I am thinking about either buying a new 2005 Honda Odyseey EX or a 2002 certified pre-owned. From all what I heard, buying certified pre-owned can save money because it avoid the initial depreciation. But when I compare the price I start questioning that belief.
(1) I dealership quoted me $26K for a new car. (Including destination fee.)
(2) In my area there are 10 certified pre-owned. All are about the same: average 3-year old, mileage 35K; priced at $21K. (I assume I can negotiate the price down a little but don't know how much.)
As you can see, buying a certified pre-owned saves only about $6K. But I will get a 3 years old, 35K miles car.
I don't know if in the case of Honda Odyssey, buying certified pre-owned is a good idea. Maybe buying new makes better sense.
Your opinions will be much appreciated!!
Tony
I think buying a certified used CAN be a great way of saving some money on a car, especially for cars that depreciate in value considerably during the first 2-4 years. We also thought about getting a 1-2 year old Odyssey. In the end, I decided against it for a couple of reasons:
*Hondas simply keep their value too well (it's a problem, right?!!). :-) in other words, you don't save very much for getting a used vehicle.
*the interest rate negates some of the difference. Some of us have been able to get pretty good rates for a new car, and the used rates are always higher. Even a 1% difference is about a 500$ difference, so that gap is closed.
*I like some of the changes on the new Odyssey, especially with respect to the additional safety featured, the 3cylinder option, and most importantly for us, the split and store third row, which we use all the time. I can't quite explain it, but the design of the new ones just feel more contemporary to me.
At the end of the days, these are great minivans, and i don't think you can go wrong either way. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy it and it is a great car for you and the family.

The only possible exception is if you can get a used vehicle from a private seller. As a general rule, you'll get it cheaper from the private seller and may be able to get the price down low enough where it does make sense to buy used. Of course this has it's own risks(non-certified, is there anytihng wrong with the car, etc), but I personally think they are not all that high.
For me - I'm looking at a Sienna or Ody. I'll buy new pretty much for all of the reason tpan says.
Nissan QUEST S - on the road price $ 23, 000 (because of the Nissan's rebates and below invoice price bargaining)
v/s
Honda Odyssey EX - on road $ 28,000
Is the Odyssey worth that extra $5000.0 (i.e ~ 20 % price difference). I personally donot like to center console in the Odyssey. But in terms of driving and car exterior, it is not bad. As much as Honda looks good, it is difficult to justify the extra $5000.0
That's wonderful news. Congratulations on the decision, and hope you are pleased with the car. We've had ours for a couple of weeks, and couldn't be happier with the van.

* Denver dealers tell me there will be no special factory incentives for the year end.
* Also, though most have 10-15 Odysseys on the lot now, they say they don't intend to cut below their current prices (typically $1500-$2000 off EX sticker) -- they say they never need to cut steeply at year end.
* 2006s will be rolling off the lines in early August. Price and features changes unknown.
SO, should I wait 2-3 months for a 2006 (I'm in no hurry), or do you think I'll get a better deal in that time frame on a 2005?
Thank you for all you inputs.
Can you tell us what you paid for your EXL-RES? I'm down in Austin, and might consider a drive up to Frank Kent since I have family in Ft. Worth we could visit.
Anyone have recent pricing for anywhere in state of WA, OR or ID for an EXL-RES, the price you paid before tax, lic, etc.
After reading these boards it looks like Seattle is the most expensive place in the country to buy a Honda for some reason.
I have seen a few people post $29,375-29,575 for the EXL-RES in TX and NY.
Thanks for your help and recommendations.
I emailed 13 dealers within 100 miles to get quotes, then emailed them again with the lowest quote to see if anyone would beat it. 3 would match, and 2 would beat by $100 or less. Made an offer for a few hundred less to Beaverton Honda, the dealer with the lowest quote, who accepted. The process took a week. Perhaps I could have gotten a lower price, but it's a 4% profit to the dealer according to the cost number I got from Consumer Reports, and that seemed fair to me.
I was surprised that the initial quotes varied by almost $2000. Do internet sales managers really think that quoting MSRP minus a few hundred bucks will lead to a sale?
We had a good experience at the dealership--the staff was professional and helpful, and we weren't even offered add ons like coatings/sealants/extended warranty, which we didn't want anyhow. This is only our 2nd new car purchase, so there's not much to compare to, but this was definitely the more pleasant of the two experiences.
Please if u can give the break up of what u paid......
and just to double check u got EXL with RES...
i appreciate ur response......
Thanks

I think most KC dealers would deduct that if you asked.
And I seriously doubt those prices. they make no sense.
I don't know if the prices are accurate, that is what people have posted they paid in TX and NY and other states like CA. What I am trying to do is get a better feel for what people are paying here in WA. I did see one person in WA shipped his Ody from Pocatello, ID. I have heard a lot of people are going to Idaho for cars, I'll make sure to get pricing from a few ID dealers before I purchase.
Said another way...I don't believe some of these numbers we read in some of these forums. Maybe there was a trade they underallowed on..? I don't know.
All of the Idaho stores are pretty small and low volume. They sometimes quote low prices on cars they don't have and can't deliver.
Also, shipping costs and other pitfalls can seriously erode the money "saved".
Also, does anyone know if the 3.9% rate is nation wide for Ody's for 48 & 60 mos?
Is that including tax and title and fees?
What Edmunds has is this:
Total with Options $32,610 MSRP
$29,387 invoice
$31,225 [tmv]
what is the tax rate where you are? If it is 7% it comes up to 31,444 if you are paying the invoice price. if tax is not included, then it is way too much.
I am shopping for a 2005 Odyssey EX-L RES. Can anyone please tell me if they had a recent bying experience, and how much was paid. Any other information related to Indiana would be greately appreciated. Thanks in advance.
should any ony consider that I should buy a Demo verson with a 1000 mile or stick with a brand new one, also got quotted on a brand new one EXL with N&R is 33810.00 on nearby dealer and another one @32900.00 about 3 hrs away.
should I negociate more or its a Good price on a new one or a demo one. I would apreciate if some one replies to this message...
Thank you
Thank you for your response.
Just wanted to ask you where did you end up buying ur vehicle??...I also live in Bergen county,NJ. Please reply.
Thanks in advance
Can you please clarify. Valley Honda is in Aurora, IL. There is another Honda dealership in Naperville, IL as I know. Which one did you buy from? Was it brand new 2005 Odyssey EXL-RES. It seems like you got this van for atleast $ 1000 below invoice which is amazing. Also I'll greatly appreciate if you can give the breakdown of the total price. What was the price including destination but excluding taxes and other fees? Thanks.
This way we can compare apples to apples.
I'm both a Costco and AAA member and have inquired via both services and sent emails via Honda.com and Edmunds.com.
Basically, I've received 3-4 responses at or near $29886 plus tx, lic, doc fee...includes $515 destination fee. This is about $500 over invoice assuming invoice price is $29386.
Is this price pretty much the norm these days for southern california? It seems the only negotiable portion of the deal will be with accessories, warranties, etc.
Please advise if any one has seen better prices in the area for a new EXL-RES.
Thanks for a great forum!!
Prices MSRP Invoice Destination
LX $24,995 $22,586 $515
EX $27,995 $25,012 $515
EXL $30,295 $27,034 $515
EXL_ DVD $31,895 $28,472 $515
EXL_R&N $34,095 $30,449 $515
Touring $34,495 $30,628 $515
Touring_RN$38,295 $34,043 $515
To be honest with you, I forgot where I got it from. Somewhere from the internet, vaguely remember that it was a realiable site. Personally, I am planning to buy an EXL w/ or w/o DVD.
Good luck,
Out of curiosity, are you waiting until the 27th to help your negotiations with a dealer trying to get some additional deals before the close of the month? I am planning the timing of my purchase so am interested in what others are doing.
Thanks for your reply. It seems like you paid $100 over invoice, which is really a great deal. It is also good to know that there are no other administration or dealer fees, etc., that some other dealers would charge. I happened to call them yestarday and they seem to willing to win my business. One of the options that I was given is to buy a EX-L and have a DVD player installed. I am wondering if that would be good idea or not. I will post another message just to get feedback on that. But, once again, thank you for your feedback!
- There are varying levels of quality on the aftermarket systems.
- There are even more varying levels of quality of installers for the aftermarket systems.
- The Odyssey has side curtain airbags in the headliner, my concern was some 17 year kid installing the system would run a wire over where the airbags deploy and that would be bad in an accident.
- The factory install is cleaner and tends to have a higher resale. Many of the aftermarket systems install the DVD player in places that are not as accessible, or prone to getting wet, stepped on or spilled on.
- The screen on the factory unit doesn't block rear view as much as some of the aftermarket ones do.
- There may be more audio options with the factory one (thru headphones, thru radio, etc)
- The DVD is covered by factory warranty and extended if you buy the hondacare one.
- I would recommend if you do do aftermarket not to go through the dealer but to a respected shop, look at their work and then decide. Some of the big shops have done a lot of these. $2000 for a 3rd party seems WAY high. Our Fry's shop has them installed for $600-800 for one with a decent screen. Portable DVD players are only few hundred dollars now so they are really over charging unless they are doing something creative.
- I would check out the video forum here for more info.
