I just bought a garden tractor not long ago. There are AWD models out there, but you'd better have about 10 acres and $10K! The one you pictured has all SHAFT drive, meaning it uses shafts instead of belts. I didn't buy it because the dealer I did buy from said that he replaces drive belts every, oh, 10 years or so, so why spend extra for a shaft drive? I and my wallet agreed :-) and we bought one with a kick-a** mower deck instead.

    Cheers,

I'll have a WRX 5speed to test out this weekend. Yipppeee! I'll finally be able to really comment on it.

Gee Patti, here you had us feeling sorry for you not feeling well and all and then you tell us that not only were you off gallivanting around Cape May but also are going to be driving a WRX to boot! How quickly sympathy can change to jealousy ;-)

WDB: if they say "all" shaft drive, wouldn't there have to be more than one shaft? It's kind of odd. Maybe there is one shaft for each wheel?

I found it funny and had to snap a photo.

But not as funny as this story. The other day we were going out, and we decided to take the wife's 626. So we open the door for our toddler to get in, and she screams, "NO! THAT ONE!" and points over to our Forester.

It was hilarious. I wish I had video taped it. I was speechless!

    Juice,

my two girls (age 2 and 4) are the same way. They much rather ride in the OB. In fact when we go anywhere, including walks around the neighborhood, they point out every subaru they see.... "Subawoo Subawoo....." Never though a car could be so fun.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
In your case, they may love the rear moonroof. It's great for back seat passengers, who usually feel claustrophobic.

I think ours likes the trunk monkey!

Patti - We were in Wildwood (Crest?) on Friday eating at the Crab House. I saw an OBS there that I had seen two days before at another restaurant. I parked directly in front of it. I yelled my usual "Subaru!" and the kids asked, "Do you think that person yells Subaru everytime he sees one?" I said, "Probably." :D

Have fun in the WRX! Let me know if you happen to drive up around Middlesex county this weekend.

    juice, that's one smart kid.

Ken, I don't get TNN. :-( At least I do get Speedvision though.

When you get cars from SOA, are you supposed to evaluate the car too? Or is it just an SOA "perk?"

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If you come south, I'd like to officially volunteer my, uh, services to help you evaluate your loaner. :-)

But I'd still prefer a Blitzen. We could call it durability testing. You have to see how tough our toddler is on cars!

Is patti going to grace us with her presence (and SOA's) at the Sept 15th trip? Or will she be in CA?

It would be cool to get a VDC out there. We could put that 7.9" ground clearance and traction control to the test.

I'm gonna try to find some relatively difficult trails with by-passes so that people who really want a challenge can go head over heels. We'll have enough recovery equipment to get anyone out of anywhere (I hope)

Help me understand your thought processes here: a couple of days ago you were looking for a second XT6 and working on improvements for the current one, and now you're off in pursuit of a Legacy. What's your motivation: wider parts availbility, easier bolt-ons with less adaptation, a more competitve auto-xer, all or none of the above?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;-)

    Ed
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Mostly parts availability, and age. Jim's is a '94, so it's about 6 years newer. The legacy does have more performance parts than the XT6. If I can't sell the XT6 and the mazda though, I'll probably go in a different direction entirely.

The legacy should be about on par with my XT6 on the auto-x circuit (160hp/180torque, 200lbs heavier, longer wheelbase on the legacy v. 145hp/156lbs torque on the lighter shorter wheelbased XT6)
    :)

This is something asked before, but I can not seem to find where. What is the proper tire inflation when traveling on the highway in a fully loaded OB? Right now I have been keeping it at the recommended 29 front, 30 rear. Will increasing it to say 32 all around help with handling and gas mileage? I appreciate the help, and promise I will copy the info into my Sub file so as not to lose it.

Patti -- Any news about your trip out to CA? I'm sure some of us locals would like to come and meet you in person. Just let me know and I can organize it for you.

Mark -- You should find a sticker on your driver's side door jamb with the tire inflation pressures. There should be a set of pressures for a "full" load.

I can't wait until little Brooke starts saying 'subearu' to us. It would be even better if it's her first word! We have a while before she starts talking though - she's only 3 mos old.

I would say that the 90/10 or 80/20 is about right on the automatic. An auto OB in the dirt: :-)

Yeah, but it'll be more like "soobawoo". I think it's every baby's first word, around the world. That's what they're trying to say, some parents just do not realize it. ;-)

My Forester's tires seem to be happy at 32psi. But it varies for different types of vehicle. On my Miata, anything more than 28psi causes a shimmy at speed and a rock-hard ride, with a skipping CD to remind me of it.

The Outback's higher profile tires can probably take 32psi nicely.

Cool pix. The fronts do seem to be putting up more dirt, but that may be because they bear more weight. By that point the AWD system has kicked into full effect, so we can't really conclude anything about the 80/20 split.

Anyone else notice in the new WRX ads, they actually mention Rally Bread? Dealers should serve it with cappuccinos while customers wait for service! ;-)

  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Yeah, there are actually a lot of variables there. Front tires turning, is that the beginning of the spin?, etc. Cool to see though. Maybe we can get some action shots in the Pine Barrens.

Speaking of ads.... don't know how long it's been out but I saw the Joe Isuzu Axiom vs. Grand Cherokee ad last night on TLC. As a general rule I don't like ads with Joe but that one was funny!

    -Frank P.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think the ads are funny.

Isuzu needs a spark. July sales were down so much that now the Forester outsells the entire Isuzu division.

before it becomes impractical to maintain the Isuzu brand in America? They already pulled all the Isuzu cars, if they don't turn it around there might be one less nameplate.

    Frank
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
That Isuzu will be General Isuzu sold at GMC dealers within 10 years. Isuzu is designing the next gen S10/S15 pickups, and the Pickup HD Duramax Diesel is actually an Isuzu designed engine. The next gen trooper will be a Yukon clone, and possibly the next gen rodeo will be an Envoy clone. Isuzu doesn't make cars anywhere anymore, although GM re-badges the Trooper world-wide as it's premier SUV (outside the US)

    -mike
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They have too many low volume vehicles. Only the Rodeo and Trooper sell in any significant volumes. The Axiom may get there once it gets up to speed.

I can't imagine they make money selling a few dozen VehiX models per month, or the Oasis, or the Hombre, for that matter.

    African or European? ;)
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Hombre hasn't been around since '99, as well as the Oasis.

The Trooper sells only 10K trucks a year.
VX sells 1.5k trucks a year and 01 is the last year.
The Rodeo is the meat and potatoes of their sales, although I expect the Axiom to pickup a lot of those sales if they could price it about $1k less.

I'm trying to access Edmunds as part of Team_Subaru on my lunch hours from work, but I'm having problems. I crashed my PC and lost my password. Can one of you please help me? You can reach me at pmickel@Subaru.com or my direct number is 856-488-3437. I sent an e-mail to the regular number, but I haven't gotten a response. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    am I jinxed?

    Okay - try again -

Illness - nasty and took some time, but it was an allergic reaction to some medicine - I'm groovy now.

Last week - hubby had some test (serious stuff but he's fine), headed to the shore for some planned vacation. - Actually - I go every weekend.

WRX - both so I can chat about it and share my opinions. If I understand them better I can "relate" the issues better. + I get older this weekend - I need to prove to myself I'm still young enough to have fun and experience new things.

Sept. 15 looks good right now. The trip to CA is off, but I'm trying to set up some things for our Edmunds friends around the U. S. - just working on the budgeting issue. You folks are valued, so I think it will work. I'm going to request good cars for our "get togethers".

Well, I think this is what I covered last post, so I hope this one takes.

    Patti

    P. S. - Couldn't get Subaru out of my babies - the best we could do with the '90 2.2 wagon??? Wubby Wocket!

    G'day

Thanks Brian for that. Looks like East LA to me.

And to answer Gus, yes, I am definitely around and read these pages most days. Frankly if you don;t there are so many posts that you rather lose the thread of it all.

    Cheers

paisan: I was referencing some sales figures. I guess those were left overs still being sold.

Isuzu relies too much on huge rebates. They should just price their trucks much lower to begin with. Rodeo should compete with XTerra and Liberty, not the mid-sizers the MSRP suggests it does.

Brian: I'm going to sue. You guys will recall my Folgers exhaust tip photo from over a year ago. Plus, mine was a better custom fit. The photo is here. Plus, Classic Roast yields 10 horses; Special Roast only about 8! ;-)

Mark - I run my tires @ 34 front/33 rear (Michelin MXV Energy) on the '98 OB and it is holding well (but you'll really feel the bumps). Took (Al' Gator) to the highways for the first time since... I bought it. No surprises running @ 34/33. Drove (speed: 70-90 mph) down to Long Beach Island on Monday and I averaged 24.5 mpg on Sunoco 94oct (I know, overkill). Yesterday, drove (speed: 60-70 mph) up to Montauk Point and it looks like I got better mileage at that range. Long Beach ~200miles on 1/2 tanks whereas Montauk ~220miles on 1/2 tank.

OT: My take on GPS. Bought me a Garmin Street Pilot III. Pretty good for a l'il thingamagic ($799); however, it does get stupid at some occassion (like "Right turn in 400ft" ???... but road bends left.). So far it has sent me into oncoming traffic.

Paisan - 15Sep01 is beginning to look like a pretty good/interesting experience (will be my first) and a possibility although schedule is pretty tight (in AZ for a conference until 14Sep01). Could you e-mail me details (how to get there and stuffs I'll need).
Do I need to mount old tires all around my OB?... ;-)
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Wow, Dave. The Parkway must've been empty.
The GSP troopers will be getting laser in about a month so watch out. ;-)

I'll have a link with details up sometime next week. And even more details after the pre-run the weekend before the event.

Thanks for the tip. But I doubt I'll be running at that speed range again (never say never). Guess it was the l'il devil in me, since it was my first long highway drive.

Will you be making it to TGI Friday this evening?

Ok, Looks like I'm meeting anyone from Queens/Brooklyn/SI under the overpass at the entrance to the Outerbridge Crossing in SI at 6pm. And we'll caravan over to NJ. If you want to meet us there, I'll be there at 6pm, cell # 917-596-3354

Had a few myself and heard of others. On a trip through GA I had a GPS and laptop, indicated I was really making good time about 7 miles parallel to the road I was on.

The worst I heard was that a couple in Germany relied a little too much on the Nav system in the BMW they rented. They didn't notice the difference in road color between the road and the ferry crossing. They went into the drink.

I have had some successes though. I took some shortcuts on some roads I never knew existed through places I would never have gone and saved some time. Real fun driving at night down unmarked roads in the South Carolina countryside.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
I just find the non-pc based ones don't have the door-to-door directions and information provided in my laptop version. I just need to make a mounting for my laptop :)

  • lark6lark6 Member Posts: 2,565
evilizard: I spent a good part of the years 1977-1988 getting lost on unmarked roads in the South Carolina countryside. North Carolina and Georgia, too, for that matter. I always try to get lost intentionally whenever I move to a new area so that I can learn backroads, shortcuts etc. Co-workers at one of my old jobs used to kid that I knew every small town south of Washington, DC.

I've never used a GPS though I bought one for someone as a gift once. I hope they're more accurate than Mapquest, which gave directions from my house once that had me going over a bridge that washed out in 1955.

    Ed
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
actually the Garmin Street Pilot III is pretty neat, and it does have Door-to-Door directions (unless the addy was up yesterday). Only pain I find about it right now is that to load up detailed city maps takes up to 2 hours (@ 9600 baud - default) depending on number of cities and size of memory card (I got the 64MB). I haven't found a good place to mount it yet. In the meantime, the cupholder seem to do just fine. Now, lets see if I can find the overpass. Hwy 440?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Yeah the one I had "rented" from comp USA didn't have a card with it, just didn't seem to have all the detail and speed of the PC. I actually have the whole US data stored on the HD, so I can watch DVDs and have the GPS running in the background and flip flop between the 2! :)
