I do believe that that is the law in every state. You have less control of your vehicle this way, in case something happens you cannot avoid a situation by giving it gas.

I never do it because, intuitively, it seems like it would make it too difficult to respond to any unforseen conditions that may arise. Your point of picking up too much speed is a case in point! I grew up driving heavy, cumbersome rigs like tractors, loaded pickups, dump trucks, etc., so the term "coast" was not one readily used.....

That is interesting, but one must also consider the vehicle itself when considering "reasonable and prudent." For example, hauling a bulky or unbalanced load at 75 or even 65 is not my idea of reasonable OR prudent! But, if traffic is flowing at that speed, does that suddenly make it so? Not in my mind.... though then one must ask, depending on how slow that vehicle is going, whether it is prudent to even be on that route at that particular time! It is in Minnesota, I think, that the interstates also post speed minimums ~20 mph slower than the max.

Scariest part of the whole equation is driving that combination requires nothing more than a standard driver's license - over-length, over-weight, over-width, under-quick & not nearly as much 'whoa-nellie' as a 'regular' car or truck.

I think I'd rather follow it than it following me!

Yesterday in Seattle a 73 year old man drove an Isuzu Vehicross down a barricaded street and dumped it into a construction trench. While that's bad enough, doing it in a Vehicross is like wrecking an Edsel or a Delorean or something...you just don't see it often.

That Vehicross is an odd duck -- there's one that's frequently parked on a street I use to walk to the train. I can't imagine a 73-year-old buying one!

I just finished a round-trip drive from New York to Chicago, and I'm happy to report only two acts of truly inconsiderate driving (if you overlook the fact that seemingly all Chicago drivers have cell phones Krazy-Glued to their faces).

#1: a brand-new Infiniti (M series?) and a brand-new Kia Optima racing in Indiana at what must have been at least 120 mph.

I saw them approaching and got out of their way, but a couple cars a tenth of a mile or so ahead of me in the left lane weren't checking their rear views. The Infiniti managed to weave between them and fairly dense slow-moving right lane traffic, but the Kia wasn't as lucky. He practically locked up the brakes to stop behind the cars in the left lane (which were traveling at 80+, mind you) and at the same time I saw him throw up his hands in exasperation!

#2 was right as we finished up our trip -- a very old woman in a newish Toyota Corolla slowing to literally idle speed while in the right lane of the Major Deegan Expressway about a quarter mile before her exit. Traffic was very heavy but flowing at 45-50, and I couldn't get around her. Talk about a harrowing couple of minutes.

We took down her license plate and called our local precinct, and they told us they couldn't do anything about it. I hope she wasn't having a stroke or something and I hope someone she knows takes the keys away today.

I agree that is probably where the law was aimed. It is funny, really, how other drivers' attitudes toward you shift when they perceive a "weakness" of some kind that puts you on an uneven playing field (in their mind). Yesterday I was driving my '69 Chevy C20 to pick up a load of lumber. I loaded up with some items for the transfer site and some other items for the Salvation Army and headed into town. On the way in, no problems. I dropped off the trash, dropped of the donations, and went to the lumber yard. All drivers around me were behaving as they do. I had a bundle of 2x6x10 loaded on the truck (that's 136 sticks!), strapped it down, and headed home. All the way home other drivers were going out of their way to pass me! I was driving ~55-60 on 55 roads, and I would get these morons rushing ahead of me only to slow back down to speeds that inhibited me! I had this one driver pass me on a hill, pull back in front, and then slow down to <55. I changed lanes to pass and he tried to keep ahead of me! Haha, I blew him off on the hill, but wouldn't you know that he was sure to get back in front on the way down the other side! Thankfully he got the point that if he wanted to stay in front then he needed to maintain a speed faster than mine. I was just going my normal speed, but apparently these folks must have felt like an old truck with a heavy load MUST be going slow!

I tell you what, though, that truck rides like silk with a decent load on. Sure beats the whipping one takes while running it empty with 60 psi in the rear tires! :sick: My son (almost 2) loves it though. He did not want to get out when we arrived at home! Every time we went outside yesterday he would say, "Dada, please let <his name> sit in the truck!"

Maybe we need stricter and more frequent driving tests along with some type of medical evals for older drivers.
And, when does "older" begin.

In our area of state, seems that at least every week there is some type of spectacular crash with deaths involving drunken drivers or very young drivers. One noteworthy crash was a 16 year old driving his father's 04 Acura TL with a 17 year old friend. Both were killed when boy crashed car sideways into tree and split car in half.

Then, we have the issue of illegal immigrants driving without licenses or insurance getting into accidents causing deaths and injuries. These folks totally oblivious to being law abiding and considerate of others on the road.

Thats simple, anyone older than me should be tested often and have a restricted license.

There was a case here not to long ago where a teen died in her car given to her by her parents the first time driving it. I will see if I can find a report on it.

Dunno about that last bit. When I drive through local areas with a high proportion of immigrants (and having lived there, I know many are illegal) I find drivers that are slower and more careful. Too slow; no one told them the unwritten rules, like go 5-10 over, or let faster traffic through even if it's speeding.

you get plenty of them in Philadelphia too (not just aliens either), since so many poorer people can't afford insurance, they drive without it.

sometimes, they actually drive better, since they are more afraid of being stopped, and losing their car, etc.

Our numbering system is based on 10 (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0)

Hexadecimal is based on 16 so you add 6 numbers (in this case letters) to that so you also have A,B,C,D,E and F) where 'F' would equal 15 and 10 would equal 16.

Octal is based on 8 so you wont have the numbers 8 and 9 where 10 would equal 8 and 11 would equal 9

Sadly, it is almost a must to have uninsured motorists' option on ones insurance, with a waiver of premium.

A reported accident should not increase your premiums if it is not an "At Fault" crash even though your company pays.

As insurance follows the car, it is not recommended to loan it for when you do loan your car you are loaning your insurance.

Carry high limits of Liability and high deductibles on Comp and Collision. Underinsured Motorist is very needed including UMPD which covers your property.

Only problem with uninsured/underinsured coverage is that if your car is damaged by a hit-and-run (as my '04 Camry was when parked overnight on the street by my son in LA), your insurance covers it under collision. Unfortunately, my son's collision deductible was $1,000 (to keep the total premium somewhat reasonable in SoCal), and the damage was over $4,000.

But the car was drivable cross-country from there to VA, where I could at least have a body shop of known quality fix it. We had to tape together the shattered left taillight, and watch as the badly gouged quarter panel slowly rusted, but there were no issues with the wheels, suspension, or even doors or trunk latching.

In WA, UMPD states that when a parked car is crashed by a hit and run, the deductible under the UMPD is $300. When the insured vehicle is crashed and the adverse driver is known, the deductible is $100. Different states = different terms and conditions.

Ho doggies! No way. If that driver was on a cell phone the car would have T-boned that white sedan instead of just clipping it. That was a VIP there! Haha... the name was "real life frogger" so I was watching the pedestrians the first time through and did not even see the infraction! I thought, Why did those peds just stop? On replay, I saw it.

May I ask which airport this is at? Every airport I have been to since 9-11 had police moving traffic. If you weren't loading or unloading they were there within 30 seconds telling you to move.

A lady in a Pontiac Sunfire going 45 MPH in a 70 ZONE of I-59 near Birmingham, AL

She was in the left lane, and there are only two at this point of the interstate.

She was going the same speed as the Explorer BESIDE HER in the right lane.

She had one (of four total Brakelight sections) brakelight

I flashed my brights (didn't leave them on, only two quick flashes, like a blinker would flash) to pass, and while she did move over shortly, she proceeded to speed up to my 65 MPH (it was nighttime and had rained a few hours before, so things were damp) and followed me with her high beams to my exit (about 3 miles).

Some people just amaze me sometimes.

Pulled up behind a Corvette at a stoplight this morning. with no one in front of them. Well the light turns green and this Vette takes off reaching the break neck speed of about 35MPH (in a 40 MPH zone) in just under 1/2 minute. Finally got around the Vette and noticed a little old blue haired lady behind the wheel. :confuse:

Nothing wrong with following the law but I would expect a Vette to be able to get to 35 MPH faster than 30 seconds. Plus don't you think that accelerating that slowly is being inconsiderate?

Another example of kinda inconsiderate situation are those who are expected to move briskly but just kind of poke along. Example of this situation is traffic light on 4 lane road (2 each way) and light is red. I am in leading pack of vehicles coming to light and can choose which lane I want to stop in. Many times I encounter vehicle similar to mommy minivan in one lane and BMW 3, Corvette, Mustang or similar in the other lane. Naturally, I decline going into lane behind the minivan. It seems more often than not, the minivan moves away smartly and the other sporty car dawdles along with me right behind it and a stream of tightly packed cars following the minivan are passing me. To add insult to injury, cars following me are able to slip into the faster stream and pass me. Further insult is seeing that stream plus the slowpoke in front of me make the next light and I get stopped for a long red.

At Dulles (outside Washington DC), the terminal (and adjacent pickup area) is very long, so there aren't enough cops to watch the entire stretch (at least the last time I was there). One told me to move on (I wasn't blocking anyone, and my wife's plane was already on the ground), so I just moved to the very end of the pickup area (and kept watching my rear view mirror).

I see Corvette drivers many times on interstates and they are usually very considerate, in the right lane at about the speed limit or slightly over, keep good space between them and vehicle in front and are middle age or older. Can't recall last time I seen a Corvette driver being inconsiderate or doing something stupid.

Most Vettes are driven carefully to avoid us dangerous drivers. Rarely I'll see on on the interstate opening it up to blow it out.

A lady in the neighborhood has one. She must be in her 60s and appears to be alone. She would go up the road at 15 mph or 20.

When picking up "Arrivals" I prearrange them to call me on their cellphone when they are ready. I'm usually parked at one of the nearby airport motels. With immediate family, we use the 6 mile walkie talkies we take skiing.

The uncooperative female could use a sticker on her rear window, "I'M INCONSIDERATE" :P .

San Jose airport has a little parking lot just off the road that leads to the terminals (when you're already pretty close), specifically for cell phone use. It has a signal tower and wifi - great idea.
