb as a rock' yellow lab ate a chocolate bar and was up sick. My little one left it within reach when we went out for the evening, so inducing vomiting was pretty much too late. Only real option was to ride it out. She weighs enough that it wasn't lethal, just distressing. We kept her penned in downstairs to keep her from messing inside, but the whining to go out every hour meant that I was constantly on call. But she survived. Too bad.... (just kidding...)

Well, the snow didn't help "me" much as far as leisure time. While the South Bend schools were closed today, I teach in Mishawaka and we were open. South Bend/Mishawaka is pretty much all one big city. They are literally across the street from one another and you'd never know you were leaving one and entering the other unless you know where the boundaries run.

We didn't get the wind (at least not yet) and the snow is not as light and puffy as it was when it fell so .... although more snow is predicted this week ... I think the prediction for the last snowfall was 4-6" .. they might have missed that one a little bit - but lake effect snow can be very unpredictable.

The "chocolate" dog story ... years ago we had gone to husband's work family get-together and I took a homemade (very rich) chocolate cake with (very rich) chocolate icing. We got there a bit late, and there were many, many sweets and other foods out. For whatever reason, it only had about 3 pieces gone when we left. We stopped at a friend's house on the way home. The kids all piled out of the back of the Suburban and ran in the house. A few minutes later, the 2 husbands went outside and saw the back door of the Suburban open, so they shut it. Well .... they had a lab who absolutely LOVED to ride in THEIR Suburban so it had jumped in when no one was looking. When we opened the door a while later to leave, the dog jumped out and surprised us. The pan in the car was completely clean. I mean it looked like it hadn't been used at all, and there was no cake/icing anywhere inside the truck. It seems the dog was very sick all night long ........ but did survive ...

We've got a small storm system on its way, and may get another small bit of snow.

So far this year just dustings, nothing big.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
We've had a few inches today and more in the lake effect snow machine for tonight ... it's really slippery out there right now ...
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I slid into a handily placed convenience store parking lot today turning left around 25mph.

Lake effect snow is weird. I live close to the big lake now, and the weather gets better the closer you get to the lake.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Just started pretty thick - but we're only supposed to get 1-3", so nothing major.

I bet paisan is gonna get hit, though, as the storm is mostly north of Philly.
  • KCRamKCRam Member Posts: 3,516
Here in the northwest corner of NJ, I got 10 inches from the Christmas blizzard, and I'm expecting 6 or 7 from this one. My parents are in northeast NJ (about 8 miles west of NYC) and got 16 in the blizzard, and are expecting 10-11 with this storm.

good thing that parking lot was there! This afternoon I turned onto Main Street which "looked" almost clear and I guess it was .. - CLEAR ICE !!! ... luckily I wasn't going fast but it still fishtailed all over for a bit ...
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
We got maybe 2" last night. So much for this big east-coast storm... :(

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Inch and a half of snow here.

I still managed to slip and fall on my driveway! Shoulda worn boots instead of dress shoes.

    Luckily only hurt my pride!
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Drive 7 hours north Bob. I just came in from clearing 15" off my driveway and it's still coming down.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
We got what you didn't, falling at the rate of 1-2" per hour overnight. Went to bed with a dusting, woke up to about 14+" avg with drifts to about 18". My back is toast.... 4 hours with the snow blower & roof rake.

I finished it off with a few rides down the hill with my youngest. Funny, but I don't remember sledding being so hard on the body when I was younger!

we have plenty if anyone wants to come 'play' ...

I had a 'new' experience for me today. When I got home, the snow plows had been on our street today and cleared our cul de sac. Of course they also left a big "snow/ice dam" at the end of the driveway. Normally I just turn on in and plow on over it. I took a look at the size of it and parked in the street while I went into the garage and got a shovel to knock some of it down a bit. I don't think I'd have made it into the driveway without doing that ... and I've NEVER had to do that before ...

    Back from the 48hrs guys.

We had snow on Tues->Wed last week about 9", not nearly as much as the 29" we got in Dec. We also got some snow/ice last night maybe another 5-6" and I'm right on the Hudson River @ the GWB!

During the 48hrs we had some snow showers but nothing major enough to really hinder our movement.

    The plant was AMAZING!

Sounds like fun, mike, especially the plant tour.

Our Boy Scout troop went snow tubing, but my family extended the trip and I tried snow boarding.

Once, and never again! I'm as sore as I think I've ever been, both knees and one, uh, rear cheek especially. OUUUUUUch!

I should have bagged it and gone to SIA!

...but my family extended the trip and I tried snow boarding.

Give it another chance juice - my first time I got a minor concussion but have been boarding for 4 years now and love it. I think we're about the same age - I've learned to gear up though: padded shorts under my snow pants, helmet, wrist guards, knee pads!! Another tip - 2 Advil at regular intervals: on the drive up, at lunch, during PM break, on the ride home.

I didn't know your son was a Boy Scout - mine is too. His troop went on a high adventure trip this past weekend - 8 mile hike up to an AMC hut in NH. High temp of 6 degrees and they slept in the unheated bunkhouse.

Winter Scout adventures - oh how I remember them well. Kind of glad that I have Girl Scouts and don't get roped into those long, cold outdoor trips!

    Eagle Scout here....
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I am also an Eagle Scout !

Bat is also an Eagle Scout!

So far we have raised over $45,000 for ACS this year on the 48hrs!

I really want to grab you guys in the DC area for next years 48hrs. I have the date already so PLEASE Mark your calendars!

My son is Life and plans on reaching Eagle by his 15th birthday next year. This summer he's off to Philmont. We have Klondike derby next weekend. Last one the low was -12. They have 2 more winter trips in February. I'm an ASM and our troop embraces winter camping with regular troop trips and high adventure for upper ranks and more experienced scouts. But we also have 2 crews off to Seabase next month!!

My wife is a GS leader and she works hard getting those girls outside. GS is more than cookies and crafts.

The kids want to go again, but I think I'll ski next time.

I'd like to be able to help them out, and keep an eye on them. Basically I want to be at a higher level so I feel like I'm in control, and that was *not* the case this past weekend.

My son struggled at first but picked it up better than I did, and he's just 8! But his mittens got wet, and I gave him my gloves, so I had none - not good. They had overalls and I did not, though I did have two layers of pants (not nearly enough!).

We'll go again, wifey is already pre-planning.

Bob found this, but the funny part is...that's our Forester, even down to the color, and the dog driving looks like our dog Tank!

Some of those older cars are simply stunning.

I swear, the newer ones just don't do it for me. Slaves to the wind tunnel, perhaps?

It's like aerodynamics now takes precedent over the beauty of the artists' pen.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
You can thank CAFE for that. The more aerodynamic the better the milage...

Juice, the old ones have class, they have sensuality, that's the difference
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Honestly? I think modern supercars are, for the most part, ugly. Yes I'm including the Veyron and the Enzo.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
I'm not sure I'd say ugly, but they do lack the character of those old designs. Always loved the sweeping lines of the old gull wing Benz or of the GT or 60's Ferraris. That's why I love the Elise/Evora too.
Although it is completely different, I have always had a connection to the Countach, having owned the Matchbox version since a very young child. When it came out, the look was revolutionary. Look how many designs since have been derivative with a splash of wind-tunnel compromise thrown in.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The new Benz gullwing is just plain awkward compared to the old one. It's like they stopped designing aft of the B-pillar, and the sheetmetal just falls off behind it.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
My son Dave was down for a day or so, and I noticed that someone stole the roof rack cross bars off his Outback Sport! Can you believe that!!!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Whoa...seriously? Don't you need a torx screw driver to remove it? Bold theft!

    Serge,

AJ (juice), Ed (hopefully), and Patti (hopefully), and I are going to be there on Monday the 31st. That's the only time AJ can make it. Any chance you can make it on Monday?

  • lilbluewgn02lilbluewgn02 Member Posts: 1,089
    Bob,
I'm not going to be there, though I wish I was. Michael and some of his Temple U AEPi brothers are going this weekend.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Throw me under the bus why don't ya...

    ;)

Initially you also said you wanted to go on a weekday.

I do have plans both weekend days, though.
