Hmm, this might also be a remote control issue. Have you tried using your other spare key to check for this issue?

I just bought a new 09 civic LX and i am wanting to spend some money on it by adding items to try and make it a little more peppy. So what can i do with my car but yet not losing amuch MPGs?

replace your stock air filter with K&N filter. it costs about 50-55 bucks.

The $16,564 is okay. You might be able to get it down to $16,100. But don't pay extra for the protection package. If you hold out long enough, a dealer will sell you the car without paying extra for this. The mud guards are only $79 and trunk tray is $104 if you buy it yourself, wheel locks are like $49.

Extended warranty not required. I would just take my chances. I still have a 2003 civic LX that I bought brand new. It has about 220,000 miles now and the only thing I have had to change was the alternator two months ago. Other than that, just oil changes and tires.

Finally fixed! Took four visits to the service department.
First visit was to explain to multiple people the problem and then they understood.
They had to call Honda in California, who told them to first replace the door actuator (or something), then the alarm control module.
That took two more days to get parts and install one, test, install other, test, still no fix.
Then Honda told them to remove the door panel, follow all the wiring.
That fixed it - something about an incorrect ground at a connection inside the door panel.

It is working fine now - so the correct behavior is that once remote is used to unlock the front drivers door, and the door is opened and closed, at this time the alarm should be completely disabled. Now I can spend as much time as need to clear the snow off the car :-)

anyone else experience any funky things happen with ignition? I have an intermitent problem. WHen i go to start the car every once in a while it wont turn over and all lights come on but it doesnt crank. Then I shut off and try again and it starts fine. Brought to dealer they cannot duplicate.. Has happen ti hubby with his ket as well..
Then I have also had three times that I tried to start and it cranks and cranks and wont stsrt. Then i shut off..swear.. then ttry again and it cranks hard then starts.... aggghh.. anyone else have issues???
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
Have you put the key in, turn to the on position, wait til the lights come on in the instrument, then start the car? I bet it starts fine then. Try that and let us know.

Im thinking what you're doing is putting the key and going directly to start the car. Honda's don't work that way, you have to first let the fuel pump prime itself then it'll start fine.Typical honda. nothing wrong with it.

Never have had to do that with our family's 2007 Civic EX, or any of our dozen and a half Hondas in the last 20 years, either. Take it to the dealer, it should be under warranty.

Still can't get the locks to automatically lock and unlock even though I've done all the steps in the manual. I really like this feature, my kids Versa has it, and I want it also. I've tried to do it like 40 times now with no luck. Even though I have a ;06 Civic, I assume the procedure should be the same. Could anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

    TIA folks.

I just purchased a EX-L 2009 and the automatic lock and unlock feature was already activated when I picked it up, I would call your dealer and set up an appointment to have it done, apparently they forgot or don`t do it unless requested.

so i guess you get the lucky prize for being one of many who haven't had this, but don't portray what I've said as not normal. because many honda's have done that. And it IS NORMAL. The fuel pump has to pressurize the fuel system. Why should the other poster have to waste their time with a dealer who will find nothing?! When a simple procedure will show the car will start everytime.

Take it to the dealer is a cheap way out, especially when most dealers have a tough time diagnosing simple issues. I sure hope the original poster will try my simple procedure instead of what you've said.

lol.. i wasn't getting hostile, guess that was my attempt at sarcasm :) you know like me giving you a lucky prize for being special for not having that typical honda issue. oops.. guess that didn't come across as funny, okay i'll keep my day job! :shades:

My 09 EX has been experiencing the same thing intermittently and I took it into the dealer and had them check the battery, starter and alternator. All came back good, but at least now I have it on record that this problem exists just in case it turns out to be something major when the car is no longer under warranty. Of course my dealer couldn't replicate the problem either.

My 09 LX-S has this exact problem with hard starts (not starting at times, then starting on the second try). I've done the whole "priming" procedure described above, and it actually seems to alleviate the problem. But in 2009, why should a modern car need to have this procedure done in order to start the car after it's been sitting for a while? Is this procedure described anywhere in the owner's manual?

I've driven a Corolla, Camry, Eclipse, F-150, Ranger, CLK 430, and X5 over the years, and not one of them ever had starting issues unless the battery was shot...

I went to AboutAutomobile.com under the Consumer Complaint section, and found a lot of people having problem of excessive rear tires wear out caused by "rear fixed upper control arms"(they wear out in 10K miles range, faster than front tires). It's not only applied to this generation of Civic, but also for Accord, does anyone know whether Honda has fixed this issue for 2009 model? Thanks.

I test drove an 08 Civic a while back and found the E brake very annoying. It would dig into my leg the way I drive. I ended up getting an 09 Corolla instead strictly due to that fact. I am now in the market for another and don't have access until December to test drive, but from the pictures online of the interior of the 09, it looks like the ebrake has the console surrounding it which I think is different than it was in 08 and might solve this problem.
Can anyone verify this change in the 09 model or is it the same?
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
All you need to do is check the Honda website; judging by the pictures, the parking brake handle design is unchanged.

Does anybody here know anything about the new 2010 civic? Is it has the new body? Thanks.
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
Honda is currently refreshing their passenger cars every five years, so the Civic is not scheduled to receive a major redesign until 2011. If you remember, it just got updated for the mid-life change for 2009, and this style will continue for at least another year.

Mine's an 09 ex auto cpe, no nav, and it did the start on the second time thing a few times when i first got it. This problem stopped once i got through the tankful of rotgut swill gasoline that came with the car; a fill up at the shell station and none of that mis-behavior since. Really, it was no doubt winterized gas and now it's lots warmer, that may be a factor. As it's been a few weeks since your posting, what's the status now?

Meantime, i'm having a hard time finding things to be critical of with this car; it's a peach. fyi:
    - wimpy exhaust note ( I don't favor noise, it's just that this sound is, well...)
    - audio knobs have a slick surface
    - no lumbar adjuster
    - no auto-on headlights, just like my chevy has; i miss this most of all
    - the wipers are way cool but i wonder what the refills will cost
    - the trunk (is it a latch?) protrudes down and i bonk my forehead when reaching in there sometimes

Just use the ones on the steering wheel. :)

I miss the days when all Hondas were on 4-year cycles. They got a mid-life refresh after two years and full redesign after four years. You could set your watch (er, calendar) by it! :P

It still has issues starting if it's been sitting for more than a few hours (and I don't do the "priming" procedure discussed previously). I was hoping it was just the gas, but it does not appear to be the case at all. By the way, I always fill up with Tier 1 gasoline.

It just might be the main fuel relay as mentioned in another thread.

Will the OEM XM radio package work with the LX-S radio? I like the integrated XM better and don't think it will be a big deal to install it myself.

I bought my Civic EX-L this afternoon. I didn't notice the brake handle earlier, but I sure did later in the evening as I drove through town. That handle hits the outside of my right knee smack dab on the bone which makes for an extremely annoying and sore ride.

My solution (and I don't know if this is going to work) is to take one of those neoprene rubber beer can holders, cut out the bottom and wrap the sides around the hand grip then secure it with some neatly wrapped black electrical tape. It may not look as cool as factory, but I think it might just solve the problem. I'll return to this site and let you know what happened.

When I test drove the Civic back in '06, the parking brake handle design/location was one of the first things I noticed! I'm tall (6'2") and long-legged (34" inseam), so my right leg naturally hits the center console. As I got into the car, I managed to hit my knee/thigh on the handle. During the test drive, I noticed that some part of my leg was in constant contact with it. That was one of the very few things I didn't like about the car.

A friend of mine just bought an '07 Lexus IS 250. I was surprised to see that it has a foot-pedal operated parking brake (like most older domestic cars). I think Toyota uses these on the Camry and Avalon, too. It opens up space on the center console or allows the console to be smaller (and out of the way of us long-legged folks).

Do hand-operated parking brakes really make sense anymore?

If your resourceful solution doesn't solve the issue, check out some Honda and/or Civic-specifc enthusiast forums (just Google "Honda Civic forum"). I'm sure there is an aftermarket solution of some sort available by now!

Anyway, congrats on the new car! I currently have a Mazda3, but I've had several Civics (and Accords) in the past and loved every one of 'em!

Drive a stick shift in a hilly area... then you'll learn to like the hand-brakes. Vehicles like IS250 and Avalon don't offer a manual, so its no biggie.
  • igozoomzoomigozoomzoom Member Posts: 801
I've been driving cars with manual transmissions (never owned an automatic) for 18 years...in the mountains of North Georgia. :) When I was learning to drive, I was coordinated enough to use the hand brake "hill holding" method. I learned quickly how to start off on hills without rolling back! But I have known other drivers who prefer the hand brake.

By the way, the IS 250 is actually the ONLY Lexus that you can get with a manual (a 6-speed). But after you made that comment, I started wondering if the IS250 6MT had a hand brake. I found a review of it with photos and, sure enough, the manual transmission model has a different center console with a hand brake!

Well, I'm a daily automatic driver (Accord), but occasionally use my grandfather's 2.4L Frontier with the 5-speed. I learned how to drive a stick years ago using that truck, but still like having the pull-out hand brake "just in case" I don't read the clutch right on a hill.

I didn't realize you could get the 250 with a manual. I'm thinking of the 350 I suppose, with the big ol' 3.5L V6. No row-your-own option there. Thanks for the correction.

Now, back to... Civics, yeah... Civics. :) Sorry for leading us astray from the topic, host!

Has anyone noticed that their calipers are extremely rusted on their Honda Civic?
I just purchased my car in late October and my calipers are excessively rusted. They tell me this is normal at the dealers. It makes the car look 5 years old.
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
According to what? The Civic has been on a 5-year cycle since 1996, meaning that 2011 would bring a totally new model.
  • rv65rv65 Member Posts: 1,076
Nope thats what Best Car Magazine in Japan says. I think it's likely due to the Economy. Honda will bring out several different civics according to the markets. I hear the Hybrid will be a unique model.

Does the vehicle stability assist (VSA) and traction control on the 2009 Civic provide noticeably better traction on snow or wet roads under normal driving conditions?
  • sinsdsinsd Member Posts: 46
    Didnt know there was one
  • sierragranitesierragranite Member Posts: 3
It's standard on the EX-L sedan. Don't know if it's worth the money since you have to get leather to get the VSA.

No new civic model for 2010 nor 2011......

"Civic As the current body style debuted in the 2006 model year, the Civic received its MMC last year. In other words, minimal changes are expected for 2010. For those who are counting on the Civic getting an FMC next year, think again. The Civic has generally been on a 5-year model cycle, which means the FMC (full model change) would normally be expected for the 2011 model year, but we have heard through several sources that the 8th generation Civic's model cycle has been stretched a year and the introduction of the 9th generation Civic has been pushed back to the 2012 model year. The good news is, this gives Honda another year to consider bringing the brilliant Japanese-spec Civic Type R over, but will they? Sadly, the answer is likely "no".
Summary: Few changes until 2012 FMC.
Watch For: 6-year cycle for 8th generation Civic. Also watch for people expiring due to prolonged holding of breath waiting for a proper Civic Type R to make its way to our shores.
    Available: August/September"

I recently bought a 2009 HOnda civic LX. The vin number on the vehicle starts as 19XFA......
My insurance agent says the VIN numbers of all
hondas should have a H in the second space.
Should i be concerned? I left a message with my dealer.
    I will appreciate any resposne.

    Thanks

I'd simply look at some other civics and see if they are like yours, or have H in that position.

My 2009 Civic makes a quiet knocking noise, its very fast and quiet and only is heard if the car is going above 55, and you take your foot off the accelerator and back on. Anyone have any suggestions to whether this is an issue?
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
sounds like spark knock. Have you gotten gas from a different station recently? like your last fill up? Sounds like the fuel is watered down and you're not getting the correct octane (87). Try getting gas at another station (a high-volume station) and it should go away.
  • toofast2toofast2 Member Posts: 3
I normally get 89 Regular from Lukoil or Shell. I guess I'll talk to a dealer. Thanks.
