The changer is placed under the driver seat. The mounting kit bolts directly to the seat rails. You can view the installation instructions at HandA.com. Note that you can't install the Honda subwoofer and the CD changer in a NAV EX. You would have to go with the in-dash changer if you also want the sub (which sounds great!)

First part is correct -- you can install the changer under the Driver's seat, but then you can't add the subwoofer. Unfortunately, the in dash-changer is NOT an option with the NAVI. So you will have to decide if you want the changer or a subwoofer...
We put a deposit on a BEIGE 2002 ODY EX in July 01 . The dealer (O"Donnell in Md. ) called advising that my Granite Green Ody is in ! I was so upset after waiting so long. I gave them an ear full- and was told that they can get me the beige in December 01. Bummer. In the meantime they offered to not charge me the Freight Charge of $440 for my inconvenience. What do you think? Is this the best they can do?
Don't be silly. Cancel your deposit and buy the right color. If they think they will keep the deposit on such a popular car, they have another thing coming. Or you could suggest they dealer trade with the dealership that has the right car. I'm sure something can be worked out. Keep one thing in mind. The more of their time you waste, the more likely you will get your way.
I, personally, would accept that offer- but Dec. 1? You gotta be kidding. That's way too long for them to find you your right color. Most dealerships are actually owned by one single guy, and he can trade cars within his dealership network- just as long as the managers at the respective dealerships get in contact with each other to work it out. Seems to me as if your dealer doesn't even want to bother.
Love the Van. Our 2000 Odyssey is holding up well after 48K miles. Two minor concerns.
1. Wanted to install a coathanger rail between the hooks for a long trip. Didn't really have much on them when a hook fell out. Seemed not to be quite rugged enough.
2. Cupholder flap on the flip down tray fell out. Looks like the rubber like material has aged and cracked. Suppose I can get another flap without an whole new tray?
Other than that when the time comes we will defiantly get another.
Sorry to hear about your problems with your Ody order. Have you spoke to Carl Toby? He is the GM and a decent guy...maybe he can offer some help. Do you have a copy of your 'Buyers Order'? This should clearly spell out your color selection.
If all else fails, December is not out of line for Ody deliveries, as some would have you believe. Honda is now their annual fall/winter slowdown and cut back mode. We always get fewer Odys during the fall/winter months than during the rest of the year.
As far as the freight is concerned, if you take the $440, you will still have a color that you didn't want. You will remember the color EVERYTIME you go to your driveway, but you'll forget the $440 after the first month.
Odysseys represent a decent profit margin to the dealership. Unlike the Civic or Accord or heaven forbid..the Passport. We dont have to carry them on our inventory like we do the other vehicles.
Let me give you an example. Since 1999, when the new Odyssey became available and totally raised the bar for ALL minivan manufacturers, we have not had ONE single Odyssey available that has not been pre-sold. We usually have 15-25 per month too. A dealership that gets in 7-10 per month is not going to just sell these at MSRP. They are going to load them up, either with accessories or ADM. It's how they operate, I've seen it time and again. So, to DX (dealer exchange) a Odyssey, just doesn't happen.
I have just read some messages that alluded to a new Honda "MDX". I have been looking at the Odyssey because the Acura MDX is out of our price range, but I need more space and seats than I currently have in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Does anyone know anything about this new Honda and when it will be out? I really like the size and look of the MDX. If I do go with the Odyssey, how is it in the snow?
"The reports coming in indicate that this replacement model will be 8 inches longer than the MDX upon which it is based, and will reportedly feature seating for up to 8 passengers. If true, this would probably be the '200-inch Tahoe-fighter' SUV that Honda was rumoured (way back in 1997) to be developing."
Thank you both for your information. I know that the Odyssey is a great van, but I guess the one holdback I have is that I have to either pay MSRP or MSRP plus for it because of the demand. Reminds me of the time the Mazda Miata's came out. I'll probably have to just hold my stomach in and go for it one of these days. One consolation is that I will be in very good company
Does anyone have the 800# for American Honda; we have a question for them, but it's not an easy # to find (haven't called the dealer -- too early here).
deuter_boss: Try to get over your hang up of having to pay MSRP. Who cares what they call it... MSRP, invoice, whatever. How does the price you will have to pay for the Odyssey compare to the price you will have to pay for a comparable van from a different manufacturer? That's what you should be thinking about. What if MSRP on the Odyssey was $15,000? Would you still have a problem paying $15,000 because that was the MSRP? It's all about the value you get for the money you spend.
diploid: Word has it that once the Alabama plant is at full Odyssey production, the plant in Ontario that currently makes Odysseys will switch to a different vehicle. I doubt there will be a big increase, if any, in Odysseys made if this is in fact true.
I will admit the 2000 Odyssey is a people mover. It has the room and comfort that you can't ask foir in aany other van. it did have some quality issues and the recall on the ruber seal for the sliding doors. But it drove thru 120 degree heat and sand storms and rain in AZ and CA. But with me buying a travel trailer the Odyssey just can't hang. My quality of life has improved buy getting the Silverado Extended Cab with the 4.8 and tow package. The kids love it. I can take them to my hunting spots without worrying that the bottom will scrap. Tow the trailer for family outings its great. Can't say I miss the Odyssey. Maybe the room ,but the siverado seats 6, bench seat in front. To bad the Odyssey can't tow nothing more than a tent trailer. I paid cash for the Odyssey and they gave me 22k for it. With the Chevy rebates I paid 22.5k for the Silverado. What a deal. Happy has a lark.
My husband and I are trying to decide between the EX and the LX version of the 2002. A concern about the EX is the sliding doors - I would like to know if people like them and if they have any safety issues. Also how is the LX for a short person - I'm only 5 feet and am wondering if the EX would be better because of its power seat. Thanks in advance for any advice!
We have 2001 EX with 24,000 miles and have not had ONE problem with our sliding doors. They have never stuck and I can only remember one time when we have tested the reverse mechanism when I was standing outside the van and securing my daughter's seatbelt. She reached back and pulled the door handle and the door began to close. It bumped me slightly and reversed as it should. We LOVE them and highly recommend them.
We just moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from Cleveland, Ohio. 2200+ miles, 4 days driving with me, wife, 2 daughters (10 and 11), and a rather large collie mix. The Ody was great!!!
I bought an engine block heater online, and it didn't come with instructions (and according to handa.com it wasn't supposed to). Anyone know how this thing installs???? I don't have a clue.
Hi dave84: I know what you're saying.. From what I've read in the posts, the Odyssey is a very well put together van. And I truly believe the saying you get what you pay for. I just have to undo some years of "don't buy anything at regular price" conditioning. Appreciate the reality check. Hopefully one of these days, you'll see my post with the subject header reading: We got the van!
We've had our 2002 EX for a little over a month. No problem so far with the power sliding doors. I personally like the power sliding doors and have had no safety issues with them. We don't have toddlers getting in and out of the van, so I can't really speak to that.
A friend of ours is 5'4" tall and tried test driving an LX. She couldn't get the seat positioned to her liking. So they went and bought a Sienna. I told her she should have tried the EX, but they didn't want to pay the extra $$$.
I just want to let you know that hitting the parking stop can be very DANGEROUS! I hit one a few weeks ago and did not think much of it. The front of the car hit under the bumper. A few days later we were on the highway when a terrible sound came from the front of the car. The plastic wheel well liner (mud guard) had separated from the car and wrapped around the wheel while driving. When I went to the dealer to have it repaired I was told that the clips and bolts that hold all 3 plastic pieces (one under the front of the car and one for each wheel well) are low to the ground and when you hit a cement parking stop it breaks these off and the plastic pieces become loose. I was shocked and very concerned. I think it is a design flaw that is potentially dangerous. I suggest that you take a look at these pieces under the car and if you ever hit another parking stop, inspect them again to see if any pieces are missing or loose. Get it repaired as soon as possible before it happens on the highway, a very scary experience!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Those must have been really tall parking stops because where I am, the bottom of that plastic piece still has a couple of inches of clearance to spare. Even with the disassembly of my bumper (requiring removal of those clips), the fasteners are still tight and undamaged. Next time, maybe you should ease in your Ody to the stop rather than letting your car revound from it.
I posted a question on this last week. I think this is a serious design flaw with the Odyssey. Honda should have warned us about this.
I notice that when I park my 2000 EX Odyssey that I hit the parking stop, with something underneath the car, with a bad grinding sound. On all the other cars I have owned, and I have owned and driven a number of cars, the front tire hits first. So I never had a problem. This also happens when there is a curb in front and I park. The underneath part then hits the curb.
Even though I pull forward very slowly it makes a bad sound. So I have to just be very careful, I guess, and not pull forward to were I would usually do, which is very hard to judge. I think most drivers would have this problem.
I agree it should not be that way. I hope I have not damaged anything. I do have mud guards, but they are not the same as wheel well liners. That is a seperate option. So I hope I do not have the same problem you had, even though I have mud guards.
Does anyone know if I should have the car checked over to see if I have damaged anything? Are there others out there that have had problems and do they have serious problems, with just the mud guards installed, and not the wheel well liners?
I was thinking the same thing and was planing on testing it myself. Maybe everyone, that is going to buy an Odyssey, bought one and also every ones questions have been answered by this board. So there is nothing more to say.
What has happened to the resale value for used Odysseys? We are thinking of trading in our 2000 EX (15K miles, perfect condition) for a 2002 EX-L mostly for the factory leather. Of course the extra power/5 speed/redesigned shifter/intermittent rear wiper/etc. would all be welcome. When shopping at the dealers, they cry poverty and then only offer $21,500 as a trade-in. That's to be expected, but I have only had one response in two weeks to my newspaper/web ads. And that was from a 7-11 clerk ( I could hear him selling lottery tickets in the background when he called) who wanted me to drive the car to him so he could take a look at it!! Are the days of everyone scrambling for ANY Odyssey over?
Well, car sales fell something like 1.5% in September I heard, and the 0% financing is hurting used car sales. Economy worries are probably continuing to slow sales on big ticket items. Steve Host Vans, SUVs and Aftermarket & Accessories Message Boards
In August the dealer where I eventually bought my 02 from wanted to sell me a 99LX for $23,500. I didn't take it but someone else did later the same day.
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
How is it installed, and where can I buy one at a discount? Does the dealer need to install it? I am not good at "sewing". What is a good price to install?
I am also in the process of trading in my 2000EX with aftermarket leather and Honda security system. My Ody only has about 9,000 miles and is in perfect condition. The dealer offered my $24K trade in, and gauranteed that trade in price until the 2002 ODY EXL Nav arrived 8 weeks later.
Another dealer offered my $25K in NJ but was not willing to gaurantee that price when the new vehicle arrived so I went with the sure thing.
If you look on Yahoo these vehicles are being listed for $27K - $29K but that also includes dealer prep plus extended warranty. Also by trading in you only pay sales tax on the difference between the two vehicles prices. So I end up saving about another $1,500 in sales tax due to trading in.
I think the demand is still strong for the Odyssey since there is still quite a long wait for the new ones.
Dealer's want between $3000 and $4,000 difference between trade in they pay and retail at which they will sell so there is same profit as with a new Odyssey. Here is the link to Edmund's TMV for 2000 Odyssey EX:
Edmunds does not have invoice pricing for a NEW 2002 Odyssey EX, but invoice price for a 2001 Odyssey EX was $23,490. A new car dealer is not going to pay more for an older, used vehicle than he needs to pay to get a brand new one that is one or 2 model years newer.
"A new car dealer is not going to pay more for an older, used vehicle than he needs to pay to get a brand new one that is one or 2 model years newer."
Now normally this would seem so obvious that you wouldn't even think about saying it. The lunacy that is getting an Odyssey is doing awfully funny things with dealer math, though. While you are probably correct that a dealer won't pay more for a used vehicle than he can get the new one for, he'll pay pretty close to that for a nice used Odyssey for the simple reason that someone out there will then pay him near new retail for the used one simply because it is there sitting on his lot and available. That's what happened with the 99 we passed on. We weren't in a hurry and were willing to wait for our 02 but someone gobbled that 99LX for $23K+ right up.
Now I like the Odyssey a LOT but this is bordering on insane. I'm glad I got the Ody but before I'd pay that kind of money on a used one I'd bite the bullet, buy a Grand Caravan and hope I got one of the good ones.
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
I am not sure who uses Edmunds TMV but I can tell you that every dealer I went to always referred to the Blue Book Value.
From Yahoo I obtained 2 numbers the first is a Trade in value which is $23,455 and the second is the retail value which is $28,570.
I just did a search on Yahoo in the classfied section for a 2000 Odyssey. It yileded 25 results. Unfortunately it doesn't differentiate between LX/EX models. Here is a current listing on Yahoo sorted in descending price order:

It appears Ody prices are becoming more reasonable, at least here in the midwest... I just agreed to purchase an 02 EX RRP for $700 under MSRP in the Cleveland area. I also added the Honda subwoofer on for $350. Total price: $26, 910, which includes a $70.50 doc fee, but not sales tax (I have to pay in MI). This car will be in on Monday. I made a request by email on Wed, and I was called a few hours later by the internet sales mgr. I was pleasantly surprised at the price, and availability of the new color. I was prepared to pay MSRP in MI, and had been on a list since early August. Luckily, I decided to check a few more dealers out (on the web) in Cleveland since I will be there anyway to visit family in a couple of weeks. My local dealer wouldn't match the price. There loss, my gain.
I hope the Red Rock color is nice, haven't seen one yet. Has anyone had the subwoofer instilled and care to comment?
Some thoughts on Honda quality vs DC... I have owned 2 CRXs and an Accord (still have 95 EX), and Honda is up there, but not invincible. My Accord just had the starter go out at 70,000 miles, now at 72,000 the driver's side window won't go down all the way. Overall, they hold up well. After test driving an 01 T & C, brand new off the lot with a non-functioning speedometer, I dropped it from consideration. Have friends with DC tranny problems too. Too bad, because I really like the new look on DC vans.
Sorry for anyone who is paying over MSRP... hold out if you can since I believe with the economy still in a down trend and O% financing on domestics, prices nationally will come down. Check the internet and wait til the end of month when dealers want to close more deals.
I see that Honda is offering its brand new in-Vehicle Entertainment System, i-VES, for 99 and later Odysseys.
Includes overhead high-resolution TFT-LCD screen and VHS player. They say when installed, it looks OEM, and from the picture it does. Includes wireless headphones and a Subwoofer.
Well, I took the plunge and put down my deposit on a SS Odyssey LX at MSRP. The Internet guy had one left in his Nov allocation, just what I wanted! 3-4 weeks 'til delivery! I used a version of the "Blast fax" method detailed in the advice section of this website. I called and got names and fax numbers for all seven area dealers (metro Phoenix) and faxed them a price request for them to itemize price, tax, and all the assorted fees they come up with. And of course the drive-out price. I got 5 out of 7 back after 3 days and a few follow-up calls. Several dealers "looked" like MSRP, but their faxes alluded to packages or "markup subject to availability" (a real quote) so I went with the lowest out-the-door price, no packages, a total of 27,293. (our 7.8 percent tax is the killer). Now stay tuned to see if this all comes through. Thanks a million to all the contributors to this site. I probably wouldn't have had the guts to go through with all this and might have ended up with an inferior van. vikki26
What is the diff between the EX and LX? We are wanting the entertainment package, no leather or NAV system. Also...are MSRPs the same all across the US? Meaning would I pay the same here in CO as I would on the east coast? (provided the dealers sell at MSRP). And finally...anyone know if Honda is offering any type of military discounts? I know some dealerships are doing this, but since Honda Odysseys are in such high demand it probably doesn't apply to them. Thanks for the help!
I don't know if this has been mentioned here before, if so, my apologies...
Stopped by a Honda dealer last week to see if any new CRV brochures had arrived (they haven't). While I was there I noticed the new '02 Odyssey, and several left over '01 Odysseys—one of which had no middle or third row seats!
Unlike all the other Odysseys there, the middle and rear seats were not mentioned on the window sticker. So, apparently Honda also markets a version of the Odyssey for people not interested in middle or rear seats. Other than the lack of seats, it's identical to an LX trim model. What caught my eye was that it stickered a bit over $20K. Also, the rear area was fully carpeted and came with a huge rear carpet mat too.
I vaguely remember seeing a 99 Odyssey Cargo Van at a dealership north of Boston. It suprised me as it was the only one on the lot. IIRC from reading here, Honda was making 1 per dealership for Parts Dept use. Anyone else remember that?
I even thought there was someone who posted here who bought one and was trying to buy more seats.
Edmonds has place where they list all the new cars and the differences between the various models in great detail. Also I think the Honda site would have that. http://www.honda.com
MSRP is the same all over the US as the manufacturers have standardized the shipping costs many years ago. Doubt very much if you will find a military discount, but I guess it is possible and up to the individual dealer.
I notice that a number of restaurants are giving discounts on , is it Veterans day on 11 Nov, to the military people. Don't have my calender handy. The 11 Nov comes from when world war I ended so it must be 11 Nov. You could go to an auto dealer on that day and ask them. The most decorated solder of World War I was named Douglas McArthur. He did very well in World War II also.
Thanks for all the info on '00 prices, but I came across an ad today from a private party for a '01 Silver EX with the cd/cassette and cargo liner, 8,200 miles , for $24,900 - firm. KBB , nor anywhere else I can find on line, provides information on '01 prices. KBB says there is insufficient data on '01's to provide trade in/retail prices. Any thoughts on whther this may be a good deal?
I have been watching prices for used Odys for a few months, and 24900 for an '01 EX with 8200 miles is a very good deal -- at least relative to other deals. The dealers are selling used EX's for more than that (I can't figure out who's buying them, but somebody must be) as are most private parties. Do a search in your area on Autotrader.com and you will see for yourself.
Of course, you will need to check out the vehicle's history. There was a '01 EX with leather and TV/VCP in my local paper for around 26k, but when i called i learned that it had been in an accident and the person on the other end didn't seem willing to provide a lot of details, so i didn't even bother to go look.
I was interested in which dealer (central Jersey, right?) you used when you traded in your Ody. I have talked with several dealers (Clinton, Madison, Joyce) and they either won't give a decent trade for my 2000 EX, or say that they will now but won't guarantee the deal 2-3 months down the road when the new 2002 arrives. Who did you use?
Also, you said that your previous Ody had aftermarket leather. That is another option for us - one of the main reasons for the new van is to get the factory leather. We were hesitant to get it installed in our 2000, but if the price is right we may do that rather than trade up to a 2002. Was yours done by Classic Soft Trim or Katzkin? I called the local CST dealer in Woodridge NJ and he quoted me $1499 for the complete job (including leather 3rd seat). Any advice/opinion on the aftermarket route?
I have the Classic Soft Trims leather in our 01 EX for just over a year and it still looks like new. We don't have any kids but do a lot of city driving which means in and out of the van all the time. There is no sign of wear yet. Not only are all the seats, headrests leather but they also do the door panels too. We also got the heated seats while we were at it for another $350, and they have hi/lo settings. If you didn't know that Odysseys didn't have leather you would never tell the difference. We have the gray or what ever they call it as it is a perfect match for the gray plastic trim around the bottom of the seats. When I got my Honda my dealer used the Katzkin and I thought it was cheap looking. I told him I wanted the Classic and after they got it back they decided to switch and no longer use the Katzkin. I haven't heard of anybody here who likes the Katzkin. As far as price not to bad.

If you look on Yahoo these vehicles are being listed for $27K - $29K but that also includes dealer prep plus extended warranty. Also by trading in you only pay sales tax on the difference between the two vehicles prices. So I end up saving about another $1,500 in sales tax due to trading in.
I think the demand is still strong for the Odyssey since there is still quite a long wait for the new ones.
Cant wait until the new one arrives.

Includes overhead high-resolution TFT-LCD screen and VHS player. They say when installed, it looks OEM, and from the picture it does. Includes wireless headphones and a Subwoofer.
It says to see your Local Dealer or http://www.honda.com for More Details.

I even thought there was someone who posted here who bought one and was trying to buy more seats.
KBB , nor anywhere else I can find on line, provides information on '01 prices. KBB says there is insufficient data on '01's to provide trade in/retail prices. Any thoughts on whther this may be a good deal?
Of course, you will need to check out the vehicle's history. There was a '01 EX with leather and TV/VCP in my local paper for around 26k, but when i called i learned that it had been in an accident and the person on the other end didn't seem willing to provide a lot of details, so i didn't even bother to go look.
good luck.
Thanks for your help.
