The Mazda website lists a 180 Watt, 8 speaker system w/ 6 disc CD changer as part of the sport package. This if for the U.S. Spec MPV.

Check out www.contour.org for the FAQ or is it HOWTO about changing plugs on the V6 Duratec. Same engine. http://www.contour.org/mods/mods.php?s=howto&displayid=18

I also think I've posted a short summary of HOWTO (based on my SVT Contour, not the MPV, but the technique should be the same) on www.mpvclub.com in the Do It Yourself forum

Did anyone own or see a LX with "all-sport package", which includes 17-in wheels and 9-speaker system? Would like purchase one like that, but could not find one around here (central VA). Thanks.
  • javadocjavadoc Member Posts: 1,167
I believe the All-Sport package is available for 2003 LX models only, and there are some color combos that aren't available w/the package. I haven't seen one. Having the 9speaker system in my 2000 MPV, it's well worth the added bones for the package, imho.

Anyone install a Delphi Ski-Fi XM-radio in their 2000+ MPV yet? Care to give details... where you put it, cassette vs. FM modulator, etc?

I bought one for my wife for Christmas and was playing with it today. I noticed a very annoying mechanical "chewing" sound from the cassette adapter. This happened with or without the XM radio plugged in, turned on, etc. It also happened with a different (Sony) cassette adapter. Anyone else having trouble with a cassette adapter in the factory radio's cassette deck? For a TV or XM or anything else? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if the dealer cash of 1500 is going up, down, or stay same after Jan 02 on LX. I am finalizing on buying one, but want to see if I to wait till early next year to save some more money.

I have been on the mazda web site a 1000 times and all of there other car and event its suv comes in red but why not the mpv there are still moms who want sporty and RED so tell me what is the deal anyone know ????
  • bob57bob57 Member Posts: 302
Well, right after they made my '01 Red they threw away the paint...
Actually, I haven't a clue. I haven't seen another red MPV around here but then again most of them are 02 & 03's now.
    Ahh, the uniqueness.
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
I have seen no red MPV's around the Twin Cities of MN...nor was there the option of getting one...even ordering from Japan! I saw a couple red older MPV's on the streets though (00's probably). I wanted a red one too..but no dice.

The rebate still stands at $1500 for 03's. I just asked my dealer the other day since I'm waiting on my ordered unit to come in Feb..

We have owned our 2001 MPV for a year now and it has been the best car purchase I have ever made. I want to thank all the posts in the Town Hall, it was the frank comments regarding this car and two others that finalized the decision to purchase the MPV.

Now I want to brag, we live in PA and were hit by the snow storm over Christmas - not the 3 to 4 feet but we did get 10". A lot of snow for this area. To make a long story short, the road problem was large quantities of snow blowing in and people getting stuck in the drifts. I drove into one of these situations and was forced to stop in a drifted area facing up a hill, I thought for sure I would be car #4 in the stuck lane - but not to be. When it was clear to move the van fish tailed a bit at first but than took right off up the hill!

    I love my Mazda!

Can anyone tell me (or point me to directions on) how to remove the factory MPV (2001) radio? I bought the FM modulator for the XM SkiFi radio and need to figure out how to pull out the radio to attach the FM antenna and the power to the modulator.

    Thanks in advance!

I recently test-drove a '03 MPV and got a brochure from the dealer. It doesn't have red as a color choice, and when I mentioned that to the salesman he confirmed it.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
also doesn't list Red for the '03 MPV. Maybe they'll unveil something at one of the upcoming auto shows?

  • javadocjavadoc Member Posts: 1,167
You first have to remove the plastic facing on the dash... by removing the two screws up in the dash cluster. Then, you (carefully) pop the dash facing off (lots of built-in clips). Cast that aside, carefully. Then, you unbolt the radio from it's mounting plates, and viola! you've got yourself a radio in your hands. Oh, disconnect the wiring and antenna from the rear. ;)

Does anyone know any more about delays from the factory that were mentioned several posts ago? We ordered one the 2nd week of December, and dealer says "any day now."

    2003 LX
    4 seasons
    rear step plate
    roof rack
    mud guards
    rear a/c
    cargo net
    DVD system
    side airbags/traction control
    wheel locks

    $21,485

Anyone have any experience with the DVD system?

BTW, we used Sam's Club auto buyer program to find a great deal in the next state, only to use it as a bargaining tool with our local dealer to give us a low price. Haha!
  • glideslopesglideslopes Member Posts: 431
Some manufactures including Mazda were having some mild delays due to the West Coast Dock situation clearing itself out.

That should not be an issue after a few more weeks. IMO.

    Mark.
  • nwangnwang Member Posts: 5
Unbelievable!!! The van you described should be more than 26K+ in MSRP (24K+ invoice). How did you do it? Can you share the dealer info? Thanks.
  • bob57bob57 Member Posts: 302
They didn't offer red after the 01' model year.
What's funny is that a local Mazda dealer's website shows the MPV in red for new vans.
    Maybe they are wishing too.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Someone with a new Red Vue reported that they got pulled out of a whole wolfpack of speeding cars, and it cost them something like $240. Be careful what you wish for :-)

Maybe it's just that some people couldn't care less about voting for the Dodge Ram pickup, Volvo V70, Jeep Liberty, and Isuzu Axiom in some Web poll.
  • tbonertboner Member Posts: 402
Where do I vote to get most of the SUVs off the road? LOL.

Or at the very least, how to make them inoperative if they don't on a monthly basis do one of the following:

    1. Tow something that you can't tow with a car.
    2. Go somewhere where there are no roads.
    3. Drive (at sane speeds) in snow or mud.

I'm not a big fan of SUV's. I'd never really want to prevent someone from buying one, since that is pretty much anti-American.

But I can have lots of legal fun laughing at the posuers, often face to face.

  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
If you do find out where to vote, let me know. SUV's wouldn't be so annoying if people used them for what they were made for, but now days people just use them as cars. Take them off road? Are you nuts? They might get them dirty, or drag some mud into their leather interiors......

....I've been doing some pricing at various Mazda dealers within about a 100 mile radius from where I live. Since I qualify for S-Plan pricing, I've been emailing these dealers to have them give me my S-Plan price quote. I simply tell them I qualify for S-Plan pricing, and ask them to send me the price of their MPV LX with the least amount of options. The lowest price I've been quoted so far is $19,650, which includes the $1500 cash back. This vehicle has about $500 worth of options, which I don't know exactly what they are yet. I know I could save more overall if I could go with the 48 month 0% financing instead of the cash back, but the payments would be too high if I went this route. Is this a good price?
  • libertycatlibertycat Member Posts: 593
tboner, I'm not fond of SUVs either, minivans are much more practical and have more room. I detest Excursions and sneer at anyone inside one (thank goodness they're getting discontinued next year. The world will be a better place). Backy, what are you doing in a minivan discussion if you don't own one, plan to own one, or have one as a dream car. One of my dream cars is a Mazda MPV. If you liked MPVs like many people in this discussion do you would be interested in voting for them.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Where did you get the idea that I don't own a minivan or plan to own one, or that I don't like the MPV? I've posted several times here about my current minivan, a '99 GCS, and how I have been looking closely at the MPV as my next minivan. Right now it is my #1 choice, but I'm going to wait and see what the next-gen Sienna and Ody look like. Don't you read what other people post here? As for voting for MPVs, there are a lot of things I am interested in, but having time to do them all is another matter.
  • rotarykidrotarykid Member Posts: 191
when they made my 2000 mpv with its classic red paint and factory GFX package. I still insist it is the best looking minivan on the road!
  • otishotish Member Posts: 59
You are so right about how great it looks! People still comment on it after 3 years (this month) of ownership.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Mazda brings back red for the MPV for 2004, which would probably be the last year for the current design--something to spice up sales so people don't wait until the '05 model to buy.
  • bottgersbottgers Member Posts: 2,030
I'll take that as meaning this is a good price. BTW, I'm not being funny, I can actually get one for that price.
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
Someone asked about waiting for ordering an MPV from Japan. I was told it would be 90 days. If you order it after the 15th of the month, you'll wait the extra month since orders go through at the 15th of each month. That's the story I got from my dealer in Twin Cities, MN.. Mine is suppose to arrive around Feb. 1st and I ordered in late October. I like red too, but can't wait until 2004, my current van won't last that long.

If you ordered in December, I find it hard you'll see it any day now...unless they are just searching it out in the USA dealership banks.

Let me know how you ordered it. Mine was a really loaded LX without a DVD player...but pretty much everything else except leather and 17" wheels. Looks like you got a nice price to boot too.
  • dwsmhadwsmha Member Posts: 35
My dealer ordered it through the computer as I watched on Dec 9th. I finally got a date out of him. It will be here January 17th. 5 weeks isn't bad...although my wife was bummed because dealer originally said 3-4 weeks.
  • libertycatlibertycat Member Posts: 593
I was referring to two of your separate posts. 4902 was funny, 4904 was a low price!
  • dannyyodannyyo Member Posts: 14
Help!!! I hate buying cars!!! I reluctantly went car shopping and we test drove the 03 MPV LS with the following options:

    - Silver
    - 4-Season Package
    - GFX Package
    - Traction Control & Side Air Bags
    - In-Dash 6-Disc Compact Disc Changer
    - Rear A/C
    - Roof Rack
    - PWR Sliding Doors
    - Rear Bumper Step Plate
    - Wheel Locks

All this for MSRP of $26,900.

There was a rebate and I also told them about the referal.

Then they told me I can take it for $24,500 out the door!!! Is this a good deal? I didn't really think it was, so I walked out. Let me know what some of you paid for something like this. Thanks.

    Dan
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
Geez, I'd say you got a good deal!
I ORDERED one from Japan back in October (still waiting by the way) out the door with license, tax and a 6 year 100K extended warranty was $27,500. I'd say you're in the ballpark. Mine also has the GFX, Fogs, 4-Seas., Side Air, Traction, Roofrack, Moonroof, Rear step, tow hitch, rear AC, Pwr.Doors, 6cd/cass. as an LX model.

    Go for it!

PS: Anyone out there ORDERED one and HOW LONG HAVE YOU WAITED??? I heard someone earlier say they only have to wait 6 weeks or so...I find that hard to believe unless you're living near Japan....
I ordered on Oct.20th and it's SUPPOSE to arrive in February...
  • big_guybig_guy Member Posts: 372
Both the Edmunds TMV calculator and the MazdaUSA website put the MSRP for a Silver MPV LX equipped as you have stated at $26,505. Based on that information, you are working at a $400 disadvantage out the gate. The Edmunds TMV calculator gives a typical purchase price for that MPV of $24,420. This is $80 less than the number you were quoted. If the number they quoted you includes the cash incentive then you are NOT getting a very good deal. You should be able to negotiate the price down to the $24,420 and then apply cash incentive (I think it is at $1500 right now). Or you could finance it for the 0% for 48 months. With interest rates as low as they are right now, I would opt for the cash incentive and get your own financing. That way, the cost out the door should be $22,920 plus ttl. Most savvy shopper are negotiating the price of the MPV to invoice +/- $300 and then applying the cash incentive. You should be able to make a better deal.

    Just my $.02
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
    Good points.
My price was out the door with sales tax (MN. is 6.5% plus License ($400) and delivery charges plus the extended warr. was about $1500 for my total of $27,500. My price prior to all these adders and with the $1500 rebate was $24,239. Then add on tax, license and extended warr. much in line to your price you state from the Mazda site and the one here. If the $26,505 price does not include the extended warranty, sales tax, license, delivery charge, then mine would be a good price. Maybe I'm mixing apples and oranges here. I understood his price as OUT THE DOOR meaning it included all the pieces.
  • big_guybig_guy Member Posts: 372
I agree, if the cost out the door of $24,500 is the actual price including tax, title, and license, then I would agree that it IS a good deal. However, if that price does not include ttl then there is still room to negotiate. Also, most salesmen I have "negotiated" with, use the out the door price as the total before ttl.

Also, I never pay for an extended warranty up front. In all my years of owning cars, I have never had to use the warranty beyond 3 years. Maybe I have just been lucky . . . who knows. The longest I have owned a car (from new) is 7 years (my first car was actually a 1972 Subaru given to me by my folks and it was 12 years old before it started to have transmission problems). If a car is having problems that can't be resolved in the first 4 years of ownership or problems keep occuring up through that 4 years, then there are places where you can buy an extended warranty at that time. Personally, if I was having enough problems that required multiple visits to the dealership for warranty work, I would probably sell or trade the vehicle and get a new one.

    Just my $.02
  • dannyyodannyyo Member Posts: 14
I finally got the van. Thanks for all your input. When I said "out the door" I meant it included tax and license. Anyhow, last night we went and bought the 03 MPV LX for $24,350. I wrote them a check for this amount and drove home with the minivan. The price includes TTL, and $2000 rebate. I originally had it down to $24,000 even, but they had a car alarm pre-installed on all vehicles. I figured what the hell, I need to get an alarm anyways so I decided to just pay them the extra $350.

    Here's what I got for $24,350.

    03 Mazda MVP LX
    Rear Bumper Step Plate
    Roof Rack
    Side Airbags & Traction Control
    Rear Air conditioning -cfc free
    In-Dash 6 Disc CD Changer
    Power Sliding Doors
4-Sesons Pckage wich cosists of (heavy duty wiper motor, rear heater, large windshield washer tank, larger radiator, a/t oil cooler, heated mirrors, heavy duty battery, heavy duty rear defogger, additional cooling fan, 3,000 pound towing capacity.

    The total MSRP was $26,040.

Hope my experience helps others in getting good deals. I hate buying cars and after last night, I still don't like it! But I'm glad we finally got the minivan that we wanted.

The gearshift by the handle does get in the way of the stereo. It's annoying, but I think we can live with it, since most of the stereo controls are on the steering wheel. Good luck shopping!!!

I think you said you live in the Twin Cities. Would you mind telling us where you bought your van? (I live there too.)
  • tccmn1tccmn1 Member Posts: 278
That sounds like a sweet deal.
Where DID you get it in the Twin Cities?

I bought mine through Walser Motorwerks in Blmgtn. Sounds like my deal tracked closely to yours with mine adding the GFX, Moonroof, and Ext. Warranty as was discusssed earlier. I may be a fool for buying it, but I've own 3 Toys (so called high quality vehicles) and have cashed in on all of them beyond the cost of the warr. If the a/c goes out, thats about half or more right there of the cost, etc.
  • big_guybig_guy Member Posts: 372
Congrats on your purchase. It sounds like you got a great deal!

I would like to know what the difference is between having 15" wheels on the MPV versus having 16" or 17". The larger diameters look better but what do they do for the car from a technical standpoint? Compared to the 15" alloys and tires...

Is handling better in the larger diameters?

Do you get more road noise in the larger diameters?

Is the ride bumpier, smoother, or about the same with the larger tires?

I have the 15" alloys on my 02 MPV and think the larger ones will look better. If I make that change once I need to replace my original dunlops, what would I be getting besides a better-looking MPV?
  • evaddaveevaddave Member Posts: 156
With larger wheels and an equal diameter of the tire, what you get is a shorter sidewall on the tire. A shorter sidewall can't flex as much as a taller sidewall. In performance terms that means that the tires on the larger rim keep their size better going around turns and such, which translates into slightly better performance. In comfort terms that means that the tires on the larger rims keep their size better going over bumps, transferring more bumpiness up into the vehicle.

So larger wheels trade away a little comfort for a little better performance.

Or, if you're a tire manufacturer, it means more money in your pocket. :)
