This segmend is seeing some serious compeition and I love it. All the vehicles look great. I was considering the Sante Fe, but I think I have been stolen away by the Ford Edge. I like the in your face styling, the 250 hp engine, the panaramic roof, and other things about it. What sold me most is the styling. I also like the Mazda CX-7 (smaller I know, real sporty. Everything seems so close, with a few advantages going here, and a few going there. The Ford, I am guessing, will come in around the $21K range. The Mazda starts at $23K and the Ford is usually less than the Mazda version. Since the Ford is bigger it may go to $25K. Either way, I hope the Sante Fe is competitive with that. I think there is room in the market for everyone to have a nice slice of the pie.
The hyundai does not have rear seat heating vents?????? What is going on with that? That was one of my top features that I wanted. I am tired of having to put the heat on blast because people in the back are cold. Remember we are talking about small kids sometimes where we can't tell them to stop whining. I had thought that they would be there and taken it as a given but I don't see them in the pics. Bad move Hyundai.
It is a very popular color (I saw more silver cars than anything else in Seoul) and also one that is available across their entire lineup, so it helps for consistency. Note that in the back of the Hyundai brochures, when they line up all the models, they are always silver.

Why oh why did Hyundai put this gaudy looking wood trim along the front dash in an otherwise nice looking interior. It’s so passé. Wonder if it's paintable?

The new Santa Fe in Korea (2007 model in the USA & Canada) and Kia Optima (the Korean brand is Kia Lotze) have a PTTR (Pull To The Right) symptom, according to the Korean national broadcasting company (KBS).
You don't need to understand Korean at all. Just have a look at the video clip. It's horrible.
Hyundai Korea has not yet found the reason and solution.
Some customers got wheel alignment and adjusted tire pressure. Still they have PTTR.
PTTR was also reported on the Honad CR-V forum of Edumunds.com
I also wanna know. In Korea, Hyundai raised $3,800 (minimum) - $6,500 (maximum). I'm not joking. If they do so in the States, they're doomed. Maybe $1,000 - $2,000 more? If more than that, I won't definitely buy one.
Hyundai won't announce the official prices until later this spring/summer, but they have said that the starting MSRP will be more than the RAV4, less than the Highlander -- averaging around $3,000 less expensive than the latter. So with that and feature dispersion in mind, my current loose guestimates are-
The current range is $21,695-$25,895 for the Santa Fe, $20,300-$25,870 for the RAV4, and $24,530-$31,860 for the non-hybrid Highlander (all prices listed in this post are intended as USD MSRPs before options and freight & handling).
If I am not mistaken, the RAV4 has an automatic standard and starts at about $20k. That is with the 4-banger of course, but the power difference is not that big. I don't see Hyundai being successful selling the new Santa Fe for over $3000 more than the RAV4, even if the Santa Fe has a few extra little touches above the RAV4 at that price. For that kind of pricing, I would look really hard at the RAV4 no matter how great the Santa Fe is. Is Hyundai getting away with their value pricing approach that has served them so well over the past 5-6 years?
I don't see Hyundai abandoning their value pricing model anytime soon. However I don't see them living on price alone. The new redesigned Santa Fe, along with Azera, Tucson and Sonata paves the way towards shifting their existing model to where quality will eventually become the focal point of their products.
Quality products equal a premium price which is what you pay for a Toyota or Honda. Hyundai is not there yet in the minds of the average consumer but they're certainly following that path. Until then Hyundai will position the Santa Fe to be as price/value/quality comeptitive against RAV4, Highlander, upcoming re-designed CRV,Pilot etc.
Hyundai is not there yet in the minds of the average consumer...
That is exactly my point. The Sonata is priced significantly below Accord and Camry, yet Hyundai has needed to resort to big rebates to move them off dealer lots. So I wonder how well the new Sanata Fe will move if it is priced evey higher than the new RAV4.
But then, I haven't driven either of them yet, so maybe the Santa Fe will stand out so much against the RAV4 that the price difference won't be a factor.
I think that the Santa Fe's stronger selling points over the RAV4 will be more standard safety features, larger interior space, and the fact that it's a comparable value (it would actually cost a consumer over $23K to analogously equip the 4-cylinder Toyota to the GLS automatic level). The Hyundai's also styled a bit more "maturely," IMO, and should appeal to a number of potential buyers. The RAV4's appeal will mostly be centered on the available V6 and its more established reputation for sustained, better than average reliability. Either way, though, both seem to be great vehicles in their own rights and each are well worth serious consideration whatever the purchase outcome.
I have heard from many sources now on the internet that the new Sante Fe offers quality and amenities near the Azera level and that it will be used by Hyundai to push them a little more up market and upscale. At $21,695 currently, I think a price increase of 1.3K isn't unheard of. That would put us at $23K starting. Still not bad
I think auto makers don't know how to price these SUV's because consumer demand is so different and strong. Look at a Murano. Small but starting in the $26K and climbing easily into $30K for NO APPARANT reason. Look at the Rav4, it is priced and positioned to go against a Highlander in many respects. What more features can a Highlander offer? If all there is between them is size, than how big can a Highlander really get? Also look at teh Ford Edge. Ford doesn't know where to start the pricing. I'll tell you one thing, if they start it at $24K I'll take one, sight unseen before they catch on that that is s steal. The New Mazda CX-7 starts at $23K and has some serious performance. This segment got real crowded and real confusing very fast. In the end we could see a Sante Fe that while being pricing compeitively (in line with others) is NOT the value leader. Scared I am. Scared we all must be.
"That is exactly my point. The Sonata is priced significantly below Accord and Camry, yet Hyundai has needed to resort to big rebates to move them off dealer lots." - backy
backy that is why the reference to "Hyundai is not there yet in the minds of the average consumer". This fact is borne out in a J.D. Power 2003 survey. However the survey did go on to say that that perception is changing.
As to the generous incentives that Hyundai has used to move Sonatas? Granted they have used rebate strategy to stimulate some sales but these are not out of line. However, I do see lower incentives coming if sales are sustainable at current levels. At the moment there is a $500/1,000 (depending on Sonata model) and $1,000 HMFC rebate. This is in line with their target.
The newly re-designed Camry, scheduled to be introduced very shortly may have to resort to rebates depending on how close Sonata sales move above 21k. It wouldn't surprise me to see Hyundai begin to offer their new interior colors, rear park assist, Active Geometry Control Suspension in both their Azera and Sonata model very soon.
Hyundai is making significant strides in the U.S. market. their growing market share has been increasing, reflected by their gains in year of year sales.
HIDs are available on the home-market, but will not initially be in the US or Canada (apparently it's the same situation with rain-sensing wipers, IMS, and power-adjustable pedals; if HIDs do show up, I'd also expect the headlamp washer jets to as well). They may come later -- perhaps for the '07.5 or '08 model year. The larger CUV ("EN," based on a stretched Santa Fe platform) will very likely have them at launch.
2) The Korean Santa Fe owners with PTTR are making organized protests and filing formal complaints.
3) But, only a few have PTTR like Honda CR-V.
4) And this is very interesting. Hyundai Korea is USING their home market as its BEST beta test field. If something's wrong with the 2006 Korean Santa Fe, they'll fix it and produce better 2007 Santa Fes for North America. So, Korean Santa Fe owners with PTTR are involuntary test drivers paying for the full vehicle price.
Because of Hyundai-Kia's (Hyundai bought Kia a few years ago ) near-monopolistic status (around 70% of the market share) and the weak competition from imported brands (they usually import high-end cars like Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes) in Korea, Hyundai usually do whatever they want.
The prices of the Accent and the Elantra (Avante in Korea) are similar to those in USA. But those of the Sonata, the Santa Fe, and the Azera (Grandeur in Korea) are BLOATED in Korean, around more than 20%.
Does anybody know the approx. mpg. estimate. And if the back window still flips up like on the older models. This is one feature that I want. I passed on the rav4 because of this. It's a lot easier to carry long items with the window up then having the hassle of using the roof rack. I have a crv. now Toyota still does not understand this feature.
"Does anybody know the approx. mpg. estimate." Hyundai hasn't posted any estimates thus far, but here are some guesses that I made a while back:
2.7L FWD, city/highway = 20/28
2.7L AWD, city/highway = 20/27
3.3L FWD, city/highway = 19/28
3.3L AWD, city/highway = 18/26
At this point, I have no way of verifying what the actual numbers are.
"And if the back window still flips up like on the older models." Yes, they maintained the two-way liftgate design with the separate-opening glass hatch.
"Hey mike, how do u kno that they left it as a dual action tailgate? like with the flip up glass?
From the pics of the 2007 i dont see the little handle that the 2006 model has on the glass."
Well, I looked into it further and have come to the conclusion that my initial information was wrong: the liftgate does indeed appear to be a single unit. I apologize to all for the apparent misinformation.
Well, the current CR-V is a great vehicle and I'm sure the all-new '07 model will be even better. I'll definitely let you know if I find out that the production USDM Santa Fe will actually have a two-way liftgate (it seems very peculiar that they would cease to offer it). Either way, good luck with whatever you end-up purchasing.
You're quite kind with your response. Imagine passing up a Santa Fe for a CR-V because of a flip-up rear window! And the CR-V has its rear door hinged on the wrong side for the American market! Whatever trips your trigger, I guess :confuse:
I know the left-hand 3rd-row seating position has at least one, but I'm not sure about the right. I think the DVD-changer location gets in the way on models with the Ultimate Touring Package, but I'll search it out to be sure.
this before, so forgive my aging worthless memory, but I am considering/comparing the 2006 Explorer (with floor shifter) to this upcoming Santa Fe...how does the Santa Fe compare in terms of overall size (length, width, cargo)?
I find the current Tucson much smaller than the Explorer, but the new Santa Fe will be larger than the current Santa Fe and the Tucson...
Will I be sacrificng much space in the 07 Santa Fe???
Well, you did ask, but it was a while back when info was limited. The Explorer is definitely a larger vehicle overall, but the Santa Fe holds its own well enough as I see it. In fact, the only significant advantages of the Ford are 3rd-row headroom, 3rd-row legroom, and cargo space -- the upcoming "EN" SUV from Hyundai will be a more direct competitor to the Explorer. Being rather trucklike, the Ford likely tows and hauls more (I don't have numbers on the Hyundai, but you can bet on it). On the other hand, there's a consequence to its trucky nature: fuel economy is much worse than the Santa Fe.
Here are some specs for ya:

And once again, Hyundai is pushing the "Pedestrian Silver" exterior color.
Silver is the worst kind of bourgeois.
Silver started in 2000 and is now tiresome.

Mike
Hopefully its not
Looking forward to its debut
I've talked with some Korean car fans:
1) PTTR is REAL.
These problems are also happening to the new Kia Lotze (Optima in North America).

This is definitely one of my favorite colors for this vehicle.

This is one feature that I want.
I passed on the rav4 because of this. It's a lot easier
to carry long items with the window up then having the hassle of using the roof rack. I have a crv. now
Toyota still does not understand this feature.
Hyundai hasn't posted any estimates thus far, but here are some guesses that I made a while back:
2.7L FWD,
city/highway = 20/28
2.7L AWD,
city/highway = 20/27
3.3L FWD,
city/highway = 19/28
3.3L AWD,
city/highway = 18/26
At this point, I have no way of verifying what the actual numbers are.
"And if the back window still flips up like on the older models."
Yes, they maintained the two-way liftgate design with the separate-opening glass hatch.
Mike
From the pics of the 2007 i dont see the little handle that the 2006 model has on the glass.
any more interior pics anywhere????
From the pics of the 2007 i dont see the little handle that the 2006 model has on the glass."
Well, I looked into it further and have come to the conclusion that my initial information was wrong: the liftgate does indeed appear to be a single unit.
I apologize to all for the apparent misinformation.

Either way, good luck with whatever you end-up purchasing.
Mike
You're quite kind with your response. Imagine passing up a Santa Fe for a CR-V because of a flip-up rear window! And the CR-V has its rear door hinged on the wrong side for the American market! Whatever trips your trigger, I guess :confuse:
LOL - I guess so!
Mike
Looks great. As a family of 5, this might sway us to jump from mini van to mini SUV.
We almost feel like we've been in it.
What about 3rd row cup holders????
I know the left-hand 3rd-row seating position has at least one, but I'm not sure about the right. I think the DVD-changer location gets in the way on models with the Ultimate Touring Package, but I'll search it out to be sure.
Mike
I find the current Tucson much smaller than the Explorer, but the new Santa Fe will be larger than the current Santa Fe and the Tucson...
Will I be sacrificng much space in the 07 Santa Fe???
Thanks.
Being rather trucklike, the Ford likely tows and hauls more (I don't have numbers on the Hyundai, but you can bet on it). On the other hand, there's a consequence to its trucky nature: fuel economy is much worse than the Santa Fe.

Not to change this topic, but what do we know about this "EN" series that you just mentioned...is there another thread that I can go to, or are you just teasing us with information???
