    Hi,

    Just wondering if anyone else has this. On my 2005 EXL-RES when I put a white paper in my top glove box and close the glove box door there is a slit between the door and the dash that I can see the paper through the opening. The slit is about 1/4 inch.

    Has anyone else tested this? Seems like there is a gasket or something missing on mine.

    No, this seems to be a common issue. It's pretty much just the way it is designed. It is possible to adjust the door a little, but I don't know if you can completely get rid of the gap.

    If it bothers you that much, you can probably rig up a gasket of some sort. Or just put something black on top!

    Hi, in my 2001 Honda Ody engine check (EC) and TCS lights were coming on from time to time. next time i'd start the car EC light are on TCS is off. decoder says that the gas tank cap is not tight, not true. i spent about 1 hour at this forum reading messages (thank you all) and figured that the most probable cause is the EGR valve. i went back to dealer and told him about that. they checked - yes, the EGR valve was no good. replaced without charging me $400. good luck. i hope it will help somebody. ;)

    What were the symptoms of your bad tranny?

    Just traded my '00 in today with 77,000 - before any tranny problems showed up.

    I've been watching this forum for a few weeks now. Isn't this the Honda Odyssey OWNERS forum. If so, then why are all of these Chrysler/Dodge, etc. van owners and Honda bashers on here giving "advice" like "if you had this or that problem, why would you buy another Odyssey? etc.. :P

    If I want the driving excitement you are referencing I wouldn't be driving my wife's MINIVAN!!!! I'd drive my VW Passat. The Honda is a nice van (probably nicer than our T&C), but I really don't comprehend the driving excitement argument when it comes to minivans.

    The reason of course to help out a fellow minivan owners solve their vehicular problems....as well as to point out the error of their ways.

    You might try this (may be misaligned rather than missing a piece):

    How to fix misaligned upper glove box
    ... To re-align the upper glove box, open both the upper and lower glove boxes. Then look under the upper glove box, and you will see phillips-head screws on the sides of it - loosen them up, adjust the glove box, and then tighten back again. You will need to use a long phillips screwdriver for this job.

    Add me to the list of 2005 Ody owners who had an overhead light (rear of van) left on and drained the battery over a period of days. Not sure how it was left on and we still love the van. Just had to jump start it. Now we always turn the "all interior lights off" button when we exit the car at home, just in case. Too bad the lights don't dim automatically. Such an odd thing to overlook. :D

    I usually don't comment on the Honda Site, just the Honda vs. DCX area...but it's great to watch the Honda site for ideas I may need some day i.e....buying gutter guard at home depot to save my A/C condensor, or how to align my glovebox door!!! See, we don't have any major issues with our vans, so we live vicariously thru you owners.

    Ohh there is a funny trend going on in the DCX problem area though. I posted weeks ago, looking for people with problems on their 2005s. All we get are bogus posters who instantly join and comment on the same day about some major disaster with their DCX van, even I asked over a few weeks ago now??? Hmmmm

    Still when I look at the activity on the Honda site, it's still significantly more.

    What you and other Ody owners should do is buy a "portable" jumper pack. I picked one up at Home Depot for around $30.00 and store it in the back of the van in case I need to jump the battery. The jumper pack is very small in size so it takes up very little space.

    Honda has dropped the ball on this one, maybe in the future they will include a timer feature to prevent a dead battery.

    Now, I don't own an Ody, I just want to help others when they are having problems. That's what these boards are for!

    That is strange, the 2002 Ody I had would shut down all interior lights after 30 minutes. I wonder if they pulled that feature. Of course, I never actually tested that feature...

    The way I understand it, the older and '05 Ody will turn off the lights after 30 minutes IF you leave a door open. If you manually turn on a light (with the individual button on the light) it will stay on forever, or when the battery is drained whichever comes first. I'm also used to vehicles that shut-down the lights after a set time period, regardless of how they were turned on, in order to save the battery. It was fairly common to start our Tahoe and find a couple interior lights had been left on. We've been trying to be careful since the Ody doesn't do this. It's hard to tell sometimes since the lights stay on after you open doors, etc. The only problem with using the "all off" switch upon exiting, is if you go to leave at night you don't have any interior lights when you get in.

    My 2000 Odyssey has been doing the same thing. On the second trip to the dealer they said that the brakes and drums are OK. But the drums have a design flaw that causes the noise. The only way to fix it is to replace the perfectly good brake drums with the new and improve designed brake drum which eliminates this noise. $350 Did you find a cheaper way to fix the problem?

    You have to compare apples to apples.

    In the minivan category, all the accolades/awards go to the Ody for obvious reasons.

    Actually, the CTS-V and Maxima in our other family cars are more exciting cars to drive in the sedan category. Power Mon!.

    I am watching the SRT8 as a potential adder/replacement to my family as well. 425hp to start; maybe 500hp with the induction cooler!

    ha ha...you got them good on that one Karen. But, K-Mart did away with the blue light special thing about a decade ago. Perhaps you shop more upscale now...Penny's perhaps? :P

    I agree that it is a major design goof not having all the lights shut off. The only reason to leave the map lights on is if someone sits in the car to read. So, if they shut off after 30 minutes, just make it so they can be turned on (and stay on). So, anytime they are turned on after the car is off they can stay on, or something along those lines.

    My VOyager had this feature 10 years ago. I wonder if it was designed this way for a specific reason, or (more likely) was just an oversight.

    It would be real nice if they came up with a software patch that could be retroed!

    Also, there is a gadget you can instill on the battery (I think it is called battery tender or minder) to solve the problem. It monitors drain, and if it senses the battery is getting too low, it will shut off power to the lights somwhow (not sure about the radio and stuff like that). Still better than a dead battery!

    That is one of the few things I have found to be of issue in our 00 Odyssey. In 2002, I hit the switch for the light above the tailgate pulling out a car seat. It was in an airport lot - got back a week later to a dead battery.

    Last night we were on our way to a minor league ball game and the van was dead. Decided to deal with it when we got home. I discovered the reading light in the 3rd row was on. That was strange - our kids never sit back there but my wife informed me that she had extra kids in the car.

    I'll be buying a new battery tonight as I killed it a couple of weeks ago with a portable compressor.

    agreed - one of the only misses i could find with our '03... we end up leaving the button switched to off, but i'd love to leave it in mid-position so the wife would have lights when entering the vehicle. the kids always seem to be playing with the over-head lights though. luckily for me, both times it happened, i noticed the cabin lights on in the morning, and the vehicle started right up.

    someday, maybe it already exists, a manufacturer will design the car to notify the owner via the FOB that something is amiss. i think there are security systems that do that now, but low-tire pressure, oil level, battery level or lights on would be welcomed automation additions.

    Just had to comment on the center tray. It is one of the many things I love about the Odyssey. It is the perfect place to stick your purse, completely out of sight! I am on my second Oddy and really miss that space when I don't have it.

    Honda is too late to party with Home Depot. Ford is already in bed with them. Buy a Ford pickup, get a $500 gift card from Home Depot. Haven't seen the ad yet? I don't think there is yet a F150 Home Depot edition yet, however!

    Honda did drop the ball on the interior lights however. Our 1996 Caravan shuts them off after a period of time, and this has saved me a dead battery on at least a couple of occasions.

    No. I checked with few my friends who have Odyssey or Acura MDX. Some of
    them have the same problem. Since now I have many friends have the same
    problems, I feel "better". You are right, it is the damn drum cause the squeak!
    But Honda won't do anything to replace it because the drums are in Honda's
    standards. What a shame!! My 10 year old Camry brakes better than My wife's
    03 Odyssey.

    By the way, I did notice that after a car wash, the squeak goes away for few days.
    May I should water the brakes once a while. If you find a solution, please share
    with us. Have a good day.

    If you want to render drum brakes virtually useless, then water IS a good solution. Perhaps you get a squeal noise from the drum brakes in the rear because either the drums or shoes are glazed. Or perhaps the drums are out of tolerance for some reason and the shoes are not fully making contact. Water makes the sounds go away likely because it acts as a friction barrier for the shoes on the drums. It's about as much of a solution as simply removing the brakes, but it is a good indicator of the problem. Having it checked out by a reputable independent mechanic would be the best course of action. If Honda can't fix it, find someone who can. (And yes, I realize the water thing was said in jest).

    I have read a lot about, "when should the initial oil change be done?" in different forums, but none have answered the question straight out...

    I too, am about to do my initial oil change for my ODY but still am very much confused with the question of WHEN?...

    Is it during the 3000-3700 mile mark? or do I have to follow what the maintenance minder on the gauge says? when it reach 10% or 0%?..

    This forums are very informative to new ODy owner lie myself...More power to this site..

    Follow the maintenance minder in the dash. Period.

    If the factory felt that it was useful to change the initial oil earlier (say in the 3000-3700 mile range), it would have been a VERY simple thing to just program into the maintenance minder, just as the maintenance minder keeps track of mileage for all the other factory recommended maintence items ('A' and 'B' levels of service). Personally, I would change the oil when it was in the 10% to 15% range.

    do it when the minder hits 15%. That's when you will see the minder every time you start the van (on the EX at least). I just did mine at about 4,700 miles (just about 6 months).

    I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey and I want to remove some exhaust restrictions. Apart from the catalytic converter, there are 2 resonator pans (one big quare & a cylindrical one) and a muffler with a resonator.
    I'd like to know what benefits I can reap by removing the two resonators and installing a cherry bomb muffler.Someone please advise me on the pros & cons. Thanks

    You said that your van is an '03? If so, the rear service brake is disk, not drum. The very center hub does contain a mini drum, but that is a cable operated parking brake only, and not what comes into play when you step on the brake pedal.

    Disk brake squeak is usually due to vibrating pads, and can often be fixed by adding a dampener (kind of adhesive spray) to the pad backing plate. Try an independent brake shop.

    Today when I was driving my 2005 Odyssey SLOWLY over some bumps especially speed bumps in our community with driver window open, I heard some air hissing sound coming from the rear driver side. It sort of like the sound when you push an air cylinder. Is this a normal response from the suspension system? If window was closed then I could not hear anything.

    Yes. It is completely normal. It is just the suspension compressing. Many of my cars have done this.

    Thanks for the reply. But the sound is kind of obvious especially when I drive in a quiet community. Is it becuase the van is big? I don't hear the sound with my 99 Mazda protege.

    I have searched the discussions and have not seen this one yet. My radio will change stations (up or down the dial by 1 unit) when I hit a road bump or if I tap on the dash around the radio. Of course it does not do it for the service guys. Any thoughts would be great.

    It's a good idea to read the owner's manual. It explains how the temperature only adjusts when you drive above certain speeds over a certain period of time.

    Ba-dum-bump-tish.....Good one. Yet for $30K I would think it would come with a guy to do that for me. This is the 3rd problem I have had with my dream car in as many months. Very frustrating.

    Your problem, as described, is a first for this column and may be an isolated and unique case.

    I would think that they would replace the radio to see if that fixes it.

    I guess that the radio does not respond to the bumps and taps of the Honda service technician. :)

    I honestly can't believe what I am reading on this thread. Are you really considering buying a USED '02 van with 48K miles for almost $21,000. I realize Hondas are good cars(I've owned many), but that price seems outrageous for the miles and yr of the Odyssey. I recently purchased a brand new '05 T & C Touring model (completely decked out) for $23,700. I understand the T&C is not a Odyssey, but......

    I whole heatedly agree fish8. That is way to much money for that old of a van. Mac, I know how much you like Hondas with their sport handling. But I would never encourage a guy to buy that van at that age and with that kind of mileage, for $21,000. That is a total rip off. That thing will be four years old in a couple of months. He could put a couple of more thousand with it and buy a new van and get a 75,-100,000 warranty.

    This is just a guess, but most 'gas struts' up until a few years ago were double tube low pressure units. Within the past few years, a number of manufacturers have begun to use single tube high pressure gas shocks/struts on their newer vehicles. I have not listened to hear the difference, but I remember reading that they sound and respond somewhat differently from traditional units.

    We just had the radio removed and tested and reinstalled. It appears to have stopped. It would indicate a loose connection somewhere. This is my 7th Honda and my most expensive one yet. It is disappointing that I have had 3 issues with it so far. I literally had noting but routine maintenance on the previous 6. Thanks for the chuckle. I guess the technician could not even "play" the radio. TTFN.
