I just bought my Odyssey over the weekend based on my research here. Thanks to edmunds and Thanks to jstephens1 for sharing your experience with Honda of Mentor. The folks are excellent. After few e-mail exchanges, i was offered the price i asked for. I paid 31,000 (inlcudes dest)+ 140 (splash guards) + 120 (Doc fees). There was no sales pressure to buy add-ons or warranty. They Picked me at the airport and as soon as they brought me to the dealership, i closed the deal in less than 1 hr. I certainly recommend to anyone who wants to get a fair deal.

one other thing, i'll be paying tax 5% in my home state MD.

I went to the dealer over the weekend and was actually surprised that they still have an 05. Now I am debating on the purchase of the 05 vs. 06.

I was thinking about offering about $1000 below invoice price and see what happens. The other option is to tell the dealer to install a DVD and I will pay invoice price.

Also, Could anyone tell me what is a good price for a 06 Touring with NAV. I believe the 06 Touring comes with the standard DVD unlike the 05. I am in Northern California, but if a good deal is to be had in Southern California, I will definitely fly there to pick it up.

Thanks in advance.

2-3% holdback....wow....on a 30K vehicle....thats not much profit.

How much does McDonalds and Starbucks knock your head in every day.....you dont cry about them?

Edmunds will take your information and sell it to Autovantage who then re-sells it to dealers who subscribe with them. Here in Maryland Carsdirect has been rendered useless due to the laws where only dealers can actually sell the vehicles.

We used Carsdirect for a couple of years, this was a while back. They didn't do much for us business wise. Autovantage is one of our 3rd party vendors and the quality of the leads we get (from Edmunds) is pretty decent. The highest quality leads come from the dealers own web sites though.

Was this what you were looking for? I am giving you the dealers side of the equation here.

After reviewing Edmunds.com and other sites, I set off to buy a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L. I checked with some local dealers in the VA/MD/DC area. The only one that came close was Pohanka Honda in MD. They finally got to $100 over invoice, but that was after some negotiating that I didn't really want to do. I probably would have bought from them if they had given me that price from the start. I ended up buying from Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg, PA based on some previous posts I saw on this forum. They emailed me their price right away...$28,245 (invoice is $28,258). I'm going to register the car in VA, so they did not have any TTL fees. There was a $45 fee, which I could probably have gotten waived, but the whole experience was so pleasant, I just considered it a tip. They also matched the price on a 8yr/120K extended warranty ($1249) that I got off another Odyssey forum. Faulkner Honda even offered to deliver the car to my door for no additional cost, but I decided I'd rather make the 2-hr drive up just to meet my salesman. It took me 1-hr to sign the papers, and that included a 20 min test drive. It was worth the time to meet him, plus they threw in some wheel locks for making the trip up there. If you're considering buying a Honda, you'd be remiss to not give Faulkner Honda a chance to earn you business. This is the way buying a car should always be!!

I never said that dealers shouldn't make a profit. You missed -- or misconstrued -- my point completely, which was that buyers should know that "invoice" does not truly represent dealer cost. Through holdbacks and other sneaky tricks, dealers have created a very uneven playing field, and buyers should know that.
• jmurman42jmurman42 Member Posts: 675
When you say Holdback and "other sneaky tricks" what do you mean by this?

Holdback is an amount which is 3% of MSRP less the destination fee, which dealers have to cover the non-cash generating costs of their business...such as lights, insurance, employees etc.

Howzit from Hawaii,

Wanted to give some info for those of us who live in Paradise and have only a limited amount of dealership to bargain with.

Saw a thread about someone receiving $600 under invoice from Airport Marina in LA. Emailed them and asked them to match. The internet department accepted and matched that price. Bought the EX-L Silver Pearl Metallic for $27,658 + $45 doc. fee. OTD $27,703

Now comes the trucking and shipping. Pasha Hawaii arranges for a trucking company for $120 to inspect and truck the van to the docks (to avoid paying CA 8% tax). Shipping cost was $900 to Oahu. They were excellent. Due to the holidays my van didn't get onto the ship the day it was suppose to be loaded. They graciously offered to provide me with a rental until it did arrive. They didn't have to according to their contract. They are not tied to a specific delivery date. Picked up the van at Aloha Auto Auction on Ahua St. with only 18 miles on the odometer.

Breakdown on cost to buy from LA:
$27,658.00 Airport Marina Honda
45.00 Doc fees
120.00 trucking/inspection
900.00 shipping to Oahu
236.70 vehicle registration/plates
15.00 safety check
1,108.12 4% state tax

$30,082.82 Grand Total

Prices quotes I received here on Oahu:

Pflueger Honda $32,500 OTD
Windward Honda $32,645 OTD
Tony Honda $33,840 OTD
Costco pricing $100 off of MSRP

As you can see I probably saved $2500 and probably will end up spending it on accessories and extended warranty form Erika. Would do it again. Lots of email and phone calls but it was worth it. Luv my new van!!!!!!!
Mahalo (Thank You in Hawaiian) for all the help I've received from this forum!!!!

What, do new car dealers really try to pull tricks? In the words of Claude Rains, "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!"

There is nothing wrong with holdbacks. But there is everything wrong with dealers portraying "invoice" as their true "cost." I have personally witnessed dealers doing so. There is nothing wrong with trying to inform buyers on this topic.

Got a quote for $1000 over invoice for this vehicle in Silver Pearl/Gray. Touring (includes DVD) and NAV.

BTW, do anyone of you know if NAV includes Bluetooth cell phone capabilities.
• cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
There's no way to tell if $1000 over invoice is a good price without knowing your location as Odyssey prices are wholly dependent on local market forces.

No Odyssey has no factory Bluetooth capability, at least not yet.

After reading the posts here about good deals in the Chicago area, specifically Crystal Lake Honda, Which happens to be only about 8 miles from me, I emailed them for a quote on Monday 01/23, and he came back with $30,980. I went in there and paid exactly that + $1569(tax) + $57 (doc fee) + $80 (Lic fee) for a total of $32686 out the door. They did not have the color (sage brush pearl with ivory leather) in stock, but they said it shouldbe in in about a week or so. All in all, very good experience. No hassles at all. Also, traded in a Ford Escape, so they gave us a loaner (CRV) to use till the car comes in.

That is very good deal. About $700 below invoice. I am trying to get the dealer down to invoice price for an 06 Touring R&N (35,447) in Northern California. Would this be a good deal? or am I asking to much?
• dibbyddibbyd Member Posts: 10
Just bought a 2006 EX-L with R&N in Seaside, CA (Central Coast, near Monterey).

Here’s what I paid:
33,500 Odyssey
2,429 Taxes (7.25%)
1,200 HondaCare 8yr/100K/0 Warranty
288 DMV registration
45 Doc Fee
9 Tire Disposal Fee
37,470 Total

18,500 Trade In (2004 Honda Accord EX-L Auto, 18,200 miles, paid $23K in Sep 2003)

CarsDirect Price: $34,037
Edmunds TMV: $33,636

Dealer started at $34,645 on the Ody, $16,500 on the Accord, and $1,645 on the warranty.

See my post (#879) in the Extended Warranty board for more information about that deal.

Yeah, don't you just love it...holdback is a "sneaky trick"!

It HELPS pay a bit of our massive overhead!

I made a deal for Honda Odessey EX for $25234 + 189 doc fee and tax title and other non dealer related charges. But when I was about to pick up the Van the GM of the store started to make things difficult. He wanted to get an extra 250$.
I know the price was great and all, but I have a signed dealer retail order for the above price with me.
I wanted to know if the dealer can really do that?

Do you know if there is any law/rule which protects the consumer in these cases?

Thanks

OK - Just bought an EX-L Sage Brush Greeen with Olive Leather. So we emailed a bunch of dealers in chicago area. Best offer from Continental in LaGrange at 27500, Grand in Elmhurst wouldn't meet it, but Lisle would and they had our color in stock and even went down another $50. Got 4.75 financing as well. One sore spot - got zinged I think on the extended warranty - paid 1100 for 7/75/$0 deductible. Seems the warranty is available elsewhere for at low as 800 and for 1100 I could get 7/100/$0 - please advise on how to proceed, perhaps easiest is to ask Lisle to give me the 7/100/$0 for the same price, but not sure what they'll say (I did have a no-down deal, but still should be able to back out of the warranty completely if they won't budge). It's already been christened by muddy little feet and we all love it. Good luck to you all - seems like a well-made well-designed family truckster. No real problems at the dealer - straightforward - just don't bring your kids...

Just bought an 06 EXL+RES from Faulkner Honda of Harrisburg, Pa. for $29,400, $120 tags, & 6% Pa. sales tax this past week. Edmunds TMV for the vehicle in our area is $31,115. Including the $4k for our trade, out-the-door price was $27,043.95. No haggle, no B.S., no gimmicks. Best buying experience we've ever had. They did not have the color of our choice, so they located one and had it delivered to our home (130 miles) free of charge.

Anyone living in PA or a state anywhere near PA should consider calling the internet sales manager there. He is very eager to make his customers happy, and makes good on everything. Free delivery within 400 miles of Harrisburg. The gentleman who brought our van to our home said he's recently delivered to MD, VA, NC, OH, MI, CT, NY, NJ, RI....you name it. We received many offers from regional dealerships, and his was by FAR the best price we were offered.

Good luck to all, and thanks for all of the great information on this site.

Thanks to Edmunds and everyone here on the board, I too was able to get a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L exactly what I wanted for about $700 below invoice at Herson's Honda in MD, without going to Ohio, NJ or Pennsylvania. This is similar pricing as the recent post #11670 "EX-L for 27,450 in Chicago". So, remind me again what the invoice price means?

Some observations I learned in the past few months reading these posts:
- Beware, a few of these posts are from dealers themselves
- Contact at least 3 dealers in your area (and other states if you have time)to get the dealers compete for your business. I contacted 7.
- My experience has been that dealers seem to meet your price near the end of the month. I thought this was a fallacy, but it has turned out to be true with my last two car purchases.

Check out Honda Marysville, about 10 minutes northwest of Dublin, OH in the Columbus area off SR 33. Very nice facility and the internet sales manager was very professional and "up front." Fair value on our trade-in Odyssey, which had almost 90,000 miles and a below-invoice offer on a new vehicle. This is a relatively new dealership, and it's nice to have another choice in Central Ohio.

I got this quote from Honda of Buford, GA. I will put a hold on it for this weekend. The "sale" expires tomorrow night.
• thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
If you have a "sale" price till tues night, I would go ahead with it. At the end of the month, some dealers need to hit goals from Honda. IF a dealership was getting additional funds for a reward ie: advertising money, promotional items, etc... they would be very motivated to deliver new vehicles before the month ended.

If the reward was no longer on the table, why would they.

Just buy the van, and start enjoying the best van on the road for your family.

I will put a deposit down to hold the van until this weekend b/c I live in Virginia. I'll fly there Saturday and drive back the same deal.

I put a hold on it b/c I am from Virginia. I will put a deposit down today to "hold the van" for me until Sat.

Where in NJ are you from? We got a great deal At The Garden State Honda in Clifton. 2006 EX-L with R & N for 31,850 including floormats and splash guards
(documents $189, tire fee 7.50 and NJ tax of 6% were extra). Had a similiar deal fall through with a different dealership but this place was very easy to deal with, got the car the day after it came off the truck!! Good Luck

I am in Austin and would be willing to travel in Texas to buy a 2005 or 2006 Ex or EXL. Would like to hear recs on what others have found including pricing/negotiation tips.
Carmax has a 2005 EX w/ 8K miles in Dallas for 26K. Reading other posts it appears that I can get a 2006 for just slighly more. want to buy in the next few weeks to couple of months.
Thanks
• thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
The longer you wait, the harder it would be to find a new 2005.

My question though, what would change between a couple of weeks and a few months? Why not just get it now???

Folks!

First of all I must commend the folks who post their experience and have made this a great forum for exchanging experiences and beating the sleazy car salesman. Please lets keep this going and get as low prices as possible. I have been reading this forum for over a year and I just bought a 2006 Honda Odyssey with EX-L and DVD and NAV, its payback time to post my experience to help others to get as good a deal as possible.

1. Price Paid: 32173 + fees = 35303

This is a unbelievable price to get in Bay Area with all the demand here, most will reduce 500 off the MSRP and best you could get is 33000 and odd. In my case I even found AT invoice with Automall Roseville but it wasn't a color I liked. I wanted redrock pearl and in my case I put a deposit for a pre negotiated price and it came after 5 weeks.

2. Dealership: Elk Grove Honda(near Sacramento)

3. Experience: Absolutely the best I have had in past 15yrs, no sleaze, no mysterious fees appearing all of a sudden.

4. Warranty: The business manager tried to sell me a warranty 7yr/80k for 1900 but I refused because I could get 796 at www.hondawarrantyinfo.com, in just one fax it was all done.

5. Accessories: I bought the following NOT from the dealer as they too expensive.

a. All Season Mats $150
b. Gold Emblem Kit $87
c. Cargo Mat $72
d. Splash Guard $70
e. Cargo Bin $109

This I foolishly bought with the dealership which you can get for $80. I bought these from another dealers Apple Valley Honda in Washington state, avoiding tax and also shipping.

I hope this helps, I will be reading this forum for the next few days and I will signing off until I buy the next Honda vehicle.

Cheers!

Where did you get the accessories? I’ve thought about getting the wood trim, thicker floor mats, wheel locks, and some kind of cargo cover/shelf.

I also wonder how much a set of new seats would cost. I think ivory seats would look nice with the Ocean Mist exterior. That would be worth about a thousand dollars to me.
• salsasalsa Member Posts: 20
$37,136 plus government fees for the “clean”, “out-the-door” price.

OK, I got a quote on a 2006 Odyssey from the dealer closest to me in Miami, Florida. It looks like the ivory interior isn’t available with the ocean mist exterior, so this is the ocean mist with black. I’ll have to see one to be sure I like it, or I’ll see if I could get a set of seats in ivory for around $1,000.

“Clean” means that the quote isn’t complicated with side deals that may affect the dealer’s profit margin on this car, like trade-ins, high-markup accessories, etc. “Out-the-door” means that the destination, dealer service charge, and all other dealer charges are included. Here’s the breakdown:

35997.00
550.00 destination
589.00 dealer srvc
6.50 batt/tire fee fla.
20.00 doc fee
2229.75 tax ( dade county residents add $50.00)
2.00 lemonlaw (Fla)
115.00 tag transfer (New tag add $100.00)
39509.25 total

Hi Salsa,

There are many internel dealers who sell Original Honda Accessories, like there is:

http://www.handa-accessories.com/odyint05.html

In my case I went thru ebay dealers, there are many who sell original honda accessories. I bought thru one Apple Valley Honda, they are honda dealership who sell with competitive price. I did query other ebay dealers, Apple Valley turned out to be the best, they in fact said if I buy the said accessories, the shipping is free, it worked well for me.

I live in a place called Columbus, Indiana which is more or less equal distance from Indianapolis/Cincinati/Louisville. Also it is 250 miles from Chicago so I can even take a 4 hours drive from Chciago and get the VAN if I get a better price.

Anyone have prices for purchaces made in Indianapolis/Cincinati/Louisville.

How do I make a choice to buy between a EX-L or a EX-L RES & NAV.

Some more research I did and the prices in brakets are the differences between the models.

EX L EXL-RES&NAV Difference
MSRP 30,795 34,595 (3800)
INVOICE 27,708 31,123 (3415)
Edmunds TMV 29,769 33,370 (3601)
Carsdirect.com 29,258 33,473 (4215)

Does it really make sence to spend $3,601(as per edmunds TMV) for adding RES & NAV to a EX-L

Any inputs are appreciated.
• snfsma2snfsma2 Member Posts: 8
I would say it depends on how useful those items are to you. We use our RES quite a bit and wouldn't consider buying another car without it. It's great for long trips for kids and adults alike. I haven't had NAV (yet) so can't comment on it.
The carsdirect price I got just now for an EX-L with RES and NAV is $31,973, btw.
• low_ball_88low_ball_88 Member Posts: 171
It seems that samba2's analysis (thanks btw) did not include the (in California) $550 destination charge. The prices that most of the fellow posters include this?

Anyway, I think the $3,601 additional cost for the RES and NAV is worth it when it is manufacture installed. Otherwise, your other option would be to do an aftermarket DVD ($800) and a Nav system ($1000). The only thing that would be built-in would be the DVD while the NAV will be mounted on top of the dash, which to me is ugly.

since i didn't need all the extras, i bought a 06 lx for $24k, sales tax not included, the lx has all the amenities we wanted, also in my opinion a lot of the items on the higher end models like power sliding doors, VCM, etc. might eventually break resulting in more repair costs...sometimes simpler is better in the long run...
• samba2samba2 Member Posts: 38
I am also a person who thinks that spending extra on amenities on a vehicle is not that good an idea.....because it is a depreciating assette....does not increase the resale value....ect...., but in this case I have decided to go with minimum EX-L specially because of the VCM.... Am I thinking in the wrong direction....

Any opinions on this???

I've bought six Hondas in the Cincinnati area... I always find the best prices and highest trade-in allowances at Performance Honda.. though it takes more work than it should..

Century Honda has the best buying experience, though I've only been able to make a deal there one time... but, it is where I take all of my Hondas for service..

Another member here swears by Swope Honda in Louisville.. Of course..others just swear at them... ;)

Hope that helps..

Wow, how did you get this price?! I live about 3 miles from this dealership (it's actually called Honda Mall of Georgia) and I can only get a quote of 29,478 for an EX-L w/ RES. I'd love to get that price for an EX-L w/ NAV AND RES!!

It seems that the Odyssey EX-L with NAV/RES bought by wwdcatc in #11698 may have been used or a new 2005. Has anyone else bought a new 2006 EX-L with NAV/RES, for even 30,000, at Honda Mall of Georgia?

As your research has revealed to you, CRYSTAL LAKE HONDA in CRYSTAL LAKE, ILLINOIS has the lowest prices for Hondas in the nation. Every Honda shopper in the Midwest should consider purchasing their Odyssey from this dealership. At the end of the year,I bought my Odyssey EX-L w/R&N for 30,673,and another Forum member purchased their Odyssey EX-L w/R&N for 30,980. I have not seen any lower price posted in this forum that has been verified by other members. I BELIEVE THESE ARE THE LOWEST PRICES IN THE NATION.
• wwdcatcwwdcatc Member Posts: 35
Actually, I back out of the "deal." I was very fishy about the deal of the century. He left a voice mail and said he could sell '06 EX-L with NAV/DVD for that price...but my wife stated it seems too good to be true and I didn't want to take a chance and go up there and get screwed.

I did call Crystal Lake as well and got an honest quote for $30,873 + $50 doc fees and out of state temp. tags. I may go for that deal and ship back to Virginia. Still save about $1500 from local dealerships and $800 from Ohio dealerships.

In addition, I notice in small print that all internet prices would add $550 in Destination Charge and $499 Doc fees + temp tags. With those charges, it was comparable to those in Crystal Lake Honda.
