overall it drives nicely, and the previous owner seems to have put a lot of work into the vehicle in the past 1.5 years. hopefully he got all the headaches, and i'll get relatively trouble-free driving for the next couple years.
a question: it does have a fairly rough idle. is this normal? just wondering.

2) 500 rpm is about normal idle. Again, without knowing the engine, the roughness could be caused by a couple of different things. I'm sure any Jeep dealer could diagnose the problem for you.
3) Before spending any money on this, check your rear tail lights and 3rd brake light closely. Make sure all 3 bulbs light-up in the 3rd brake light. Also check the sides of your tail lights... they use the small marker bulbs too. Any burned-out bulb will trigger the "rear lamp failure" warning. This is the usually the cause.
4) You could have a burned-out power window motor, or a problem with the door wiring harness... both problems were common. A decent mechanic or your Jeep dealer can diagnose which one is the real problem.
5) This is probably being caused by the viscous coupler in the transfer case going bad. It's no longer opening properly to let your wheel speed differentiate in a tighter turn. Again, this was a problem in the earlier JGC's. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap repair.
If this is true, it will go a long way toward restoring my faith in the DC team. Maybe they really DO listen to us. When you think about it, for $35,000, we've already paid for the rails... now maybe we'll actually get the rest of the Jeep!!
I brought Jeep home, and that same evening after being in shop both seats started working wonderfully, actually driver seat may have been too warm, but now when I tried to use power outlet to charge cell phone, both front outlets will not come on. After I stopped and went into store later that evening, when returned and wanted to warm seats up, NOTHING....NO HEAT AGAIN

Per one bulletin I read that if the '99 JGC was built before Nov.17 1998 there is a Heated Seat Repair Kit (05019769AA) can anyone give me more info. on this. Also how would I know if I have Carbon Fiber Heating Elements, which I also read states NO REPAIR, REPLACEMENT OF SEAT COVERS ONLY.
About two weeks ago my wife noticed a "fluttering" sound coming form the rear end. We took the Jeep to the dealer who said there was a problem with the differential and that it would be repaired under warranty. Two days later the service rep called and said that there was water in the differential that had apparently entered through the "vent tubes". He said that the Jeep must have been overly submerged in water and therefore the $800 repair was not covered by warranty. We do not have a boat and do not drive off road. The car is my wife's who uses it to go back and forth to work and for shopping. There must be some other defect that allowed water to get into the differential. We did not submerge the vehicle. Anyone else have a problem like this?
That would be a pretty strong indication that it is not caused by birds. The probability of a hit on vertical surfaces is tiny compared with horizontal surfaces.

The most annoying experiences are the dealing with the dealership to fix the problem. You never can get the problem taken care of from the first time. You have to dedicate your time and effort to going back and forth to them to prove to them that there is a problem and you would like it to be taken care of and you will always get the response " can not duplicate at this time". It is a real treat and an utter joke dealing with these people who are the epitome of incompetence.
The real disappointment is dealing with Chrysler Corporation and its customer service, whom I think orbit on a different planet altogether.
My recommendation to Chrysler is to create what is called " quality control department"..They ought to try try it...it can help keep customer coming back and for the rest of us. We also need to take those consumer reports seriously.... they have important information which can save us from mistakes like that.
Have you tried going up the chain to "zone reps" or whatever DC calls them, Xrt?

The only birds that have caused the bad paint on your jeep are the ones at Chrysler Corporation. Also, if somebody tells you that this is caused by birds dropping you can rest assure that this person have and IQ of a chicken wing ... if any at all. I can't believe the theories and excuses that these people keep coming up with just to run away from their responsibilities towards their products and admitting that there are problems to be adressed and fixed.
There really is no need to insult chickens! ;-)

Being disgusted with the number of issues I keep having with my 2001 GCL, the rediculouse responses and the run around I keep getting form the dealerships, I contacted a lemon lawyer to have a feel if my case is covered by the lemon law. I went over the issues I had with the car with him since I got it and the back and forth visits to the dealerships to get the problems taken care of. He indicated that I would have a case. He requested all repair tickets to be forwarded to him, which I kept from day one.
Has anybody gone thru this process before?... are there going to be a lot disappointments and hassles? and if the hassle is worth it?
Does anybody have any recommendation or any previous experience they could share?

One thing to weigh is whether it's more economical to eat it on trade or get a lemon-law replacement from Jeep and pay the lawyer. If you trade it, you're done, and you can move on with your life, and there's a lot to be said for that.
But maybe you'll get lucky and DC will come around to a reasonable compromise with you after the first demand letter.

Jeep GC's really are no worse than any other SUV.

That is totally out in left field from any objective data I have ever seen.

Don't give up. Don't even bother going through DC arbitration. IT IS A WASTE OF TIME. Been there done that. It took about 8 weeks to get a "NO" response from DC--even with a letter from pre-paid legal service I have.
I then chose a private lemon law lawyer who specializes in these cases. It only cost me $50 out of pocket for the lawyer. Within 3 weeks I had the check in my hand, and returned the 2000 JGC limited 4x4 fully loaded. Piece of junk. It sounds like the new 2002 are doing much better from the posts above. DO NOT GIVE UP. If you feel like you car is a lemon, pursue your legal rights.

I am glad that he is a fan of JGC. Frankly, people like him keep DC in business. But I do have the one Jeep for him that will quickly change his mind and he will probably get a feel why a site like this exist.
I am willing to let him take it over, since he is that big on JGC. I also will be more than happy to give him the chance to get acquainted with the service mangers at the jeep dealerships: Tom, Dick and stupid Harry, who will introduce him very quickly to the phrase " can not duplicate at this time". They will also try to convince him that whatever he sees, hears and feels is nothing but a figment of his imagination or maybe blame it on some birds dropping or what ever the heck they can come up with ... and trust me, they can come up with all kind of rediculouse explanations.
I will also be more than happy to show him how to contact "Joe Blow, the customer Rep" at Chrysler corporation who is busy picking his nose while trying to tell you that you are really bothering him and you need to work with the dealer to resolve the problem ... I wonder why they call then customer representative and how they pick them....!!!!
When I saw 98jettavr6's entry, I thought to myself: now that is an ignorance that can not be duplicated.
I mean checking tire pressure at rotation should be automatic ..like ham and eggs..and don't they know enough to run the engine for a period of time to get the coolant circulated thru the system..??..I live 30 miles from the dealership..so I have to go air up tires...go buy more anti-freeze to top off the system...Then they insult me by not even calling back...plus the shop rate is 70 bucks an hour...and I have to finish the jnob.???
anyone know about air bubbles in the cooling system??????:)..Don't they know how much this system holds....???
P.S.....I stopped payment on my 169.00 check..bet I hear from them now!!!!!! enough is enough.
States have different procedures to follow in using the lemon law. You need to understand your state law... most require that you go through the manufacturer's arbitration process before you can actually use the lemon law.
I had a 98 JGC go back under my state law. All it required was writing a letter to DC, attaching copies of the work orders to prove the number of attempts to correct the problem, and the cost of mailing this by certified mail. No hassle, no attorney. I posted the entire experience several times out here and it should be easy enough to find with a search of "lemon law".

I bought a 2003 JGC Laredo in November. After about a week, we started noticing inconsistent problems with the locks not working properly, the dome light not going off every time, the computer/compass display not doing what it says it is doing and stating that the door is open when in fact it is not.
We also experienced problems with the parking brake handle (feeling like it is going to rip right off and not feeling very secure).
We scheduled an appointment for these problems, but four days before our appointment, the transmission completely blew out at 1900 miles!
It took a few weeks and the Jeep Dealership replaced the transmission as well as the speed sensor for the ABS (which also had a short in it). The other problems, as many others have stated, resulted in the conclusion by Jeep, "Unable to duplicate".
Question: Am I out of line for thinking that Jeep should replace our car with a new one? I know that we don't qualify for the "Lemon Law" at this point, but shouldn't Jeep take the high road and give in to our request? We have argued until being blue in the face without any success. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments?

If you don't trust it after getting it back then I'd look to trade it in or sell it privately and buy new.

1) Fuel pump causing it to idle rough and start sporadically
2) Driver side power window motor out
3) Front brakes doing the shake and shimmy (scared me to death in rush hour traffic on the highway)
However, I haven't owned a vehicle yet (this is #6) that did not have problems that were "built in" to it. (The best, least troublesome car I have owned was a 91 Camaro
Also, I don't have the repair horror stories to go with these problems. *crosses fingers and knocks on wood* The dealership I lease the Jeep from has fixed all these problems without any hassle whatsoever. In fact, I would call their service dept. outstanding compared to others that I have used previously.
I just dropped of my Jeep today, to have item #3 repaired. I was dreading a $500 brake over-haul but was pleased to hear that it was covered under warranty. Apparantly it is faulty callipers causing this particular problem.
All that being said, my lease is up in April and I don't want to go out and buy a new car at this time. So, I am extending my lease out 18 months. I plan on down-sizing after the 18 months to a more commuter friendly, better gas mileage vehicle. I will miss the 4 wheel drive. But thinking of going hybrid...
Any ideas?
