    Hi,

I am thinking about either buying a new 2005 Honda Odyseey EX or a 2002 certified pre-owned. From all what I heard, buying certified pre-owned can save money because it avoid the initial depreciation. But when I compare the price I start questioning that belief.

    (1) I dealership quoted me $26K for a new car. (Including destination fee.)
    (2) In my area there are 10 certified pre-owned. All are about the same: average 3-year old, mileage 35K; priced at $21K. (I assume I can negotiate the price down a little but don't know how much.)

As you can see, buying a certified pre-owned saves only about $6K. But I will get a 3 years old, 35K miles car.

I don't know if in the case of Honda Odyssey, buying certified pre-owned is a good idea. Maybe buying new makes better sense.

Your opinions will be much appreciated!!

    dear Tony,
I think buying a certified used CAN be a great way of saving some money on a car, especially for cars that depreciate in value considerably during the first 2-4 years. We also thought about getting a 1-2 year old Odyssey. In the end, I decided against it for a couple of reasons:

*Hondas simply keep their value too well (it's a problem, right?!!). :-) in other words, you don't save very much for getting a used vehicle.

*the interest rate negates some of the difference. Some of us have been able to get pretty good rates for a new car, and the used rates are always higher. Even a 1% difference is about a 500$ difference, so that gap is closed.

*I like some of the changes on the new Odyssey, especially with respect to the additional safety featured, the 3cylinder option, and most importantly for us, the split and store third row, which we use all the time. I can't quite explain it, but the design of the new ones just feel more contemporary to me.

At the end of the days, these are great minivans, and i don't think you can go wrong either way. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy it and it is a great car for you and the family.

The problem with Honda...and I think Toyota as well is that their cars hold their value so well, it is just not worth it to buy used. I think all his points are right on.

The only possible exception is if you can get a used vehicle from a private seller. As a general rule, you'll get it cheaper from the private seller and may be able to get the price down low enough where it does make sense to buy used. Of course this has it's own risks(non-certified, is there anytihng wrong with the car, etc), but I personally think they are not all that high.

For me - I'm looking at a Sienna or Ody. I'll buy new pretty much for all of the reason tpan says.

Can somebody suggest which of the following cars is better:

Nissan QUEST S - on the road price $ 23, 000 (because of the Nissan's rebates and below invoice price bargaining)
    v/s
Honda Odyssey EX - on road $ 28,000

Is the Odyssey worth that extra $5000.0 (i.e ~ 20 % price difference). I personally donot like to center console in the Odyssey. But in terms of driving and car exterior, it is not bad. As much as Honda looks good, it is difficult to justify the extra $5000.0

    dear tpan,

That's wonderful news. Congratulations on the decision, and hope you are pleased with the car. We've had ours for a couple of weeks, and couldn't be happier with the van.

Well, I'm still shopping around, and I did get an email from Dick Brooks saying that they would sell at invoice. I recently visited Honda Carland in Roswell, just to show the wife the Sage Brush Pearl color. We ended up letting the salesman do his thing, and he initially offered us $2000 for the Grand Voyager, and during some negotiations, they upped it to $2500. Over the past couple of weeks, I've found that Honda Carland ($600 over invoice) and Dick Brooks (invoice) in SC are willing to deal, but Conyers Honda and Team Honda have told me that those were great deals, and that I should buy my car there. I've called other dealers, and the claim is that the cars are selling fast, so they don't have to deal. Good for them, but not good for me. So, I'll have some more fun with other dealers until I pull the trigger. BTW: I was told by virtually all dealers that the lighter colors sell, and the darker colors do not, and the dark colors are hard to find because they aren't made as much as the light colors. My wife wants a midnight blue!!

I'll be buying an Odyssey EX at the end of June in Minneapolis-St Paul. Anyone have any recent experiences and/or feedback on dealers in this area? I saw some good feedback about Motorwerks Honda in La Crosse, WI, but unfortunately I will have to stick to local dealers. Thanks!
  • jam5jam5 Member Posts: 2
Do you know any special fincncing available now for Odyssey with Honda? Do you expect something coming-up soon?
  • cknappcknapp Member Posts: 3
    What's your opinion?
    * Denver dealers tell me there will be no special factory incentives for the year end.
    * Also, though most have 10-15 Odysseys on the lot now, they say they don't intend to cut below their current prices (typically $1500-$2000 off EX sticker) -- they say they never need to cut steeply at year end.
    * 2006s will be rolling off the lines in early August. Price and features changes unknown.

SO, should I wait 2-3 months for a 2006 (I'm in no hurry), or do you think I'll get a better deal in that time frame on a 2005?

Can you tell us what you paid for your EXL-RES? I'm down in Austin, and might consider a drive up to Frank Kent since I have family in Ft. Worth we could visit.

We're going to pull the trigger on an EXL-RES soon, now just where to buy. Preference is to avoid King County and their tax rate.

Anyone have recent pricing for anywhere in state of WA, OR or ID for an EXL-RES, the price you paid before tax, lic, etc.

After reading these boards it looks like Seattle is the most expensive place in the country to buy a Honda for some reason.

I have seen a few people post $29,375-29,575 for the EXL-RES in TX and NY.

Thanks for your help and recommendations.

Bought an Odyssey EX (cloth) yesterday for $26000 not including DMV fees of $218. No sales tax in Oregon. Invoice is $25882.

I emailed 13 dealers within 100 miles to get quotes, then emailed them again with the lowest quote to see if anyone would beat it. 3 would match, and 2 would beat by $100 or less. Made an offer for a few hundred less to Beaverton Honda, the dealer with the lowest quote, who accepted. The process took a week. Perhaps I could have gotten a lower price, but it's a 4% profit to the dealer according to the cost number I got from Consumer Reports, and that seemed fair to me.

I was surprised that the initial quotes varied by almost $2000. Do internet sales managers really think that quoting MSRP minus a few hundred bucks will lead to a sale?

We had a good experience at the dealership--the staff was professional and helpful, and we weren't even offered add ons like coatings/sealants/extended warranty, which we didn't want anyhow. This is only our 2nd new car purchase, so there's not much to compare to, but this was definitely the more pleasant of the two experiences.

Not much tax savings if you leave King County. What would you save? 50.00?

I think most KC dealers would deduct that if you asked.

And I seriously doubt those prices. they make no sense.
  • dsrtrat2dsrtrat2 Member Posts: 223
If you trade regularly wait for the '06. If you drive 'em till they quit, and you can get a good price on the '05 go that way, unless there is something really different on the '06 that you have to have.
  • gizzanksgizzanks Member Posts: 13
    They don't make sense why?

I don't know if the prices are accurate, that is what people have posted they paid in TX and NY and other states like CA. What I am trying to do is get a better feel for what people are paying here in WA. I did see one person in WA shipped his Ody from Pocatello, ID. I have heard a lot of people are going to Idaho for cars, I'll make sure to get pricing from a few ID dealers before I purchase.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
The new Odysseys, especially the EX-DVD ones are very hot sellers in short supply. I can't understand (or believe) why a dealer would sell one for a hundred dollars over their invoice UNLESS it's a very different/depressed market where they are located.

Said another way...I don't believe some of these numbers we read in some of these forums. Maybe there was a trade they underallowed on..? I don't know.

All of the Idaho stores are pretty small and low volume. They sometimes quote low prices on cars they don't have and can't deliver.

Also, shipping costs and other pitfalls can seriously erode the money "saved".
  • gizzanksgizzanks Member Posts: 13
Well, I will let you know what I end up paying, you may be right. I was told the same thing about the Accord version I bought 5-6 years ago but I still paid $300 over invoice when the dealer was charging Adjusted Market Value.

Also, does anyone know if the 3.9% rate is nation wide for Ody's for 48 & 60 mos?
  • maulanamaulana Member Posts: 55
    dear Shperez,

Is that including tax and title and fees?
    What Edmunds has is this:
    Total with Options $32,610 MSRP
    $29,387 invoice
    $31,225 [tmv]

what is the tax rate where you are? If it is 7% it comes up to 31,444 if you are paying the invoice price. if tax is not included, then it is way too much.

We bougth EX at the end of May in King County for about $ 650 over invoice with some accessories. I did comparison shopping with as far as Yakima, Wenatchee,Olympia, Belligham etc. The cheapest price I got after some hard negotiations was the one I paid localy. Yakima was over a 1000 over invoce but they saved on taxes which in KC is 9.1% for cars !!!!!!!!!( .088 + 0.03 ). I briefly inquired about shipping the vehicle from other places, but the shipping and insurance costs were very high ( around 500 + ) Also selection at some smaller delears wasn't as good as the big ones. After we agreed on the price, the transaction went very smooth. The problems started next day when I noticed some problems with the paint job ( delear gave me the Honda Service History booklet, which said this Ody passed two inspections ). Good luck.

Hey there are some dealers that want to do high volume the dealer close to me OC CA wanted MSRP + for the EXL-RES but by sending out emails to dealers I quickly got the price down. Rock honda in Fontana talked to me on the phone I had got a quote from Riverside Honda for 300.00 over invoice. They said they would beat it if I liked one of the cars they had coming in on the friday before I was buying(memorial day weekend. They had a Sagebrush Pearl/Olive coming and I got it for 29,575.00 That's before I talked trade. Some of the dealers I taked to that found out I was getting a good deal said well we can't sell it for that we got people waiting to give us more. Thats cool with me but now I wish they'd stop calling me.

Looks like go got a pretty good price. I have been offering to pay $1000 over invoice, but this same dealer won't budge for less than $38,510.00 . The best I can find in this area is $37,237.00. I'm just starting though. I am determined to find a touring with DVD and Nav for $1000 over the invoice price, and I don't care where it is sold. I'd like it to be oregon, where i live but if not then I'll just take a vacation. I know this is a popular van but I don't understand why a dealer would not simply order me a van for this price- how much do they want to make to fill out the order paperwork- pay with cash, no trade- I just don't understand it, other than the dealers just don't need to.

Good luck on getting the Touring w/ Nav & Res for $1000 over invoice. Around DC Metro area, couldn't get any closer than about $1400. Seems to be pretty consistent within $100/$200 across the board. Though I did see on post in Rhode Island that was pretty close to invoice - though I'm doubtful of that number myself. Good luck!
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
No 3.9 financing on Odysseys. No need to subsidize the rate on cars in short supply. Still, rates are pretty good right now.

I've been shopping for an EX-L (no RES or NAV) and the best quote I've received so far from local dealers is $28,533. Sticker is $31,010. That's $2487 off Sticker and $584 over invoice. Now that I've made my deal the problem's going to be finding one w/o RES in the color we want Sage Brush/Ivory. We have no use for RES as our kids are grown and if I did want one, I'd buy an aftermarket add-on anyway.

The 32,000.00 sale price is including taxes 8.75%. The only thing that is not included is dmv fees.

Two weeks ago we purchased an EX in cloth from Kokomo Auto World in Kokomo, IN. We are in the Lafayette area and sent out many quote requests by email in about a 70-mile radius. Kokomo Auto World was the only dealer to give us their best price immediately (some of the other dealers were later willing to haggle/price match, but we were trying to avoid that unpleasant scenario). Kokomo Auto World's internet sales manager was very direct, professional, and didn't try to sell us anything we didn't ask for. It was our first new car buying experience and it couldn't have been easier. We spent only 1.5 hours in the dealership to pick up the car, and most of that time was spent on the financing paperwork. Total price paid: 25982.10 (car) + 1558.93 (6% sales tax) + 1.25 (state tire tax) = $27542.28. On a scale of 1-5, we give them a 5.

Can you please clarify. Valley Honda is in Aurora, IL. There is another Honda dealership in Naperville, IL as I know. Which one did you buy from? Was it brand new 2005 Odyssey EXL-RES. It seems like you got this van for atleast $ 1000 below invoice which is amazing. Also I'll greatly appreciate if you can give the breakdown of the total price. What was the price including destination but excluding taxes and other fees? Thanks.

Haven't bought yet - planning to do it week of the 27th. Doesn't look like there are many Twin Cities experiences out there!

It will be easier to understand and compare prices if everybody on this forum mentions the price including destination but excluding taxes and other fees. Taxes and fees usually varies from place to place and are non -negotiable.
This way we can compare apples to apples.

I would pay 1400 over invoice- I just don't understand why a dealer wouldn't simply fill out an order form for $1000? Not trying to be stubbort, jus hoped someone in the U.S. would do it. That woud give me an excuse to take a vacation to pick it up! Thanks for the response

I'm about to take the plunge and purchase a new Oddy as Baby #3 = MINIVAN!!

I'm both a Costco and AAA member and have inquired via both services and sent emails via Honda.com and Edmunds.com.

Basically, I've received 3-4 responses at or near $29886 plus tx, lic, doc fee...includes $515 destination fee. This is about $500 over invoice assuming invoice price is $29386.

Is this price pretty much the norm these days for southern california? It seems the only negotiable portion of the deal will be with accessories, warranties, etc.

Please advise if any one has seen better prices in the area for a new EXL-RES.

    Thanks for a great forum!!

Here is what I got so far:

    Prices MSRP Invoice Destination

    LX $24,995 $22,586 $515
    EX $27,995 $25,012 $515
    EXL $30,295 $27,034 $515
    EXL_ DVD $31,895 $28,472 $515
    EXL_R&N $34,095 $30,449 $515
    Touring $34,495 $30,628 $515
    Touring_RN$38,295 $34,043 $515

To be honest with you, I forgot where I got it from. Somewhere from the internet, vaguely remember that it was a realiable site. Personally, I am planning to buy an EXL w/ or w/o DVD.

    Good luck,

Out of curiosity, are you waiting until the 27th to help your negotiations with a dealer trying to get some additional deals before the close of the month? I am planning the timing of my purchase so am interested in what others are doing.

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. It seems like you paid $100 over invoice, which is really a great deal. It is also good to know that there are no other administration or dealer fees, etc., that some other dealers would charge. I happened to call them yestarday and they seem to willing to win my business. One of the options that I was given is to buy a EX-L and have a DVD player installed. I am wondering if that would be good idea or not. I will post another message just to get feedback on that. But, once again, thank you for your feedback!
  • mich_chowmich_chow Member Posts: 58
While shopping around for an EX-L with DVD (or RES), I was given an option by a Honda dealer to purchase an EX-L, and have the RES installed by the dealer. They said that the DVD they would be installing will be a portable one plus will have a larger screen (larger than 9" that comes with factory installed RES). Can anyone comment on this? Would this be a good idea or is this not. By the way, the dealer would charge about $2,000 to install the DVD. (I could probably haggle to bring it a few hundred down :) ). Thanks.
  • gizzanksgizzanks Member Posts: 13
I was going to do this but after talking with a friend who purchased an EXL-RES I decided to go for the factory install for a few reasons.

    - There are varying levels of quality on the aftermarket systems.
    - There are even more varying levels of quality of installers for the aftermarket systems.
    - The Odyssey has side curtain airbags in the headliner, my concern was some 17 year kid installing the system would run a wire over where the airbags deploy and that would be bad in an accident.
    - The factory install is cleaner and tends to have a higher resale. Many of the aftermarket systems install the DVD player in places that are not as accessible, or prone to getting wet, stepped on or spilled on.
    - The screen on the factory unit doesn't block rear view as much as some of the aftermarket ones do.
    - There may be more audio options with the factory one (thru headphones, thru radio, etc)
    - The DVD is covered by factory warranty and extended if you buy the hondacare one.

    - I would recommend if you do do aftermarket not to go through the dealer but to a respected shop, look at their work and then decide. Some of the big shops have done a lot of these. $2000 for a 3rd party seems WAY high. Our Fry's shop has them installed for $600-800 for one with a decent screen. Portable DVD players are only few hundred dollars now so they are really over charging unless they are doing something creative.

    - I would check out the video forum here for more info.
