At the very least, fill up the brake fluid - that's probably why the lights turned on. I think, however, that the problem lies in the fact that the fluid is low. A leak, maybe?
  • jimstodjimstod Member Posts: 3
Yea, I filled the brake fluid to the Max line, didn't change a thing...but thank you very much for the reply! I guess this is too serious to take chances with so I'll have to have it towed.

Has anyone noticed that the rear seats of the 2002 CR-V have a really large gap, about an inch wide? This bothers me that with the gap so large, the upper portion of the seatback vibrates and creates a rattling noise when I drive.

This just drives me crazy with all the noises that goes on in my car...
The intermittent rattle of the moonroof
    Rattle of the seatback
    Road Noise, OEM Tires :(

Does anyone know of a fix for this? I have a long drive to work and back and the noises are constantly present in the hour long drives. (So. Cal);)

Other than these, love the car!

The indicator lights and the ticking noise from one wheel are classic symptoms of a failed ABS sensor. You can probably look at the steering knuckle and see that the sensor mounting bracket or screw has come loose, allowing the sensor to rub the pulse-generator wheel. Since it is very unlikely that your braking safety has been compromised, you can drive the car without worry. If you want to travel quite a few miles before you are able to get to the shop, pull the sensor back so it doesn't rub and secure it to the knuckle with duct tape. The warning lamps will remain lit of course.

I had checked the rear seat of my 2002 CR-V and it turns out that the handle for folding down the seat is loose. Not the attachment to the seat but the handle's spring is sort of loose. I checked the other one on another side and it is much tighter.

I know that I'm nit-picking about this but would the warranty cover this? Thanks

Well, the results are in...The ABS controller was to blame, apparently a problem on '02 CR-V's.

Since posting I have been in touch with *5* other '02 V owners, from EX-LX/Auto-Manual, who had the exact same thing happen around 10-15K...All of whom told me what the problem was before I went into the dealer and were dead-on-the-money.

The theory is that the new design places it too close to the engine & it overheats, but who knows...All I *do* know is that it isn't rare, Honda knows about it (apparently has since April) and when (not if) it happens your brakes will still work (although the ABS might not).

You'll probably just have to wait 2-4 weeks for the replacement part to come in and constantly explain to your friends & family that they're safe in your new vehicle when they see the lights on.

Jeez...I still like the 'V but one has to wonder if the replacement ABS controller will suffer the same fate again and again...Which would really suck after the warrenty ends...and lost a little faith in Honda learning that they knew about the problem and are apparently keeping quiet. One would think that knowing whether you have ABS or not would be somewhat important to a driver, but for the next 2-4 weeks, I know I paid for it...but might have it.

This is my first Honda. Our V has 8000 miles, the Malfunction Indicator Light came on yesterday. Brought it to the dealer today. He said the code came up that told him the gas cap was not tight. I had checked this first because the owners manual suggested this first, and then drove on three different trips but the light did not go out.

The service tech said it takes 52 computer cycles to reset it self but was not sure if the light would turn off without him needing to reset it.

I was wondering if this sounded right?
If so how do I clear this light if it happens again?

    Thank You for any Information.

Hi! Now that Honda has officially recognized the "rocking driver seat" issue with a TSB (technical service bulletin), does anyone know if the dealer will have a fix for it? The last time I looked at the TSB, it did not mention a fix, it just recognized the fact that consumers were complaining about it.

Also, if I know of any TSBs that have fixes associated with them, should I request all the fixes be done to my 2002 CR-V EX Automatic when I next take my car in for service, even if some of the symptoms have not surfaced yet? My car has been riding a little rough lately but nothing really specific. I have 7300 miles on it (mostly highway miles)and I'm just about to take it in for an old change and check up.

    Thanks!

Yes, the dealer should have a fix - my dealer did. Although the jury is still out if they actually fixed it - I feel a slight rock when coming to a stop. Am going to give some time to see what happens. Am due for 7500 mile service soon also. Have a rattle/squeak in headliner area above driver's visor, moonroof shade squeaks/rattles (or it may be the moonroof itself), turning left I hear popping sounds (beleive this is ABS controller). This is my first Honda - not trouble free as I had expected. But still happy with it.

Don't know if dealer would fix something without having symptoms. What TSB's do you know about?

I got the tsb seat fix around 2000 miles on my new crv. It rocked backwards (mostly noticed when taking off-- I have a manual ) Now at 7000 miles the seat shifts very slightly to the left or right when going aroun corners intemittantly. this is enough to drive me crazy. Noises I can take when you feel your sea move on a new car that is supposed to be fixed--now that is not a nice feeling. I plan to take it back maybe to a different dealer--the first has been terrible with service---should that be a problem??? any infor or opinions appreciated Mark

Hi! I'm getting my 2002 CR-V EX 4W Automatic serviced tomorrow (Monday.) I plan to have a 7500 service done although I missed that target and I am already at 7700 miles. I will also ask them to attempt to fix the rocking seat and the clang I hear each morning the very first time I step on the brake. The clang almost sounds like the brakes are stuck and when I step on the brakes, they loosen up and then are fine after that. However, I've never had ABS brakes before and I don't know if that is normal.

To be honest, this is the first Honda I have had this much trouble with. All my other Hondas were perfect from the get-go and stayed perfect right up to the time I sold them. I suppose that's what I get for being so anxious and running out to get one of the first CR-V's off the line when this model came out! But I just loved the looks of it and couldn't resist!

Susanlm - The dealers have a fix for the rocking seat. While some owners are still having problems related to the seat, I know of others that are happy with the fix. Only time will tell.

The brake issue you are describing sounds like something I've read in other forums. Does the same sound happen after you have used the brakes a few times? This is what might be happening:

Brake pads expand when hot and contract when cold. When you first get into the car in the morning, the pads are cold. They fit loosely in the brackets. This allows for a little wiggle room and they make a noise when shifting in the brackets. After you've driven the car for a while, they heat up, expand, and fit the brackets tightly. No more wiggle = no more noise.

This is true of pretty much all cars. The CR-V is a bit unique because, unlike many other cars, you can actually hear the brakes shifting in the brackets. Accord owners have reported the same issue.

Anyway, try listening for the "clang" after the pads have heated up. You should understand that this is not a problem with the brakes. I don't know that the dealership can fix it. (Maybe they can stick a bit of soft foam in there... I dunno..) The noise is normal and the brakes are working as designed. If there is a problem here, it's the fact that there isn't enough sound insulation to prevent you from hearing it.

Let us know how it works out.
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
varmint - what you explained sounds reasonable but I do have a question. If I turn off the car just for a minute, then go again, the brakes will still make the clunk reverse/forward - they would still be hot, so why would they not fit the brackets? This again happens the first time I step on the brakes either reverse or forward.

I had my 2002 cr-v. since march and i did mention before that the black tart is was soft and sticky
back them. Well i was going to detail the lil cr-v and the bottom is all cover with road sand stick to that CRAP that still soft to the touch. All of you owners of 2002 cr-v's do you have this problem is that crap still soft and full of road sand?
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
the noise can be minimized and or stoped by using brake disc quiet on the back side of the pads. Honda does consider the noise to be normal, however it is anoying and can be helped with the dic brake quiet..

My brand new CRV has 120 miles on it and I will head back to the service bay for the SECOND time!

This vehicle ran out of gas on the dealer's lot with 8 miles on it...before I bought it. It was full when I picked it up.

The service tech told me the gas tank/cap code was what came up on the computer and yes , running out of gas was probably what caused the light to come on. Fine...annoying that I had to bring my car in so soon but fine its fixed. Fifty miles later (tonight) the light comes on (and stays on) again!

I will be at the dealership's service area when they open tomorrow morning.

I have not made my first payment on this car!?!
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
Muckyduck - Is yours an EX? There is also a noise associated with the ABS self test. The car automatically taps the brakes to insure that the ABS system is active. I don't know much more about this one. I've never heard it described as a clunk (like the loose pads), but it could be the same deal.

This should only happen once when the car is first moved (forward or backward). The other clunk is a more common complaint and will happen the first few times the brakes are used (until the pads heat up).
  • wellresearchedwellresearched Member Posts: 63
Another few miles and the light is on again. I spoke to the general manager and he concurred 3 trips for repair in under 200 miles was unacceptable. He arranged for a rental car. That was yesterday.

I received a call this afternoon to say my CRV was fixed and ready to be picked up ..then immediately another call to say the malfunction light had come on once again and they would be calling.....somewhere else for suggestions on what to try next.

I'm very discouraged and am afraid that I may have a "lemon."

The vehicle does not have 3 HUNDRED miles on it yet..

    Hi,

Sorry to bother you guys again.

Now we will buy 2002 CRV EX and pay it tomorrow. However, you know the dealer always has lots of tricks to earn more money from us.

They told us we have the following useful options:

    1. Tires&alloy wheel protection($189 for 3 years)
Actually we think it should be included in standard warranty but dealer told us not. Is that true?

    2. Painting Sealing(Something smooth to add on your car surface to protect your car) $159

    3. Front Wheel mud protection(They said rear wheel mud is standard and this is optional but I can not find it on manual, can you tell me your car's situation?) $155

Another minor question is we got moonroof instead of standard sun roof. The sales man told us they are same. Is that true?

    Thanks a lot.
  • inkieinkie Member Posts: 281
I don't know what the tire and wheel protecton warranty is. I think the tires are covered and the wheels are covered with standard warranties.Unless they mean its some type of protective chemical covering they apply and blowout coverage.

You don't need the sealer for the paint. Just use good wax {check the message board for waxes and different applications to protect the clearcoat and paint.

You can buy the mudgards for around 25.00 to 30.00 from honda suppliers on line. Directions are included, if you know what a phillips head screwdriver is you can instsall in fifteen minutes.

Moonroof and sun roof are the same.

    Happy CRVing!
  • haijianghaijiang Member Posts: 13
the tire and wheel protection that dealer told me is if you have any damage or accident on your tire, they can change alloy tire for you.
    For 3 years.

    I hate these greedy dealer.:-)

Look into the Lemon law - in my state, MI three failed attempts to fix the same problem qualifies the car as a lemon.
  • freeberfreeber Member Posts: 116
THe car never left the lot before the third occurance, right? (The dealer called you) So technically it's only been in twice.
  • wellresearchedwellresearched Member Posts: 63
For obvious reasons I looked into this. I just picked up my CRV. It is Friday and my CRV had been at the dealership since Monday.

If I am reading the law correctly, cars are not "lemons" until the repair fails FOUR times. In other words, they have 3 chances to fix it. If it fails after the third time, (for the same problem) it qualifies as a lemon.

As of today, they have repaired it 3 times. If it fails again they WILL get this vehicle back.

They beleive they fixed it... they said some line was never connected...it was flawed at the factory.

I must say the service people, as well as the General Manager were very professional and customer oriented. They also knew they had one VERY unhappy person to deal with.

    Time will tell.

Hi I got my new 2002 CRV EX last Friday.
I love it so far. My only question is when I am at a light on Drive and breaking I notice some rattling/vibration on the steering wheel. It is worse if the AC is on. It is not terrible but noticeable and at some points I notice it on my seat as well. I definetly feel it on my hand and it goes up my arms! It only happens when it is on drive and I am stopped on traffic. Once I start going it drives great.

Let me know if this is normal. If it is not I am taking it back to the dealer for them to check out. Also I am pretty sure the dealer told me that other than not drive the CRV rough at the beginning I did not need to do anything to break it in. Is this true? I hope so!!

    Thanks!
  • inkieinkie Member Posts: 281
I have been driving a crv since dec. never experienced vibration you describe, take it in to check it out! As far as break-in avoid hard breaking for at least 300 miles and vary speeds for first 500 miles avoid high revs. and use of speed control.

I purchased a 1999 CR-V EX Aug. 1st (from a private owner) and the engine light came on a week after I had it. I took it to a Honda dealer and after a 75.00 diagnostic charge they told me that nothing turned up on the computer and they reset the code. A week later the light came back on. Can anyone give some advice on this matter?
  • barcinobarcino Member Posts: 8
My husband checked our Maxima engine light code himself. It was really easy. You can go to Barnes & Noble and get a guide to the car and year that you own then it gives you the codes and the way you can do your own testing. You can check it before you take it in like we did so you know what is going on wihtout having to spend the $75 without having a clue if they will find something. What we did was NOT reset it once we found the error so they did not know we had touched it just to be safe and not have them accuse us of tampering or something :)

That would be my recommendation. If you are really tight $$ wise you could even return the book after you are done since you only need it for a sec!
  • gbal33gbal33 Member Posts: 2
Thanks for the help, I'll pick up one of the guides for the car.

walk in and ask to borrow a pen and a piece of paper and copy out the information from the book without therefore having to wrestle with your conscience, so to speak, about perpetrating a fraud--a perfectly legal fraud, but a fraud nonetheless--that in days gone by would never have been spoken about and perhaps only undertaken on the sly by (I feel, optimistically) very few people. Not so now, unfortunately. Ah well, the days of George Baily are no more, perhaps they never were, and Mr. Potter rules the world, of that you can be sure. . . .

I have a 2002 CRV-EX and as Jimstod noted in post #110 my ABS light and brake light both came on and stayed on at 16,000 miles. Jimstod said he had his ABS sensor replaced. The Honda dealer told me I needed a new modulator accumulator assembly (probably the same thing). They gave me a rental car and said they should have the part tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. My question is twofold:
    1. Is it safe to drive the car as it was?
    2. Is this a problem I can expect to reoccur due to sensor being to close to the engine and overheating?

We absolutely love this little CRV. Yes, I have done the P1164 code engine malfunction light (they replaced our O2 sensor before this was recognized as not being the cure in Novvember last year - never had another problem with it so far) but we have not experienced any sunroof rattle or drivers seat rocking. Car has been everything we wanted and more.

Minor disappointment in the 22.8 MPG average for the 16,000 miles but a wonderful tradeoff for the torquey little 4 banger. However, I find it ridiculous that Honda makes it so hard to reach the oil filters but I am getting used to that also.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
    1. Is it safe to drive the car as it was?
Yes when ever the abs light is on the system by default goes to the normal braking mode without much of a differance in pedal feel if any at all.

    2. Is this a problem I can expect to reoccur due to sensor being to close to the engine and overheating?

Not that I know of. I have yet to even see this problem but I have read about it and heard it talked about before.
    Good luck
  • qguqgu Member Posts: 93
Even with brake system goes back to normal mode when ABS malfunctions, you as a driver need to adjust your way to handle the brakes, especially in slippery situations.

What about ABS gone bad but warning light not on and you are driving in a snowy day, go figure.

I have a 1999 CR-V EX model that has 40,000 miles. Whenever I make a u-turn I hear the squealing noise from the back. I took it to the dealer and they told me that the car needs new sequential fluid. I checked the owner's manual and it said to replace at 90,000 miles. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

I would do the diff fluid change. It uses dual pump fluid and does break down and cause the rear to chatter on turns...

My 2002 CR-V EX has pulled to the right since I received it in July. I do a lot of highway driving and it is very tiring holding the steering wheel so the car goes straight.
It now has about 5000 miles on it and went in to the dealer for its first oil change. I told them about the pulling. They first tried switching the two front tires and told me it was fixed. It wasn't. I brought it back and they kept it for 2 days trying to figure it out. They've done 2 front end alignments, tried different tires altogether, but they haven't been able to fix the pull problem. They now have a call in to the Honda Tech Service to see if they have a clue.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
  • muannmuann Member Posts: 7
My 02 LX had the same issue. My dealer did a 4-wheel alignment twice before it's fixed. It now runs like a charm.
You should have a different dealer perform a 4-wheel alignment. Alignment is an art from my experience.

My 2000 EX, 21K, just had the SRS light come on last week. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't expect it to be a major problem. It is still under warranty, I just need to find the time to take it in.
The only other issue I had was around 13K. The air ducts in front of the windshield got blocked up with leaves, debris, etc... and I was getting water dripping in to the front passanger side feet area from under the glove box. The dealer cleaned it out, re-sealed it, and I have not had a problem since.

I think you'll find the terms are used interchangably today. Way back when I believe the first glass "sunroofs" were called "moonroofs" because you can see through them when closed at night IE-see the moon.

I have a problem I haven't seen mentioned. I bought an '02 CRV EX in March, and now have 9000 miles on it. I have been very happy--no dreaded PTTR, or phantom CEL signals, or clunks or buzzes, no rocking front seat, no slanting arm rests. HOWEVER, I have noticed that sometimes the ignition key will pull out when the car is still in drive or reverse (after the engine is turned off.)
The Honda Service people have never seen this, and are ordering a new starter/key.
I posted this also on the owners' problem/solution board, but this site seems more active, so I thought I'd try here also.
    Any thoughts?
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
I have yet to see that problem usally you cant get the keys out when they go bad..let us know what happens.Good luck
  • spokanespokane Member Posts: 514
That does sound like an unusual problem but it is not a serious one. It almost has to be a faulty lock cylinder, lock cylinder solenoid, switch at the shifter console, or an electrical circuit failure associated with these components. It should be an easy fix. The starter is not at fault.
  • hotsoupshotsoups Member Posts: 12
Thank you everyone who suggested that I change the differential fluid. I did it and now I have no more noise coming out of the rear wheels when I do a sharp turn.

My mother purchased a new CR-V EX w/auto transmission about 3 1/2 weeks ago. Very nice vehicle overall, but there are a few niggles.

I have also noticed the clunking noise from the brakes, and they do make the noise whether hot or cold.

    Also...

    - The front suspension seems to make a creaking noise at times, when accelerating from a stop.

    - The drivers seat is rocking back and forth, and the driver's arm rest does not stop in a level position when rotating it into position.

    - I have noticed a recurring problem in which the door locks do not always unlock when using the remote.

    - One day last week the rear cargo light would not turn off when the rear door was closed.

This CR-V was manufactured in England...for the others reporting these problems, do you see a pattern that correlates to the location of manufacture?

I'm going to have all these issues checked during the first routine service visit, and see what the dealer says about them.

One thing that I am especially disappointed in is the durability of the interior plastic trim in the cargo area and on the "B" pillar. The interior color is tan, and the dark brown trim is easily scratched whether you hit it with a fingernail or with the seat belt buckle. It now looks like this 3-week-old car is 10 years old.

I went to lunch today in a friend's 1995 Civic which has similar-color trim, and the plastic was much more durable...I intentionally tried to scratch it, and there was no blemish whatsoever.

It would be nice if they had instead used the soft-touch material that is on the inside door grab handle & the 3 storage trays above the glove compartment.

The problem with the seat honda knows about it they will be able to order the parts and fix it.
The door locks if you are using the remote control "press unlock once and the drivers side will unlock press it twice and all doors and the back swing gate will all unlock. the front brakes the front pats will shift as you break either going forward or in reverse for first time causing that click noise at one point or the other we all will have it.
    love my wife cr-v 02.
    like my civic 02.

Just took a trip in the 2002 CRV-EX and drove about 1,200 miles. Driving about 78-80 MPH on the interstate (about 80% of these miles) I averaged 23.2 MPG. I thought it was unusual since I have averaged 23.8 MPG since I bought the V and it currently has 19K total miles.

Although most of the miles around town are 50/50 interstate commuting (the wife's car and she only drives 65-70 around town), I was still surprised that I got worse mileage on the vacation.

I said all of this to voice one of my few complaints about this car. This vehicle needs overdrive or different gearing on the highway. It would make a significant difference in MPG in my opinion (of course I really don't know enough to make that statement with any technical expertise). Just my $0.02.

The aerodynamics of the CR-V are good for a vehicle of its size, but not so good that they defy the laws of physics. Slow down and your mileage will improve.

I'd worry more about your health insurance and life insurance than your mpg!!!
