I believe that the cross bars are an option to the roof rack side rails. I do not have the cross rails on my Ody but I could buy it aftermarket to fit on my Ody's side rails.

I would remove the cross rails and see if the wind noise disappears....

There may be a few others floating about, but this is what I remember as the fix.

For those experiencing it now, when were your vans made (you can tell by the last 5 digits of the vin, or look on the door sticker). I'm assuming (hoping) this will be addressed as a running change, so newer production should have it fixed at the factory.

I also have this same grinding noise. I have noticed 4 times already. For me, it has been happening after I leave the car off overnight and in the morning after backing from my driveway and putting it in drive, when the transmission is changing from 1st to 2nd gear I hear and feel a grinding noise. Can't reproduce a second time right away. Did you have a resolution on this yet? I am wondering if there is a tech note of some kind on this problem.

I just bought a 2003 Honda Odyssey for my wife and it lurches or jumps at about 55mph or 1500 rpm. I decided to see who else has this problem and read quite a few comments on this in this message board. They are: 3564,3590,3600,3608,3612,3613,3623,3635,3640,3650,3682 and make mine 3683? I test drove it at different speeds and 55 mph is the problem speed. WIth the car in the driveway I held my foot on the brake and gave it gas and 1500 rpm was the magic number just like many other people. Fortunately it sounds like the EGR is the problem? If somebody else found something other than that I would love to know. Really hoping I didnt make a big mistake. This van only has 19,000 miles on it.

that sounds like the ABS self-check (initializing). It is actually normal and is supposed to happen when you first start driving forward like that.

    Hello,
I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey and I am thinking of chaning spark plugs. The plugs are located 'deep' in the engine head-are the plugs easy to change? Do I need any special tool other than a deep socket and wrench?
    Thanks in advance.

For the plugs, you probably need an articulated extension. It will also help to be triple jointed.

COnsidering it is really a 1-time expense, I would pay to have it done. That way, if someone breaks a coil pack or some other expensive piece, they will have to pay to fix it!

Yes, I was able to change all the plugs without any problems. I did buy an extension-that helped a lot. Thanks.

The way Honda designed the power doors in the Ody does not easily permit a manual override should the motors malfunction. Chrysler vans were smarter in this respect. Their design permits them to function as a manual door should the power system become inoperative.

It's entirely possible to operate the Odyssey doors manually. In fact, it's easier than in previous models.

Bot too likely a person would ever need to do this but you sure can!

I have a 04 EX-L Odyssey Van that I have brought into the dealership for the power window problem. They seem can't figure out whats going on with it. I can't put the window down on the driver side control for the passenger side, but it will work on the passenger side just fine has anybody had this problem before? Plus when I got it from my Parent from another State on the window sticker it said DO NOT SELL A DEMO. They are going to call the Honda Service Tech and ask about the power window problem. I love the Van very much and I enough driving it.

I have a month old 05 LX, recently while driving on the interstate, i notice a rattle on the drivers side dash board area. Made an appointment and took it to the dealer, who called me the next day and said it was fixed, so i picked up the car and as soon as i got on the interstate the noise was back, turned around and took it back to the dealer, when i got back to the dealer notice that they had scratched molding in the instrument panel area, worse the instrument panel was not put in properly a complete mess. Had to leave van at dealer for couple of more days. Will pick it up on 12.14.04 They did give me a new 05 EX loaner. Any advise on how to handle this if the work is not right the second time. the dealer did say they would replace the scratched molding with brand new one.

I have a question regarding repairs....can we as consumers take a brand new vehicle under warranty for repairs or with complaints of new problems to any dealer of our choice or only to the one from whom the vehicle was originally purchased from. Thanks in advance for any answers.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
I am sure that you can take it to any dealer for warranty for repairs.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
You can take it to any dealer but dealers are not obligated to do warranty repairs.

I just filled the gas tank of my '05 Touring w/NAV & RES for the first time. I reset the trip odometers and everything zeroed out except the average MPH, which remains at 16 mph.

Is there something I'm missing to reset this?

I checked the owner's manual and it appears that avg. mph, mpg, and trip odometer should all return to 0 when reset.

Is anyone aware of a fix for this?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Hello!

We have a 2004 that we leased in Jul. '04. I hear a "thump" once in a while mainly during braking. I assumed that it is due to the fuel tank slushing problem, but am not sure. Any thoughts?

    Regards,

Our 2003 has the same noise sometimes. I am sure it is the fuel slosh noise.

I have been looking everywhere for a way to change the odyssey frontal disc brakes. I have an 01' and my brakes squeal very loudly whenever i press the brake. I really dont want to take it to honda or some other shop because i know it should be very simple, i just dont get how to do it. is there any online source that could help me?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Oh man! PLEASE, unless you have the necessary skills and equipment, leave this important job to a pro. If it's squaling that loudly you have probably already ruined your rotors!
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Gee, I swapped out the rotors and pads on my '99 Quest a year ago and it wasn't too hard. I left the fluid changing and bleeding to the shop.

We have a blurb about how to do it here on Edmunds:

How To Change Your Brake Pads

Getting a C clamp if you don't have one is a good idea.

I don't know...I would think working on the brakes would be unwise if one hadn't done it before or have some experience in auto repair.

Wrapping your vehicle around a telephone pole might not be worth the $60 you'd save by doing it yourself.

If your are mechanically inclined and motivated, changing brake pads and rotors are very easy to do. Yes, you do need a big C clamp(at least 4" size) to push the disc cylinder back into the housing in order to complete the job. I taught my two young sons to do it by showing them how on one of our 5 vehicles.

The problem with those "$60" advertised jobs is that it would end being a $500+ job as the garage shop scares/sucks you into doing other supporting or unnecessary brake work. I have seen it happen to many folks, especially women.

One good practice is to replace the brake fluid yearly in the reservoir in the engine compartment. Very simple use a turkey baster to suck out the brake fluid and then pour in fresh fluid. The ideal way is to bleed out all the fluid from the system, but I believe that changing the fluid yearly in the reservoir is an adequate compromise.

The same can be done as well for your power steering.

Could anyone who experienced "wind noise" comment on whether they have roof rack cross bars installed? I just spoke to my dealer and he said that might be the problem. I am not absolutely certain if the noise is in fact due to the "cowl" as mentioned on this forum because I believe I hear the noise overhead, i.e roof. Please help in steering the dealer to the exact cause of the wind noise problem as there may be more than one reason for this sound.

I just took delivery of my new Ody three weeks ago. I noticed lots of wind noise and rattles coming from the dash, behind the driver and near the 2nd row passenger side door. Tech at dealer said this was common in the '05's. Has anyone considered undercoating to quiet some of the road noise?
  • wpalkowskiwpalkowski Member Posts: 493
'00 EX. Have the Cross Bars on the van. Suddenly developed howling wind noise during the winter. Took off cross bars and it made no difference. Turns out the we damaged the front windshield weather stripping while scraping snow and ice. Dealer replaced the weather strip where we had lifted it up and this solved the problem

I too have the same problem.received my 05 ex-l on 12/1/04.two days later noticed the whistling sound from right front windshield and a "clunking" sound from passenger side sliding door.the dealership kept the van for three days and told me every thing had been fixed.wife took it home.i drove it four days later and this time more wind noise coming from both side of the windshield and still hear the "clunking" noise from the sliding door(i think it's from the sliding arm under the door on the track)the dealer told me they had replaced the windshield the first time, but they will take care of it again.i keep my finders crossed now.they told me they would need my van for at least 4 to 5days to fix (or replace) the wind shield.wondering if after the second time,i still have the same problem, would this be considerd a lemon law case?i have never heard of a WINDSHIELD leaking related filing.any info will help.best regards to every body and have a safe and healthy hollidays.

You might want to have them check the cowling at the base of the windshield first. Apparently sometimes it is warped and replacing it fixes the noise issue. This has come up several times on the Odyssey board.

The front wheel bearings on my 2000 Odyssey just had to be replaced at 85000 miles. Seems a little early to me.... anyone have similar experience?
  • dave594dave594 Member Posts: 218
The bearings on my front left wheel started to make noise after about 45,000 miles when I replaced my original tires. Finally replaced them around 60k.
  • arayclinarayclin Member Posts: 6
Both of the front bearings of my 2000 Odysey were replaced at 57,000 miles. According to my mechanic, the van is just too heavy for these bearings to handle. Now my van does not pull to the right anymore
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,953
saw on another Ody forum that there is a TSB out on the cowling wind noise problem. Seems that the fix is some kind of seal. The vin range was up to 22 or 23K someplace.

On my 2000 Odyssey I have had a series of problems with the sliding doors where the door fails to close fully, or where the door closes but it doesn't register as closed, so the beeper goes off. It seems the switch assembly on the door frame, which contacts the 'probes' on the door, is where the problem.

My dealer has addressed this problem several times without charge but in the most recent case the switches had to be replaced at a $500+ cost to me. It seems from reading this board that the problems have been common enough that Honda ought to do something about it. Was wondering if it was worthwhile to start a letter writing campaign to Honda.

I am happy to report that the wind noise I was hearing --mostly over the roof---is now much improved. It turns out that the cross barrs on the roof rack were improperly installed (BY THE DEALER!!!!!!) I diagnosed the problem after reading the instructions for the cross bars (available as PDF file on H and A website for honda accessories---see above on edmunds--) After studying the diagram and looking above my van at the cross bars, it was immediately obvious that the cross bars were placed incorrectly. It is relatively easy to fix and it took the dealer not even 10 minutes to fix! Hope this helps som people....Enjoy your Odyssey!!!!
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
I suggested the cross bars as a source of wind noise awhile back to someone. If the noise disappears with the bars removed, then the source is obvious.

I do not have crossbars on my Ody. However I do suspect that there will some wind noise though at high speeds, especially above 70-75mph. Have you observed that?

I've had my Odyssey for a month. Took it today on our first big road trip (3 hours) which was really about the first time my husband has ridden in my car. We were both horrified by the way it rode on the freeway. Rough, rough ride even on pavement that looked smooth. We tried different speeds...still bad. We stopped and checked the pressure in the tires...they were fine (about 34 lbs). My daughter in the third row literally bounced all the way to Grandma's house. She thought it was fun at first (in a warped 9 yr old way) but was miserable before we arrived. Has anyone else had this experience? I keep reading about how this minivan rides so nice...like a car, etc....This is way worse than my husband's SUV. The car also rattles and is noisy and my husband thinks we got a lemon. We researched minivans for 6 years while we saved our pennies to buy one. We keep our vehicles FOREVER so I talked my husband into "the best" minivan. But this is ruining our Christmas and my husband wants to just sell the van back for whatever we can get and get out. Has anyone else experienced this horrible ride? Any ideas on what can be done to fix it or are we stuck?
  • rockycow33rockycow33 Member Posts: 76
Take the car to a dealer and voice your complaint. Have them check wheel balance and if that is ok check for out-of-round condition.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
    Good suggestion!

    Just some initial diagnosis...

If the out of balance or out round condition is in the front tires, you would feel the vibration/shimmy/bumps more in the steering wheel. If it is in the rear tires, you would feel it more on your behind while seated.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
It's hard for any of us to determine what "bumpy" means to that poster. My first thought were severly overinflated tires but that wasn't it.

Improper wheel balance normally causes vibrations and not "bumpiness".

Never heard anything like this before!

After months of mulling over buying a brand new '05 Ody or Sienna, I bought a used 2000 Granite Green Odyssey. I feel that the new Ody is a big improvement but still exhibits the same characteristics as the previous generation (rough ride, drumming on highway, rattles).

The van has 93k on it and is very clean. Paid $9k for it - any comments? One catch, after driving it for a couple of days I realize it needs a new tranny.

I called my local Honda dealer before buying it and they said they would fix it under the 100k mile warranty extension if needed.

Did anyone go through this process? Is Honda reluctant to give away a "free" tranny? I know GM, Ford, Chrysler would not do this for free.
  • rockycow33rockycow33 Member Posts: 76
After the problems Honda had with their trannies, I got a notice that my 1999 ody tranny was warranted for 100K. I don't know if this applies to second owner or not. But it is surely worth a check. Good luck

This morning I discovered a huge puddle of motor oil (appeared to be one to two quarts of oil) under my 1995 Odyssey. The origin of the leak appeared to be where the oil filter housing joins the motor. Is this a common problem for Odysseys? (I just purchased it a month ago). Any advise/help appreciated.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
Like the CRV problem/TSB, it maybe worth while to check to see if there may be two rubber gaskets on the oil filter, i.e. the old gasket from the old filter and the new gasket from the existing filter. If there are two gaskets, the seal would not be tight between the filter housing and the engine causing the leak.

You can easily check this by unscrewing the filter and checking for the (double?)gaskets on the filter itself or if any remained on the engine block. Whenever I perform oil changes on my vehicles in my garage, I always check for the gasket on the old filters.

In the CRV case, the dripping oil was right over the hot exhaust pipe causing a fire in some cases.

    Good luck.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
At 93K, I would quickly insist that the Honda dealer replaces my tranny before the 100K comes up. You may want to get Honda America alerted as well. Don't let them drag their feet for the nxt 7K.

Honda America has some TSBs/recalls on this problem - which you can refer to.

Of course, some media publicity, if necessary, would help if you encounter resistance.

The odometer on my 2003 Odyssey EX and my 2002 Odyssey LX both run 2.5% fast at 70 mph. When I drive at a slower speed, the error creeps up to nearly 3%. Has anyone brought a similar problem to the attention of their dealer? Was the problem fixed? I asked several persons if I could drive their vans and they also have this problem. Both of my vans were purchased in Arkansas, but vans from Texas, Illinois, and Missouri also have the problem. I have driven and tested 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 Odyssey vans with the same results. The odometer error will shorten all applicable warranties and decrease resale value.
  • jkutchkajkutchka Member Posts: 2
I know you wrote your comment some time ago, but what you noticed is the same problem I have had with all three Odyssey vans which I have owned. (1999, 2002, and 2003) Turning 100 miles into 104 shortens or did shorten your warranty and how do you convince someone that your van doesn't have the miles on it that the odometer registers.
  • blackexv6blackexv6 Member Posts: 503
Just got a call from my Honda service manager...they are replacing my trans for free under the 100k extended warranty. I am the second owner and they still honored the warranty.

I was experiencing delayed shifting from first to second gear. Also, on a 15mph roll and then accelerate, the trans would slam to first gear.

The trans is new (or rebuilt) from Honda and will be shipped in a crate w/new torque converter. Will be fixed by Friday...Honda service is by far the best that I've ever come across.

Hopefully, the engine will last another 100k miles.

I'm glad that you are getting a replacement transmission. I'd have been very surprised if Honda's response had been any different, these people may not have a perfect product but they do stand behind it.
