Yes, you're correct - thanks. About 3.28 feet in a meter putting it over 16 feet. Glad you had a laugh, I did too. Yes, I teach physics and can't convert meters to feet. Hahahaaa... What a shame eh? No wonder kids are so screwed up.

I've done a lot of things over the years but for the last 24 I've been doing that. Not incorrectly converting things but teaching. LOL

I mean the simplistic equations that good metal equals safety and such. Those are not real equations that have any use or meaning in building a car. Yes, there are lots of equations in Newtonian mechanics - lots. :o)

    cool - thanks pharmd718! that's helpful, i appreciate it.

and where in NY did you pick yours up for $24.5?

    I got it here: http://www.bkcars.com/ :)

We bought our last two Subarus at Kolb Subaru and were very happy all around. We will likely buy our next one there, also.

Since there are so many new Forester owners, thought I'd drop a reminder to consider registering your vehicle at truedelta.com. True Delta is an independent, non-commercial database that measures vehicle reliability based on real owners' experiences. I get typically 1 e-mail a month from them asking for completion of a simple reliability survey and odometer reading. No hassle, plus you're doing your part to help others with their car purchase decisions by supplying factual information to other potential customers. (And it just so happens to be one more way I can show others how great Subarus are. :shades: )

True! Also, like bigger cars are safer, eh?

CR recommended Prestone Bullet Wax, so I thought I would give it a try.

It's easy to apply and does not stain the black trim (plastic and rubber), and worked as advertised. Water beads right up and runs off. I also tried my wax test: toss a rag on the hood, and it should slide right off and fall on the ground. It passed, so I was pleased.

There may be better products (like Klasse?) but with a busy family life the ease-of-use factor was important to me, and the Bullet Wax met my needs.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My Sienna is registered on that site and I will soon add our Forester.

Give the guy some credit - he asks for a portion of the VIN, and follows up constantly with registered members to keep the data up-to-date.

CR, JD Powers, and Strategic Vision all base their scores on a survey filled out at one point in time. True Delta is in touch on a continual basis.

Smart car safe??? You have to be joking. Sure, it scored well for IN IT'S CLASS which there isn't anything that compares save for a motorcycle!!! Smart car head on with Expedition = no one walks away from smart car. Not so smart.

I'm not actually. I was amazed myself that it performed so well. There's an internet video available of it smashing into a stationary barrier at a fairly high speed and the passenger compartment survives relatively intact. I'm not so sure the Expedition would fair as well.

You really need to get past the overly simplistic mass = good mentality :)

The smart car has amazing safety features. Just check out the youtubes on it by typing in smart car safety or smart car crash tests. It might be the best engineered small car in the world for safety. Of course things are relative but my jaw dropped when I saw what they put a Smart car through and they could still open the doors and the passenger compartment was intact. I'm not saying I want one. It would have to get 80mpg for me to consider it any serious way. As is, it only gets like 35mpg. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Can someone please clarify for me: is a rear-view camera available as an option?
And also, if I want Bluetooth option, must I also purchase Navigation System option? (I want Bluetooth, but I already have a portable GPS that I am happy with.)
What model has these options, plus spoiler & raised roof rails? (But I DON'T want leather interior.) Thank you.

    Hi,

I am interested in the 2.5X/Auto. I am looking for a family friendly (expecting first child) and safe small SUV. The Forester seems to be exactly what I am seeking, but I am slightly concerned since it is a first year model. I did not read about any major problems in this thread. Has anyone had any major problems or regrets about buying the 2009 Forester? Is anyone still having problems with some of the minor problems listed in this thread? Thanks for your feedback.

I had concerns prior to purchasing my MY09 Forester. The drivetrain is basically the same one Subaru has been using for the past several years in the Forester except for a few tweaks to the intake. Knowing this and seeing Subaru's reliablity rankings by Consumer Reports, I put the first year concerns behind me.
  • red_rocksred_rocks Member Posts: 2
The rear-view camera is not available by Subaru. You may be able to install an aftermarket one however. The Bluetooth kit only works thru the Navigation system, however the Nav is only available in the X-Limited and XT-Limited.
All models except the base 2.5X (w/o Premium Package) come with roof rails. The spoiler comes standard on the turbo models and as a port or dealer installed accessory on the NA models.

Finally had a chance to take the Forester (XT Limited) on a meaningful road trip, 300 or so miles round trip to western Michigan. Overall, I'm very pleased with the experience. Relatively quiet, plenty of power for merging/passing etc., can drive with the sunroof pretty far open even at highway speeds without the noise driving you batty, and the ride in this thing is superb--outstanding balance between comfort and stability.
At a steady 70 without the air on, fuel economy was a little ahead of the EPA number at 24.6, but at 75 with the AC on it dropped measurably. Average for the whole trip was 22.8, including some stop and go on the Kennedy back in Chicago. I'm not unhappy with that, but my Acura TL stays in the 28-30 mpg range on the highway, so I think that'll stay the summer road trip car in the future. The only other minor gripe is that the steering is a little light at speed--it's great around town, but you have to make a lot of little corrections on the highway.
Overall I couldn't be happier with the Forester--it's got probably the best balance of comfort, utility and performance of any car I've ever owned, and for the price nothing can touch it.

Only problem I've seen in my XT-L are:
Doors sometimes buzz around 55 - 65 degrees (interior metal clearances ?). Rear seats and rear storage areas can rattle over bumps. Roof Light Console can make loud creaks and snaps (fixed by adding internal plastic liners / silicone spray).
Auto trans clunks once in a while when downshifting. Sunvisors feel cheap.
Trim around transmission is __really__ easy to scratch.

Other than those annoyances, XT-L works fine and is proving a good trip car. Engine's responsive w/ very little turbo lag. Mileage is 18 (in town w/ cold engine) to 27 (on freeway, crusing at 65 - 70 w/o AC)). Handles well with little lean. Is really nice to be able to accelerate in turns w/o spinning front/rear out.

XT-L's real test, however, will be this winter.

Do you have the deflector for your moonroof?
  • roj1roj1 Member Posts: 16
Thanks for the feedback kurtmaxxxguy and red rocks.
I am glad the hear that the drive train is basically the same from the past several years. It sounds like there are just some minor annoying things.

Kurt, how frequent and annoying is the buzz around the door? I'll be moving to the Northwest soon where it is always 55-65 degrees.
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
The door buzzes are sort of a hollow buzz that is noticeable with engine near idle and vehicle moving slowly. It is not the trim because you can tap the door with the vehicle parked and hear the door "buzz".
At speed the road noise masks it out.
It seems loudest between 55 and 65 degrees. At high or low temperatures I have not heard it.

If you are looking at a vehicle try lightly rapping outside of door near the rearmost latch mechanism. If you hear a hollow buzz or rattle after your rap, then you may hear the buzz while driving.
My XT-L was built in January 08, so Subaru may have fixed this by now.

*** I'll be moving to the Northwest soon where it is always 55-65 degrees.***

I live in the Northwest with those temps. I'm getting no buzzing or rattles or sounds from the doors or anywhere else with the 09. If I have something sitting loose in the console, glove box, floor or in the back somewhere it will rattle.

Paint anywhere on the vehicle scratches easily or at least more easily than other vehicles I've owned. You have to be extra careful about any hard edged objects touching the exterior paint. Use plenty of soap and water to clean the exterior - the more water the better for avoiding scratches. It might the same for a new Toyota, Mazda, Nisson or whatever. I don't know.

I'm getting better mileage than some are reporting here but I have almost 10,000 miles on ours. I don't baby it and drive it normal - no hot rodding but usually a bit above speed limits. I'm still checking the mileage with a calculator. Sometimes after resetting the trip meter the mpg readout will be under 20mpg and then slowly creep up. Sometimes I just reset it while driving and it can jump to 28 and as high as 33 or even more. Then it will lower to like 27 and then settle to about 25 for in town type driving. If I let it creep up from say 18mpg after resetting it from a stop it will gradually climb to about 25mpg. Like I said on my previous post, we got an honest almost 28mpg for the whole 7,000 mile trip.

No factory or dealer installed camera. It is something important to DW in our next purchase. FWIW, I installled an aftermarket camera on our Yukon today and it took about 2 hours. That also involved answering the phone and taking my daugther to a neighbour for a playdate, so in other words, the install is very easy. Even so, my wife and I would still like a dealer option, but the advantage of a self install is that our camera is now set up biased to "safety mode" which optimized visualization of the ground behind our vehicle. That sort of customization is not available in a factory unit.
  • redherring1redherring1 Member Posts: 66
No optional deflector--because the sunroof is so big, the regular pop-up wind deflector is larger than normal, and if you don't have the roof open all the way it does a more than adequate job on its own.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
You can watch videos of crash tests, here, they have the Smart in both front and sides IIHS videos:

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/safety-recalls/carcrashtest/crashtestvid- eo.htm

It does OK for its size, but there is a chance of head injury, and it does "Good" but it's not a "Best Pick" like the Forester is.

Patrice: the stereo opening is double-DIN, just about the most universal size you can find. Since you do not want leather, get a basic model and then swap it out entirely. You can get DVD capability, GPS, hard drive, backup cam, etc, all for probably less than OE pricing on the GPS.

Roberts: my only regret is that our 2009 Forester is my wife's car. :D

I have an 09 Forester X w/ Premium Package. Bought it in Feb 08, and have about
5K miles on it now. I live in the Pac NW.

I too haven't experienced the various issues raised on this blog regarding rattles, squeaks, buzzing, buttons popping out, other misc sounds, etc. My Forester runs solid and quiet - even over uneven pavement, speed bumps, etc.

I do have to agree, however, with this post comment about the quality/durability of the paint finish. My Forester is the metallic gold color, and I understand that certain darker pigment colors are "softer", but compared to other vehicles I currently own and have owned in the past, I think the Forester paint finish is substandard. This assessment is based upon the scratches and nicks I've picked up so far, and upon a close up detailed eval of the paint finish. The paint thickness seems marginal...(?)

I've also read that Subaru uses an environmentally friendly water based paint type, so maybe that is a contributing factor. And to be fair, my other vehicle currently is a Mercedes - which probably has the best, most technologically advanced paint finish system in the industry (and yes, you do pay for that!). But in any case, it's a disappointment, because I do love the color and how the Forester looks. I just hope it will hold up. [PS - will post pics soon, I promise!].

Can't remember who asked about this a little while back, but someone was asking about how many gallons they were able to get in the tank when it was at 1/2 full? Well I just filled up from 1/2 a tank and was able to get 7.25 gallons.
  • orcorc Member Posts: 39
The paint concerns me as I'm hoping to keep the thing 10 years without having to repaint it. An environmentally friendly paint makes sense I suppose because Subaru is big about that stuff. I like the color too and it's sad to see how easily it scratches. I'm trying to be careful with it.

No car is perfect and they all have down sides. The new 09 Forester is no exception. The interior material quality and the paint bug me but the rest of the car is great. I've own dozens of vehicles over the years and all of them were a compromise. I'm getting old, LOL.

On a side note. I'm afraid the only criteria for cars in the next few years will be gas mileage. People will be giving up what they really want for they need. It will be interesting to see how the automakers respond. What does Subaru have up it's sleeve for cars like the Forester?

Diesel and CVT coming in a few years.

I ordered the trailer hitch for my X-limited and noticed that it has a
1 1/4" square opening as opposed to the usual 2". I would like to get a bike rack for the hitch and would like to know if I will have to buy it from subaru or is there after market bike racks that fit a 1 1/4" trailer hitch? :confuse:
  • bikerguy3bikerguy3 Member Posts: 43
I have the Subaru OEM trailer hitch installed on my 09 Forester.

When purchasing a bike rack, I decided not to buy a 2" hitch rack which
came with an adapter down to the smaller 1 1/4". Instead I bought a lighter,
less expensive rack (mfr'd by Bell) which matched the Subaru hitch directly.
It still holds 4 bikes. I bought it at Joes on sale for about $69. It also folds
down so you can open the rear hatch with rack installed. I'm happy with
    it.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
I have the 1.25" receiver on my WRX and there were a selection of racks available. I run a 3 bike carrier on it. It is harder to find some of the larger/heavier guage ones in that size but they are out there. Another option is an adapter for the receiver to bump up to the 2" size. They had them at our local hitch/trailer retailer and I may go that route now so I can swap the bigger (and nicer) 4 bike carrier I run on the truck between the two vehicles. It puts the carrier a few inches farther back but otherwise works just fine. Just watch your hitch load rating which is probably 200# and the shop owner said they recommend dropping that number by 30# due to the increased torque of the added adapter. No problem if you are running 4 good quality cross country or road bikes, but 3 big hit DH rigs or even dual suspension Costco specials plus the rack itself will exceed that.

I am about to purchase my first Subaru - '09 2.5 X Premium, but I can't decide between Spark or Steel Silver. The dealer had both and parked them side-by-side for me, but I'm still torn.

I'd appreciate comments from current owners. If you have pictures, that would be great too. The pictures in the the brochure and on the website don't show much of a difference.

    Thanks!
  • snowbeltersnowbelter Member Posts: 288
It's really a personal decision. My wife preferred the Spark and then went with Sage Green because she was tired of seeing so many gray cars on the road. I like the Steel because it comes with a black interior while the Spark comes with a platinum interior. Whatever grabs you.
  • sylviecatsylviecat Member Posts: 10
I just double-checked the Subaru site, to get the definitive answer--as I thought, the Spark silver is the one with the black interior. But I'm with your wife on the too many grays. I was considering the Spark silver--I do think it's pretty, and I like the contrast of the dark interior, but every other car is light gray, dark gray, black.
  • sullivanamsullivanam Member Posts: 5
I know that lots of cars are silver or gray. That doesn't bother me.

I think ideally I would like the Spark Silver with the gray interior; unfortunately that's not an option.

It seems that the Steel Silver looks dark in some pictures and in the paint chip in the brochure. When I was at the dealer it didn't seem too dark but now that I am home, I am not sure.
  • cackercacker Member Posts: 9
i just picked up the steel silver this weekend. its a VERY light silver.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I think max tongue weight is 240lbs., FWIW, though I'm not positive. The brochure only mentions the 2400 lbs towing capacity.

I had a 1.25" receiver on my 1998 Forester, usually with 3 bikes on it, and never had a problem. 2" is more universal but like you said, it's heavier.

Someone asked about the fuel tank - full capacity is 16.9 gallons.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We like our Platinum interior so I would have gone with the same color you did. Congrats.
  • tinycadontinycadon Member Posts: 287
Juice, somebody was asking awhile back about how many gallons they were able to put in when the fuel gauge was at 1/2, I think someone was only able to get around 6 gallons if I'm not mistaken. I was able to get 7.25g, have you filled up at 1/2 a tank yet?
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
The hitch on my WRX is stamped 200# max tongue. I run 3 bikes on the Subie's hitch all the time, no problem but combined weight is only 100#.
  • sullivanamsullivanam Member Posts: 5
Thanks. Do you have a picture you could share?

Does the steel silver look darker in certain light?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
My wife fills up, and usually she waits until it's below 1/4 and then fills up all the way.

I don't trust fuel guages nowadays. They start way above Full, end way below Empty, and they always seem to move faster near the middle mark.

I use one of the 2 trip odometers plus the trip computer's avg mpg readout.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Well, it seems that my WRX has become cursed since I've been looking to trade it in. In the last month it had suffered 2 dents and 3 paint scrapes and then last night I was rear-ended because I didn't get going fast enough when the light turned green. The hitch carrier got bent forwards and although it was sitting 6" from the hatch, it left a large central dent in my rear hatch at the moment of impact. It also dented my fender but the ins. adjuster stated that since it's already scratched and scraped that nothing will be done for that. No biggie - everything will get repaired with no cost to me, but before the accident I was going to take the carrier off before I left but then forgot. If I had, I'd probably be getting a nice new bumper now with no other damage. Oh well.
At first I was getting frustrated thinking that each ding is reducing my resale and mad that it keeps getting dinged because I didn't get to trade it in for a new Forester because there aren't any out there. Then I realized that if I had, all this damage would probably have been visited on my new vehicle which would really have p***ed me off.
  • pharmd718pharmd718 Member Posts: 78
Volkov - Thanks man! Now im paranoid about getting my new forester banged up when it arrives!

Actually, I learned a valuable lesson when I was 10. I got a new soccer ball as a gift and it looked really nice. The leather smelled great and the black and white patches were so shinny. I was afraid to take it out to the field and play with it...until a friend said "what are you going to do?..look at it all day?!" A few months later all the paint was taken off from the ball from continues use. It was now brown and you could not smell the leather at all.

So I expect to get a few dings and dents here and there. Especially since I live in NY. Its all part of normal wear and tear. So enjoy your wrx and don't sweat the small stuff.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I was rear-ended because I didn't get going fast enough when the light turned green

I'd say it was because the guy behind you got going a little too fast! ;)

I bet they were on a cell phone, or texting.

I just filled out a survey from Subaru and one of the things I complained about was the color selection. Though I must admit, I went to the Audi Driving Experience and the color pallette for the A4 was very nearly identical, in fact I specifically recall lots of white/black/gray/silver and just 2 colors - red and blue. Sound familiar?

The only difference was Subaru offers a green while Audi only has beige.

I think right now the trend is for customers to go with subtle, conservative colors. Neons from the 90s are out.

While driving to work, my '09 XT-L decided to "sing" every time I turned the steering wheel to the left. An odd 500 Hz or so buzzing came from the steering columm when the wheel was in certain positions during that left turn. :confuse: Turning to the right made no sound.

If anyone else has heard odd sounds while turning I would appreciate the info.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Does it sound like rubber-on-metal? You may want to add lithium grease to the sway bar mounts.
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
Actually, the buzzing/singing noise occurs when the wheel is held in a specific place during a left turn (about 3/4 of a turn to the left). Moving the wheel away from that specific position (either more to the left or back to center) stops the noise.

I'll keep an eye on it and try to better replicate.
  • kurtamaxxxguykurtamaxxxguy Member Posts: 1,798
My XT-L Steering wheel columm sang to me again this morning, and this time when going over a small bump, I could hear the singing "chirp" in and out.

I listened very closely and the sound is definitely inside the columm just outside the dashboard, not being generated outside the passenger compartment.

My guess is, given the steering wheel has numerous controls requiring power/data to be transferred to/from them, either a power induction coil or other device that is not properly fastened down is vibrating for a given steering wheel position.
  • redherring1redherring1 Member Posts: 66
I initially thought that the color selection was limited also, but as you note it's fairly common--it's actually much more extensive than Honda's typically is. My issue with Subaru is more with the limited interior colors, and the fact that you only have one interior color choice with each exterior color. One of the main reasons I got the white was that I didn't want a black interior, and it was the only exterior I liked that came with the platinum. I would have got the red with platinum in a second, but...not offered. Why not give a choice (particularly since I do think that combination is offered in Canada)?
