    dcman2,

Time was of the essence for me -- business trips later this week and next and our leased Passat Wagon must be returned next week; wife would have killed me if I'd stranded her with no car! Still, I wish I could have expanded my search all the way to Philly to get that deal!

Fact that dealers in a city only a few hours away from DC would charge thousands of dollars less than dealers here really blows my mind. I hope all DC-area Odyssey buyers will read this and similar boards and bring their business to Baltimore and Philly area dealers. May the DC area dealers choke on their inventory!

The dealer gave you that "invoice" price because he was making a nice profit(~$400) on the mudguards and foglights.

Except that the offer was made without being dependent on my request for foglights and mudguards. Yes, I realize I could have saved $350 by doing it myself with discount Honda parts from the internet. The foglight install is apparently somewhat complex, so I'd risk of messing up my van, plus I would forfeit the factory warranty included if the dealer does the install. I also called around to other dealers before shopping for the van. The best price quoted in my area was just under $100 less including the required 2-3 hours of labor, with a parts pricematch to an online dealer.

Since I'm not that handy, even an extra $100 seemed like a no-brainer and saved at least that much money in my time. YMMV.

I noticed that some people go to another state to buy their dream Odyssey. What happens with the taxes? Which state gets the money? Do you have to pay taxes twice? Is it complicated? I'm thinking about checking out prices in my neighbor state, but the tax issue scares me. :confuse:

I currently have a VW Passat GLX - and with more kids on the way need a minivan. I have my VW lease through Potamkin VW in NYC. They also own Potamkin Honda. The lease on my VW still has 15 months left - but i need the mini- van and want to go with Honda. Does anyone have any negotiating tips or suggestions at all concerning this situation?

Thanks very much to all who apply..... best Craig....

In most cases, it's pretty easy. Usually, you get a "Certificate of Origin" when you purchase the vehicle out of state. You will not normally pay sales taxes, registration or title fees to the state where you purchased the vehicle. When you bring your Certificate of Origin to your own state for registration and title, you will then pay all the required taxes and fees to your state.

Of course, there are always exceptions. Sometimes nearby states will have special agreements where some dealers can collect taxes for your state and do the title/registration for you also. Some out-of-state dealers will charge a small fee for temporary registration to give you time to get the vehicle back to your state for registration. Usually, a call to the dealer where you plan to purchase and your state department that handles vehicle registrations will resolve all the questions.

    dealguy,
Try this-Schaefer&Strohminger. They are a bit North of Baltimore. You can get them to do invoice+$700.

you can always get out of a lease early. The big question is how much it is going to cost you.

Best bet is to treat it like a trade in. Hit a Honda dealer (any one will do), and see what they offer you. They will have to get get the lease buyout amount (same as if you had a car loan to pay off), which will be netted against the trade in value of the VW. Depending on the numbers, you will either have equity, or more likely, you will be upside down.

You can also call the leaseholder (probably VW credit?) and get the payoff amounts now for an earliy turn in, then you only have to worry about the the trade in value.

Where you leased from doesn't matter, since the finance company is what you are dealing with. I suppose it might be easier for a multi-line franchise (Honda and VW) to do the deal, but it shouldn't really impact the $$s. I'm sure that dealers do this stuff all the time.

In my experience you can always get out of a lease early but it's just a matter of what it's going to cost you. :-)
I had one experience where I needed to get out of a lease a year early so I just called the bank where I had my lease and they gave me a payoff for the vehicle (as if I had a regular loan on it) and it was approx 17k if I recall. I then looked up on kbb that the value of my vehicle was around 15k so I was technically 2k under water. I just went into the dealer and never mentioned that it was a lease I just stated that my payoff was 15k and negotiated the tradein up to 17k and was able to get out of it. (I'm sure if I would of went in saying it was a lease they would have worked me over)
I had another opportunity a few years later to get out of a lease early and found out that my payoff was almost 7k above the value of my vehicle because they charged a 5k (i forget the exact amount) lease fee at the beginning and then gave me a 0%apr loan for the entire lease amount. Essentially this meant that if I wanted to pay it off 6 months after I bought it I'd have to pay the entire lease amount including their stupid fee. :-)
I'll admit that these experiences were several years ago so the leases may work a little different now, but I'm betting a call to your lease holder would be a good start. Just ask them for the buyout.

Just purchase 06 touring with nav at Goldboro honda in NC. I too live in Va and decided to jump on the amtrak( $31) to Goldsboro to save over 2000 dollars. My method is quite simple actually. I email approx 30 dealers within a 4hr drive, ( disregard northern va/dc dealers if you really want to save money) and instead of asking for the best offer from the dealership, I specifically stated what I was willing to pay, + stated the color combo I wanted, and the time frame I wanted vehicle by. Only request communication via email and request written quotes. I also stated that I can make a deposit immediately if vehicle can be located in the time frame I specified ( generally 3 days or else deposit is refundable). You would be surprise how many dealers respond stating that they can match your price. you will also get responses requesting that you call or come to the dealership to test drive vehicle. Delete these- again waste of time. Jones honda in lancaster matched my asking price which was +500 over invoice including destination charge but did not have the vehicle I wanted --ocean mist with black interior ( but had a red with olive interior touring with nav), Piazza honda in philadelphia quoted initially 36, 500 then called back several days later informing me of a 'new honda pricing and price drop' -- quoted 35885 ( not sure whether this included destination charge, all other pricing included it ) Odonell honda quoted 37218. I actually thought that I would have my best quote from Odonell given the fact that I had just purchase a black/ivory 06 ody EXL with dvd less than a 1mth ago from them ( which is now for sale by the way) . Entire process took approx 5 days. Most important, get copy of purchase order by email or fax stating the exact parameters you agreed on, the total OTD price which should include all the dealer markup including processing fee etc. ( in my case 36080) before you even contemplate going to the dealership. Drove my vehicle back from dealership last night ( 4hrs ).

Recently I have brought a EXL-RES & NAVI from Hagerstown Honda. The deal was pretty good. $500 over invoice.
34,700 otd price for MD (This includes matts, splash gaurds, wheel locks)

Not that I'm not happy with the EXL with DVD, It is just that I am estatic about the touring and really what I wanted in the 1st place. What can I say , I generally purchase a fully optioned vehicle and I tried to convince myself otherwise on this occasion by purchasing the exl vs touring. Well, I regreted that decison in about 5 days.

Recently I have bought a TOURING with navigation. I dropped by a few dealerships and asked under invoice, which I didn't really expect. Fortunately, in one place, they offered little bit below the invoice and I had to buy there. But, a few days later, my wife got a call from one of the dealers we met who said he has a good news for us. My wife had to say that we already bought a car and that we were sorry. That guy asked where we bought, and complained that I had told him that I would call him in three days, which I don't remember whether it is true or not. Anyway, my wife just kept saying "We are sorry". Then, he said "You people are horrible, and I hope you guys have problem". Is this common so that I should just ignore? Isn't it normal that people try to reduce the price and check other dealers hoping better deal? Maybe he got a strong impression that I would buy a car from him, which was what I intended, frankly to say. Is it that much wrong?
I would appreciate anyone's opinion or comment on this matter.

    do321,
Congratulations on your new purchase, I am quite happy with our Touring with Nav and once you understand how to use everything, you'll enjoy it more. Be happy that you didn't buy from the other dealer that got back to you too late. I am guessing from your post #11126 that English isn't your native language and if so, that may explain some of the miscommunications. It seems that somehow the other dealer got the impression you were exclusively his customer when all you meant to do was let him know you were serious about buying an Odyssey soon. My advice is to stop apologizing to this person and if you are still upset, try calling the dealership sales manager or general manager and explain the situation. Nothing will probably happen to the salesman but you will likely get an apology and good manners are important but often lacking in the car business. On behalf of them, I'm sorry that we Americans (and you may be a citizen) are not always polite when it comes to making a commission sale. Recognize that the only good news the salesman had for you and your wife was that he gets a bigger paycheck if you buy a car from him. What that rude man doesn't realize is he's lost more than one sale if you post the dealership name and Ohio location (sales person's names aren't allowed). The car business is like any other, filled with good and bad. It sounds like you bought at the right place and at a good price, good luck.
  • tommy_2qtommy_2q Member Posts: 6
you did the right thing buying the car at the cheapest price. you were generously nice to a nasty dealer. alot of these dealership people don't care anything about you except for the sale. now, enjoy your van and take care of your family.
  • do321do321 Member Posts: 3
Thanks a lot for your reply. You are right. English is not my native language. Your reply comforts us a lot, and my wife is even happy now. All the bad luck will be gone thanks to your wish. We had a car accident about ten days ago (fortunately, no major injury), and that's why we bought this Odyssey.
We will enjoy our new Odyssey as you do. Thanks again.

Lucky you. I tried this dealer after going through a few messages on this forum. The sales manager gave me a big lecture on Econ 101 about supply and demand. He would not budge. I don't remember the quote. But it was significantly higher than what you indicated. Even if he gave me a great price, I would not have bought it from him anyway. That lecture really turned me off. You probably bought one they already have on their lot. Congratulations. I tried another dealer in Baltimore. The dealership haggled for $100. Can you believe it? I ended up getting one from Philly for invoice+$700 and no additional fees. The dealership delivered the vehicle free of charge.

I would have to join Chessman1 - where do you get invoice prices from? I am looking for a Touring and the cheapest price so far - 33987. Do they all come with NAVI? Anybody from Denver?

    Hi Ed,
Just got my car back. I'll try to send you pics but am not sure how this would work unless I have your email. A good local shop around the Alhambra area is a place called Harry Auto Sound. They are reasonable in price and do good work. You will have to ask them about customizing for the odyssey. I didn't have mine customized.

My setup included a pioneer AVIC-D1 + rear camera, an auxillary dvd player, a 12 inch widescreen flipdown monitor (with dvd player) for the rear, a cd changer and an alarm system with paging function. (Cost somewhere around 3k).

    hope this helps

Edmunds offers up pretty reliable invoice prices. There are other sources as well but rules prohibit posting them. You should be able to meet or slightly beat their listing TMV pricing. All Touring trim Ody's come with RES standard, Navi is about $2K more.

For those shopping in the DC area, you might try Hagerstown Honda, not sure it that's the name but that's where it is, about 15 mins from Frederick. I am from that area originally and almost bought from an Amish run dealership as satisfaction seemed higher on the priority list than greed. Luckily an Atlanta dealer had the exact Touring I wanted inbound and at a great price, lots of adds at cost.

Your invoice price looks very suspicious. It looks within a few dollars of the 2005 invoice price of $27984. The 2006 invoice is $28258. Are you positive you got a 2006? If so,
you really got a great deal or the dealer goofed up.

If it indeed a 2006, congrats!!!!

"Are you positive you got a 2006?"

I got it the day the truck delivered it. In any case, I would not buy the 2005 as it lacked the additional 3rd row tether anchors I needed. I am unable to explain the discrepancy in invoice prices. Maybe some dealers have different invoices, maybe it was last year's invoice, maybe it was some other mistake, maybe published invoices include some variable advertising fee, I don't really know.

I have an excessively detailed account of my buying experience and an exhaustive review and comparison at an Ody-centric club forum elsewhere on the internet. Given that a previous post was censored to remove other information specific to my deal, I suspect a link to the details would not be permitted, either. I'm guessing it isn't too difficult to find, however.

I got an 06 EX-L in Northern NJ for 500 over invoice plus tax and the regular fees. Plus, I didn't get gouged on the infamous NJ documentation fees, as this fee is not regulated....

    Hi Chris,
I am going for the AVIC-D1 but would like to see pics if able. I have ordered the adaptor from scoche and realize I too will need to make mods. BTW, did you take a look at the Eclipse? Seems to target more on the Radio functions?
    ed
  • cwkwancwkwan Member Posts: 12
I did take a look at the Eclipse but did not want to pay the price. I'm not a big fan of high end stereo equipment for cars since I rather spend money on a a decent home sound system. The AVN5495 is a good unit but I couldn't justify the larger difference in price. I'll send you pictures if you can tell me how I can send it. I'm not sure how to do this. BTW, the AVIC-D1 can be bypassed so that you can have navigation functions on all the time. A couple of wires that need to be connected together and grounded. If you get a rear view camera the system also allows split navigation/rear view during normal driving. This comes in handy if you have a flip down rear monitor that interviews with the normal rear-view mirror function. Just let me know how I can email pictures.

Wanted to thank everyone for posting their buying experiences & prices. We just got a Midnight Blue EXL-RES in the Boston area for invoice ($29,696) with no documentation fee - just tax & title.

    Thanks again & good luck!

Sounds like a great deal. We live in the Boston area as well. Would you mind stating the name and city of the dealership?
  • newhondamomnewhondamom Member Posts: 4
We ended up at Honda North in Danvers but has similar pricing experience w/Kelly Honda in Lynn. Honda North had sent out an e-mail to internet subscribers last week offering $200 over invoice. We called Kelly Honda & got invoice plus a $154 document fee. We then called Honda North & were offered invoice plus $200 document fee. We asked them to drop the document fee & we'd take it (in the end, the car was $200 under invoice plus the doc. fee).

To be honest, I suspect if you're willing to invest a little more time & bought tomorrow (the 31st), you could get an even better deal. The prices seemed to have dropped significantly since all the rain we've been having.

Finally, these prices applied to both EXLs & EXL-RESs - we weren't sure until the end which we were going to go with.

Just bought a 2006 Odyssey EX, Silver Metallic with Stone Cloth interior for 26100 + 149$ document fee. TTL is separate. The dealer was Fowler Honda of Norman. Whole experience was great. I told dealer upfront that i wont buy for more than invoice. Did some negotiations on my trade-in and was driving with Oddy in few hrs.
A month ago, no body was agree to sell Ody less than MSRP but now there are plenty in stock and dealers want to boost up their sales number for this year.
I've been a toyota owner for a long time and this is my first Honda. I drove both 06 Sienna and Ody and liked Ody more becasue of its sporty feeling. Drive is very smooth, and lots of standard features inside. Few things i did not like much was the way their 3rd seat recline and interior quality. I am not confident on the integrity of pull strap in the long run. Conventional way of doing it would be much more comfortable. I would give Ody an interior rating of 8/10 and sienna a 9/10. Other than that Ody is better than Sienne.

Thank you very much to everyone, who share their experiences/ suggestions/ recommendation in this wonderful site. The information I gathered in this site was of immense help and made my Odyssey purchase real easy. I really mean it. I think it’s my time to pay back by sharing my shopping details. I live in Gainesville, Florida, and submitted request for quotes to over 15 dealers from Edmunds.com. All dealers gave the quotes, but as I learnt from this forum, I sent them a followup e-mail asking for out-the-door price, which is the key to this shopping! Other than Tampa HondaLand, who tried to play the good old car salesman tricks without giving the OTD price, everyone else gave their OTD price. That’s when I learnt that most of the dealers add a dealer fee or documentation fee (read dealer profit) ranging from $250 to $550 over their original quote! Holman Honda of Fort Lauderdale gave the best quote of $30,304 for 2006 Odyssey EX-Leather and DVD ($29,825 plus $479 dealer fee). I just asked him to include splash guards. That’s it, no bargaining! The internet sales guy was very honest and played no games at all! Though I had to drive 5 hours to get it, it was worth the experience. Internet shopping is indeed the way to buy a car now.

    Out-the-door cost of 2006 Odyssey EX-L and RES: $30,304 + Florida tax + new tag = $32,341.63

After signing the documents, I asked the dealer to show me the cargo tray and all-season floor mats. I felt they are a must and spent another $236. They gave me about 15% discount. I strongly recommend other buyers to buy them. Make sure you negotiate the quote including splash guards, cargo tray and all-season floor mats.

Overall, I spent less than 2 hours on the phone! Paid the deposit with a credit card (faxed it), but the dealer didn’t actually charge until I went there the next day to get the van! I will watch this forum for a few days to answer any questions.

    Thanks & Good Luck
  • davantdavant Member Posts: 294
Gator-ody (they do smell funny this year),

Congrats on getting a good bargain. You might have been able use the mats and/or cargo tray as a deal clincher, I would have tried. At the very least you could have met them halfway between free and dealer cost. Take no priznas!

Thanks for the info I got from this forum. It's time to share our
experience. We are in the market for an 06 Odyssey, the best internet
quotation we got from Southern California dealer are from Riverside Honda,
Power Honda Valencia, Woodland Hills Honda (price in the same ballpark,
but Valencia had the best price on an EX-L/DVD/NAV). Today we bought an
2006 Odyssey EX from Power Honda Valencia at invoice (plus tax and document fee obviously). It was a pleasant experience. I would definitely recommend this dealer if you are planing to buy an Odessey from southern california!

Envy everyone who bought under $1000 over invoice or even at invoice.

We didn't have such luck. After emailing over 20 dealers in and around bay area, we finanlly bought the 06 Odyssey EXL w Nav and Res at El Cerito (about 60 miles from south bay) last week. The price is $1660 over invoice with an out of door price of $36450. No free accessories thrown in at all. The internet sales at El Cerito told us that they only had one or two green/olive Odyssey w NAv and Res coming every month. They sell Odyssey without Nav at $800-1000 over invoice. The rest of the bay area dealers either didn't have the van at all or were asking $3000+ over invoice for EXL with Nav and Res.

Anyway we are happy with the van so far. Thank you to everyone who provided his or her buying experiece. It was very helpful. :P

We have had a great buying experience with Mark Roberts Honda in Bartlesville, OK. [an internet dealer - markroberts.com]. The price we agreed on for a 2006 EX-L, including trade in, was lower than the deal offered by either of the Honda dealers in Albuquerque. The Roberts company promotes itself as a straight shooter, and, in the elusive world of auto deal honesty, that is a hard road to hold. In our case we ordered an ocean mist color. When we drove our trade-in into the shop there was a little trepidation. After all, they are getting the first real time look at the trade-in. There is always the chance that they will find something off so that they can offer you less money than what they had agreed to pay. That did not happen. They inspected the care, came in and told us a couple of things that they thought might have undervalued the car, but said they were not significant enough to lower the value of the trade-in. It took a bit longer than expected to get the van ready to drive home. We took a break for dinner, and, when we got back it was dark. The salesman had driven the van outside and parked it. He was there waiting for us. We tried the keys. They did not work, and he had them reconfigured. We hopped in the van for a long drive home. The next morning we looked at the van, and it seemed more green blue. We also had inspected the van more thoroughly and discovered that they had given us a slate green van with a rear entertainment system - not an option we had purchased. The VIN numbers did not match with the retail sales contract. We notified the company. One of their staff had made an error. But they agreed to eat the loss without a quibble, and we ended up with a RES unit - no need to drive back to OK, no need to argue about the rights and wrongs - they simply did what they thought was right, and gave the customer a benefit rather than a hassle.
