Neat vid, though I wonder if he has traction/stability control off, I mean really off? Maybe bigger rear sway bars, too?

Also, the track is a bit wet.

Seriously; it is too early in the year for weather like this!

    You're in where, Fairbanks?

    Yes.

Perhaps part of the problem is that the "fall" weather lingered so long, then it was just a gradual decline of temperatures into winter that steadied at about 5-10 degrees. Over the weekend, though, the temps started dipping fast....

DC is getting rain today, but I've had the top down for the past 2 days, it's been nice and mild. :shades:

A new photo...really enjoying the car so far; easy to drive, tracks very well. Noisier than the WRX. I'm thinking of putting Dynamat on the back of the rear seats, though I need to check the temps. Gotta check the interior lights, they don't shut off when in the middle position when the doors open and close. Other than that, I love it. I joined the PCA, and signed up on Rennlist and Pelican Parts (much more active...the bearded guy in the photo on the Edmunds Porsche blog is a member...Magnus Walker. He's got an amazing collection of cars, including a beautiful Jaguar E-type). I don't miss all those guitars I sold.

Just a quick poll...Carrera side stripes or not? What do you guys think? Any suggestions for a name? (it's a girl!)

and then are we doing health? (isn't that what 'old' people do?)

we went from about 60 yesterday to a wind chill of about 25 this afternoon when I was putting gas in the car ... YIKES ... talk about a wind with 'ice' on it!

No kidding, Sunday it was 61F here and very unseasonable for middle November, guess reality is checking in as scheduled. Low tonight here of 23F. Definitely heated seats time!

Stripes - what color is it again? If you do vinyl you can always pull it off.

Hahah; hey, sometimes the weather is actually a significant topic of conversation!

Today's colder here; -40 on the sign at the U. I hear it is -49 in Delta Junction, about 90 miles to the east. :surprise:

The nice thing is that we're just about bottomed out and when it warms back up to zero, the weather will seem downright balmy! It rarely gets colder than -50. The coldest I have experienced in my 16 years here is -55.

  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,730
Isn't that the truth. Steve, at least you'll have an inch less to shovel on this next round!

The one nice thing about the blistering cold is that we don't have to worry about snowfall at the same time. See, there's always an up side! :D

Doesn't look like much snow there. Filled up the Outback today; first time since February. Saw my librarian friend at the station and learned he drives an '03 OB and has the dreaded head gasket issues. Not too pleased with his ride. Didn't think to ask him if he knew about the campaign. I think he's under 100k, but no idea if his VIN qualifies.

Serge nice car, I add my vote for no stripes they are so old hat ;)

IIRC, the extended warranty on head gaskets is 8 years or 100K.

Assuming he bought it prior to 11/17/03, then it's out of warranty based on years.

    I'm actually in the same boat ... '02 w/ <70K, but 10+ years old (bought 8/01).
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,730
No, not much snow at all. We have probably received about 12" of accumulation up to now, but it has mostly come in small amounts and, especially with this extreme cold, a fair bit has sublimated at this point. Total measurable depth on the ground might be about seven or eight inches.

Bob, I had it shipped down from there...I was up there for the wedding and had a flight back. I didn't know if I was going to buy it or not.

I've decided no stripes; I saw a photo of a Guards Red Carrera with stripes and it didn't do it for me

    Fun times, Steve. Fun times.

We're saving up to get out of state again (finally) next summer, and I'm going to have to take the extra effort to stop and visit Edmunds folks this time around (including the strict prohibition of illness within my family!). Cars, weather, and kids make for great topics of conversation. :)

We just did a mile walk on the beach so if you want to do the Great Circle Tour of Lake Superior, stop in on your way to the real coast.
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,730
I would love to! Ultimately, our route will depend mostly on how much time we have to do it. My wife desperately wants to visit a friend of hers in Montreal, but then she also has a good friend who lives a little north of Detroit. My only visit to Michigan was a few brief stops at the Detroit airport while flying NWA.

I would like to take more of a road tour this time than stopping for long (week or so) periods in any one place. We might buy a house in the northeastern PA region while we're there, which would make long visits easier for the wife and kids, and it would eliminate the need to time it with the seasons.

We went to Montreal a couple of months ago on our way East. Three day drive with lots of stops; could easily do it in two, but you're going to be on vacation anyway.

You want a second home in NE PA? That's Erie. :D Would put you lots closer to Fibber Steve and Juice and lots of the other gang. That would also be close enough for me to get to (and leave my Outback behind for a rebuild, LOL).

    Hahah.

I don't want it so much, but all of her family lives in the area and, with homeschooling the kids, she wants to be able to pick up and go. With the length of the trip, being there for a while is appealing to her. The last time they did that, back in 2009, they tent-camped for six weeks. While a great experience, they were at the mercy of the weather to a large extent.

I don't know how much I'll be there, but I'm sure I will be there a few times getting the house up to par. I'd rather wait until we're done with the house here, but she seems to be getting more serious about it as the time passes. Just today she wrote, "I just discovered that the house....is about 4 mi from Woodcock Dam and maybe a ten minute walk from the fairgrounds...."

I felt like writing back, "what, you're still on about that!?" I thought better of it, though. It is awfully cold here to be sleeping in the doghouse.

Give that we can get a decent, if not small, shelter there for around $30K, it doesn't seem like such a bad trade-off.

D'oh and I even glanced at the map before posting. NE is better, we'll go basecamp with Xwes and drive into the city every day. :shades:

Just talked to an old friend in Anchorage who got a 2011 Outback a couple of months ago. They lost out on four or five before finally getting a deposit down on the one they purchased. One sold while they were on the way to the dealer to look at it.

They really didn't want the trim they got, but have recently decided that they really like having heated seats (was 8 below at their house this morning).
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
Not going to own another car, Subaru or otherwise, that doesn't have seated heats. As much as I like my LGT wagon, that is one thing I miss.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
I'm not a big leather fan and it's hard to find them in cloth seats.

And with all the sensors and sometimes side airbags built into the seats, it's harder to add seat heaters aftermarket or diy.

    Sure are nice though.

True, but North East, PA is actually in the northwestern corner of PA; only 15 miles ENE of Erie. :surprise:

I never like to advertise when I'm away (security), but just got back from a week in San Jose. Taught a class, gave an original research paper, learned a whole lot while hobnobbing with my fellow wizards, hammered out the basics of 2, possibly 3 joint development collaborations, was wined-&-dined by several suppliers. Life is good. And a good time was had by all.

Well, maybe except by my wife! While I was away she added new feature creases to the front right fender of the Sienna, she got sick, and the dog got skunked. And the kids almost drove her to drink. Other than that, she too had a good time (not).
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Paul it easy to add seat heaters, doesn't matter if it has side airbags or not, most automotive upholstery shops could do this for you.
    I added them myself to a Mazda323, and then a Mazda Protege5.

Admittedly neither one had airbags, but I watched a mechanic at my dealership replace a defective seat cover on my Mazda3 with airbags and I wouldn't hesitate to pull them apart myself.
Once the seat is unplugged from the harness it is almost impossible to trigger the air bags.

    Cheers Pat.
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
I've only seen them in Subies and VWs with cloth seats.

I think some cars have a sensor in the passenger seat in the back and shouldn't have a seat heater element there. At least that is what one of the local companies who does that stuff told me.

I thought I had heard it was sensors in the seat bottom that were the issue and that some kits only came with the element for the back. Probably varies by model. Also heard that some upholstery shops won't do them due to liability concerns. Knew about VWs but didn't know so many Subies had the cloth warmers. Good to know.

Talked to my librarian again this morning and his '02 OB was in the shop "for months" getting the head gaskets fixed a few years ago (no cost, but big hassle). Last mechanic just told him to keep watching the oil level, topping it up and not to worry about the current problem.
