    The "me too...me too!" mentality is boring to me. Bandwagon thinking never appealed to me.

    If best-selling equals best, I guess "Disco Duck" is a better record than any number of concurrent tunes.

    Typical. When the home team ain't on top, all of a sudden everything changes. Ha! "Disco Duck" reminds me of the Chevy Cobalt!

    The "Me Too, Me Too" only happens when a car is desirable AND a good deal....oh, and doesn't break down!

    I did see a 2013 'Bu yesterday and it's far more appealing than the photos.

    "Mine's bigger than yours"! Sheesh.

    I don't believe I'd even consider a '13 Malibu. Nice-looking, but too tight in the back seat.

    Unless I missed it (definitely a possibility), haven't seen this very large Toyota and Lexus recall mentioned here:

    http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1078210_toyota-recalling-2006-2011-rav4-201- 0-lexus-hs-250h-for-rear-suspension-failure

    While I am certain some will say, 'that doesn't belong here', discussions about any other aspect of competing cars show up here, so recalls should as well.

    Circle, have you ever even sat in a Cobalt, yet drive one for even a city block? Serious question.

    So a much newer "best" design outsold an aging design (I assume those are 2012 models as I've only seen one 13 Malibu, a demo) by a hated company, by less than 10%? Not a very clear victory there.

    Does the 2013 Malibu have hard plastic on the front seatbacks? The plastic on the seatbacks of the 2008-2012 was one of my biggest complaints. Even though it had that hollowed-out area for your knees, it was too low for me, so I couldn't fit comfortably.

    If I were shopping for a car, I think I'd at least check out the Malibu,although I'd wait for the 2.5, instead of messing around with the Eco stuff.
  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,873
    I'm not sure about the seatbacks on the '13 Malibu, Andre. I'll have to check when I'm at the dealer for an oil change Sat.

    I'm a short guy with short legs, but to me, the back seat of our '11 Malibu seems cavernous! I know you're a tall guy.

    I saw that headline a few days ago and was wondering when I would see it posted in the GM forum.....

    Things are just so predictable around here!

    Yep, only GM's recalls matter at all! LOL

    Anything else about any other manufacturer is OK to post here.

    Heck, one (in)famous poster repeatedly was bringing up 1971 GM recalls when we were discussing current Toyota recalls!

    Yep, certainly is predictable around here.

    Understatement of the week!

    Just like my aunt used to say about daily soap operas, you can miss 3 months of shows, then start watching again... and realize you've missed...nothing.

    LOL!

    On another note, it seems that the new Malibu is not a raging hit. Too bad, as family sized sedans are a huge part of the market. GM really needs to get competitive in areas of the market other than big trucks and SUVs, as the next recession or gas spike won't be kind.

    I don't know, I am not impressed. I would expect the superior product to trounce the one that is supposed to not be up to par.

    Speaking of luxury, I wonder if anyone will buy that upcoming super duper loaded Optima variant. Hitting the 35K+ field is tough.

    Especially for a company with a long history of cheaply built cars with bad reputations for longevity no matter how much lipstick they put on the pig.

    2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,

    Speaking of that, if luxury is the topic, I wonder how the Equus is faring. Might be hard to determine legit retail sales though, as I suspect dealers are buying more than a few. Setting overly ambitious goals can be as troublesome as underperforming.

    Optima is probably the best Kia ever, and is likely a fine car...but that new limited model is reaching, IMO.

    Yeah, shame they couldn't just wake up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette, and realize that the past couple decades were just a bad dream!

    That's funny, because to me you've perfectly described the old GM. The difference is that both Kia and GM are trying hard to reverse their past misfortunes. It will be interesting to see how each one does. I would say that the Optima looks better to me than the Malibu, but obviously GM still has a much fuller product line with much better SUVs and trucks.
  • circlewcirclew Member Posts: 8,666
    Agreed. 35K is a bad move afaic.

    The superior product is defined by it's predecessor:

    2010 Optima Sales = 27,382
    2011 Optima Sales = 84,590
    2012 Optima Sales YTD June 2012 = 86,475

    The Malibu is averaging over 25K per month so it's still the king in volume "me too" sales. :blush:

    The Optima is making it's mark. The jury is out on the 35K model, however.

  • circlewcirclew Member Posts: 8,666
    GM has been making PIGS for a real long time now...no lipstick necessary! It hurts some to see GM a laughing stock that failed miserably after owning the market. No one can erase their ugly history.

    Smile!

    I wonder how good/bad/otherwise the previous-gen Optima was? I didn't care for it when it first came out, but when they facelifted it for 2009-2010 or whatever, it started to catch my eye. It has a well-proportioned, handsome, if conservative, look to it.

    Too bad, as you'll never see how, like my pro-Ford coworker admitted, it is a quieter car on the highway than the same generation Civic and Matrix.

    I'm making an uncharacteristically narrow-minded comment here...but I'll fit in with the two or three of you (you know who you are).

    The Optima sucks. I hate it. It's awful. Stinks.

    And I've never sat in or driven one.

    Hey, I fit in here now!!

    Wow!

    Actually, I would never make such a stupid statement. I'll leave that to you guys.

    And I would never buy a car that was subsidized and protected in their business by the government of that country.
    Nor would I buy a car with a radical, aggressive union doing the building.

    There. That takes care of Hykia.

    I think Hyundai is already finding it tough to move luxury cars with the "Hyundai" nameplate on them hence the "0-0-0" ads I've been seeing for both the Genesis and Equus. It will take a lot of chutzpah to market a luxury Kia. I've sat in an Optima and I can't see what all the hype is about. It's plug ordinary. I guess HyunKia forgot all about VW's Phaeton debacle.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Actually some Buicks would qualify as luxury cars, so GM does just fine in that regard.
  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,873
    I'm waiting for the new Impala.

    I'm also intrigued by the new Impala.

    I wasn't sure about that downward dip in the rear door, but it could be argued that it's similar to the 'hippy' (not 'hippie') dip in '65-68 Impalas.

    22,085 Genesis sedan plus 2,347 Equus so far for 2012.

    The problem is you have to remove the Genesis coupe from that total. So HyunKia's total luxury car sales is probably under 20k.

    That would put them at the bottom of this list:

    July 2012 YTD
    Mercedes = 159,384
    BMW = 147,801
    Lexus = 126,367
    Acura = 85,761
    Audi = 76,865
    Cadillac = 76,229
    HyunKia = 20k or so

    It takes a while to crack the lux segment, even for brands on a roll.

    "probably the best Kia ever"

    That's kind of like being the "Prettiest Manatee Ever" or the "Most Glamourous Bag Lady."
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Best so far is more appropriate. Don't underestimate Kia...

    Did anyone think this was a good idea?

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/03/us-gm-peugeot-idUSBRE87218420120803

    GM paid 320 million euros ... worth 146 million euros

    :sick:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,427
    And quite a few of those Gen sedans are modest spec for fleet duty or 29K lease specials, too.

    2347 Equus in 7 months, hard to believe. Dealers or rabidly proud Korean expats maybe.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
    It's one thing to buy low, but a French firm? Idiots! One thing, you can't say the gov is running GM any more because even most people there understand how screwed up French business and economics are.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,427
    They've got an Audi stylist to save them from KDM dumpiness, Korean federal backing, US military protecting the homeland, and a lot of ambition. The only way to go is up.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,427
    I'd shop an Optima if I was looking for a family box and I had to buy brand new. Thankfully, I don't shop in that market :shades:

    I don't see Kia making a Phaeton successor for some time, if ever. Although it never ceases to amuse me that the supposed value brand has much of the superior design compared to the bigger brand.
  • circlewcirclew Member Posts: 8,666
    True, but the Optima achieves that and toasts all of those in all around performance. :)

    Why else would they abandon the name????????????? Because it was the best US car ever made?

    Why did the Tercel name become discontinued and the Yaris (nice name, sheesh, although I guess better than 'Fit') take its place in the lineup? And everyone on this board knows that the Cruze did not take the place of the Cobalt...it is most definitely a step up in price and features from the Cobalt.

    Like I'd ever take model name into account when buying a new car. Duh.

    Mine was a Tercel. My neighbor's AWD version was a Corolla Tercel (and she never failed to correct me if I just called it a Tercel).

    GM July sales rise 15 percent (Detroit News)

    ("The whole headline is GM sells nearly 200K cars in China as July sales rise 15 percent".) :)
