I've noticed the vibration others have at 75mph and above. I've been gathering the various proposed fixes--tires, rims, air pressure etc. and will be taking it in soon for them to take a look. The van otherwise is fine, no clunking no tranny problems....only got 4k on it though. This is giving me a chance to see how well my dealer treats me long before the warranty is up.

Sounds like idling semi truck.
Does anyone have any info. Also, will it harm AC or anthing off the belt?

Another interesting thing that happened yesterday was a shuddering vibration on braking. Happened 3-5 times in a parking lot, parkede it, did not notice it after we left.

I tested it on this trip. I reset the trip odometer at each fillup. The first time the fuel light came on at about 340 miles. I stopped at the next exit and filled up right away and the van took 14.6 gallons (23.2 MPG), indicating a 5.5 gallon reserve when the light came on. The next tank, the fuel light came on at 325 miles. Since we were still 40 miles from Indiana and gas in Indiana is about 15 - 20 cents per gallon cheaper than Illinois, we decided to to go as far as we felt comfortable. We hit Crawfordsville at 389 miles and the van filled up with 17.4 gallons (22.4 MPG), leaving 2.6 gallons still in the tank.
I hope this information helps you out.
It seems that Honda is playing it real conservative with this issue. I read a while back on this list that the gas tank on the Odyssey is rather long and wide, but shallow, making the float gauge less sensitive (Can anyone on this list confirm or refute that information?). If that's the case, then it makes sense to calibrate it to tell you too soon rather than risk telling you too late that you're low on fuel.
The point is, very long, relatively wide and quite shallow tank means the level does not change much, which makes fuel remaining difficult to gauge accurately. There seems to be a fairly wide variation in how much fuel remains when the light comes on from one Odyssey to the next, but each individual vehicle seems to be very consistent. (In fact, ours is more consistent than I would have thought possible, there is never more than 1/2 gallon variance in when it comes on, with between 4 and 4.5 gallons remaining.) I simply assume that I will be able to travel not more than 80 miles after the light comes on. The "early" warning, especially if your van has 6 or 7 gallons remaining, is understandably frustrating, but since it is very consistent, you should at least have a good idea of how much fuel remains and be able to plan accordingly.
Secondly, has anyone had experience with cracks appearing in the rear "spoiler" near the window washing nozzle? We have been told by the dealer that this part is on "national back order" and they have no idea when one will be sent.
I appreciate any feedback on these issues.
Ok...Its been 8000 miles since I bought my ODY last September. No major problems, but I did find the gas gauge annoying and they just replaced the fuel sending unit, we will see if that does the trick. I also have the AC clunk on cold startups, sometimes it is so loud that it is almost like the AC unit is falling out of the engine. 2 trips from Maryland to Illinois (one in frigid January temps, one 2 weeks ago) and my gas mileage went from 20 or 21 to 23-24 mpg by the second trip.
My speakers in the front doors have to be replaced because they are both blown (since purchase) and I have some dings around the back bumper.
Id have to say that I think the van is great, plenty of room for kids and vacation stuff, and although the drivers seat could be a bit more comfortable, it is definately a great vehicle.

I'm just glad to have the vehicle back. This was a mere annoyance and not a real problem. Love the vehicle and look forward to many years with it.
Thanks.
Other than that issue, and a rattle in the driver's window when it is rolled slightly down, I have no other problems on our 2001 LX after over 6 months and almost 7000 miles.
We've had our GG '01 EX for just over five weeks and 2000 miles. Absolutely no problems so far, but I purchased a 6 yr./100K/zero deduct. extended warranty for $895 as I have noted the problems discussed on this thread. No car company is PERFECT: besides, an out-of-warranty AC repair could be $2K+. We'll probably keep this mini-van 6-8 years.
I hope that we get the same reliability as our 1993 Nissan Quest GXE (8+ years, 164K miles). Other than regular maintenance items, the only major repairs were the AC blower motor and evaporator, the spare tire cable which snapped the only time we had a flat (rusted out), and the cracked right rear tail-light assembly (part of minor accident).
Our van is still (at 37,000 miles) using about one quart in 5,000 miles of coolant--personally I'd happily trade for zero coolant consumption an one quart in 3,500 miles oil consumption.
The coolant consumption has been more or less steady since new, The dealer's second attempt to fix or diagnose it occurred at the first oil change, and it has appeared on every service invoice since then. I still haven't read or heard about any other Odyssey having this symptom, and the dealer and Honda Tech line seem to be stumped. I just makes me a little nervous, but I believe Honda will make it right if a major failure results. I have two vehicles right now with over 150,000 miles, and intend to keep the Odyssey to at least 200,000, but I sure wish they could get this figured out (and fixed!).
When it goes in for the 37,500 service I'm going to suggest a new radiator cap, I don't think they've tried replacing it yet, and it could be as simple as that.
I changed at 1K, 5K and every 5K after that. Always with a new filter. No - as in zero - oil consumption between changes.

I brought it in Tuesday morning, I asked the service manager to ride with me to show him so we'd both agree there was a problem, we did and he agreed quickly there was. By noon they said it was fixed. They said they had to balance the wheels more than once and re calibrate their spin balancing machine but they think they fixed it. I picked it up and drove home. The next morning, Wednesday, on the way to work-- 75mph and same vibration. Since I pass this dealer on the way to work I dropped in, saw Pat the service manager and said, not fixed.
He was a little surprised and I was willing to make another appointment if he couldn't take care of it that day. He said he could. This time he put the rims and tires they had on their EX courtesy Ody van on mine to see if there was an improvement. There was. So he knew it could be rims or tires or possibly both. He put my rims/tires back on, had it taken to the Firestone dealer and had him test the tires, and decided to replace my tires. The Firestone guy only had 2 of the right size and when they were put on there did seem to be an improvement. However Pat didn't stop there. He knew that if he only changed the two, then when it came time to rotate the tires I might have the same problem with the 2 not replaced so he told the Firestone guy to replace all 4. The firestone guy didn't have 2 more so Pat gave me a loaner for the night because the Firestone guy wouldn't get them till THursday.
I had mentioned to Pat that I was a regular reader of the Edmunds Odyssey forums and that some LX owner had had problems with the rims/tires being out of round or unbalanced etc.
In my head I was thinking--if the balancing works, fine. If a couple of new tires fixes it, fine. If I can get Michelin Symmetry's and that fixes it, fine. I knew that for some the only fix was the alloy rims and Michelin tires. I was ready if it came to that to nicely try and negotiate that option either with Kendall Honda or Honda America.
Thursday- Pat called and said he expected the van from Firestone by 230p, he'd test it and call me. 330 no call. I left a message for Pat about 340pm. He called me back 10 minutes later. The van was back, 4 new Affinity's, definitely an improvement, but not good enough in Pat's view. He said that he told himself, "I'm going to put the EX alloy wheels/tires back on to see how much difference"-and it was a lot in his opinion, so he was giving me the alloy rims and Michelin Symmetry tires!! I didn't even have to ask.
The courtesy van is a 2001 with just over 4k on it also-so I don't lose anything tire tread wise there. He said the difference between the ride with the steel rims/Firestones and the alloy rims/Michelins was significant.
AFter driving the van home-didn't take the freeway due to an accident- I agree with the smoothness-less road noise-and the steering feels tighter- at the very least I think I would recommend the Michellins (as I've read) to other owners, having had the chance to drive the Firestones and now the Michelins.
Pat said the reason he was doing it was he wanted to keep me happy and he had another set of rims he could put on the courtesy van. Works for me.
He's going to check out my steel rims and see what's wrong with them.
He also said the tread pattern was different between the Affinity's and the Michelins--I thought that was intersting. I asked why they would put Affinitys on the LX and not Michelins on both LX and EX-- he said (candidly I thought) it might be a marketing ploy- drive the LX then the EX notice the difference in ride and think there is at least one reason to bump up to the EX for the extra $$$--- makes sense--and disappoints me at the same time.
As you can imagine I was one happy owner. I told him when I get the survey it will be all excellents.
I told him he did everything the way I had hoped
I asked if he'd had this problem with other Odysseys...he said no this was the first....if this was the truth, I wonder if he would have given me the alloy rims had I been the 8 or 12 or 30th Ody owner with this problem.
Tomorrow I'll try it at 75, but I don't think there'll be a problem.
Sorry it's so long
Anyway, you have called your dealership and mentioned about the national back order of this rear spoiler, My question is, are they gonna replace it for free or you have to pay for everything, if so, how much they are asking for?
I'm just wondering, how many owners out there with the same problem, Maybe I was driving to fast and the rear spoiler cannot handle the wind?I don't know! It seems to me that this parts is defective, my opinion is Honda should replace it for free.
I will appreciate for any reply before I call up my dealership or if you have any information such as phone number. THANKS !!!!!
My father in law has a 99 EX and the rear spoiler on his is not cracked at all.
Msg #796, #797, and #798 seem to indicate that the problem is related to the STRUT. Does anyone else have the same problem?
Post #497 edm85 by auburn63 helped us completely with our problem and we will be forever indebted. Thanks so much. He said "if the crossbars are installed in the wrong direction with the trailing edge forward instead of towards the rear, then they will make a loud noise. If you look at them they are alot like a wind on a plane and need to be installed with the more rounded side forward. Take a close look at them and see if you see what I am talking about".
Well #497 we went out and looked very closely at our crossbars and sure enough one was one way and the other was the opposite way, thus creating the noise. We went the next day to our Honda dealer and told them about it and asked them to turn the one around. (the service man said he heard about
Edmunds, but that is just all opinions)(I thought "yes", but these were all people that drive ODs, maybe there is something to it) As soon as we drove home the noise was gone. We went on vacation the next week (1500 miles) and gave it the real test. No wind noise at all. I contacted our Honda Dealer and they have since informed their servicemen about the correct way to put these cross bars on. I can't believe Honda didn't train their technicians about this and it took John Q. Public" (with an OD) to solve our problem. THREE CHEERS FOR POST #497
Also we have the navigator and it was just great.
Took out road map only about 2X because we couldn't believe it was so exact. Took us in and out of areas we would have had to study the map to get to. Well worth the money. Now I just set back and listen to "Ether" (we named her that, because "we asked her (Ether) the directions and she was away there to help us"
On my EX of 6 months, the driver's side sometimes (once a week) does not seat itself closed and the dash light shows this. I then have to use the remote to open again and then close it; it always closes the second time.
Occasionally, after this operation, I'll drive away and the door open indicator will start buzzing but the dash indicator will be off. After I shut the vehicle down for a few minutes, the buzzing disappears. The problem completely corrects itself until the next time.
It seems to be computer or sensor related but I do not see anything on the posts similar to this. It's only the left door.
