Wish I had my Bean here!

I don't like the standard they set. I want them stopped before they're at every corner and measuring road speed as well. Human police officers already have too much power and in most jurisdictions are focused on revenue rather than public safety.
Eh, I'll cut the soapbox short. You all don't care to hear any ranting about civil liberties and bureaucracy creep.

Right on red is coming to SI next year, if Rudy has his way.

I'm absolutely against them as a source of revenue but am in favor of them if their sole purpose is safety. After all, one of the more frequent and dangerous types of accidents is the red light running speeder T-boning another vehicle. I also don't get the invasion of privacy argument. The cameras I remember in Europe were only triggered when a car entered the intersection after the light turned red (you knew when you were caught cause you'd spot the flash from the camera out of the corner of your eye). Assuming the US cameras work that way also, the only people getting their picture taken are the ones breaking the law (and endangering the rest of us). So what's the beef? Now if they start mounting VIDEO cameras at every intersection then I could see a valid concern. Also, in Europe, only a few intersections have a camera at any given time. The trick is that you never know which intersection will have one (I think they move them around every few weeks).

As for giving out traffic tickets, ANY traffic tickets, based on a piece of machinery and no human intervention, let's just say I'll have an easier time approving of it when the cameras go up in the policemens' lounges, offices, workout areas, and car interiors; cameras that are logged into the 'net 24x7.

And a mayoral proclamation can end it??? What about the traffic safety engineers? Have they no say in the matter?
I think if I lived in NYC, I'd feel like a foreigner!
Cheers!

Patti, c'mon, tell those boys to wise up!!! Do they realize they SELL 2 different AWD systems? What the $&#*@ kind of lame-o market-speak poll is this?
Sorry. Subaru has been about engineering. Subaru Crew Polls seem to be about freshman marketing.

TWRX: the shift mechanism in the Forester is the same as yours, just our shaft is longer. Don't worry, your secret is safe with us! ;-)
The Impreza's shaft is about an inch shorter. The STi shaft is the same length, though the portion below the fulcrum is longer to make the throw shorter, and it's not insulated like the stockie.
Short shifters like the Cobb and Kartboy are actually shorter in length by about 1", or 2" vs. the Forester. The catch is the boot sits kind of low.
Texans are very curteous drivers. I was amazed at how they'd move out of the way onto the shoulder. Incredible. Unheard of here in MD.
But you want crazy drivers? Try Brazil. It's like the Indy 500, with a drag race at every intersection. Anyone else notice Brazilians took 1st and 2nd at Indy this year? They practice on the street!
I'm opposed to red light cameras because they are a form of taxation without representation. Most offenders just timed the light badly.
If the goal is to get lousy drivers off the road, how about a driving test that actually requires skill to pass?

I was bummed to find that you could not drive on the beach in Rodanthe before Sept. 10. Last year we went later, so that was not an issue, but this year I could not get onto the sand in front of the house. Bummer, those beach chairs are heavy!
So we drove a few miles south to Salvo, still on the Hatteras Islands, and took one of the 4X4 trails up and over a dune onto the sand.
Sweet. Subaru AWD rocks! Aired down to 18psi (the sign recommended 20psi, but 18psi had worked for me last year in Rodanthe), and drove right up with no problems. The sand got soft and deep on the way to the beach, but I had enough momentum and we were so light that it was not an issue.
We had to drive over a small dune to reach the beach, so I kept Sandy moving steady and slow in 1st gear, and she ramped right up, impressing me all over again. The beach was sweet. Nice and deserted, on a stretch just south of Salvo (about 8 miles from the shark attack, though). She never even flinched, and made herself at home with the mostly full sized pickups.
The highlight had to be the stuck-in-the-sand Chevy Crew Cab. I'm talking a full sizer crew cab 4x4, with 245mm tires, stuck like it was quick sand. I stopped on some hard sand and walked up to help him out - turns out he had not aired down. Once we did, using my guage, we cleared the tires and he pulled right out. Boy was I chuckling to myself, though. Bet he never thought a Subaru owner would save his big 4x4!
The surf fishing was great! We caught flounder, yellow tail (the locals called it something else), and croaker (aka Hard Heads). About two dozen or so. BBQ'd them up that night, too. The croaker was good eatin', easily my favorite.
Don would be proud - I biked little Tati to sleep every day for her nap. Though I'd cover only a few miles before she'd fall asleep. We had some nice time to bond, though.
I had to double-check my math, but my mileage going down was an impressive 26.5mpg, and that included that day on the beach in Salvo! That plus I had the soft carrier on the roof. On the way home, we managed an even better 28.4mpg. Try that in a Chevy 4x4.
Subaru sightings galore. Saw a nice red Impreza TS wagon in Ocracoke, and an Outback that was positively flying on Rt. 12, passing everyone in sight even with a board on the roof!
We stayed in Rodanthe most of the time. Salvo one day, Ocracoke one day, that's it. The Ferry was fun and I got photos of that and Salvo coming soon. Stay tuned.

I sold the wife on the Ocracoke trip, but it took the full day. She loves the beach so much it was hard to even convince her to do that. So I'll have to save Carova for next year.
By the way, where is it? Near Corolla? That a couple of hours or so, so it'll also be a full day trip.

Welcome back! Glad to hear you had a good time. I was wondering if you would venture into the waters with the recent shark attacks. Wise choice to play it safe.
So you had to stop and help another 4x4, did ya? ;-) It's almost a cliche to find some over-confident truck stuck in sand and snow.
Any pics coming?
Ken
We're heading down to Okracoke the end of this month. We'll be making our way down to Writesville Beach area to see our daughter at college in Wilmington (UNCW). We decided to take the scenic route, via the Outer Banks, ferry to Ocracoke Island, then another ferry back to the mainland, then on down the coast to Writesville/Wilmington.
Bob
The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry is about 40 minutes and the view is gorgeous. Those were my best photos, actually. Take your time and enjoy the scenery!
I just complete my OBX 2001 photo album so check it out. I'll also put my favorites in the Photo Gallery topic.

I actually tried to dial in, but the phone line at the house is for local calls only, and poor quality to boot. I guess when you stay in a deserted area, those are the trade-offs.
I put a fresh coat of wax on Sandy just before leaving, and it paid off. I washed her when we got back and she looks great.
She needs a break! 41k miles now, and we're going to Sesame Place, with a one-day detour to Pine Barrens, this coming weekend.

RE: driving in other countries - A few years ago, I and my husband did a cruise with a stop in Jamaica. Being a former farm gal, I wanted tour a rum plantation. After leaving the ship, we were loaded into a small van. As soon as the door closed, our driver literally floored it off the curb in an attempt to squeeze between a truck and a bus. The space would maybe have allowed a bicycle through. The collective gasp from the passengers caught the driver's attention. Without taking his foot off the gas, he turned around and smiled, "No problem, mon."
The rest of the drive was the same. Driver dodging crazily between vehicles and passengers hyperventilating. The drive back was a bit more mellow for the passengers. After taste-testing several different kinds of rum, we were more relaxed, I guess.

Plus the views are unbeatable. I be pointing out all the different flora and she'd fall peacefully asleep in no time!
The bike went on the hitch rack, plus I had the Samsonite carrier on top. There were three of us, plus all that gear, so a 4th would squeeze us in a bit (no, she's not pregnant yet). Over 28mpg ain't bad considering the king of load Sandy was hauling, no?
Given I don't like big cars, I think eventually I'll just get a 5'x8' trailer and put all my stuff, including the bike, in there.

Anyway, glad you were shark-free. I was concerned when I was listening to the news along with the rest of the crew.

I didn't like the flounder. Maybe it was because we grilled them. They flaked apart and were hardly worth the effort to eat.
I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Now a plane has hit the Pentagon?!?!?!
paisan is in or near the WTC, IIRC. Pray for everyone.
Dennis
There are no more twin towers. They both collapsed.
Dennis
anyway yes it's bad. initial reports are that up to 7 planes were hijacked. one hit each twin tower, one hit the pentagon (on the outer edge, really), one was purportedly shot down by the Air Force near Pittsburgh while trying to get to DC.
and at least one car bomb has been detonated.
