Who was that from? Pugi? You could probably do a little better, but it will likely require on site negotiation & possibly walking.

Last week, I bought 2009 Sonata GLS 4cyl auto from Fitzmall in Clearwater, FL.
They sold it at the listed price in their web site. There is no haggle or pressure at all. Everything was straightforward during the transaction and no hidden cost or surprise.
    $15,973 + doc($499) + TTL.
I contacted a few dealers in my area (Orlando) before going there but nobody could offer the same price range. It was worth driving for 2.5hrs.
I would recommend them if you are in central FL area.

My wife and I got a quote from Rosen Hyundai in Illinois for a Limited 4cyl without Nav. It seems a little high based on reading through the last 10 pages or so, but I didn't see too many prices from Illinois.

    22,780 + 150 doc + 1605 tax + 105 plates
    - 2000 rebate
    22,640 OTD price

This seems to be more in line with what people are paying for the model with Nav. What would you recommend we go back with? Thanks for your help!

This was in the central Florida area. I went last night to test drive and was about to purchase but had an issue with the finance department. This one of many issues i've had with this place and will not purchase my vehicle from them. They were going to give me the 09 Limited I4 for $21.6 OTD, so again you have some room on your quoted price.

Who is the # 1 volume Hyundai dealer in the nation? I want to buy 4 09 Sonata GLS can any one suggest where can I get real good deal I got the quote $16.5 OTD

I have decided not to help those OTD questions that don't exclude tax. Please include everything and exclude tax in your OTD prices. Please also clearly mention that you have excluded tax or at least mention both with tax and without tax OTD prices. Here is an example. Two people buy Sonata in two different states with the following prices.
Persion 1 in state A buys a Sonata for 15000 and 1000 doc fee!!!. His state charges 50% tax!!! so he pays OTD of 15000+1000+7500=23500 !!
Person 2 in state B buys a Sonata for 18000 and 0 doc fee. His state charges 0% tax. So he pays OTD of 18000 +0+0=18000 !!!

Which one bought the car cheaper? The answer is clear. Person 1 because he paid 16K OTD and person B paid 18K OTD.

Once again no clear number in your questions => No help.
  • xiaomanxiaoman Member Posts: 8
this is strange. I bought the car for $15500 OTD from Alexandria. They also threw in floor mats and cargo mat for free. I qualify for $400 graduate rebate though.

I'm sure others will help people here who put in all the information they want, as some of us want to know all the numbers. The posts that you don't deem "worthy" of your opinion...by all means don't respond. Guess I missed the part where this was "your" forum. My bad.
Was at the local Hyundai store looking for an Accent and Elantra for my girls and came across some very nice Sonatas on the lot. Many were 4 cylinder models since we don't need a whole lot of extra power down here in flat South Florida. They did all have an add on for stripes, mouldings etc. which added to the window sticker. And the doc fees here are outrageous. The new dash looks very upscale and plan to show it to the wife when we go to buy the other cars as she just might like the '09 Sonata enough to trade out of her '05 3s.
Very impressed with Hyundai's offerings of late.

    The Sandman :)

I think nhphd's point is that it's impossible to make an intelligent statement about a deal using only the "out the door" price. There's even some occasional disagreement as to what is meant by "out the door". TT&L is going to vary county to county and state to state.

IMHO, the only number that is of any value for our purposes here is the total price (out the door) paid minus TT&L. In other words, the amount of money that goes to the dealer whether it's called payment for the car or some kind of fee. That's the amount the dealer actually gets or takes from you depending on your point of view.

Isn't the more important question, which Hyundai dealers offer the biggest discounts on the Sonata?

If you scroll back a ways here you'll see a few dealers pop up repeatedly in terms of lowest prices. There are a small number of dealers, it appears mainly on the East Coast, that offer huge discounts under invoice on a regular basis. Some, e.g. Fitzmall and Towne Hyundai, advertise their "Internet" pricing on the web so it's easy to see what their best deals are. Example (picked just because I happen to know the details): Towne's published Internet special pricing on the Sonata GLS right now is $2000 under invoice, before rebates. So that would put around $15.5k before TT&L, or less depending on which special rebates you qualify for.

What part of the country do you live in and how far are you willing to travel to get a good deal on a Sonata? That will narrow down the potential list of dealers.

    Hi all,

I've just started looking for a new car, trying to decide between the GLS & the Honda Accord. Anyway, Freehold Hyundai just emailed me a 'special' internet price of $16,413. Looking over this forum, it seems that better prices have been quoted, but those are for the 2008 or even 2007 models--so is this decent, or should I keep looking?

And also, if anyone wanted to weigh in on the Accord vs. the Sonata, I'd love to hear that too. Thanks!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Was that price plus TT&L? Did it include the destination charge (sometimes dealers don't include that in quotes)? Which rebates did it include? What options if any?

Have you driven both the Sonata GLS and Accord yet? The closest Accord trim to the GLS MT is the LX MT. Personally I prefer the Sonata GLS over the Accord LX, but you really need to drive both cars to see if you could live with either one--then it comes down to price.
  • smg225smg225 Member Posts: 7
I've driven a 2004 Accord LX manual, I liked it very much--a little underpowered, but I don't want to pay for a v6 (besides, I don't think the Accord even has a v6 manual model). My sister-in-law has a 2001 Elantra, just over 100,000 miles and has only needed regular maintenance--it's kind of rickety-feeling at higher speeds but sturdy and dependable, so that's my feeling for Hyundai. We're looking for something safe and dependable to put the kids in, with enough trunk space to go to Costco with, and want to spend less rather than more.

I emailed Flemington Hyundai with the questions you brought up, and I'll edit this post to include the answers when I get them. Thanks for the quick response, by the way!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
So are you comparing the 2009 Sonata to an older Accord, or would you be looking at a new 2008/9 Accord, which is considerably different from the 2003-2007 models? For example, the 2008/9 Accord LX has about the same power as the Sonata, and more than the 2004 model.
  • smg225smg225 Member Posts: 7
I'm comparing the 2009 Accord with the 2009 Sonata.

Also: the dealer hasn't gotten back to me on those questions, but I'm assuming, until I hear otherwise, that the price quoted includes as little as possible--i.e. doesn't include taxes, does include the $2,000 rebate, etc. I'm guessing the dealers try to keep it as confusing as possible, with all the different pricing options, and it works! I feel pretty confused, trying to sort out what is what. So thank you, everyone who chips in with your thoughts and information.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
    My two cents:

Accord and Sonata are almost the same. Hyundai comes with more options for the same price. Even the high end Accord does not necessarily come with fog light while in Sonata SE and limited it is included. You don't see the average gas consum consumption meter in accord. It uses more gas. So if you want to keep you car for at least 6 years go with Hyundai. If you will change it in 3 years, go with Accord. Used Hyundai is tough to sell.

I like the way you broke down the OTD price, however your numbers don't add up. It's $100 short. Looks like you got a good price and I am starting to look for a 2009 GLS Sonata in the Chicagoland area and I want to make sure I got the numbers right. Assuming the OTD price is correct, I did a little figuring. I took the 1029.32 tax and divided by .06 and I came up with $17,155.33 which didn't make sense, so after playing around with the numbers, I was wondering if the breakdown could be something like this:

    $18642.00 - purchase price *taxable
$ 180.00 - Doc/Service *taxable (suprised that this is taxable, but OK)
    --------------
    $18822.00 subtotal
    $ 2000.00 rebate
    ---------------
    $16822.00 subtotal
    $ 1009.32 6% tax ($20 difference but wait)
    -----------------
    $17831.32
$ 143.00 title, registration, and license fees?
    ----------------
    $17974.32 OTD

Maybe it is ironic, but in Illinois, the registration fee is $78 and the title transfer fee is $65 for a total of $143.

Could you please clarify what the actual breakdown is? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, that's helpful.

More specific pricing info: the price before was off, he thought I wanted an auto trans. The offer now is $15,029 for a 4 cylinder GLS manual trans. This includes the $2,000 manufacturer's incentive rebate, but does not count ttl or other fees, which he said will come to $1,700 - $1,900, based on how the DMV assesses the licensing fee, which in NJ can be between $29 and $234 (I don't know why he can't be more specific on this large a spread, but there you go, it's out of his hands). So total price off the lot, including the $2,000 incentive rebate and all additional fees, would be $16,729-$16,929.

That's about as specific as I can get! We're taking it for a test drive tomorrow, so any additional advice or thoughts would be extremely helpful. Thank you again, everyone, for making your expertise available, it really does help.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Sonata from FitzMall this weekend, I'm dealing w/ Douglass. He said he can give me a 4.9% loan for 5 years. I'm paying cash plus a 10k loan. Glad to hear you where pleased, eases my mind.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
I believe he has no control over tax and licensing fee. You should care about that $15029 and the doc fee that you will pay to the dealer and maybe the loan rate that he may provide you. When you know that you can not go lower on the price, ask him to throw floor and cargo mat and net free for you. It will cost the dealer less that $50 for all 3.

After shopping around for over a week, personally visiting every Hyundai dealership in Northern NJ we purchased our 2009 Sonata GLS (auto trans.) for a grand total of $17,772.16. That includes TTL. We purchased from Stateline Hyundai in Phillipsburg, NJ. It was a pleasure doing business with this dealership. No pressure, no lies, no hidden costs, and they even dropped the etching fee on our request. We would recommend this dealership to everyone. Thanks to all on this forum for your invaluable information which helped us become better educated buyers.
  • smg225smg225 Member Posts: 7
Went for a test drive yesterday; there was no manual trans on the lot (guy said it had sold the night before, mm-hmm), so I drove an auto--great ride, btw, I don't think I've ever driven such a smoothly-shifting auto before--and will go back later this week to try the manual and, if I like it, to take it. I got the final price a little lower, $14,889, which worked out to an OTD price of $17,083.98 (and yes, he threw in the mats and net for free, thanks for the tip). Looking at kewlguy's post, if I had shopped around more aggressively maybe I could have saved a little more, but this price took some work, he must have some serious negotiating skills! That said, I'm happy with what we settled on, and look forward to getting the car.

I am looking to purchase a 2009 Hyunda Sonata GLS (auto) and one thing i've noticed in this thread is that people don't specify whether they're buying cash or financing. There seems to be quite a difference in prices. I'm purchasing my car in the NE and the best I've been able to get offered for a cash transaction is about $16.5 before taxes and registration fees. If i finance, I can do for less than 15k pre-tax.
Are there people who are getting these $15k - $15.5k prices for cash transactions? Or is my $16.5k quote pretty good? I'd like to figure out if I'm getting a decent deal or if i'm still about $1k off.
Also, my $16.5k before taxes is before all that delivery fee stuff. . . so it will just add local tax rate and $150 or so of title/registration
thanks in advance for any helpful replies!

If I'm reading you right, you will also have to add a "doc fee." In some states the doc fee can vary greatly from one dealer to the next.

If you can get better price by $1K to $1.5K by financing, finance it. Put down as much as they will allow, financing the balance. Then, when the first payment is due, pay off the loan. Your interest charges will be minimal, especially compared to the "cash price" difference.
  • budhbudh Member Posts: 109
So you can get the car for $1,000 or more less if you finance?

Gee, let me see.....how about financing it and paying off the entire loan one month later?

  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
When a dealer finances you, he gets about $50 to $150 commission for financing you. If he gives you a better deal for financing, that means that he is jacking up the cash price to discourage you from paying cash. If he says, with finacing the price is 16K and for cash it is 17K, it means that you should be able to get for cash at 16K. Don't buy into that crap. If you want to finance it then do it but don't let the dealer to play that trick with you. Tell him you will get financing from your local bank ;)

Can someone please explain to me exactly what the bluetooth option gives you and if it's worth adding it?
  • prosource1prosource1 Member Posts: 234
Whether you pay cash or finance the dealer is removing the car from their 'floorplan' and that is all that matters. The idea that paying cash or not paying cash gets you a better deal is simply not accurate. Think about it.
  • newcarnjnewcarnj Member Posts: 1
smg225. Can you tell which dealer you got this quote from? I've been looking at 09 GLS 4cyl automatic with PEP. I requested Internet quotes to three dealers but only two replied back. One offer was $16,670 (incl. destination) but before TTL. The other quote just stated $2K under invoice w/o saying what's included. I don't think these two quotes include PEP. Following an advise from this forum, I tried to do most of negotiation via emails before walk into the dealer room, but dealers refused to provide any more detail via emails. Plus, Towne Hyundai did not even responded to my request.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
It would only be accurate if there is a special financing offer involving a rebate, and the rebate is only available if you use the manufacturer's financing. That is pretty common, but to my knowledge is not in effect right now for the Sonata.
  • smg225smg225 Member Posts: 7
Flemington Hyundai is our dealership. We actually got a slightly better offer from the Hyundai dealership in Denville, but they couldn't get a manual in in time for the $2,000 rebate (what we get for shopping at the end of the month . . .). I think the Denville quote was ~$450 higher, but that's for the automatic. We have a UPromise credit card, and they have a car-buying program, the Denville dealership participates--if you belong to Costco, they have a pretty good buying program too, check out Costco.com.

As far as how I shopped for a dealer: I actually just used the Edmonds.com dealer-quote service to find this dealership, and then later realized I had access to the UPromise and Costco buying programs, and Flemington matched first the Costco and then the lower UPromise quote from Denville, though the delivery charge would have been covered by Denville and was not by Flemington. But we wanted a manual, so we're going with the really good price from Flemington, as opposed to the perfect price from Denville. C'est la vie.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

I got a OTD quote for a GLS Automatic Trans. $18,500 is that a good price?
    It includes:
    Price after rebate - $16,287
plus a state $250 tag deposit
    plus a $27.50 state tire/battery waste fee
    plus a $689.50 dealer/prep fee.

Does the dealer fee seams high? what is a usual fee?
I have always bought used cars from private owners except for my current leased German suv; so I do not have much experience with dealers.

Anyone think next month's discount will be better? Hoping for low interest rate financing through Hyundai and a loyalty rebate :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Uhm... can you give us more details on the car? Trim level, powertrain, options, MSRP?
  • hanyhany Member Posts: 5
    See my edit above.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I think you should shop around some more for a dealer that will not charge such an exhorbitant "dealer/prep" fee. FYI, the window sticker on the car states that the MSRP includes dealer prep. With that fee and the $2000 rebate, the price is a bit under invoice--pretty good, but depending on where you live much better deals are available.

You aren't too far from Clearwater... consider http://www.fitzmall.com/default.asp?lstAREA=FL they seem to be pretty good guys according to a lot of the posters here.
Sorry backy, I pushed the wrong button.

It basically allows you to talk/answer/make calls on your phone "hands-free" . This option allows you to pair upto 7 phones (you can specify the priority order) and when you are in car, you basically make calls/answer calls (or use the phone-book to dial numbers etc) using it. I am in CA where the "hands-free" law is in effect so this is pretty useful. Even otherwise, I would recommend it: it's invoice is $292.
Note that you have to get this installed from factory:: dealer cannot install it. It basically replaces the sun-glass holder near the sunroof.

    Hope this helps.

The bluetooth Hyundai lists is made by Johnson Controls and is available for purchase on the web. Mt local installer put mine in for me in the sunglass holder and it works fine.

    Hi
I am looking to buy a 2009 Sonata GLS I4, Manual. with

    MSRP 19175..
    Dealer disc: 2200
    Sell Price : 16975 + 1400 (Tax of 8.25%) + 200 Lic
    Mfg Rebate : -2000

    OTD price : ~16,500

Can we get better prices than this in SF South Bay area?

Also i could not find any information on APR financing rates available on the Hyundai site. It just says see your dealer. Do we have any low APR financng available on Hyundai these days? I am looking to buy this weekend and would appreciate some guidance soon.

    Thanks!
  • godwheelgodwheel Member Posts: 25
    Mitsin,

I think you are at about the right range. We've seen other cars go for about $14,998 (after the 2,000 rebate) so it seems that's what you are getting.

Let me know how it goes.
  • mitsinmitsin Member Posts: 19
Thanks !. Any idea about any low APR financing available from Hyundai in addition to the rebates? Dealers say no special offers at this time. And the hyundai site just says see your dealer.
  • moocow1moocow1 Member Posts: 230
Hmm, so 14975 before ttl. That's pretty decent for base manual. I got 16600 for auto with package 2 with $2k off, which looks comparable to your deal. My OTD was 18.3. in sf mid-bay ;)
Btw not sure who you're talked to, but I recommend talking to the internet guy from sunnyvale hyundai.
  • mitsinmitsin Member Posts: 19
I did quotes from the sunnyvale hyundai over internet and its comparable. I am still trying to fiure out if any of the dealers have any low rate financing available in addition to the rebates. So far did not hear any low APR from Hyundai. Which dealer did you use?

    Thanks!

btw there seems to be some great deals on Ford in this area for labor day weekend. Dealer adv 7500 off MSRP for Ford Fusion. Now i am wondering whether a Ford would be more value with these discounts? :confuse:

    so many choices... sigh.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
There is something wrong here. The MSRP for the Sonata GLS I4 with automatic and floor mats is at least $20,085, and a few hundred more if it has the new pricing. So this is a really good deal on the I4 auto. But I wonder where the sales rep got his MSRP? It appears to the the MSRP for the Sonata I4 with a stick shift. So you might want to check with the salesperson to make sure he quoted you on an automatic and not a stick.

P.S. I think it is against Town Hall rules to post the name or phone number of a salesperson.

Thanks to everyone who provided valuable information on these forums. As a grateful member, I am posting the price I paid for my 2009 sonata limited 4 cyl. This model is without the navigation package and cargo nets, but includes floor mats. Total price (inclusive of dest, title & registration, and Wisconsin state tax @5.5%) == $ 21350.

I just hope I got a good deal, because I personally could not find any price lower that people paid on the forum.

    Once again, thanks all.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
It would be nice of you(and everyone else) to include what dealership you bought from and where they are located then other members in the same area could possibly get the same deal. No saleman's names though. Looks like you did well.
  • ramtajogiramtajogi Member Posts: 21
People have been getting around same OTD price in NJ where sales tax is 7%.

But I still think you got a good deal because there are BIG volume dealers in NJ who could potentially give you great price. Considering the fact that Wisconsin might not have that much dealer competition, you paid a very good price. Congratulations and enjoy your new Sonata! :)
