    Has anyone gotten (or would have gotten) their money's worth from the Honda Care extended warranty or, as Honda calls it, service contract, on an Odyssey?

    Interesting. The feedback does not appear to be coming from the tires according to the service manager at Honda. He thinks it may be coming from the power steering box. The power assist may be going bad.

    Please help. My wife takes our two kids (still in car seats) to school and day care each day driving our 2002 Ody Ex. On more than 5 occasions, while slowing down the vehicle and making a left or right turn, the van completely shuts down (engine, electrical system, power steering, the dashboard displays, etc.)! This event usually happens within 5-15 minutes after starting the vehicle in the morning. The only way to stop the vehicle is to throw the transmission into neutral and apply the parking brakes. We have taken the van twice to the dealer who could not find anything wrong nor recreate the problem. They recently replaced the fuel pump after the last trip to the dealership. After picking-up the van and returning it home, the next morning the engine stalled and shut down again (twice) while slowing the van down to stop.
    The vehicle is currently in the dealership for the third time. My wife refuses to drive the vehicle with the kids in the car which I agree. Does anyone have any possible solutions or have experienced similar problems? I am open to any potential cause or possible solutions. Don't know what to do.

    I have a 2001 EX odyssey. The battery completely died due to interior lights being left on, and I had to replace the battery. Now my alarm, along with automatic door locks locking automatically after leaving the van will not reset. I press in valet while turning on van and nothing happens. After I shut off the van, the red led is on and constant. How can I put back on my alarm and auto door locking?

    Do you have an aftermarket alarm system? If so, you may need to contact the installer to get this rectified.

    I have a 2001 Honda odyssey in which battery went dead recently. After jump starting the car, the radio won't work it requires a radio code. Now, I have recently bought this van and the previous owner does not have the code. Honda dealership at first did not find the code in their system and a day later they gave me a 5-digit code which does not work.
         Please tell me if i have any other options except purchasing a new radio.

    But is it an aftermarket alarm that the dealer installed? This auto locking feature isn't standard on any Ody of this generation hence my question.

    Look in the glove box I lost my code and called the dealer, they said look in the box, sure enough the number was on the back of the box.

    Road-force balancing seems to have improved the handling somewhat. What the dealer told me is that this problem is fixed and I don't need to get the tires changed. Is this really true? Would I need to get this special balancing done every time I get the tires rotated and balanced? Should I talk to them about getting the tires replaced?

    Balancing can only do so much. If the tires are iffy (out of round), they will continue to give problems (based on my experience). The only real solution is new treads. Up to you to decide when the hassle of dealing with the old ones outways the cost of new ones.

    Another thing to keep in mind, is that bad tires will result in premature suspension and steering equipment failure and will need to be replaced sooner then later.

    My 2000 ody seems to need about 4 or 5 brake applications for grade logic to induce a downshift. From what I have been able to find out there are 9 "maps" used in the fuzzy logic controller (combinations of conditions). Anyone know more details?

    My dealer estimated $115-$ 150 to replace the clock backlight lamp. Anyone rigged a white LED replacement so this doesn't recur in another 4yrs?

    The lamp is an LED. It looks like to you to remove the lower trim pieces and then the upper trim piece to reach the clock.

    Hello,
    I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey with about 48000 miles. My engine check light turned on and it does not go away-and I failed my inspection. Is there anything I can do to fix this (without going to the dealer)? Any help is sincerely appreciated.

    You can bring it to any car repair place. Or you can buy a code reader to read and reset the code.A code reader from Actron runs for about $99-$149. However for the Check engine Light to come on, there is something wrong somewhere. If it is in the emissions(most likely) it will be covered by the dealer up to 80k miles . It can also be in the trans or some other component. Like I said most likely emissions. Some places like Autozone will read the code for free. If the cause is not found and fixed ,it may lead to $$ costs at the end with something as minor as decreased gas mileage to Trans failure. Good Luck (most likely its your EGR valve and will be covered under the 8 year /80k warranty.

    I took my '05 EXL in because there is a whistling noise from the front windshield. I also noticed that there is a slight grinding noise when the van shifts from first to second gear when driving slowly. The service manager is telling me that is normal and just the ABS cycling, We test drive a new touring and it made a similar noise once. Anyone else experience this?

    the abs self test usually happens once when you first start up. Is this something you hear all the time?

    One downside to a quieter cabin is hearing mechanical noises that used to be drowned out by road noise!

    I have a 2005 Odyssey with only 300 miles! When going 50 mph, I notice extra vibrations/rumbling through the gas pedal and can hear it as interior noise. I notice that this excess rumbling happens at 1500 rpm, even as you accelerate upwards from the lower speeds, though maybe not as noticable.

    I let the service guy check it out but he didn't find anything. Based on the odometer reading (less than 1 mile driven from when I let them take the van), they only drove it in the parking lot, and not at 50 mph (which happens to run at 1500 rpm)!

    I'll take it to another dealer when I get a chance. At least I have this documented as a concern in case something disastrous occurs due to this symptom.

    Previous post mention this symptom on prior year models, so apparently, Honda hasn't fixed this flaw. The fix for them was swapping out a dynamic damper from an Accord, but that doesn't sound right for a brand new vehicle.

    Anybody have a similar experience, or a good fix?

    I noticed the grinding noise on my '05 too. It happens within the first minute as the van is accelerating for the first time. It doesn't happen again until the van is turned off, and started again. For some reason I don't remember this happening during the test drive. It will be interesting to see if my dealership gives the same explanation of ABS cycling, when I contact them Monday.

    My Honda dealership told em it is the VSA cycling. I am going to turn off the VSA and see if the noise is gone.

    take it to the dealer and have them check the erg valve. we have had a great deal of trouble with this and have had it replaced twice -- covered by warranty that the manufacturer had to extend because of a defective part.

    i have a 2004 odyssey lx.. it to vibrated as soon as i drove it off of the lot.. it took several visits--turned out the Bridgestone Potenza tires were bad.. they gave me 4 new tires but they are still bad at 60 miles and higher.. i am going to have them check the suspension.. good luck

    I have a 2001 Odyssey. When I turn on the AC set the temperature to 60 the AC is cold. Then I turn the AC to 68 hot air blows out. Same with the heat. Set the heat to 80 and it is hot move down to 72 and it is cold. There is no variance in temperature it is either hot or cold no in between. The dealership can not find anything wrong but sees the problem.

    purchased a 2002 Odyssey in April of 2002. Had the transmission drained and flushed (at dealer recommendation) at 60,000 miles. During Nov 2004 with 66,000 miles, the "D" indicator light began flashing. Took the van to the dealer who advised that the tranmission was failing and needed to be replaced. Honda has agreed to replace the transmission if I pay $826. I might as well by a Kia for my next van and get a 100,000 power train warranty.

    Why should you have to pay anything? Didn't they extend the warranty on the 2002 to 100,000?? I have a 2000 and had mine replaced for free at 95,000 miles under the extended warranty.

    I believe farmer3 is correct. I got a letter from honda extending the warranty on my 1999 ODY tranny to 100K might check with your zone office and or another dealership.

    My 2005 DVD/NAV/RES doesn't work in "auto" mode for the display. Day and Night mode work separately when I choose them, but auto only keeps the display in "day" mode.

    Any ideas on if this is a software issue (1.00.00.a or something like that last time I checked). Or is there a light sensor that is malfunctioning or clock input or other.

    Any others with same experience?

    Don't know if you're still following this discussion mk2003, but I just had the same "blown up" compressor failure on my 2001. Total system replacement quoted at $5300 which was negotiated down from $6200. I'm still considering my (few) options but sure like your $3700 price better.
    Between this and the transmission issue this is my first and last Honda.

    Check the dimming of the spedometer lights. When in full light, the NAVI stays in day mode. It's also a good trick to know if you use your headlights in the daytime and need to see the display.

    I have exactly the same DEAD RADIO problem on my 2000 Odyssey. I brought van to dealer and they replaced the fuse but no luck..The anti-theft light is blinking as you describe. HOW DID YOU RESOLVE?

    Also, both SLIDING DOORS are now BROKEN and need new ROLLERS (cost almost $500). I will think hard before buying another Odyssey...and did I mention the CLOCK needs replacement since the light is broken? Dealer says it's not the fuse.

    I also noticed a slight grinding noise during initial acceleration in D on my 05 Odyssey. It appears to only happen once during the acceleration, which supports the “start-up ABS self test” hypothesis. Afterwards, the noise cannot be heard again during slow or fast acceleration (my test was only about 10 minutes though). On a level-road, I stopped my vehicle and removed the key. I then started the engine again, and sure enough, only during the initial acceleration can I hear the slight grinding sound, and then it doesn’t appear to happen again as long as the engine is on. I am glad that this “grinding” seems to only happen once after turning on the vehicle.
    I turned off VSA but can still hear the grinding at the beginning. The vehicle may be so new that the Honda Service Departments cannot yet fully diagnose. I will post again if anything changes. Right now, I don’t think that I will take the vehicle to the service department for assessment.
    I may email Honda directly for clarification on this “start-up” grinding noise.

    The clock needs replacement since the light is broken? My light has gone out twice and it was only be a bulb replacement. The dealer charged about $22.

    Your clock does NOT need to be replaced. I called Honda Corporation about my clock light not lighting. They said there had been a service bulletin issued about this. When I took my vehicle in for the transmission recall service, they replaced the bulb for the clock. It was truly the tiniest bulb I've ever seen. There was no cost to me. If you have any doubt about the validity of what is being said to you by your dealer, call Honda Corporation. I've found them to be very helpful. I think the number is in your warranty booklet that came with your Odyssey!

    I have an '01 Ody with 93k on it. This summer, while on vacation, got the check engine light. Called my dealer in KS and asked about it. Was told that I probably didn't click the gas cap three times. Loaded her up with hubby and three kids and left Ocean City, MD. Of course, in the middle of the night with everyone else asleep, I lose all power in the mountains of WV. I stood on the accelerator to get up the mountain and coasted as fast as I could to get ready for the next climb. She made it home with 83k and I took her into the dealer. Was told I was past 80k and out of luck. Had a somewhat civil conversation with service and we went back and forth. Finally told me they were doing me a favor and replacing valve under warranty. A few days ago, CEL back on and error code is the catalytic converter. Drove her to dealer and was told the two are not related. Called customer service and filed a complaint/case etc. Customer service told me two weren't related but when I asked them if what they were telling me was that the egr valve had no effect whatsoever on the cc, he would not confirm. My mindset is that bad egr probably heated cc. I have never had a problem with an egr or cc in any of my Hondas.....and most have had death by deer at almost 200k. I am really getting worried about this van. I am reaching that horrible 100k mark and I had expected her to make it 200k without a doubt. This van has everything done to it that is even suggested. I am still going back and forth with dealer and waiting to hear from Honda. I have purchased 5 Hondas from this dealer with the most recent being 5 weeks ago when my hubby got a completely loaded Accord.(For which he traded in his 99 with 175k on it and running like a top) Any ideas or suggestions? Has Honda missed on the Ody? Should I look at an SUV to haul everything because it has a dependable drivetrain? I am so disappointed but I have to have something in which to travel 3000k miles or so every summer to the beach but also seat my ever growing boys who are close to 6' at 14 and 12 and keep my daughter far enough away from the 12 year old so that they don't fight for 20 hours straight. Am I expecting too much from my Ody or should I look at a different vehicle to fit my needs? Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated.

    It's totally normal. It's the ABS pump pressurizing. My husband is a former Honda/Acura tech and a few years ago when I had my first Honda I freaked out over it. He explained what it was and went into great detail. It's a shame that the service departments can't explain things. Maybe they just don't want to be liable for a false diagnosis, who knows.
    We have a week old 05 Ody and it does the grinding after we pull out of the driveway---this sound is nothing to worry about.

    I experienced this yesterday and remembered reading your post about this. I tried all the suggestions about adjusting the panel lights, but like you said, the display continues to remain in the "day" mode--even in "auto". The screen was too bright at night and I had to manually change it to "night" and back again today. This is a small issue, but I would still like to know if there is a fix for this as well.

    Had breakin on T'giving PM while standing 30-40 ft. away on other side of block wall and did not hear a thing except for the creeps loud music. They broke passenger side sliding door glass,reached in and stole a small suitcase. What should we expect out of the factory alarm system? My son's '02 Civic's alarm goes off if I bump it too hard.

    Unless you payed extra for the shock sensor, the alarm would not detect a broken window. It only sounds if the doors or hood is opened.

    I'm so grateful for this forum! I have a week old 05 Odyssey and when I took it in to service today to have the crossbars put on, I mentioned the "grinding noise" that I only occasionally hear shortly after starting the car and going forward. The service tech said that this was the first he'd ever heard of this complaint and he suggested that maybe it had to do with the cylenoid (spelling??). He told me that the car needs to be "broken in" and that I need to let it warm up for a few minutes before driving it. He said if it continued to happen he'd check it out further at my first oil change. Well, on a lark I decided to check on this forum to see if anyone else was experiencing this, and low and behold, I now have an answer! Yeah! My husband hasn't driven the car yet and he would have panicked if it happened to him and I didn't have an explanation! He still can't believe we spent this much for a vehicle and I'm going to be parking in the back of parking lots, away from other cars for a long time!! I do love my new Odyssey!! Thanks again.

    I have a 2001 Odyssey EX that just turned 100,000 miles. It has been a great van with the exception of the power doors. The doors are giving us constant problems(won't open, won't close, won't latch). I clean the contacts, pull the fuse to reset the error codes, re learn the door sequence, un hook the battery, everything I can think of.
    My family hates the power doors, can I make them manual sliders like an LX has? Does anyone know how to do this?

    Yes, I had this happen on my 02 odyssey. They put the dynamic damper from accord, minimal to no change. They also checked the ECU, everything was fine. Have to live with it, unless Honda reprograms the 4th to 5th gear shift points (i guess). I was hoping they would since it's kind of annoying when cruising around 50mph and 1500rpm, i am sure you noticed that if you just move up 100 rpm, it goes away. let me know if the fix it.

    I have a 4 month old 2004 Ody with about 2000 miles and recently I began hearing a resonating noise that sounded like a radio static noise coming from the dash board area when driving above 45 mph. I turned off the radio and checked for any loose objects in the glove compartment and other smaller draws/pockets that may contribute to the noise. But the noise still persists from the dash area.

    Has anyone ever experienced this? If yes, how did you fix it?

    Any advise will be appreciated.

    PS: I like the Ody very much in the way it drives and handles.

    I am the original owner of a 2001 Odyssey. It has 120k and I missed the EGR recall. Of course the check engine light is on. I have a copy of the Honda service manual but I cannot find the exact location of the EGR valve anywhere on either the intake nor the exhaust manifold. According to the manual, a little spraying with a carburetor cleaner to the EGR valve and ports may do the trick.. Can someone please help me find it on the engine??? Thank you.

    I did some digging this weekend and found the source of the of the noise.

    The noise was caused by a loose, dry, small leaf that got caught in the inlet air duct area located just below the hood and centered with the dash. At 45+ mph, the air flow caused the leaf to dance around in the confined area causing the irritating noise. Removing that leaf and a test drive verified the fix - it is great to hear the sweet, melodious, refined engine sound clearly again!

    I wonder if the Honda garage would have found the noise source that quickly!

    Can somebody please help me fix the problem with wind noise in an '05 ODY EX-L ? Is it coming from the wind shield, moon roof, or the cross bars? Can somebody please direct me to the exact location (in detail please with pictures if posted on the forums)of the problem so I can tell my dealer and service manager...they have no clue and say it is normal. The van is great EXCEPT for this dreadful noise!!! Please help.
