I have a MB 2002 EXL-NAV on order for delivery between October 18 & 20. Just got an email from a dealer about 200 miles away stating:
    "I have a Silver 02 EXL-R ready for deliver $27,190 delivered to ....".
He is ready to deliver it to my location. This is exactly $3K below MSRP - I have been tracking Odyssey pricing and cannot believe this! Is this even possible????
I have a call into him but to clarify things but it was late. I wonder what the catch is?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I think he misquoted. The EX has an MSRP of $27,190.

Well I was off to locate a 2002 LX about a month ago... yes the LX... in my opinion truly for the +2650 difference ($2500 +6% tax)... I could care less about the electric doors(just one more thing to break)... as far as trim... the alloy wheels would be nice... but the body molding is colored on the LX for 2002... this was a big plus for me... cause that is something I really didn't like about the 2001 LX (black)... over all the mechanics and safety are the same!... but the only thing I did want was the keyless remote and the CD player...

I called 4 dealers in the New England area, the first offered the van at MSRP and would even throw in the factory keyless entry if I gave a deposit... hmmm... so I called 3 other dealers... and 2 out of 3 would also would do the same deal when I told them about the first...

So I went ahead and ordered a GG LX in the end of Aug.,... since it was a LX and the demand is not a high as the EX the wait was only 4-6 weeks... or so they say... I will update when I get it... hopefully in a couple more weeks... the only thing I have to add is a factory CD player for ~$260... and I have exactly what I need...

I read all the reviews and kept up on all the changes for 2002... very impressive.... glad I waited to order in Aug instead of June... 2002 has some great additions... and kept price very decent

    I can't believe I am actually excited about getting a mini-van

We signed the final paper yesterday on our new 2002 EX and drove it home. The last thing they had us look at was option packages which included extended warranty, free oil changes, fuel injector cleaning, etc. We were interested in the 6yr/75k extended warranty. The "Business Manager" quoted me a price of $1800 which I could easily finance by adding it onto the purchase price of the vehicle. I told him I could buy one direct on the internet for $700-$800. He looked flustered, then he pulled out this blue binder and acted like he was looking something up. Then he said he could let me have it for $790. Maybe they were running a special yesterday, huh?

We drove off with our 2002 EX leather Ody last Saturday. I waited a couple of days before posting to get a feel for the car.

Does it drive as nice as a Chrysler T&C? I don't think so. We had a 96 LXI that seemed a little more carlike. But you already know that from the reviews. It drives well, it doesn't miss by much. And the Chrysler will give you tremendous reliability problems, if mine was typical.

Put your mind to rest about the Redrock Pearl. It is really really nice. I couldn't be more pleased.

The leather is OK, not Lexus quality but reasonable. No regrets there either.

Power is very good and the transmission is great. I haven't had any 1st gear downshift hunting at slow speeds like I have had with my 2001 Accord V6. They have this geared really well for a van, good acceleration and very smooth. Think they were also concerned about mileage when they made the tradeoff. Very pleased.

The CD player is just that, a player, not a changer. I think it sounds better than the changer on my Accord. Don't know why they left the hole underneath. You can stuff CDs in there, but it doesn't look very good. Don't know what they were thinking about that.

I am mildly upset that at the EX level some things are not standard. No wheel well flaps, no door trim, no cross bars for the roof rack. Also the hood has that stupid idiot stick to hold it up, instead of the hydraulic lilfters like are on the Accord EXV6. But these are just nits to pick.

All in all I am very pleased with the van and I know you will be too.

The guy was just doing his job. Can't blame him for trying! Congratulations on being prepared.

I hope he didn't slip it to you with a off brand warranty. Make sure it's the genuine Honda Warranty or you may live to regret it.

The 'hole' underneath the cd is for the cassette player.

  • tag9tag9 Member Posts: 39
I think that 'hole' can accomodate either the in-dash CD changer OR the cassette player. ??

I see the Honda website is now updated with the 02 Odyssey, if anyone is interested.
  • DTKWOKDTKWOK Member Posts: 131
I think the reason why Honda doesn't include the crossbars for the EX is because (1) they can gouge you on it later and (2) they're probably not confident about their design. Let me explain, there's another board (dedicated to the Odyssey), where owners were told by Honda that they (Honda) would not cover any damages if a carrier (e.g. Yakima) were used. This is due to possible lift forces exerted on the bar setup by the carrier. The bars that run along the length of the van should be okay. Now, many people I know of (including me) intend on using these bars just for this application. Anyway my $0.02.

"Also the hood has that stupid idiot stick to hold it up, instead of the hydraulic lilfters like are on the Accord EXV6. But these are just nits to pick."

My other car had the hydraulic lifters and I prefer the stupid stick. The hydraulic lifters are a very high failure rate item, about every 2-3 years. Also after it fails you have to find a stick somewhere to hold up the hood or it falls down on you, which can be a big problem. You are out someplace where you can't find the right size stick and you are out of luck.

The stupid stick will probably never fail. If I had to raise the hood often, the stick would be a problem, but as it is I believe the stick is the best trade off.

FWIW, my Mercedes-Benz Gelaendewagen uses the stupid stick, too. *:o))

Right on!! That was the exact excuse the dealer now gives. How can "EXL-R" be a typo for "EX" is beyond me!
  • lotus18lotus18 Member Posts: 37
I finally put down a deposit this morning for a 02' EX-L with navi. Thanks to jimtx, I am able to take $500 off MSRP.
My little concern is the RedRock Pearl, I am not so sure if it looks good, but marks96 comment on that color sure has made me feel better. Also, I have noticed that the 02' green color is lighter than the emerald green in previous years' models. I think this lighter evergreen would look nice. Has anyone seen this color in real ?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Yes I saw one at a dealer near my office yesterday. It is definitely lighter than the emrerald and looked to me to be a solid color rather than pearl/metallic. It looked nice to me.

As an aside, this dealer has equipped this Ody to be a "buy me today model". It was an EX with aftermarket leather and heated seats for $2400!!!!
  • ukrickukrick Member Posts: 66
We were at a dealership over the weekend and saw the Red Rock Pearl. It's a deep red color. Not like a Candy Apple Red or Fire Engine Red. We thought it was a very nice color.

Has anyone recently purchased a used Oddy?

I was wondering what kind of prices they were getting. I am thinking of buying a 99 with low mileage...
  • ukrickukrick Member Posts: 66
You might want to check out autotrader.com and the honda2001.com. Honda's web site offers the ability to search for Honda Certified Used Vehicles. You may be shocked at what you find out. I've seen used 1999 EX's with dealers asking around $25k.
  • misterjohnnymisterjohnny Member Posts: 41
I have an 02 on order, and I was planning on eventually getting a carrier for it. What does Yakima say about it? Do they recommend it for the Ody? Are there other models that are better for this van?

I am interested in trading in my 2000 EX (with 14,000 miles) for the new improved 2002 and have been checking into what it could possibly be worth. It looks like quite a lot! With such strong resale value, how many others are contemplating the same thing?

Try explain this one to the wife. I've exchanged my June 2001 ex for an exl 2002 due October. I felt that if I,m going to be driving the van for 10 years then leather, side air bags and better brakes are what I want. I took a $2,500 canadian hit now, but we had agreat holiday with the van and kids this summer. I think I would have taken a bigger hit by waiting until next year..

I am planning on purchasing a 2002 Odyssey LX very soon (am going to the delaer to test drive the EX tonight as the LX is on order and will be here in the next week or so). Because there is no info yet on the prices for a 2002 on edmunds does anyone know if $25,690 is a good price? I was told the MSRP was $24,690. On all my other cars I have always paid approx. $500 over invoice, but from the research I have done it seems that the Odyssey does indeed go over MSRP.

According to the site, the TMV for a 2001 Ody LX is $25,578, so I would be paying only $112 more for a 2002.
  • jmurman42jmurman42 Member Posts: 675
24,690 is MSRP and includes freight. This should be a target price for you.

Hi, I am also trying to decide between the Evergreen and the Redrock LX. I like the beige interior better than the Quartz. But the red looks like a prettier color. Does the green look like the one in the brochure, or more like the one on the Honda website when you customize and get a quote.
I have been on the waiting list since 6-1-01 and am growing impatient with the dealer here in Gainesville, FL. Does anyone know of a decent dealer in FL charging MSRP or below.
    Thanks
  • csandoval1csandoval1 Member Posts: 5
Jerry since $24,690 is indeed the MSRP and the Odyssey's have indeed been going for more than the MSRP you think $1000 over is too much??
  • lotus18lotus18 Member Posts: 37
Since there are so many messages praising the RP, I went ahead and order the RP yesterday. However, after giving the color more thought and several discussion with my spouse, I decided to change it to evergreen pearl for the following reasons:
    1. We have an opportunity to see a red one just arrived the dealer this morning, the interior grey (or quartz) color really turned us off. We think the brighter and happier ivory interior looks better and the evergreen does come with ivory.
    2. The bright red (actually it is not as shiny as the other metallic color) worries us about the safety in the sense that the red brake lights would not be as conspicuous while braking.
    3. The black plastic trim that run underneath on each side's front and sliding doors look so obvious and really out of place with the red body color. To us, it seems like a downgrade to LX since Honda used to differentiate the EX from LX of all models by standardizing them with same body color molding.
    4. The very last reason is that I do not want to be seen driving a fleet van on the road, because from what I have read so far, I suspect there will be quite a few RP on the road. (a silly thought, uh!)
I hope the evergreen color would not disappointed me as the GG we picked for our 99'. (the GG is actually grey to us, unless it is seen sparkling clean under the sun)
Again, I still believe it is just a matter of personal preference. For whoever likes the RP, it is a nice color and enjoy it.

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey for sale, it is an EX with Navigation. I have about $700 worth in options, Splash Guards, All Weather Mats, Rear Cargo Liner, and Front Deflector. Also the Plates are new, that cost is $500. I am trying to sell it for slightly under invoice, 28,500. This means I will lose over $3,000, and the buyer will save more than $1,800 over new in 2001. It has only 3,000 miles and is same as new as we only drove it 1.5 months and purchased it 3 months ago. Color is Mesa Beige and it is our private vehicle, only selling because of a work situation.
My question is: Does that seem like an OK price or what should I expect. I thought I would not have any trouble finding a buyer but hardly any calls and no one has came to look. It is on www.autotrader.com if anyone is interested.

From what I have read on another website (e-mail me DTKWOK@yahoo.com for more info on the website, since I am not allowed to post it here), neither Yakima nor Thule recommends using the factory crossbars as they do not believe it would take the lifting force generated by their boxes. Honda even said that they would not be responsible for injuries, damages, nor death caused by failure of the crossbars in this sense. Not trying to scare anyone, just pointing out what I have read.

i have been following this board, and i am planning in the next few weeks to purchase a 2002 ho. does anyone have information on a bolt on class II hitch, and how to wire the lights. if you have a 2001, i understand that the 2002 may be the same for the hitch. the 2002 has amber turn signals, so the wiring will be different. however, if someone wired a 2001, could you let me know what product you used.
    thanks

This is in response to post 3276. I have a 2000 Odyssey EX with aftermarket Leather. It has only 8,000 miles. I went to a dealer in Central NJ and the dealer indicated that I can get somewhere around $25K - $26K as a trade in value for it. I looked for a similar car on the net to get an idea as to what they are going for and I noticed that owners of such vehicles are asking in the range of $28K - $29K.

However, the dealer did point out that if you trade the vehicle in thru dealer you only have to pay sales tax on the difference. For example if new Ody is $30K and trade in is 26K, you only pay sales tax on $4K. Whereas if you sell on your own and buy another you have to pay sales tax on full value of new car.

I am also curious to what other dealers are offering to those wanting to trade in. Please post if you have any info.
  • akin67akin67 Member Posts: 62
What is wrong with Honda? Why do they keep doing this? When I got my 2000 Odyssey they didnt offer leather as an option. So I had to get it installed as a dealer option. Now I am looking to trade in my 2000 for a 2002 with both Navigation and DVD player and I am told that I can not get both in the same car?

Doesn't Honda want to make more money? Why do they do that. I am now considering getting the 2002 EXL-Nav and having an aftermarket DVD entertainment system put in.

Anyone know who makes the DVD entertainment system on the Odyssey? And also, where is the DVD player located? Is it just one unit that is attached to the drop down screen or is the DVD component located elsewhere?

    Please advise.

    Thanks

    Hi -

You've heard correctly. From the factory you can only order one or the other. You're doing exactly what I am...buying the NAV, and putting the RES in later. I'm told by my dealer that it will be possible (for about $2200) to add the RES to a NAV van after delivery. Plus there are many aftermarket units available.

I just ordered the I/O Magic PVR mentioned in an earlier post. My RES is scheduled to be built 9/22 (before the war). Since I don't have my RES I have no way of testing CDvs in it.

Does anyone know if the DVD player will read CDvs?

Can someone please tell me what the make and model# of the DVD player is? My dealer, as usual, claims to know nothing and has no way of finding out this information.

We took delivery and drove home our '02 Oddy EX-L Navi today. Initial review: Excellent van! I need to change my username from 2004runner - that went bye-bye for the van. (What can I say, my wife really, really wanted the van and I can't deny her anything - (okay I thought the van was a good idea too)).

Anyway, we decided on the Navi because we (like others have posted before), assumed we could easily add an overhead drop-down screen type of dvd system to the van later if we wanted to. However, after after checking into it, we found that doing so would have squashed our option of adding a power moonroof to the van later - an option we both really want. Our best-bet is to either have a dvd system with small screens added to the back of the front seat head rests (expensive), or just get a laptop computer with a built-in dvd player and let our kids use that. The latter is the least expensive, and the probable choice - if we decide the dvd is a necessity.

The final option regarding the dvd player is to actually have our kids read, engage in conversation, or (gulp) actually enjoy the scenery!

The 2002 Odyssey is an excellent choice for anyone - vdv, navi, leather or not. I hope those of you whom are waiting get your Oddys soon - will.

    Best of luck!

A Honda dealer here in Louisville, KY installs VHS entertainment systems into new Ody's for an additional $2400. Wow!! I think I would just go down to my local electronics story and buy a $200 TV/VCR combo unit with a 12-volt adapter and sit it in the floor board.
  • akin67akin67 Member Posts: 62
I guess my best bet is also to order the 02 Ody EX-L NAVI and add a DVD player and drop down screen later.

darelldd indicated on post 3288 that it would be possible for the dealer to add afterwards for about $2200. Do you know if it is the identical unit? And will it function exactly as the factory installed version? And what is the name of your dealer and where are they located.

Those who do have the RES factory installed entertainment system, exactly where is the unit located? I know where the drop down screen is but is the DVD player a part of that drop down or is it located elsewhere in the car? And when you are playing a DVD movie is it possible to have the sound come out of the vehicles speakers? Or do they have to wear the headphones to listen to the sound?

Also, regarding post 3292 by ukrick, you may want to be careful about sitting any video or TV on the floor. I read some time ago that if you are looking up at a screen you don't get car sick, however, if you look down you WILL get car sick.

You should at least verify if this is true or not before subjugating the kids to this.

I'm getting a 2002 LX in a couple weeks.. it comes with 4 speakers and I was thinking about adding another 2... I'm not going to install it myself and was wondering if Circuit City or Best Buys or an Independent audio place would be a good place to shop an have it installed???

Also, if I get a the honda subwoofer or any subwoofer.. where would it be placed??? on the floor??

I do think that 1,000 over invoice is too much. Some dealers try to get away with it here in Maryland, as a matter of fact they will try for more than that, but MSRP should be your target price.

I would think twice about a bolt on trailer hitch. Honda says that if you use a trailer hitch WITHOUT a transmission and power steering cooler and you have trans problems it will not cover them under your warranty. Call your dealer about the Honda hitch for the 2002.

  • geb1geb1 Member Posts: 19
The Honda sub mounts under the driver seat securely with the supplied brackets. The wire harness plugs right into the fuse box and stock radio. Very neat installation. If you have the CD changer, it must be moved under the passenger seat.
  • roadrunner70roadrunner70 Member Posts: 241
thanks jrmuran. i am aware of the cooler requirement for the trans, but i think the 2002 sales brochure is silent on the need for a power steering fluid cooler.

i'm just trying to find someone who has a class II hitch on their 2001 or someone who may have purchased a 2002 and already got a hitch. thanks again.

My dealer has suggested painting the door handle, lolding and mirrors on the White LX to make it look like an EX, except for tires, for around $200...

Would the paint stick to the plastic... ????

The EX is making a lot more sense as I add on options... but I'd still like to know if the painting would work.

Re: Currently can not order Odyssey with both Navigation and DVD Entertainment system. You can get it with one or the other.

I called Honda and asked if it would be possible to order all of the parts for the DVD entertainment system and retrofit it into an EX-L NAVI and they said that theoretically it is possible and at the dealers discretion to do so.

He could not tell me why it wasn't available as an option, it could be due to some technical reason (conflict with something else) or just to keep the price at a particular range.

However, he did indicate that they are logging all customer requests and may offer it as an option in the future if enough requests are lodged. So if you want to do so the number for

    Hi -

I was told by my dealer (University Honda in Davis, CA) that the RES unit would be identical, and integrated just like the factory unit. The DVD player sits in the dash down low. You can see it in pictures from the Honda web site. Yes, you can play the movie sound out the rear speakers, and the front passengers can listen to another source out the front speakers if you so wish.

I am buying a 2002EX tommorow. What does installing an alarm actually add? I thought the Ex comes standard with a security system. Am just I paying to add an audible alert?
  • billg7billg7 Member Posts: 342
I believe the door handles and molding around door handle are painted. When the dealer replaced the two door handles and molding around the door handles on my EX, destroyed( No wonder I don't know how to spell. Destroyed should really be spelled destroied) by an accident. He painted them the original color white.

I know this because that is the one area he did not do a good job on and I had him redo it. I asked him are those painted as original equipment and he said yes.

I can not tell the difference between the painted passenger side door handles and molding around the door handles and the drivers side which is the original equipment. I certainly expect the paint to stick. If someone knows that these should not be painted, please let me know. I think however that they come in a dull black and are meant to be painted. Otherwise they would have to stock parts in each color. Like you, I use to think they were plastic, with the color completely through. I don't know about the other areas you mention.

The RES system from the factory is for DVD's. It will also play CD's, but not CD-R's. The dealers are able to install the iVes system from the 2001 model year into an Odyssey with the Nav system. It is a VHS system, and is usually sold for somewhat less than $2000.
The RES system from the factory comes with wireless remote (1) and wireless headphones (2), which are usable from the middle and rearmost seating. This is per American Honda.
