I see you say the dealer is offering a $24000 trade in for your 2000 EX Odyssey.

I have to wonder how the dealers can do this. I see that the sticker price of my 2000 Odyssey with Destination charges was $26,000 + $440=$26,440

That is also the price most of us payed. So you have a two year old vehicle which has lost 9.23%, in 2 years, in depreciation. That has got to be some kind of record. It cost the dealer less then $24,000 to purchase your vehicle new.

If you are paying MSRP for the 2002, that seems to be one hell of a deal.

Can someone explain this, "seems too good to be true", deal to me? I think for that kind of deal maybe we should all trade in our 2000 models for a 2002.

Sorry, I did mean below MSRP and it was Burne Honda (Mike C)- Only had a $50 deposit for my 2002. Best vehicle I have ever owned.

Thats not out of line. We had a guy trade in his 99 EX with about 35000 miles on it form his lease. He had 2,000 positive equity and rolled it into the 2002 lease. His payments went up 20 per month...he was definately a happy camper!

Love the new 2002. Five of us ranging from 5'6" to 6' took a 4 day trip of 1200 miles and the van was a delight to ride in and sightsee from. The offroad bumpy 2 miles were fine, although the bushes scraping the side had me gasping (wife doesn't get to drive offroad anymore). We only filled the back well and maybe half the seat height with our luggage, quite an improvement from a similar trip packed to the roof in a Windstar years ago. That left plenty of room for the huge amounts of stuff bought at the outlet stores on the way home. Mileage was a bit lower than expected, only around 21, but then the van has only 1500 miles now after the trip. Leg room was a bit short, but with the 5th person in the center of the bench is was not really much of a problem.

Back at home, the toddler loves the van. She runs around and sits in all the seats, sometimes it's hard to get her out. Neighbors keep stopping by to check it out. One month later we are still very happy with our purchase.

I received my 2002 Red Rock Peal EX-L-Res this weekend. This car is spectacular. Waiting for the RRP was worth it. The color is so much better in person than anything I've seen in a brochure or on the internet. The RES is great. The stereo is great for a factory stereo. I drove it 175 miles today loaded with stuff and people and it was a dream. That engine got me up steep grades seemlessly.

I got my car from Nora Kelly (949-493-9300) at Wesloh Honda in San Juan Capistrano. The require a $500 refundable deposit, but they'll sell it to you at MSRP. I would definitely recommend this dealership, particularly Nora Kelly, a no pressure sales person that looks out for you.

Regarding the Honda Care Warranty, I going to get it from Tracy at Alton Blakely Honda in Kentucky. I've talked to her and she's sending me the application. I think it would be hard to beat their price.

I picked up my GG EX-L with DVD on Oct. 5. I bought it at Academy Honda in Old Bridge. (Kurt Steger was my salesman, real nice guy.) I put down a $500 deposit last month. I paid MSRP and they didn't add anything extra on to it. I orded a protection plan for $400. (which includes the interior and exterior) I also got the extended warranty for $950.
I ordered it without seeing what "fern" leather looked like, (I was very concerned about green leather) but it is a dark gray. I am not too excited about the orange taillights in the 2002.
They had 2 granite green 2001 for sale on the lot. They also had a white 2002 EX-L with DVD, a silver EX, and a white Lx. I don't know for sure if the 2002 vans were sold, but they had these vans on the sales lot and my van was kept in a separate storage area until I picked it up. (which if those vans were sold I don't think they would have been on the sales lot.)
I really like the van so far (I had a '98 Dodge Caravan)except for a few things I have never seen mentioned on this board:
-I don't like the folding tray between the front seats. I wish they offered a center console like T&C and Sienna.
    - I also don't like how low the power adapter is in the front, practically on the floor. (very inconvient for the cell phone charger)
Unfortunately the headphones for the dvd are too big for my kids (ages 1 & 4)I am trying to see if I can add small speakers (like for a computer) and plug them into the back ports, and then I guess I will need to convert them to a car plug outlet.
I honestly did like the looks of the Sienna better, but I went with the Honda because it is bigger. However I think I am starting to like the Odyssey better!! and I love the granite green color (really a dark gray).

Our van is an EX-2001 with 17,000 mi. on it. We have a transmission problem and other issues at this time. I am not the expert regarding the transmission though I could repeat the problem if anyone wants to discuss the torque converter noise issue. I do have concerns that I would like to know more about. The paint seems to have "smudged" in two places. Apparently something touched the very back bumper some time ago and a "smudge" appeared and now the same thing has happened to the front, near the license plate on the bumper. Has anyone else noticed a problem with the paint? A second question. Should the clock and glove compartments have lights, i.e. can you see your clock at night? If so, mine are not working.
I've also had problems with the gas tank release, I have to pull it three times to get the door to open.

    Thank you for your help.

    Thanks, mtempel1 etal.

Picked up the SS EX-LRES tonight. By the way, the baby and van both came today. Now, our family has plenty of room!

If anybody is shopping in N.VA for the Ody, email me and I can give you a rundown on our experience at Richmond Honda. Of all the dealers from Woodbridge to Richmond, I can say that they kept their word on every detail of our agreement. Summary: MSRP + 975 'options' + 7/100/0 Honda Care warranty for 797, 89 doc fee, total out the door a bit more than 32,000. Provided financing for 6.04%, 60 months.

We put 16K miles on our '01 GG EX and have had a great experience with it so far. Only repair was for a hairline crack in the rear spoiler, which the dealer noticed during servicing and replaced (under warranty). The power doors are great and have worked fine--the one big worry, we were all set to buy an LX out of fear they would break--and all the room inside is perfect for long trips as well as hauling the family around town. Only real gripe has been the relatively low gas mileage, but most of the driving has been around town, stop-and-go stuff. We were going to buy some optional equip. for the van but decided to use the money to buy the 7/100/0 HondaCare warranty (from Tracy Dalton at Alton Blakley Honda in KY, $875.) Strictly peace-of-mind, the van has done nothing so far to make us feel we will need it.

I was actually a little upset that I only got $24,000 for the 2000 Ody EX trade in. If you look to buy one they are asking $27K - $29K on Yahoo.

I had 8,000 miles on it and also had dealer installed leather, honda security system and mud guards.

I agreed for the $24K trade in value because the dealer guaranteed that trade in value 2 months out when the new vehicle arrives. That was the same dealer in Brooklyn that I had initially purchased the vehicle from. The additional incentive for not selling on your own and trading in is when you trade in you are only liable for the tax on the difference between the cost of the two vehicles. That saved me an additional $1,500.

The trade in price I got for my vehicle wasn't that out of line. Even if you look at the Kelly Blue book value for this vehicle it ranges from $23,405(wholesale price) to $28,570 (Suggested Retail Price).

A dealer in NJ actually gave me a trade in value of $25K but he wasnt willing to guarantee that price until when the new vehicle arrived. So I took the safe bet and went with someone I knew and a tradein price that is guaranteed.

One of the great things about the Ody is the fact that it retains its value so well.

Been very happy with the 00 Ody, and expect to be even happier with the 02. One of the

I don't think you realized it, but if you pull out your paperwork you should see that the full price of the van was taxed. It is not legal to reduce the purchase price by the trade-in. Check your figures and you should see this. You won't be saving any money on taxes. Only if they reduced the selling price for a sale.
  • akin67akin67 Member Posts: 62
I have spoken to 3 dealers on this and made the deal. Here is how sales tax was calculated:

    Price of new car: $30,690
    Price of trade-in: $24,000

    Difference: $ 6,690
    Tax (at 6%): $ 401.40

The other expenses such as plates etc... amounted to about another $120.

I submitted a deposit of $500 and the difference due when the vehicle comes in is something like $6,700.

This is one of the primary benefits of trading in your used car. You don't get to take advantage of this when you sell yourself.

There are several states which legally allow you to reduce your sales taxes on the trade-in of your vehicle. The reasoning is that when the dealer resells your trade-in the state recoups the sales tax anyway and does not want to double-dip. Arizona allows this.

I am on a "list" with a couple of dealers. A few others want me on their list (but they are priced to high over MSRP). I have heard that the allocations for November have been reduced by Honda. Anyone hear that, or just these guys trying to create/extend the sellers market. As much as Honda does a great job of keeping different models in demand, the current economy along the the terrorist activities must have reduced the overall demand for all major purchases. It should be the classic "ripple down" effect, I just wonder if Honda figured that out and has already either slowed production in Canada or is trying to "hold" inventory. Anyone hear anything of longer leadtimes and or short allocations to dealers?
  • tag9tag9 Member Posts: 39
Yes, I heard essentially the same. The only problem is I heard it from a dealer....clearly not an unbiased source. It would be nice if there were some independent confirmation on this issue.
  • tag9tag9 Member Posts: 39
    >>>>>There are several states which legally allow you to reduce your sales taxes on the trade-in of your vehicle.<<<<<

Correct, except it's not just several states. In fact, the only states which do NOT permit such a reduction are CA, VA, and MI.

Just got back from the dealer after ordering '02 EX-L. Paid MSRP, $500 deposit, $195 conveyance fee. What the heck is a coveyance fee? I thought it might be doc, tag, etc. rolled into one. But tags are a separate charge, and I havent heard anyone mentioning it on these boards. Is this a dealer trick? Should I balk on the deal? This was a no-haggle dealership...

Almost certainly another name for a document fee. I just got his for $138 doc fee on my 02 (they seem to be arriving just fine these days b the way...).

I hope you like your Odyssey as much as I still like mine. I have over 45K miles on it with all the original equipment, even Firestone tires. I have not had 1 problem with my highly prized, very valuable, no longer available color, sought after by collectors, Canyon Stone Silver 99 Odyssey.

I read recently that as a result of the terrorists attacks and the ensuing grounding of aircraft they were unable to get some necessary parts to assemble the vehicles.

I was a bit surprised to see that auto manufacturers were even using air shipment. Perhaps it is for the lighter electronic components.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Yeah - that's teh color I would have wanted. HAve the Satin Silver which is lighter but still quite nice and doe the important job of hiding dirt....

I just picked up my ex-l with dvd last week. I haven't driven it much but a couple of things I don't like about it are..
When we drove it home from the dealership (my husband drove) I noticed the front passenger seat was short front to back. I know there has been a lot of complaints about leg room, so I thought maybe they shortened the seat to give it more leg room. The driver seat is also shorter. I am short (5'2") In every car I have ever driven the seat has touched the back of my knees and the seat doesn't touch the back on my knees in the Odyssey. I am going to have a hard time getting used to this. I just don't feel like I am in the seat securely.
Also the armrest is too short and needs to be a bit higher (in comparison to my '98 Grand Caravan)
I also really don't like the leather. I find it too slippery. My husbands car has bucket seats, and you sink into the leather, but in a van you don't sink into it.
I spent a lot of time researching between SUV, station wagons, and minivans. I went with the minvan because the doors are so much easier getting kids in and out. I turned in my leased Caravan in August, and I drove a Ford Taurus for 6 weeks. The biggest issue was the doors (especially in the garage). It was so hard twisting my back and bending down to squeeze them into their carseats.

I was just wondering about the price difference with the warranties. I wonder if some people are quoting the price with tax or without.
I got the extended warranty 7/100/0. My husband was working the numbers with the Honda finance person ( I was in the play area with the kids) My husband come over to me and said it was $899 (Which I know is what people have paid). So I said fine. Later on when I looked over the paperwork they charged us an extra $50 to make it 0 deductible. (which I wasn't happy about, but it was too late) So we actually paid $949.
Then sales tax brought it to $1005. So I was wondering if some people are quoting their extended warranty price with tax.

Most of us aren't getting it from the dealer we purchased our Odysseys from because they wanted to screw us (as you found out). By buying it out of state we didn't pay any tax on it.

jndfish: I got mine here in Dallas and got the price I saw posted here last year. A friend of mine bought her '01 EX-Nav in Kansas City for $1,500. After I told them how much I paid for mine, they went back to the dealer and got a refund.

Also, I believe you have 30 days to get your refund from your dealer for HCW. Read your paperwork from HCW, NOT the ones from the dealer. Or, call the 800 number and get the scoop on the HCW. Go back to your dealer and get a refund. THEN, buy it from other dealers. BTW, no tax from Texas dealers for the warranty.

    Good luck.

Going back to edgeta's question about lead times, it seems there is no let up to the demand of the Odyssey. Talked to a salesperson at Wesloh Honda in San Juan Capistrano today and she said she was just as mystified about the run as anyone else, they had taken 15 deposits for Odysseys in the last three days!

I am not surprised that demand is up. I think with all the improvements they made to the 2002 Odyssey, it really stands out among all the other minivans. I think the word is getting out and a lot more is being written about it.

I'm 6'4" with 36" inseam I've never felt a seat past mid thigh since I was a kid. I guess I'm just happy if my legs aren't bunched up around the sides of the steering wheel. I wouldn't think it would be a safety issue unless one doesn't wear a seat belt. Too bad cars aren't more adjustable to the different sizes we all come in.

I have a 2000 EX Nav, blue in color. I do a lot of traveling between Pennsylvania and Florida and as a result have 65000 miles on it. A dealer in Florida has offered me a 2002 Nav for $11000 plus my 2000 Nav. Not sure if that is a good deal or not. Can anyone advise their thoughts.

What happens to the side airbags in an '02 (seat mounted) when aftermarket leather is installed? Also, which has better resale?
  • geb1geb1 Member Posts: 19
I wouldn't do it! Why risk interfering with the air bags or dealing with aftermarket leather when it is now supplied from the factory? We're trading in our 2000 and one of the major reasons is to get the factory leather. (All the other improvements for 2002 are just icing on the cake!)
  • soon2b4soon2b4 Member Posts: 5
Has anyone set off the warning light for the side airbags? The owners manual said the airbags would deactivate and a light would show on the dash if someone leaned against them. I had some passengers try to do this as a test of the system and could not get any warning.

Does anyone know if you can get a moonroof in the Odyssey? We have one in our Accord and would also like one in a minivan.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Honda does not offer a moonroof from the factory on the Ody. Either here or on another forum, people have had them done. Talk to the dealer - they probably have someone who can do it. I doubt even if sold at the time of purchase if it would be covered under the factory warranty though.

    Good Luck.

In August gave a dealership a $500 deposit for a 2002 Ody and the salesman told me that he has "ordered" my van with my specs (white, leather w/dvd). He said it went on the October allocation and expects it to be in Oct or Nov.

Is this the way it works or am I going to be waiting until this exact vehicle hits their inventory just by luck?

Should I be checking with other dealers for this vehicle or am I safe in having the deposit at one dealer?
  • fishmonger1fishmonger1 Member Posts: 15
They don't order specific vehicles, so yes, your dealer is waiting until this exact vehicle shows up, BUT with a hot car such as this, area dealers keep track of each others' inventory, and swap cars to meet their customers' needs. So if the white van with leather and DVD shows up at another dealer across town before your dealer gets one, it could very likely still end up in your hands via your dealer within 24 hours.
  • hillbiehillbie Member Posts: 10
Fishmonger1, thanks for the heads-up I did discuss the "dealer trade" with the salesman, and was told that because this IS such a hot vehicle, dealer trades are rarely done (maybe in my area only - Southern CA).

I guess I need to take a more active role again and start to talk to other dealers. My $500 deposit is refundable. This dealer is selling at MSRP, so it's not going to be easy.

Could someone with a 2002 tell me if there are selections for 3, 4, and D(drive) on the gear selector. Or only for 3 and D as the 2002 brochures indicate? I was just wondering since I like to kick it out of overdrive manually once in a while, and with only 1,2,3 and D to pick from(as the pictures indicate, but I don't know if they used old pics for the interior dash layout), I'd have to go from 5th to 3rd, something I wouldn't do in a van. Thanks for your response.

There is no D4 so indeed you're kind of stuck there. I'm a bit disappointed in that one myself. It's my only disappointment, though....

I am having difficulty finding a link posted in one of the forums that took you to a website that provided guidance in comparing and selecting extended warranties. I wanted to compare warranty directs exclusionary plan to the Honda Care Warranty.
    Anybody remember the link?
  • darelldddarelldd Member Posts: 20
Note that both 4th and 5th gears on the 2002 are Overdrive ratios. 3rd is the highest gear that is not OD. You'd be fine shifing into it for a bit more power when you need it. That said, I'd still like to be able to choose 4th if I wanted to as well.
