To compare ride at different daily temps it's best to check tires inside your garage if you have one at a fairly constant morning temperature. Be aware that tires add about a pound for each 10 degrees of outside temperature. When driving they heat up the way way.

Your gauge also may vary. I have 3 gauges and they are 3 different readings. I use the middle one as correct. I asked a tire store how they calibrate--they just buy a new pencil gauge every couple of months and compare with the older ones to guess which is the accurate reading.

Testing the feel of the ride and driving response is the best way to get the max pressure for mileage without losing the good ride.

    Thanks All for the replies!

    Here are the developments...

The Honda District manager along with our Service manager drove the car after finally replacing the ROTORS!!! along with the drive shaft, engine mounts, bearings, and transmission...

Problem STILL THERE! So Honda has themselve now stated that we will start the buyback paperwork.

    YEA!!!!! NEW ODDESSY!!!

Now question for ALL... do we get another Honda Odd? Move on to another brand... can we get a 2006?

For those wondering... we had a black on black 05 touring with dVd and navi, 3400 miles, multiple accessories, PLUS aftermarket Xenons.

BEAUTIFUL but man I'm a little gunshy... what do you folks think?

i too have same noise on mine, just 1 week old with 300 miles on it.
can someone pls who had same issues and got it fixed will reply to this.
i checked for spare tire and Jack every thing looks good.
  • dsrtrat2dsrtrat2 Member Posts: 223
If your noise happens only once after you have backed up and then put on the brakes in forward motion it is often the brake pads sliding into their "forward" location. This has been mentioned several times. My '04 does this and is not loud, but enough that TW wants to know what that is.

Hi, I noticed that you've gone to the dealer about a grinding sound when applying the brakes. We've had that problem too. Brought it to the dealer once and they said all looked normal. Did they say anything else worthwhile to you about this problem? Am worried something might be wrong with the brakes. If you can please email me at questor1964@yahoo.com. Thanks!

My 1997 Honda Odyssey D4 light started flashing, while the speedometer went completely crazy and the odometer stopped functioning, all at the same time and after leaving home and driving a few miles! If I turn the car off and back on the problem disappears, but comes back again after driving for a few miles. If I drive a while longer, the Engine Check light comes on too. I bought this car second hand a few months ago, and have recently noticed the car gas efficiency has significantly come down (if this information helps in any way). Is there a reasonable explanation to this problem? Is this a problem that could be easily and inexpressibly solved? Do I need to exorcize the vehicle or take it to the dealer? Thanks in advance to whoever cares to respond back.
  • lastwraithlastwraith Member Posts: 350
Have someone scan the car to retrieve the codes, AutoZone etc will do this for free at least once I believe. This will give you a good starting point to figure out what is going on, and it will help everyone here as well. The D4 light flashing usually indicates there is a current problem, likely logged by the Transmission Control Unit. Your problems could easily be caused by a dying VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) but getting the code is your best bet for good advice from here. Also, how many miles on the Ody?

I'd check the vehicle history and make sure nobody died in the thing. It could be the spirit of the deceased owner (probably a used car salesman) thinking he is alive and still in control of operating the vehicle. He has not yet passed over into the light. :surprise:

If it was demon possessed I would think the van would be trying to drive you into a ditch or other unhealthy hazzard. Proceed with caution. If you would like the name of a good Catholic priest let me know.

I'm new to this forum. I'd appreciate help from anyone out there that has experience with my problem. I have read quite a few other posts that describe a problem quite similar to mine. My wife has a 2001 Odyssey. She tried starting it and everything was completely dead, no dash lights, no nothing. She did say that she heard a clicking noise coming from under the dashboard. Probably a relay tripping. When I came home to check out the problem, the first thing I did was try to open the power door locks with the remote key. I got zero response. Seemed completely dead. I opened the door with the key. I tried to start it up. I got absolutely no response, no dash lights, nothing, no sign of life and no clicking noise. I decided to try and jump start the car. Before hooking up the cables I verified that the battery connections were good - they were. The green "eye" on the battery also indicated that the battery is probably charged. I proceeded to jump start and was immediately successful. I removed the cables and then shut off the engine. I then started the engine with no problem. Battery sounded strong as ever. Repeated starting and shutting off 5 or 6 times. Don't know what to do next. I know the problem will come back.
Any help you folks can offer is much appreciated.

Anyone know about a reliable, good and trustworthy Honda mechanic OR Honda dealer service manager to handle Odyssey repairs and maintenance in the Wash Metro area and specifically in Maryland?
  • ads1978ads1978 Member Posts: 6
Should you get another new Odyssey or maybe something else?
I can't make that call for you. If it was me, I would chalk it up to the fact that I got the lemon. Remember. If you take the new Odyssey, you will start your 3 yr warranty all over again. You will still have the lemon law on your side. If you really like the Odyssey, then maybe stay with the Odyssey. If not, the only other van I would reccomment is the Sienna.
But just make sure and stay firm. If you take the new Odyssey, make sure you get the EXACT same model, and make sure you do not put a single dime out of your pocket. And if you decide to take the money and run? Make sure you get EVERY dime you paid to purchase the van.
Keep us apprised of what happens, and good luck.
  • jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,299
Why would he get every dime he paid to purchase the van? Honda wouldn't take off a certain amount of money for every month he drove his Ody?

Take the money and run... and go buy you a Sienna. I regretted buying my 2005 Odyssey EX-L... full of repairs and the clunking passenger noise (4 attempts to repair it and still is there) is very frustrating... NEVER AGAIN HONDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you do decide to go for another Ody, I would hang for a few weeks and invest in an '06. I have to believe that Honda has been logging plenty of complaints on the redesigned '05, and probably instituted a hundred minor changes after they built the last of them earlier in the summer. I would think that the '06's should start arriving in the next week or two?

Can't believe that they showed you such a memo.
The van has 2000 miles on it now and famous windshield whistling problem happened.
It is getting louder and louder.
Will call dealer after long weekend.
Oh my, I am getting nervous now as I don't know how many more problems down the road.
I traded in my Benz ML500 for this.
Benz has been very good until 3rd year. I wanted to get a roomier and better quality replacement.
Looked like I didn't do my home work very well.

I had the same problem with my 00' EX. Clicking noise coming from the dash and absolutely no power to any of the electrical systems. My battery was dead and was caused by my leaving the interior master light switch in the neutral position with the rear hatch not fully closed. Not sure why your battery showed the green eye...I jumped mine and set the master switch to "off" and haven't had the problem again.....good luck..

    Hello All,

Just a quick question. I just recently purchased an 03' Ody and the Battery is dead. I need to jump start it, but I cannot locate the grounding strap per the owner's manual. Which brings me to the next question. Must I use that strap or can I just use the negative terminal just the same.

Any specific instructions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Benson3

Grounding to any metal part of the engine or the main part of the frame should do the job.
  • ads1978ads1978 Member Posts: 6
Why wouldn't he get every dime he paid to purchase the van. It had only 3,000 miles on it, and 6 repairs, most of the major!!! Do you think that they would be bold enough to deduct a mileage useage? Technically they could, but if it was me, I would fight for every last dime. If they see that you are standing firm, they will do it. For a couple of dollars, Honda does not want to fight a lemon law case in court. They would lose hands down.

Usually with buy backs (in my experience) car companies duduct for mileage.

I just found out, with great disappointment, that my Yakima Rocketbox roof box does not fit the odyssey EX-L, because the roof rails are placed so far aft (so as not to overlap the sunroof?), and the tailgate spoiler hits the rear of the box. I'm afraid this will be a problem with any reasonable sized roof box because of these factors. Has anyone had similar problems?

I just ordered a new 06 Odyssey and was presented with the extended warranty for $2050.00 for 8 years or 120,000 miles. Has anyone bought this plan and do they think it was worth while?

The second plan they are selling is perma plate. A paintguard, fiberguard leatherguard and soundguard. Any thoughts?
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Sounds like all the money to me. I was offered 7yr/100k miles for $900.00. I didn't buy it, I don't keep vehicles long enough to every benefit. I'm not a fan of extended warranties anyway.
  • ads1978ads1978 Member Posts: 6
Be careful with the extended warranties. Is the extended warranty they want to sell you through Honda(I know someone who got an extended warranty from Toyota, and when their engine went, the mechanic they took it to would not use the warranty because the warranty company that they sold him on was worthless)? Do you plan on keeping the van until it dies? If so, then it may be a good investment for you. But here's a tip. That warranty does not cost them that much. They could be making anywhere from $500-$1,000 on that warranty. If you decide for it, haggle on the warranty price.

And regarding any of those other add ons. PLEASE do me a favor and skip it. No matter what the salesman tells you, they are all worthless. Any of those different "guards" are worth crap. I know firsthand.

Just bought an '05 Touring. Although my dashboard is clearly visible during the eveing or in the garage, when I am in full daylight, the scale markings between the 10's on the speedometer almost disappear and I cannot see the KPH scale. Since I wear sunglasses a lot, putting these on make the markings disappear. Thus I cannot see the markings indicating 25 or 35 or 45 mph. I guess if I drove somewhere where speed is indicated in KPH, I would only be able to drive at night since the scale disappears. Was at the dealer and their conclusion was "that is the way it works". Even at brightest setting the problem exists. I find this hard to believe that the dash would display this way in daylight. Comments?

You can buy Honda Care plans up to 3 yrs/36000 miles after purchase. You can save big by buying over the Internet. Check out http://www.jayhondacare.com/odyssey.htm for example. The dealer is making at least $700, depending on whether the plan has a $0 deductible or $100 deductible. I initially bought into the same scam, but I complained, got a refund and saved $600. Once confronted with Internet prices, the dealer offered to drop his price by $500!

I purchased my 7yr/100,000 mile 0 deductible extended warranty for $1400. This was for an 05 EX with leather, NAV and RES. I bought it from my dealer and they also set it up to be charged to my credit card on a monthly basis in 14 equal interest free installments.

Hi! I just got my 2005 odyssey about 2 weeks ago. It already has almost 1K miles to it since we took it from Ventura to San Diego. I have noticed that after i turn my engine on and step on gas there's noice coming from the gas pedal and it feels like the gas pedal is trying to hook unto something. Has anyone experienced this?
  • breindersbreinders Member Posts: 23
Yes!!! Same problem but with a Thule Mountaineer. I am so upset that the rails are so far aft - they could be up to a foot farther forward and still the cross bars would be behind the sun roof. By my visual observation the rails are farther back than those on other minivans and on other vehicles in general. What is Honda's rationale?

I plan to drill new mounting bracket holes in the box farther back from the existing holes. Looks like about moving the holes about 5" would allow the box to clear the spoiler. I am a little concerned about the effects of having more of the box forward of the front cross bar - extra lift forces at highway speed; weight distribution not being well balanced.

The Green Eye on the battery is not always an accurate indicator of your battery's health. As long as all 6 cells in your battery are still okay (meaning still retain 12+ Volts at about 2 Volts per cell), the "eye" will remain Green. However, having 12 Volts out of your battery does not mean the battery can still provide the current/Amps needed to get your Ody engine starter and electrical system going.
Sounded to me, replace your Ody's battery is the solution. Good Luck!

    Hi,

I am running into the same issue 2001 Odyssey with 77k miles. Checked the fuel cap and it looks good. The TCS light came on and immediately the check engine light came on. Drove 20 miles without any issues. Now the TCS is gone , but the check engine light stays on. Any help/advise is greatly appreciated. --Thanks in advance

I own a 2000 Odyseey which has behave perfectly until July when the check engine light came on. Honda told me it was the tranny and that since it had 104,000 miles on it, it was not under warrenty and would cost $6000 to replace. I took it to a different transmission place where it was rebuilt. A week later it had lost 2 quarts of fluid and the guy told me he needed a part that he could not get until the next week. After we reminded him that he had given us a years warranty, it was fixed in 15 minutes. We drove it a bit and the check engine light reappeared. He said it was the catalytic converter this time.

I am trying to figure out if what happened next could be related to the transmission or not.

I parked the car in my driveway and started around the car to open my daughter's door. Before I got a foot away the car went into reverse, broke through a wood fence, hit a gas tank and knocked it off its moorings and stopped on a big rock, 2 feet away from a 50 foot drop off. My daughter was uninjured but the van is totalled.

To add insult to injury, when I talked to the Honda service department they told me that if I had complained to Honda about the warranty not being honored because I was over 4000 miles they would have probably honored it.

My main question though is, is it possible that a faulty installed tranny could have sent the van into reverse from park under any circumstances?
  • just4fun2just4fun2 Member Posts: 461
I would think that a person that works for Honda or whatever car company would have a direct line to someone in charge that could do something instead of hoping that Honda might, perhaps, maybe or I hope so read these complaints.

When a person comes here to complain about the product that they paid for with their money, I don't see why someone else feels the need to defend that product. The bottom line is that they are having a problem and that's what's important, not the fact that your van is fine.

I thought that the "standard" of quality now a days was "not" to have large gaps in the interior. If you are not happy with your Ody, tell Honda that you will not buy another one in the future, they will get the message if people won't buy their product. People have more power than they think, use this power.

I recently bought a 2005 EX with dealer-installed RES and I believe the frequency to tune it to hear the audio throughout the car (the wireless heasdets work fine !!) was 88.3 But when I tune it to that, I am unable to hear it (even tried the frequencies mentioned in the manual around it too !!) . It had worked earlier. The dealer is too busy to answer my calls. I also tried increasing the volume to make sure I am not deaf.

Any tricks or am I missing something simple.

    Thanks

I recently bought a 2002 Odyssey. Some lights came on the dashboard.
    TCS and Maintenance picture.
I took it to my local garage and he said that the computer was broken and that it would cost over $1,000. I am totally shocked. It only has 88,000 kms
He also said that this was very unusual and that I should take it to the dealer and that because this was so unusual that they might consider the repair as part of a warranty???
Has this ever happened to anyone out there? Please help. I will take it to the ownership but I would like to have some info before I go. THANK YOU

I don't think it's true that the last of the 05's were built in the early summer. My 05 was built in August. The question is whether changes are institued on the fly as problems arise or not.

for my 2005 Odyssey does has the problem since the first day. I found it doesn't easy to close and leave one large gap which I can see through. however, I think I am ok with that. this car is still too new on the market. need time to adjust. just got a recall letter form Honda for both front air bag sensors not working fine. really scare me this one. don't know if they fix thier front door yet.

I seem to be having the same problem with my 2002 Honda Odyssey. Can you please tell me what your outcome was.
My garage said that I would need a new computer system which would cost over $1,000. I will be taking it to the Honda Dealership but I would like to know from your experience what excactly caused the problem and how it was solved.
can you also tell me the cost of your repair. Was it just a matter of having the computer re-set? Was it under warranty? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Can go bad but it's pretty rare. I would definatly get a second opinion. Some items are covered under the longer warranty that applies to some of the emission related items. I'm not sure that would apply to the computer but I would definatly ask.
  • rshtrsht Member Posts: 277
Not clear on what your mechanic had done to determine that your Ody needs a new computer...? The "Check Engine" light and some other warning indicators are only ON when the same abnormality occurs 3 times within a certain amount of miles, another words the same sensor (or group of sensors) was triggered by faulty condition(s) 3 times within so many miles. If your Ody computer is really all bad, would you still be able to run your car at all ?? Well, I guess there is the Safe Mode (sorry for the Microsoft term) to keep the car running.

FYI, my friend has a 2000+ (sorry I am not sure the exact year) Ody, since we don't have an ODB-II scanner to check for any codes, we simply reset the system by disconnect then re-connect the negative battery terminal. I guess my friend has been lucky, the "Check Engine" light never did come back on since (that was 4 months ago)....

I would be very interested to learn if your Ody is with the same glitch.. Please keep us updated, and best wish to you for a simple and inexpensive repair if at all.

I'm not complaining; we love our Ody (VIN in the first 20,000 vehicles). We took it in yesterday for the airbag sensor safety recall and they told us there were several things to fix, so they did them all at once. Some of these bulletins we knew nothing about. Here is what our receipt says:

    - Front and rear A/C temps do not match; replaced the climate control unit
    - Safety recall of front impact sensors; replaced both sensors
    - Lubricated driver and passenger side inner handles with special greasegun; greased fuse relay box connectors
    - Reprogram ECM/PCM, updated PCM software using HDS (not sure what this is)

And we had a broken rear tailgate spoiler that "popped" when we would start to close the tailgate. They replaced it. All of this was no charge.

    Just FYI.

"My main question though is, is it possible that a faulty installed tranny could have sent the van into reverse from park under any circumstances?"

Yes, it is possible. Perhaps the interlocks that prevent the transmission from shifting were not correctly set up, or a mechanical piece failed (which would be a transmission failure, not an install failure). I suspect your insurance company may want to examine that transmission.

    Glad your family is OK!
  • driverbri3driverbri3 Member Posts: 5
Yeah, I'd be worried about the unsupported front end of the box with that modification......However, I hate the idea of spending another couple of hundred to buy a less optimal, shorter box. Did the pre '05s have this problem? Come to think of it, I don't see many roof boxes on odysseys.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
Sorry, it was a generalization. Typically, it takes about 4-6 weeks or so for new vehicles to show up in showrooms from the time they roll down the assembly line. So assuming there was some line down time for minor retooling to address changes, I came up with that estimate. By early summer, I was thinking July (summer begins on June 21). That was accurate for traditional 'Detroit', but maybe not for a Japanese transplant.

Still, my point was to wait. Yes, major problems (I hope....) are addressed as running changes. But each year, automotive ad copy, and especially the press releases in September/October typically screams about the "100's of feature changes".

I just purchased an 06, and the glove box is misaligned on the left side. The gap is widest at the top at about 3/16", and at the bottom is at about 1/16". Also, when I look over from the driver's seat I can see the metal latch for the glove box with the glove box closed. I noticed these problems during the test drive. So, I looked at other three Odys on the lot, same problem with the misalignment, didn't check to see if I could see the metal latch because of poorly fitting door.
Obviously, the dealer can't do anything about it, so I bought the van and decided to live with it (crazy, I shouldn't have to . I just spent over $30k for it), and send some pictures to corporate saying how they should be ashamed and embarrassed to release such poorly designed/assembled product. It sure is an eye sore for a vehicle that suppose to be #1 in so many catagories.

I have a 2000 Odyssey and sorry to tell you this happen when the transmission went bad at 105K. Honda would not extend the warranty, $3K and new transmission. Have the codes checked.
