Most plastic pieces are usually painted to match the color of the car. This includes the bumper, door handles, gas filler door [Yes, it is plastic], as well as parts of the grill.

The "Genuine Spares" are often primed by the OEM manufacturers and the body shop color matches them.

The EX does come standard with alarm, which is a steady on and off horn.

For those who keep talking about the DVD, Best Buy sells a 9" DVD combo TV (DC adapted) for about $380. I went for a $190 VHS 9" TV for mine- then for $30 I bought a converter so the Playstation could be plugged in. All I needed was a duel socket adapter and I am in business. Works great for us. Could never really see spending $1500 on such a unit. Just think, with a portable it can go right into the hotel with you.

Thank you for clearing that up. I was beginning to think the dealer painted mine because he didn't have the right parts available. In fact I asked him about that when he did paint them, but he said that was how it was done and I didn't question him further.

I and, I am guessing others, use to think that the door handles and molding around the door handles were made of plastic with the color completely through. This would have solved the problem that occurs in that area.

As time goes on the paint gets scratched from fingernails and also from the car keys, that we hold in our hands, as we open the door. I guess it would be to costly to have on hand all the colors. Also I can see that the color would probably not exactly match.

i just purchased a 2002 navigator in louisville, sam swope honda, for 31685 that included, wheel lip mouldings, pin stripes, protection package,i can't say enough about the dealer and the car, the navigation system is awesome, lots of menus very user friendly, my kids can program it, will recalculate your route if you take a wrong turn, map zooms out to as far as half the united states. or as close as the street your on lots of neat stuff, if your thinking about doing it ,, go for it it's definitly worth the money. you can't find another van this equipped for just over 31,000. p.s do the nav thing instead of the dvd, my playstation plays dvd so i went with the portable route on that mike at BigAl0007@aol.com

Parts do come from manufacturers (and after-market producers) in the color black, typically. The body shop must then paint them. This is doable, but there are 2 very important caveats. For plastic parts like trim and door handles, the proper primer is important. This will help the paint stick and last. It may also be important before painting a black part white. The other issue for plastic (especially flexible parts like bumpers) is that there are elastic-like components which must be mixed with the paint. There are actually 'recipes' to follow depending upon which part of the car (metal, molding, bumper, etc) you are painting. Often you will see cars with paint buckled and pealing off plastic bumpers - these cars were often not painted properly.

Consider painting the molding a contrasting or complementing color - say silver. You can also consider (while you are at the paint gun) painting the body rails (black-colored stuff along the frame under the doors) for a very nice custom look.

Last LX advice - consider adding the remote. It is extremely convenient!
Good luck. This is a great van, and w/o power doors, your LX will last a long, long time and still be worth a ton when you sell it.

I have a 2001 (exnavi)and I want to upgrade to the 2002 which I have every intention of doing but I have 2 concerns.

Are the seats in the 2002 ody a bit more firm than the spongy unsupportive seats?

    Are there any speaker upgrades?

If anyone one can confirm these please post a message thanks

Went in to the Honda dealership in Irvine CA last night, and put a deposit on an EX, Mesa beige. They didn't want to haggle on price, but were able to save us a few hundred by going aftermarket.

The car should be in on Monday, and they said 3 days to install aftermarket leather seats and DVD system. With everything, total price was just under 32K (not including tax/license). I've never even paid close to MSRP, much less almost 2K over, but we have an aging Explorer that my wife has started to refuse to drive, and the Oddy is still much less than our other option, the Acura MDX. Couple of questions:

    1. Is the aftermarket leather going to be of good quality? The salesperson said it was better than Honda's, because it covered everything not just the seating surfaces. Anyone have aftermarket leather seats? Do they interfere with the side airbags? Do they match the rest of the interior color?

    2. Is the DVD entertainment system a standard model that dealers farm out, or do they all use different systems/installers? I want to make sure it comes with RCA jacks so I can plug in a Playstation or something of the sort, but can't seem to get a clear answer from the dealer.

Please don't respond to tell me how much more I paid than I should have, I'm already cringing at the thought :-) The good thing is that my wife can drive the Honda, and I get to drive the "fun" car!

Your salesman is giving you a line of sales smoke and mirrors. Ask him which brand of aftermarket leather he plans to install. If it's Katzkin, only the seating surfaces are leather - and a very un-natural feeling leather at that. The non-seating surfaces are vinyl, as is the entire third row seat.

I have Katzin leather on my 99EX, and would not purchase it again.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
Classic Soft Trim is all leather on all surfaces and door panels. As far as if it interfers with the side airbags no one knows yet, as side airbags only come on the 02'

Repainting The Door Handles by billg7- as far as repainting them to match if Honda is like GM the door handles or for that matter any painted part except the body it self comes to them painted. Dashes etc. are all painted when GM gets them but for anyone ordering something do to damage it comes in a flat black finish, even interior parts as it just costs to much to warehouse all the different pieces in all the colors.

Anyone have any information about the Alabama plant..when it's starting to produce Odysseys, etc.?
  • jmnygaardjmnygaard Member Posts: 48
One dealer here in San Diego tried to give me the same line about after market leather, but I didn't believe him. Then I found out another dealer in town would sell me the same vehicle for nearly $1000 less, with factory leather. I also considered buying a DVD system from Best Buy or someone like that, but their sound comes through the front speakers, too, something I couldn't tolerate. Anyway, with info from this board, I got an EXL with the DVD for $30,190 plus 7.75% tax and $243 lic. from Spreen Honda in Loma Linda. Yes, I have to wait for the car, but it's worth it to me to get a "good" (HA!) price and factory installed leather and DVD. If you don't need the vehicle right away, you might want to give Veronica a call at 909-799-7070.

I am new here, but I have some experience that might help regarding aftermarket equipment......

Each seperate model designation for Honda(or any other car make) carries a unique VIN number. That is what is used to categorize the car for trade in. So there is a different and unique model portion of the VIN number for an EX, EX with Leather, EX with leather and dvd, or EX with leather and navigation system.

Fact is, an EX with factory Leather and DVD will bring more in trade or sale than an EX with leather and dvd added aftermarket. It might not be right, but that is how it is.

Unless you are getting a SIGNIFICANT savings, you will not make out on this deal.

Anyone have any experience with buying HONDA 7yr/100k mile warranty? Now buying 2001 LX, and dealer trying to sell the warranty for $1100 (started at $1325). Is this worth it, as I thought I had seen posts were users were getting for less....
    Very much appreciate any reply's!
    Thanks.

I bought my 2002 EX yesterday. I told the dealer I could get it for $895 online and he matched it.
  • 56nomad5656nomad56 Member Posts: 16
Thanks for your quick replies regarding my queries. After a call back to the dealership they supplied the following info:

    1. According to the sales rep I just talked to, the aftermarket leather is "more like the accord's soft leather, not like the vinyl-like leather in the CRVs, and does cover the whole seat." This leads me to believe it is the Classic Soft and not the Katzkin.

    2. The DVD is under the front passenger seat, comes with two wireless headphones, and can be operated with the standard Honda stereo.

Good point tomhauck about the resale. My wife really would prefer the Redrock pearl anyway, and it would give us more time to save up for a big down payment. I will call my sales rep tomorrow and ask him if I can transfer my deposit to a Redrock EX-L with DVD. In the meantime I'll also call Veronica (thanks for the tip jmnygaard) and see if she can do better.

    Thanks again for your advice!

I am in the process of purchasing '02 LX for 1% under sticker. They've offered me the 5yr/100,000 warranty for $814 which they said was their cost. Is this a good deal?
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
To quote you: ""1. According to the sales rep I just talked to, the aftermarket leather is "more like the accord's soft leather, not like the vinyl-like leather in the CRVs, and does cover the whole seat." This leads me to believe it is the Classic Soft and not the Katzkin.""

Sounds like Sales "Speak" to me; i.e. B.S. Personally, I would want assurances of that IN WRITING before I gave them any money. Keep in mind that you're only a short distance from Katzkin's plant.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
No that is not. The going price is about $895 for the 7/100/0 deductable.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
How true. I have NOT heard of anyone on this site who has been happy with the Katzkin leather where as the Classic Soft Trim as far as I know, including myself have been very satisfied with it. Check out the Classic site at classicsofttrim.com. Good luck and pin down the sales people or you will be sorry.

It is up and running, this month they will produce only 150 units. Every month the production should go up, with Spring 2002 being at capacity.

There's a small red plastic piece that fits onto the top rear tail light covering the mounting screw. Ours seems to have fallen off somewhere. Any idea where I could get a replacement other than the dealership? I'm sure they'd want to charge like $20 for it.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
If you are missing a piece that fell off it should be covered under warranty, as it must not have been put on correctly in the first place. On a 02 you couldn't have had it that long.

Can anyone tell me what sort of traction control system the Odessey has? On some cars all the system does is cut the engine power when a skid is detected. Better (IMHO) systems apply the ABS brakes to the slipping wheel in order to transfer power to the wheel which isn't slipping. This sort of traction control could help you get started from a stop in slippery snow.

Where on the odyssey can the assembly plant be found? Thanks Byron
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
    Check the VIN number:

    1 = US plant
    2 = Canada plant.
  • arbabcarbabc Member Posts: 36
I have been offered MSRP -$700. Mud guards, foglights and hood deflector/protector will be at dealer cost.

If anyone has checked on prices in the last couple of days, how does this deal compare? I think the dealers are more motivated now, after the Trade Center tragedy, than ever to deal on the Odys.
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
It is the latter. It applies the brake to the slipping wheel. It is very effective on snow and ice covered hills (sez the voice of experience!).
  • tom477tom477 Member Posts: 42
Thanks for the info..you also answered my email about canadian odysseys.....where's your dealership?
  • jmnygaardjmnygaard Member Posts: 48
That is a great price. I'm hoping that it will take so long to get my Ody in that by then they will go down in price. (I can dream, can't I?)

P.S. Where are you located? Was this an internet price?
  • arbabcarbabc Member Posts: 36
I live in Cleveland Ohio. And, no it was not an internet price. I'll give out dealer contacts as soon my deal is inked and I get an Ok from the sales rep.
  • peterparkerpeterparker Member Posts: 11
I decided to go tih the EX instead of adding $1000 worth of options to the LX... I'm sure I'll be happy with the decision... my ? is this:

My dealer will sell me the warranty for $1100, before I negotiate, I want to know hwere I can find the same warrenty for $795 on the net???

    thanks,
    parker
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
Can't but $895 for the 7/100/0 is the norm. I got mine from Saratoga Honda out of New York. Check the Honda site for a listing of them. I believe Dave Winnie was the man I talked with. Gave him my CC info and got my receipt in the mail in about a week with the Warrany from Honda about 3 weeks later.
  • odyownerodyowner Member Posts: 3
The shop is charging us $100 dollars for the $7,500 mile check-up. Is that normal? I had thought it was covered under the warranty. We dropped off the van this morning at the dealership and they charged us $100. Is that because we didn't buy the van there? We thought we could go back to any certified Honda shop for the maintenance checkups.

    Thanks in advance.

    Magali
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Maintenance visits are not covered under the warranty.

$100 sounds fair depending on where you live and what they did. My selling dealer charges $85 + tax + environmental fees. They follow the severe maintenance schedule in the manual plus a few other things.

Compare the list of what they did to the list in the manual and that will tell you if they covered it.
  • jimblockjimblock Member Posts: 62
Unfortunately, check-ups, oil changes, and normal maintenance are NOT covered by Honda's warranty. (They aren't covered by most other automakers either.)

Whether $100 is reasonable depends on what they did. An oil change with filter should be $20 to $30 at most dealers. What else did they do?
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
My dealer follows the severe schedule. I received life time free oil changes, when I bought the car, if I have them done by the dealer that sold me the car.

The first service, which was an oil change only, at 3750 miles, was therefore free.

The 7500 mile service is explained in the owners manual, as are the other services. It includes oil change and rotating the tires. My dealer normally charges about $80 he said, but he charged me only $52 because the oil change was free.

A 6yr/75k extended warranty will probably run you around $800. We just bought a new Ody last week and the dealer tried to charge me $1800!! I told him about the internet price. Needless to say he came down considerably and matched their price.

Thanks to all of your advice, I cancelled my deposit at Irvine Honda. I didn't even think to ask my neighbor's friend (a service manager for a Honda dealer) for help.

He was able to talk to one of his good friends at the dealership, and I'm paying MSRP for either a RRP or Mesa EX-L/DVD ($600 less than the original offer). Also, they are giving me $1500 more for my Explorer than Irvine Honda, and include the first two oil changes and 15K service free.

The only negative is that they couldn't give me a firm delivery date, only that my salesperson would call me today and every couple of days afterwards to let me know what was on their allocation lists.

I feel a greater sense of peace about this and am willing to wait a few more days/weeks. Thanks again for your helpful insights.

Has anyone had good luck/back luck with the in-dash CD changer? I have an 2001 EX so I suppose these 2 units still work together.
    Thanks

56nomad56, I'm guessing your going thru Weslo Honda in San Juan. I wouldn't touch Irvine Honda with a 10 foot pole. I've used them for test driving and checking on colors, but they laugh at you when you tell them you're gonna buy it elsewhere for MSRP. MY RRP EX-L-RES is shipping today and I should get it soon from Weslo. They seem very up front and I'm pleased so far. Since I've been waiting for this specific car (color & trim), my wait might have been longer than others not so picky, approximately 2 months.

I live in Gainesville, FL and have been on the waiting list for LX odyssey since June. In August I let them know I wanted the evergreen pearl. They told me today that it will be the end of November before it comes in. Has anyone else bought one in this color, or are they not being made yet? If someone has seen this color, does it look nice or is it a yucky kind of green
  • 56nomad5656nomad56 Member Posts: 16
Actually tiny6, its Norm Reeves in Huntington Beach, and I made a mistake, it's actually a little higher than MSRP, but only a couple hundred dollars.

Got two calls today. One from salesman Thor at Norm Reeves. Said he got an allocation list from Honda and there was ONE Mesa EXL/RES on this list. He said he should have the VIN late this week.

Other call was from Irvine. Told me the Ody I had put the deposit down on was in, and I could still get it. Still wouldn't budge on the price (31,800) or my trade-in (7,250). Said thanks but no thanks, I'll take my chances. So what if I don't get one right away. I don't have to be "the first one on the block".

I think dealers like Irvine are going to get a rude awakening when people start realizing that we are actually in a downturn and start pulling back on their expenses. All the people who got turned off by "We've been directed not to sell for less than 2K over MSRP" and shopped elsewhere will never go back. I won't.
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
The Odyssey does not have a stability control system that will detect skids and correct if necessary. Traction control will only activate if front wheel spin is detected. The most advanced traction control systems utilise both brake and throttle modulation to maximise traction in slippery conditions.

The new Evergreen Pearl is a decent color. It can be similarly compared to the 2002 Accord color..Noble green. Check out Noble Green and you'll see.

We have ad a few 2002 Odys in Evergreen and they are nice.

Some dealers who were at MSRP are sold out until November. I know of a couple who have cars coming in October, so get to work shopping!
  • sangtransangtran Member Posts: 3
I think post #3348 is correct about customer service. During the goodtimes, dealers and salesmen can be selective in who they want to serve, as long as the customers pay them the price they want. But when the bad time rolls around, these dealers will rethink about their customer service policy. Alot of the dealers in the Bay Area, CA, have this attitude also. Just a few months ago, you either pay 1000-2000 above MRSP or they won't even talk to you. But just in the last two weeks, I received calls from dealers asking me to come down to take a look. I think if you wait a little bit longer, you all will find prices will come down below MSRP. I know the feeling in the Bay Area right now is that we are in a recession. Money will be tight. I would rather have roof for my family, than having to pay 2000 above MRSP.
  • 56nomad5656nomad56 Member Posts: 16
I think you're correct sangtran, but there lies the conundrum. If I wait, maybe many other people will wait also expecting the same things (under MSRP, less demand, etc.). I may end up with the same low supply/high demand situation later. However, at least the car itself would be marginally cheaper.

No such problems purchasing our 98 Lexus GS4 about 5 months ago. Let me take the car home for an entire day, free services, certified, detailed the whole car, etc. etc. etc. They misquoted the mileage allowance and months on the lease, and ate the difference instead of raising our payment. I'd go back to that dealership in a heartbeat. That's what earns repeat business.

Hi,can anybody give me the fair trade-in value of the 01 ody ex with 7600 miles on it? I tried to trade for the 02 ody exl-res, but the dealer only give me 23000 for it. I think it a little low, isn't it? Thank.
  • dmathews3dmathews3 Member Posts: 1,739
Everybody is complaining about having to buy Odysseys at retail and that with everything going on in the world and the new plant starting up are sure that the price will drop to below sticker. The downturn is the price we get on trade will also drop. I wonder if you aren't seeing the beginning of this.
