Was 29,000.00 out the door a good price to pay for a 2004 Honda Odyssey EXL RES in April 2004?

    Thanks!
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,562
little late to worry about it now!

Also, you can't really say if an OTD price is good w/o knowing what the tax, tags and doc fees are where ou bought. How about posting what you got, the MSRP, and what you paid before fees?

But, condisering that the MSRP was 30K plus, you seem to have gotten a pretty good discount.

You are right...it IS a little too late.

Overall, I think I got a good deal (especially for Fayetteville, NC).

The fact that I drove to the Honda dealer in a 2004 Toyota Sienna probably didn't hurt either....

My wife is a little upset over not getting a 2005, however, since I realize it would probably be impossible to get into an equivalent 2005 Honda for under 30,000 I feel quite blessed.

I will try to look at what I paid for everything....

Sure there is demand and supply, but I think it is unlike houses. Houses are not expensive by themselfs, but land usually is. Land is expensive because there is only so much of it. Cars can be made. Every day Honda makes more of them.

04 Acura MDX is selling at close to invoice prices for those who have given up on 05 Odyssey good alternative to Odyssey

Purchased a 2004 Odyssey EX-RES for $1000 under invoice. Out the door was just over $26,000. Got some leads from Carsdirect and also emailed every dealership in the Central Florida area by going to the Honda website and locating all those within our region. Sent emails to all dealerships and got the lowest out-the-door price. Local Courtesy Honda matched the lowest offer. All negotiating done via email and purchased same night we walked in the door to do the test drive. Very good experience! Grateful to all the infomation found at Carsdirect and other online resources.

Just finished purchasing a 2005 EX-L from Stevens Creek Honda in SJ. Will be picking it up tomorrow. The buying experience was a pretty good and I was very happy with my saleman and the F&I guy.

I put a deposit several weeks ago for an EX-L and was finally able to see one last Saturday. I was shock to see that their markup was $4995!!! I pointed out that Fairfield, Tracy and Vacaville Honda were selling at MSRP but they wouldn't budge for the longest time. As I left, they were offering $500 over MSRP. Today I got a call from them and they offered me MSRP. My sales guy said that things were slow today, so he hammered on the manager to lower the price.

One thing I'm really happy about is the financing. I had financing lined up from CapitalOne for around 4.6%. I also had financing (home equity loan) from my bank at about the same % but a variable rate. When I went to the dealer I was going to use the home equity loan (interest is tax deductible). The F&I guy first offered me the Honda 4.3% fixed rate. Then he noticed that a manager had left a paper from Chase Manhattan which had a 3.79APR. I wasn't expecting to get such a low rate, but everything looked kosher on the paperwork (no prepayment penalty, fixed rate, etc).

Can't wait to take possession tomorrow:-) Thanks to everyone on the newsgroup for your posts and advice!

Yep, price do come down really fast. A lot faster than I thought.
    1. Honda set the MSRP way too high.
    2. dealer's lot are just flooded w/ the new ody, 15000 of them already on their lot and keep pouring in. And did they say that it was SLOW?

$1300, $1000 under MSRP were already seen on the very 1st. day. $750-500 under MSRP is every where now.

Sienna is selling almost at invoice, if not under, and trying to get the crown of best selling minivan this year.

This is my first Honda and I have a newbie question. Anyone have suggestions on whether to take the Honda Care extended warranty? It extends the bumper to bumper coverage from 3yr/36k miles to 7yr/100k.

The price was $1950 for a $0 deductable. The warranty is refundable if not utilized in the period after the original warranty expires.

I went ahead and bought the coverage. My reasoning is that the variable displacement engine is still a relatively new technology and sounds really expensive to repair.I still have several weeks to decide to cancel and get a full refund.

$1000-$1300 off MSRP...where is this? The previous poster was happy to buy one at MSRP at his location.

I live just northwest of Philadelphia. I sent out emails to about 8 of the closest Honda dealers for an EX-L with NAV and RES.

I got back 6 responses offering MSRP as their “best price.” Some dealers also offered an extra perk (i.e. 5yr/60K warranty, free lifetime inspection, free first service, discount on parts and scheduled service… one place offered to throw in the roof rack.)

I don’t know if they are willing to go any lower, but it’s pretty apparent no one should be charging over MSRP.

Stopped at Arrowhead Honda in NE phoenix yesterday and they had $3795 added value equip on their touring model. Stopped earlier at Honda Cars of Mesa in Mesa and they were at MSRP.
MSRP is toooo high for this retiree who is on his 3rd ODY
  • hpanhpan Member Posts: 61
They can mark up as much as they like, but for the ver few ones they have sold, how much were they sold for? I bet not much over MSRP if at all.

On the other hand, the dealers won't worry for now if they have not sold the few on their lots. They probably want to keep a few for people to look at and test drive. It helps their showroom traffic and gives them a chance to get the phone numbers of potential customers.

The dealership was Stevens Creek Honda in SJ. EX-L in silver pearl.
    MSRP + dest $30810
    doc fee $45
    tax $2545
    service contract $1956
    title $256
    "california tire fee" $5

Of interest. It sounds like Hopkins Honda in Sunnyvale may be able to make MSRP. They were asking 2900 over when I went by the other day. They had my desired vehicle in stock but I w couldn't get them down to MSRP. Last night the saleman called and left a message - sounds like they are willing to talk. To late late for them:-)

Also. I would highly recommend Vacaville Honda. Their internet staff was very friendly and professional. They have always offered the 05 Odyssey at MSRP. Had the local dealership not had mine in stock, I would have went with them

Confirmed Vacaville MSRP. Stockton Honda asking $2000+MSRP at this time. Lodi Honda MSRP.

I'd like to ask the question again, where did you see dealers selling the 05 OD for less than MSRP? I don't believe any dealer is selling them at $1K to $1.3K belows MSRP. Wherever this place is let me know, so I can go there.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,562
My wife will probably make a final decision soon on what she wants (likely to be the EX-L). If it is, I'll probably just monitor the supply/demand for a month or so.

I think we should have a pretty good idea by early November (~6 weeks) how sales are going. If there are starting to be some vans in stock, you should be able to get discounts fairly easily with a little leg work.

If by Thanksgiving I can get a deal on an EX-L for mid-29s (about 1K off MSRP), delivery in December, that should do it. I don't think you will see much better than that before the end of the MY.

The warranty is 7years/100k miles (whichever is sooner). It is a bumper-to-bumper warranty. Also include roadside assistance, trip interruption coverage, rental car, and a bunch of other stuff. Another benefit is that the warranty is paid back in full if I do not make a claim on it from the time the original 3yr/36k warranty expires and the 7years.

Out of curiosity, I called a relative who owns a GM dealership close by. I was shocked to hear that comprable coverage for one of their minivans is $1400. I thought that I had gotten ripped off. He suggested that I call other Honda dealerships in check their rates.

After calling 3 dealerships I found that the price is pretty fair. They all said that the MSRP for the coverage was actuallly $2600! Turns out that all of them offered the coverage for about $1900. One dealership offered $1400, but when I called back they said that it was a misquote and $1900 was the going rate.
  • moomoo Member Posts: 18
I definately believe that the price will go down a bit in the next few months. With 2 Bay Area dealerships suddenly dropping the price to MSRP, it sounds like something is up.

I think that if I were more patient I could have waited it out and saved a little money. At this time, though, we really do need the van as we have quite a few visitors coming in the next few weeks. It was a tradeoff between convenience and a few bucks.

Truthfully. I don't believe that MSRP is a GREAT price, but I do believe that it is a FAIR price. I end up with a good vehicle that I could really use/enjoy and the dealership folks earn some money. Sounds like a win-win:-)

What was the term length of your loan? I have been shopping rates and you generally get the low rate for 36 months.

Today, a friend purchased 05 EX-L RES $500 below MSRP (caveat: they had a trade-in and dealer probabably made their money that way)

the 1.3K under was mentioned couple days ago here in edmunds, but forgot which board here. another guy/dealer is offering $999 under in Chicago area on another forum and got their forum admin's approval. and 750 under were reported at many locations too. 500 under at all costcos. and dealers have been calling back their customers to remove their markup to MSRP because of SLOW...

Costco rules!!! I called all the local dealers nobody would go less than MSRP. I went to Costco.com and signed up. Within 30 mins a dealer that told me no less than MSRP said their Costco deal was $500 less than MSRP.

Obviously you are a dealer/salesperson or you're just dumb. If you are the latter read "confessions of a car salesman" at: http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/42962/article.html?- tid=edmunds.a.landing.feature..3.*

In Southern California I paid 595.00 total for my lowjack.
  • moomoo Member Posts: 18
the loan term was for 60months. They offered up to 66 months as an option, but of course the rate goes up. The bank was Chase Manhattan.

As for the terms of the service contract is there a specific point people were inquiring about? The terms section of the contract reads like my tax form and would like quite a bit of typing to post:-( Most of the stuff on there I found on the honda website for Honda Care.
  • bsaccobsacco Member Posts: 11
why pay an extra $595 for a lowjack?...what's with you people...it's a box with 4 wheels! Let go! That's just insult to injury...by the time they locate your coveted Ody it will have been stripped clean and indiv parts will all have tracking numbers via fed ex...

Thanks for the flame but no, I am not a dealer nor a salesperson. But as listed in a previous post though, I do admit to having family in the industry.

A "dumb" decision for one may make economic sense for another. I have 2 primary options. Should I rent a minivan for the next few weeks at around $250/wk to haul around in-laws, and THEN buy an Odyssey - while hoping the price has fallen to offset the rental? OR should I pay MSRP upfront now and let my family enjoy the van immediately?

If you can wait it out and save a few bucks then by all means do so. I can't recall a situation where MSRP when UP during a model year:-) If you are in a time critical situation, then your options change. Thanks

Oh yeah. Keeping the in-laws impressed adds a ton of bonus points to option 2 :-)

We took delivery of an '05 Odyssey last night making us the first Alaskans to drive off the lot with one. I had worked with the dealer before and because of those efforts and no trade, they sold me the van at MSRP ($28,510 with destination charges for the EX). I was very happy to get this van at all, let alone for this price.

They had one '04 left and we did side-by-side comparisons, driving them both and wringing the seats and features out with three of our four kids. There is no comparison. Add to this the safety features and performance of the new '05, well, the '04 seems a bit plain. I would list all the great features of the '05 but Honda does a much better job on their web site: http://www.hondacars.com/models/model_overview.asp?ModelName=Odys- sey

The '05 is the new king on the block. Sienna's crown has been stripped and returned to Honda. Yes, the Sienna had a lot to do with this new Honda being here, but here it is, and it is worth it.

I'm in the chicago area drove the EXL, very nice. Essentially drives like a car. Gorgeous interior and drives much better than the Sienna.

Interested in getting the EXL with Navi and RES but no one seems to have one in white, one dealer claims he can special order a white one but another dealer told me they just get what they get based on prior sales in the area.

Anyone know the real scoop on if dealers really can ask the factory for a specific trim level and color to be delivered to their dealership?

A few dealers in the San Francisco Bay Area are willing to sell their last 2004 EX-DVD for $24K including destination. This makes it so hard for me to decide whether to buy the 2004 EX-DVD or the 2005 EX-L DVD & Navi at MSRP. I do need the DVD and also want the Navi but don't like leather seats.

    Which one would you buy?
  • unc1992unc1992 Member Posts: 1
Spoke to my dealer today (Leith Honda) and he confirmed my order for a EX-L RES should be here next week. Signed up three weeks ago @ MSRP. Tried several dealers and none were below MSRP in this area has anyone found one?
  • hpanhpan Member Posts: 61
Marin Honda. I spoke to their Internet sales manager, and he was willing to sell his last one (Sandstone) at $23,988 including destination.

There was at least one other dealer, but I need to confirm with its sales manager again.

Thanks for sharing the dealership info in the boards so everyone can benefit.

Just a reminder - it is best NOT to post your email address in the boards. 1) if advice is in email, not everyone can benefit. 2) bots/spiders crawl our boards and your email address then gets added to many SPAM lists which I'm sure you don't want. (nothing we can do about this).

Just came home from visiting Honda of Santa Monica. I took one look at the sticker...they were asking 5k OVER msrp so I walked out without even test driving it. Where are some of the dealers in LA that aren't trying to rip us off? Or even in Northern Calif. Sac area? May lean more towards the SIenna too if dealers are marking up so much.
  • sstrattosstratto Member Posts: 5
My wife and I stopped by a dealer (NJ) w/ a number of 05 Odysseys on the lot. We were able to get an offer of 500 off the MSRP. The sticker actually had a 2000 market adjustment on it. We were looking at the colors and were not prepared to buy that evening (had our 18mo old with us who was in the process of melting down).

We expect to purchase very soon - who knows maybe we can do better.

I couldn't see 05 Odyssey's on the Costco's Auto webpage. Can anybody tell me how do you reqest quote thru costoco for a 2005 Odyssey which doesn't even show up.

Please let the board know if the gas sloshing issue that has plagued prior model years still exists or not, paticularly since the gas tank has been redesigned for 2005.
  • balee1balee1 Member Posts: 11
From what I hear, dealers place their orders once a month for 2 months out. They are alloted a certain amount but yes, they can order any color they want. Another option is for your dealer to re-route your color choice from another dealer. If the other dealer will give it up in exchange for a similiar Odyssey, you can get it quicker. That's what happened when I got my 2004 Accord. Pretty simple process from what I hear.

    Hope this helps!

    carbuyer3,

Penske Honda in Ontario is selling for MSRP. I put down a $500 deposit for a touring. I would give you the name of my salesman and his phone number (and ask that you tell him I referred you), but that is apparently against forum rules.
