Well, working from memory, it was definitely the GLS that received the bulk of the changes. It appears that this move was intended to keep the base MSRP down, while better focusing on desirable equipment combinations, and also giving customers a little more leeway on how they wish their vehicles to be equipped. Most of what's different from previous listings are more details (e.g. how many speakers there are) rather than all-out modifications.
Here are the ones I caught--
On GLS: the leather-wrapped steering wheel & shift knob, automatic on/off headlamps, trip computer, rear cargo screen, and a rear cargo net were switched from the standard listing to the Premium Package (of which, most units will have). Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls were previously only available on the SE and LIMITED.
The Touring Package was added (albeit without the automatic-leveling rear suspension), in which front fog lights are now available.
On SE:
The power driver's seat with power lumbar support has been switched from standard on the SE to available as a part of the Premium Package, and HomeLink® integrated transceiver is now available as a part of the Premium Package. Features that were switched from standard equipment to available equipment on the GLS, remain standard on the SE.
On LIMITED:
No notable changes. The power driver's seat with power lumbar support, now optional on the SE, has remained standard on the LIMITED.
No. 2007 model year. The new SF will receive the new 3.3, same as it is in the Sonata V6. Likely the fuel economy will be similar, maybe a little less but not by much
Does the new Sonata's have 3.3 or 3.5? I have a family member with a 2006 Sonata thought it was a 3.5L. She's getting about 21 mpg combo it was estimated at 30 hwy & 20 city.
I would think it a stretch to hope for that out of the Santa Fe. Maybe 18 or 19 combo which would still be better than our 3.8L Dodge Caravan at about 16.5 mpg combo.
Well, Hyundai typically comes out with a press release giving all the details of the vehicle shortly before it starts selling, so that will have your curb weights and EPA fuel economy and a lot more.
Just as an aside, while the Sonata will share its Lambda V6 with the new Santa Fe, the engine will be tuned a bit differently in that application. I personally would expect fuel economy to be at least 2 or 3 mpg less than the Sonata due to a greater coefficient of drag and increased weight.
How come the standard V6 only makes 185hp and 183lb of torque. Is this as disappointing to anyone else? As I remember you can't get the 3.3 on every model. In a vehicle this heavy, 185 hp is going to move like a Fedex truck.
Well, it shouldn't be much heavier than, say, a 155-hp Highlander I4, so I personally don't think it'll be that big of a deal. More interesting to many people is that a manual transmission is standard with the 2.7L V6. The majority of buyers will, however, select the 242-hp 3.3L.
Very competitive numbers on the fuel economy - good stuff
In my opinion, Hyundai is positioning the Santa Fe the same way as is on the Sonata - a fuel efficient base engine and a more-than-adequate optional V6 (both 3.3 on Santa Fe and Sonata). I was hoping 3.3 and 3.8 on the Santa Fe but after hearing the more upscale "EN" is in the plans and just around the corner (likely standard 3.8 V6 and optional 4.6 V8 - both new), it made more sense the way the lineup has been configured this way:
Sonata - Santa Fe Azera - "EN"
By the way, do we have a thread on the "EN"? I've seen a lot of new spy shots of the "EN" lately...
See to me in the car world, every car is only as good as its competition. If Ford had the Fusion back in 1994, everyone else would have been forced out of business. Now it is competitive but not a landslide winner.
The Rav has 268hp, the Edge has 250+, the CX-7 has 240, the the Highlander will have at least 268hp, it seems like the optional V6 won't be as powerful as other makers. And America loves speed. Additionally, the Pontiac Torrent has been hammered because it is supposed too heavy for its 185hp engine. What is the difference here? I think the Hyundai will weight more than the Torrent. I have driven an Equinox (same as the Torrent) and trust me all the complaints are well deserved. That poor truck is comparible to an old mule that seems like it just might pass out. Almost like you should feel sorry for giving it the gas.
while ok, is not even close to the Rav4. The best the Santa Fe can do (2wd/2.7 l) is 26hwy or about 32mi/per imperial gallon while the Rav4 4 cyl AWD auto gets 37 mi.per imp.gal hwy and the V6 AWD auto gets 36. Best city mileage of 21 (26 imp) is less than the 4cyl Rav's 28 and about the same as the Rav's larger V6.
That is true, but the Santa Fe is a more substantial vehicle. I have no doubt that the RAV4 will be the more popular of the two, but many people will be willing to pass up a few MPGs for the extra space and perhaps even the styling (the Hyundai strikes me as the most "mature" or "masculine-looking" of the two).
Diesel = high torque, and high MPGs. If Hyundai can meet the Tier 2 Bin 5 emission standards they could get a giant leap on the competition. From a marketing standpoint there would be no competition. A Santa Fe diesel would stand alone in the mid size SUV category.
I totally agree with you there. Can you imagine: a midsize crossover with good looks, a very reasonable price, compact car-like fuel economy, and a quiet and powerful diesel engine? If they want to take the class by storm, I think that's a very savvy way to do it. VW sells plenty of diesel-powered cars in the US -- what would stop people from flocking to Hyundai lots for a well-rounded, diesel-powered 7-passenger SUV?
OK...let's take this a bit further. How about a turbocharged diesel-electric hybrid with plug-in option? Isn't it VW that's already playing around with turbo D-E? That would attract a different kind of clientele, wouldn't it? I'd definitely go for a high horsepower/high torque/high MPG mid-size SUV. For that matter, why not throw in some solar panels on the roof behind the moonroof (or even integrated into the moonroof glass) to help recharge the batteries when the vehicle is off, or to power an inverter for AC devices, or to power fans to keep the interior cooler when parked on hot days? With a platform as large as the new Santa Fe, all it takes is some imagination.
puts out 201 HP, but a whopping 369 ft-lbs of torque, so it accelerates from 0-60 in about 7 seconds...I believe that includes a turbocharger...also gets 27 city, 37 hwy..
Maybe without the turbo, Hyundai could put out 300 tork and still make the Santa Fe fly, maybe get 25 city, 30 hwy...
It's interesting that the mileage figures for the 5-spd auto 3.3 AWD match the 06 Tucson figures for the 2.7 AWD auto. While that's commendable for the larger vehicle, it tells me that the Tucson has a long way to go to improve its own mpg figures. I can't wait to see what the 07 Tucson has in store for fuel efficiency. I imagine Hyundai would want to seriously look at weight savings next time around as well as entirely new powerplants (like the aforementioned turbo D/E hybrid).

Another upcoming competitor is the Mazda CX-9. (Although I was a bit surprised to see that the vehicle has a less spacious 3rd-row seat, as I was expecting something more along the lines of the "EN." Cargo space seems larger, however.)
Does anyone know if the new Santa Fe will have a powered liftgate? I think it would be a very nice feature to have. I hope it's got XM radio also. I'm getting very excited about the release.
Hi, I am in the Middle East as well and just looked at a new Santa Fe. Currently they don't have a test drive car and I was wondering what your impressions of the power of the 2.7L was? Thanks!
from what i heard first hyundai model with xm radio is going to be the new elantra amd then the other models will get xm radio so santa fe should have it by 2007
It is very nice. I think it is the best overall. It is right in the middle. Styling wise, the front works real well. The side and the back aren't as nicely executed. The interior is also very very nice. It has some cheap pieces and the look isn't as upscale as in the photos but it is better than over half the car based on the market right now. To put it in perspective, the Rav4's interior is definitely higher quality but it blows the doors off an Equinox or Torrent or Escape or CRV, or Dodge Nitro (horrible interior, absolutely horrible in person).
For my money, the Hyundai balances everything the best. I'll take a Mazda CX-7 over it but that is a personal preference. THe Mazda is more sporting and looks absolutely gorgeous. The interior is on par with any VW and looks like they stole an Audi guy. I'd put the CX-7 above the Acura RDX (horrible execution, horrible)
Personally I thought the RAV4's interior looked kind of cheap. But I spent most of my time in the lower-end models; maybe the loaded models have a nicer interior. The main problem with the Santa Fe, and also the RAV4, is that the rear seat is pretty useless except for small children. If you need to tote seven people, get a minivan.

Yeah, that is interesting. It's sort of a European thing to do, really.
