The most recent AAA survey of gas prices indicated that Wisconsin has the highest statewide average gasoline price in the nation at just over $1.81 a gallon (regular). In Madison, premium is selling for $2.50 a gallon! Up, up and away.........

Our local prices (Kansas City) jumped 20 cents on the Friday before the big "powerball" jackpot - to $1.79 for regular unleaded. Dropped to $1.75 after that and stayed that way over labor day weekend. Today it's down to $1.69. I kind of wished I would have won the powerball. When the interviewer asked what I planned to do with the winnings, I was ready to say "Fill up both my cars".

Reports are spreading all over KC that gas will be $5.00 tomorrow. I haven't found ANYONE who's actually seen a price that high, but I have heard from several who's "sister just called and her friend said that gas was already over $4.00 in St. Louis." At any rate, the scene up here is a lot like the gas lines in the 70's...cars backed up for blocks, waiting to get gas. Anybody here actually SEEN any $4-$5 gas?

One sure way to drive up gas prices is the way I've seen people going out and "topping off"...

I was in contact last night with a friend in Wisconsin who told me that she saw a station raise prices to $2.95 late yesterday afternoon.

That sounds vaguely illegal to me...

    We are in this together!

in Kansas City. The district attorney in my (Kansas) county has said that any stations raising prices (some actually did hike it to $5.69 per gallon) would be prosecuted on fraud charges.

I live in Madison and can confirm that several gas stations engaged in some unscrupulous price gouging. Absolutely despicable, but pretty minor in the vast scheme of things. As bad as it is, whining about gas prices right now is an awfully selfish act. There were several stations in the area that jacked prices up over $3.00 per gallon. Unfortunately many people over-reacted and rushed out to "top off" the tank which has resulted in a regional gas shortage (hopefully short term).

Most stations have lowered their prices to "pre-crisis" levels this morning. Apparently our Attorney General placed some influential calls......

In Topeka KS, an Amoco owner raised the prices to:

    Regular - 4.009
    MidGrade- 5.009
    Premium - 6.009

The Kansas City Star had a photo of a station that raised its prices to $5.69. People have said it was independent stations that did the price gouging, but this was a Conoco station in Lawrence Kansas. There are reports that other gas stations had prices just as high.

I don't know if this was at the Conoco station that ended up raising prices so high, but my roommate's son was with some other people getting gas at a station in Lawrence. They filled up for $1.99 a gallon and after they paid, they noticed the price going up to $2.49 a gallon.

Personally, I paid $1.55 a gallon for 87 octane unleaded which was what the price was before the bombing. This was at QuikTrip.

As another poster indicated, investigations are being launched and the guilty stations will be fined.

A local radio talk show host suggests never buying anything ever again from any station you know gouged the price. A sentiment I agree with.
  • pjyoungpjyoung Member Posts: 885
majorthomecho - saw the local news tonight where Johnson County district attorney said that if you bought that $4 to $6 gas, give his office a call. They had a gal on the news who had a handwritten reciept for $179. Then they showed the manager of one of those stations who gouged saying that "As soon as we heard that Conoco and Amoco were guaranteeing that the price would be the same in the morning, we immediately reduced our prices and implemented our program of offering refunds back to $1.79 (still over market price)". Of course, he failed to say anything about their efforts to notify the "gougee's" of this altruistic program.

Tell it to the judge, son.

...on Tuesday night and some woman reported the local gas stations were raising prices as much as $3.00 to $5.00 a gallon in Michigan and cars waiting in line for an hou to fill up. I live in Philadelphia and filled my tank believing the rumor, but the local Amoco station was pretty much deserted. So far, the price has only risen 3 cents from $1.54 to $1.57 for Amoco Ultimate.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
the Attorney General of the State of Illinois has already filed suit against one station for price gouging, I believe they were in Peoria or somewhere in central Illinois. Here in Chicago I've seen no price gouging, though I hear it's happened in one of the suburbs (Naperville, a west suburb with about 80k people and many large businesses, to be specific). BTW, the price at the one station that was filed suit against was $5.00 per gallon. Sickening.

Hey KC, I think it was only a few stations in KC that did it.

Conoco has come out and said, (paraphrasing here), "Don't blame us. It was the independents that carry our name." Like someone else said, "Tell it to the judge."

QuikTrip continues to hold the line on prices and actually it has fallen a couple of pennies.

I found out that Sam's Club does have a place to buy gas here in KC. Their price was $1.48 for 87 octane. My roommate got all excited, but I pointed out that making a special trip to save $ .05 a gallon would probably not be worth it.
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
We didn't get any real spike in prices here, although they did go up to around $1.44 for 87 for a day or two, then settled back to $1.39. Yesterday most of the stations around here dropped to $1.37

Gas at the QuikTrip down the street is down to $1.45 a gallon for 87 Octane. A local casino sent me a coupon for $5 so I went and redeemed it. I played a little and walked off with $10 which I used for gas at the above mentioned QT.

...for 87 octane, in Millersville, MD (between Baltimore and Annapolis). Found it the other day and filled the Intrepid up. Unfortunately, I loaned my Gran Fury to a friend and he found the same station. Unfortunate I say, because that car needs high octane and often pukes out anything less!

after last week's little price raising fiasco here in West Georgia.

Mr. P is dealing regular at $1.23. The other guys have come down significantly also...

Mr. Patel (independent gas retailer) raised his price on regular to $1.44 on Sept 20th.
On Sept. 25th he lowered it down to $1.23.

Mr. Bubba, a good ol boy retailer just down the street, lowered his regular to $1.08 on Sep 26th.

Mr. Patel responded on the 27th and lowered his price to $1.05.

Bubba and Mr. Patel took away so Much business from "Mr. Patel's Cousin"...that cousin lowered his price to $1.00 per gallon on the 28th.

Now, Sep 29th, "Mr. Bubba Number Two" jumps into the fray. He operates a citgo a block in the other direction of Mr. Patel and has lowered his price to a miniscule $.99 per gallon!!!

Here's the weirder part. Mr Exxon, who is on the other side of town west of Cousin Patel (1.00/gl) sells his gas for $1.35!

And, Mr. Amoco, who is on the other side of town east of Bubba 2(.99/gl) is also $1.35!

If you are not confused, then bring your tanker over to Whitesburg, Ga. and load up!

Perhaps by the time you get here it'll be down to $.97.....Aahahahaha...

when leaving Chicago on 9/29, gas was still about 1.759 or more for regular (87), I'm serious. I don't ever wanna hear anyone grouch about their gas prices, we're always the worst as far as I can tell.

I'm in Indy for the next few days, it's not too great pricewise here either, but I was happy to pay 1.629 for premium when I crossed the state line!
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
Prices have kind of settled here in central PA... still sitting at $1.25 for 87 octane. Saw $1.41 for premium yesterday.

I lived in St. Louis (Kirkwood) for two summers in the 80s (college w/mom). I liked it down there but HOW do you survive the summers? That place makes hell seem like Alaska. Heat aside, I do wish our rents were like yours, my old roommate now goes to Wash U, pays like $600 for a 2BR/2BA apartment. That will get you a studio apt in Chicago, maybe.

    Sorry for going off subject.

I work in IT, every computer room is climate controlled.

My mortgate for a three bedroom brick ranch, 1600 square feet, plus 1400 square foot basement, attached garage and about a 1/3 acre yard is $750/month including all escrows. Why rent!
I'm not any further from my office than the guys who live in St. Charles county and I pay about half what they pay for a home. A few months difference in mortgage payments makes the private school tuition for the kid.

Sure I drive a few more miles, but then that's what the $1K beater is for, but I pay less to live and avoid the personal property tax in MO.

Some topic related content: Gas is usually cheaper in Missouri due to lower taxes on fuel, but recently I've been buying for the same price or less in Illinois.

I've been commuting on a weekly basis between north side of Chicago and Noblesville, IN (burb of Indy). Gas is exactly 50 cents higher in Chicago right now, to wit:

    Amoco, Chicago: 1.799/1.899/1.999

    BP, Noblesville: 1.299/1.399/1.499

I actually paid 1.419 for premium at a Shell on the way down here.

ghulet, Sunoco sells "Ultra 94" octane more as a "one-up" to all the 93s out there. It's also probably the only fuel a lot of old muscle cars can run on (those that used leaded premium back in the day) without causing excessive knocking.

    Here's Sunoco's blurb on it: http://www.sunocoinc.com/market/gasoline.htm

...at a WaWa in Millersville, MD. I'd have to check my records, but I think this is the least I've ever paid for gasoline since I've had my Intrepid. I think their premium (which I have to keep an eye on, because of my Gran Fury and '67 Catalina) is about $1.359 a gallon.

Maybe it's time to trade in that little 2.7 on a nice big Ram...
