Its an improvement over pervious models but like you... not enough for me to go running to the dealership. The "little" things that they have done in the 09's should and could have been done years ago. The VCM for all drives, the speed sensitive volume, ipod/mp3 connectivity, but most of all... electrical pins for towing. I hope that they are 7 pin connectors. As for styling is reminds me of love child between a jeep and a nissan. I am hoping that they maintain the UTILITY portion intact and not go overboard with the CUV craze. Leave that to the CRV, MDX and RDX. My 07 does me well and has handled lots of rough roads and none too gentle usage. Exactly what I needed. Now an image that is truly funny... a Ridgeline with an aftermarket Peer Canopy.. whats the point there!!!
Sorry to tell you but I'm not from Sussman Honda. I'm just trying to help people out to get a great deal that I got there. Go talk to Mark Rio and Jim Jackson there. Those were the only people that I talked to and got the deal. I wouldn't take assumptions like that becasue you couldn't get the same deal I did. Ask anyone on the board, just because one person couldn't get a deal at one place doesn't mean another can't get a better deal. All I'm trying to say is I did get a great deal and had a great experience there. I could come back to you and say you must work for Sloane Honda. All I wanted to do was let people know what kind of deal they can get. Thanks for your two cents.
Each deal can be different at the same dealership, a lot depends on the day of the month you get your new vehicle or how slow a sales day it is, which model or color you want, etc. That said, there is no reason for any dealership to not honor prices they have given a customer or to be rude to them. If I was treated in such a manner I would gladly take my business elsewhere even if I had to pay a bit more.
Glad you got a good deal, but it sounds like your deal was the exception and others may want to not waste their time with them.
Hi Jon311, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I do not know about others experiences at Sussman Honda. Initially in my first post about Sussman Honda I did not want to name anyone.... but now that you have thrown couple of names on the table let me openup a little bit.
Read my first post about 2 weeks ago on my experience on Marty Sussman Honda. The eractic sales person was Mark Rio and the rude Sales anager was Howard Leopold. I think there is fundamental problem when someone is rude and thrashing their own internet sales department. Never seen such hard bashing to a customer before at a car dealership. All this was about the Open Road Honda email quote I had and their internet sales department said they would beat that by $300. Since he could not beat (he could not even match) he just got wild along with his Sales Person.
Sorry about the experience you had over there. I delt with Jim Jackson who was the GM and after he ran the numbers he appointed me to Mark Rio to finalize the paperwork. I really didn't deal with Mark on making the actual deal so I couldn't tell you if he was a jerk when he was dealing with you but he seemed ok to me but I guess that could be because he didn't have to do any work and basically the GM told him to give it to me for this price. I do recomment Jim Jackson though. He was right to the point and no bull involved. I personally like to go directly to the GM becasue at the end of the day they control everything at the dealership. I guess everyone has different experiences everywhere. Well I hope you enjoy your car. This is a great car.
Bought a brand new 2008 Pilot EX from Sierra Honda in Monrovia, CA in late Feb 2008. A day later, replaced a defect door trim, and about 30 days later spotted many rusty parts underside the car. Some of them appear to be very rusty and must have started before I bought the car. Contacted both dealer and Honda regional manager. They claimed that surface rusts are normal, not covered by the warranty and declined to fix it. It is not difficult for any honest person to see that rust on a 30 days-old car is not normal, and is a factory defect.
Before you decide to buy a Honda, it might be a very good idea to check out the underside paint carefully. Don't expect after-sale service, which is non-existent in our case. We never expect this poor paint quality. We also have a 1999 Camry. Even today, it shows no underside rust at all. If I am not the only one who is just bad luck, Honda paint quality is really in question.
Just update for all in the market looking for vp, I almost bought my vp 2wd this afternoon in So Cal, the dealer gave me 21800 plus tax, fees. They only had one white with wheel lock and mug guard and they want me to pay extra. I do not think I need them and just walked out.
Is 27,750 + Title + Taxes without any financing a good price for 2008 Pilot EX-L in Dayton, OH? I see some people paid lower in other states. Does the pricing vary too much by state?
We felt intimidated by what we perceived as the high pressure sales style of our local Honda dealer, so we looked online through CarsDirect.com, which as far as I can tell can't be beat on price. But I still prefer a more involved approach to car buying, so I filled out the form on Costco.com. They say a dealer will call you within 24 hours, but also give you the contact info of the dealer if you want to call first. We called and asked if we could come over right away, and it turned out to be the same local dealer, Sam Linder Honda in Salinas, CA.
This was a great decision. You have to buy through Costco. It's worth the $50 membership on its own. Costco's negotiated price was $500 over invoice for a Pilot (varies by car). Plus we got the $3,500 dealer incentive, giving us $3,000 below invoice. That was far less than Edmunds True Market Value pricing, and just a couple hundred more than CarsDirect.com's quoted price.
In return, we got great customer service, got to see and test drive the cars, almost no pressure (see more below), no haggling, no obligation to buy, and of course Costco standing behind us should we have problems.
The salesperson was helpful and spent a lot of time with us, but didn't pressure us. There was no haggling over the car price. We asked for quotes on some add-ons like cross bars and a tow package, which he gave us for well below MSRP.
The only small amount of pressure was him encouraging us to apply for a loan through Honda rather than 3rd party financing (which was a good decision due to a lower rate) and of course the sales pitch in the finance room for all the extras, which wasn't too bad, and which we actually bought a few things. We were able to talk him down on Gap insurance and a car alarm.
It still took a few hours to compare models, test drive, finance and buy, but compared to our last car buying experience, this was night and day. Imagine going to a car lot and saying "how much is that car?" and getting a straight answer. This is the only way to go.
If you don't mind paying more for your convenience, then that is a decent way to buy a car. A lot of folks here are finding Honda dealers that will price down into the hold back to move a Pilot. That would be a saving of maybe $800-1,000 compared to what you paid. Nothing wrong with wanting an easy deal, but you are paying what I think is "too much" just becuase you want it easy.
We got our Pilot priced into hold back and probably spent less time at the dealership than you did and our deal was real easy too. We DID spend some qualify time on the road to go get it, since the local dealer would not touch the price.
Note that the Costco price will vary from city to city and state to state - a local Honda dealer may price your deal less or more than this deal.
Just update for all in the market looking for vp, I almost bought my vp 2wd this afternoon in So Cal, the dealer gave me 21800 plus tax, fees. They only had one white with wheel lock and mug guard and they want me to pay extra. I do not think I need them and just walked out
Invoice is $25,630 less the $2,500 dealer incentive is $23,130. Even if they priced it without destination that is a really cheap deal.
Have you heard the expression: Don't cut off your nose to spite your face ? If they price the car to you really low into the hold back and you walk off over a couple of hundred for the spash and locks - that may be a case where that expression applies .
We have agreed on the price without those things and they do not have my color in stock. How would you feel if you have to drive 30 mintues each way? I just do not want to pay extra for something I do not need. And I still promised them if they have the right car without spash and locks, I will go to them again to buy it. Today another dealer offered me 21700 and I bought from them. I just want to share my experience here to other people who are also looking for pilots. Nothing wrong with people saving money, right?
I assume FWD since you are in TX? Invoice is $29,651 less $3,500 incentive is $26,151 or $346 less than your price. I would say you should be able to do better based on what others are able to get. Seems like the 3 that are close could compete to sell you the Pilot and the end of the month is 8 days away. So I would hit all of them again the last couple of days of the month and see if they will drop the price to move just one more Pilot. They get all of hold back ($650 or so for this model) and the $346, so there is a good deal they could drop the price and still be OK.
That assumes your price includes the dealer's doc or prep fee, if not then you are pretty far from a nice deal.
Keep in mind, not all dealers will deal cheap. My local dealers, for example, would never offer a price down into hold back or even every close to invoice. We saved a lot of money (but had to do some driving) to get our Pilot from an out of state dealer.
While waiting for the end of the month, I would widen your search arc and see if you can find a dealer farther from home willing to make you a nicer deal now. What could it hurt? If you get a price into the hold back, go get it. If not, then you can always hit the closer dealers and month's end. How far to Shreveport? I have been told Holmes Honda has nice prices, but never did any business with them.
Nice deal, in any case. I didn't say you could not get good deals now, just that the person asking could not get any from THEIR local dealers. Sounds like they need to drive down from north Texas to Houston for their Pilot....
Hi, I live in Central N.J. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is a good lease deal or not for Pilot EX-L (red, grey leather interior)...$34,080.00 MSRP - $420/mo - ZERO money down. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it! Thanks!!!
1) Look up invoice 2) Take off $3,500 or $2,500 incentive (the VP model you want is just $2,500)
If you can get a price for the Pilot, destination, and dealer fee at or below that number then you have a nice deal.
There is 2% hold back (some say 3%, but that is too high) so if you take that off of invoice less incentive that would be the dealer makes no money (in theory) price. Anything is possible, invoice less incentive is reasonable as is a dip into some of the hold back.
Gas hit $4 a gallon in CA today I see on the news and my wife is paying $50 + for every fill up in her Pilot (it is not $4 here, yet). The dealers and Honda should be willing to do anything to move the guzzlers off the lot .
I bought 2008 exl fwd black with saddle leather interior yesterday with total out of door price of 27500, I think this is the lowest price so far on this board, so now the bar is set lower and readers can try to negotiate lower than this. Btw, if you are around Austin area I highly recommend buying from Round rock Honda, I was totally blown away by thier quality of service not just by sales person but the entire team of business manage and after sales delivery person. That dealership is highly recommened. I actually went 3 weeks ago to test drive their and told them that I have quotes from few dealers in houston and dallas which are in range of 27200-27700 out of door, and if they match I will buy from them. He said they can do that but I told them I will buy 2-3 weeks later once I get my tax refund to use as down payment. Icalled them 2 days ago and asked them if they have my color in stock and woud they still honor the price they told me yes and I went yesterday , the guy had already prepared a buers order of 27500 out of door and I signed it, no push, no haggling nothing.
Out the door prices posted here are meaningless. If someone paid $27,500 OTD and lives in an 8% sales state state they got a MUCH better deal than someone who paid $27,500 OTD in a 3% tax state.
If you want to brag about your deal, then post what you paid for the Pilot including destination and dealer fee - or simply post the break down of your OTD price .
2005 lease is up this July and we're thinking of buying our Pilot with @42k miles on it. silver fabric seats, standard w/remote start...don't know where to begin about purchase price etc...comments welcome.tks
Ann, You should do a comparison between the buyout price on your current Pilot versus a new '08. With the '09's weeks away, people are getting some great deals on the '08's. But then again, if you're comfortable with your car's repair history, it may be the better way to go financially. Though I do not believe that Honda Finance will negotiate on your originally agreed buyout price. Personally, we just pickup a 2008, more than $6500 off with low handa financing. Could have saved another $1K if we had paid cash. Good luck, and let us know what you decide. PS you may also want to post in the Honda Leasing thread. Some good experts there on leasing details.....
Someone else just asked about this very thing. In the past Honda does not negotiate lease buyout prices. They could change the policy at any time, but that is how it has been. I think you will find that paying the buy out price is WAY more than the Pilot is worth on the open market - for sure with the current $4 gas and with Honda selling new ones for $2,500-$3,500 under invoice.
If you decide to do it, the process is simple - you fill out an ODO statement (available on the AHFC web page) and mail it in along with a check to buy the Pilot. Or you can take it to most any Honda dealer to handle the sale for you. AHFC gives the dealer a $500 discount on the price to handle the deal - so they SHOULD NOT charge you anything for doing this for you since they are making $500 for their trouble.
If you are in the market for Honda in St. Louis area, please be aware of Frank Leta Honda dealer. They will promiss that they will meet your price via the internet and phone to bring you in to the dealership. Once there, it's entirely a different story. I would avoid them at all cost. One very unhappy customer!
"I am getting a quote of $23700 for '08 Pilot VP 2WD model. Any idea if I can get a better deal?"
I got my VP 2WD in Austin last month for $21,500. The doc fee was only $50 and TT&L was $175 (not including 6.25% sales tax). The dealer incentive was $3500 then. McDavid Honda of Houston was the first to quote me $4000 under invoice. Both local dealers (Classic & Howdy) dropped to the same price after a week of negotiations.
I did not get any competitive quotes out of Dallas. In fact, John Eagle flat out lied to me then tried to switch cars when I was ready to buy.
Hi, I was looking to get the 2009 pilot, but after all the research I've done, it seems that getting the 2008 pilot is probably a better idea (price wise and probably in looks) I am quoted $28,727.00 for the 4wd EX-L with Navi( including destination) and 27,450.00 for the 2 WD with leather and navigation. Live in So. Cal. I am debating 2 wd vs 4 wd. I like the VCM, but this is my first SUV and I think it would be good to have an AWD which is what SUV's are about.
The price seems good nearly 4100 below invoice. another dealer near my home is willing to match.
I live in Orange County California. I to am interested in purchasing a 2008 EX-L 2WD Pilot. These seem like very good quotes. What dealerships are these from?
I have read a lot about the great prices the many are getting , but do the deals also include the 2.9% financing? I am looking for an EXL w/RES in Albuquerque and so far the dealers have not been very competitive with the pricing. I am willing to travel to TX, AZ or CO to find a deal. Thanks
I'd have to look at the original price quote from my dealer in MD, but I think you are about $50 less than his quote on the same vehicle, and I think I got a good deal. Like you, I was going to be in the market for an '09, and had a casual talk with my sales person to kill some time when the old Pilot was being serviced. I knew there was a $3,500 incentive, but was pretty surprised when the quote on the '08 was into the dealer hold back. When I became more serious about purchase (3 weeks ago), there were 10 EX-L Navis on his lot, now there are none, so that particular model is starting to get scarce, at least in our area. I feel as you do on the '09, am not crazy about the new boxy styling, plus I know pricing will be higher when the first models hit the lot, I'd be surprised to see any incentives on the new model as it is rolled out. I know there will be some new bells and whistles on the '09, but, in my brief experience, the '08 w/Navi is very well equipped, love the voice command thing, and XM radio. I think we all know going into the purchase that the gas mileage is not the greatest, but that is one reason the deals are out there. The '09 is supposed to offer marginally better gas mileage, but we'll see how that plays out when it is released.
Have been negotiating for a new base 2008 Honda Pilot VP for one week. Down to $22,890. Think the deal will fly when I get to the showroom, or will there be additional "hidden" charges added?
I would never go onto the dealer's lot until I had a firm price and knew they had the vehicle there that I wanted.
I hate those "match any dealer's price" or "beat any dealer's price by $___" since they almost never do what they say. If all they are going to do is match the price, just go to the dealer that gave you that price and get your Pilot.
In any case, always make them give you their price in writing (via e-mail or even better have them fax you the deal sheet - if they will do it) and not relay on some empty match or beat promise.
Thanks for all of the good info these last couple of months. We are looking at leasing an '08 Pilot, EX-L AWD, 15K miles per year, 36 months, no on NAV/RES.
What is the current MF and Residual for a lease and do you see any changes for May? Also, I've seen some messages where it says the marketing support ($2,500 or $3,500) can be used with the lease and some where it can't...what's the word on that?
If you live where there is a cheap lease, the rate is around 1% effective and should be posted around here someplace. If you live where there is no lease special then the rate is much higher and you may be better off buying or 3rd party leasing the Pilot. In the limited area where they have the lease special, I think you can combine the two based on the prices folks are paying and the net cap cost shown on the lease deal.
Just purchased a new 2008 AWD Pilot VP $23,995 price for VP 5 percent sales tax ($899.75) $250 doc fee $24 title *$6,000 for trade in (kbb trade value said $7,306. Payoff $8,147.25). OTD: $27316.
Ouch! Since you asked, you probably overpaid by $2,000-$2,500 and you got soaked on the doc fee but it's a solid car so enjoy. Other seem to be getting VP AWD's for $21.5 - $22.0k without too much trouble. Actually, you probably were within a few hundred dollars of a good price on an EX AWD.
I THINK they rolled the negative equity from the trade on top of the Pilot price, right? If so, the "soak" part was the $2k+ difference between trade allowance and pay off on the trade.
Thanks for the response. I really hope I didn't get it good, but probably did.
I got my trade in evaluated at 2 different dealerships. Both gave pretty much the same trade in value, which was $2137 less than what I owed (even though kbb said my car was worth $1136 more than what the dealerships wanted to give). Both dealerships said that they would have to wholesale my trade in.
I shopped online from 4 dealerships. The lowest offer after 2 weeks was $22385 - but that was without 2.9% percent.
I'm looking at a Pilot VP FWD. Lowest price I have been given via e-mail is $22496 and I know it doesn't include destination ($635). It is exactly $2500 below invoice. I'm in DFW and haven't thought of driving to Austin or Houston, anyone else get a deal there that was worth the drive??
From what I've read the dealer cash was $3500 even on VPs in March? I want to make sure I'm reading the incentives correctly.... looks like dealer stand alone cash of $2500 or $3500 runs out today. But, financing offer of .9% or 2.9% and $2500 dealer finance cash runs through June. I think I'll wait until next month to see if incentives get any better?? I think the only thing I would lose at this point is selection as the offers I am working with now run through June...right??
If you can get it for invoice less $2,500 with no added dealer fees then you might think about getting it. Hold back on a VP is what, $600 I think? If you want to drive round trip to Houston you may could save a few hundred of that - if you could find a dealer there willing to dip that far into the hold back. If you want / need it now, that is.
You might see what those dealers say for pricing just to see if it might be worth a trip, or to use to beat up on your current best offer dealership.
The question is, will they run out of Pilots like you want before you buy? If you are not picky on color then you might wait and see if things get better. $4 gas and the 09 Pilot should spell more motivated dealers and / or better incentives from Honda. Or everyone else could snap up the VPs and other cheap Pilots while you are waiting for a better deal .
So you think they will sell for Invoice- $2500 + TT& L? And eat the destination fee?
I'd love to know if anyone has gotten that deal in DFW... and which dealer. I would buy at that price today but I don't think they will do it??
Then the dealer installed options... the MSRPs are on Honda's website and the wheel locks are $55 not $299. I've heard the whole song and dance about installation.... maybe I will get a job installing wheel locks and cargo trays!! How do you sugeest getting out of that money trap, offer to pay MSRP?
I don't want to wait until the selection is nil, but right now new incentives are 24 hrs away.... thanks!!
When I say invoice I mean invoice including the destination charge. There is no markup on it and it should be included in both MSRP and invoice discussions.
I always use carsdirect.com to look up prices, since they make sure you don't combine options that can't ordered on the same car (not an issue on a Honda since there are no options), but it also shows me what some local (or any other ZIP code) dealer will sell me the car for - and invoice and MSRP. You can get invoice from here on Edmunds and KBB and other places, but you may have to add destination to the number they show.
If the local dealer will sell you the Pilot and make hold back only (price it at invoice including the destination fee and no doc fee) then that is a nice price. Even better if you can get into the hold back.
You also need to ask the dealers if there are any dealer installed options they expect you to pay for (when you get down to a specific Pilot). Often, the chump stuff like cargo trays, mud flaps, and wheel locks will be thrown in on an Internet price - at least that have been for me since I would not pay for them. If they have loaded it up with window tint, running boards, etc then you will be paying for those in some fashion. So finding a dealer that adds nothing could say you a bit of money.
If you actually WANT any of that stuff, check out the discount prices online and places like H and A and on ebay so you will no what it would cost you to buy these items. Then just make sure the dealer does not rip you off if you add them to your deal - once the price is settled for the Pilot. If they will not deal low, then buy them online and install for yourself.
I am in the Chicago area. I am trying to find out a good deal on a new 2008 4WD VP Pilot. I have got a number of email quotations ranging from 23,485 to 24,120 as the sale price (including the destination charge) + tax, doc, plates, and I am not convinced that this is the best that I can get.

Was last 4wd model for pilot.
24716 + taxes + 45 documentation + dmv = 27838
I consider it very good deal.
I've worked with 5 area dealers via email. Three are within $200 of each other.
$26,497 sales price, $28,399 OTD.
I was hoping for a little less. Should I take what I can now?
That assumes your price includes the dealer's doc or prep fee, if not then you are pretty far from a nice deal.

The drive out price with window tint, cross bars, protection package, wheel locks and splash guards is $ 27400. Here is the breakdown
Price : 25200
Sales Tax (6.25%) = 1575
Acessories: 625
Total: 27400
If i did not opt for the accessories drive out is 26775
I did very hard negotiating with all the dealers in Houston TX.
Nice deal, in any case. I didn't say you could not get good deals now, just that the person asking could not get any from THEIR local dealers. Sounds like they need to drive down from north Texas to Houston for their Pilot....

2) Take off $3,500 or $2,500 incentive (the VP model you want is just $2,500)
If you can get a price for the Pilot, destination, and dealer fee at or below that number then you have a nice deal.
The dealers and Honda should be willing to do anything to move the guzzlers off the lot

If you want to brag about your deal, then post what you paid for the Pilot including destination and dealer fee - or simply post the break down of your OTD price
Dennis
If you decide to do it, the process is simple - you fill out an ODO statement (available on the AHFC web page) and mail it in along with a check to buy the Pilot. Or you can take it to most any Honda dealer to handle the sale for you. AHFC gives the dealer a $500 discount on the price to handle the deal - so they SHOULD NOT charge you anything for doing this for you since they are making $500 for their trouble.

The price seems good nearly 4100 below invoice. another dealer near my home is willing to match.
What do you guys think
Thx

Thanks in advance.

$23,995 price for VP
5 percent sales tax ($899.75)
$250 doc fee
$24 title
*$6,000 for trade in (kbb trade value said $7,306. Payoff $8,147.25).
OTD: $27316.
Good deal, OK deal?
Dennis
I got my trade in evaluated at 2 different dealerships. Both gave pretty much the same trade in value, which was $2137 less than what I owed (even though kbb said my car was worth $1136 more than what the dealerships wanted to give). Both dealerships said that they would have to wholesale my trade in.
I shopped online from 4 dealerships. The lowest offer after 2 weeks was $22385 - but that was without 2.9% percent.
Arrrgggghhhh!
You might see what those dealers say for pricing just to see if it might be worth a trip, or to use to beat up on your current best offer dealership.
The question is, will they run out of Pilots like you want before you buy? If you are not picky on color then you might wait and see if things get better. $4 gas and the 09 Pilot should spell more motivated dealers and / or better incentives from Honda. Or everyone else could snap up the VPs and other cheap Pilots while you are waiting for a better deal
Dennis
I'd love to know if anyone has gotten that deal in DFW... and which dealer.
I would buy at that price today but I don't think they will do it??
Then the dealer installed options... the MSRPs are on Honda's website and the wheel locks are $55 not $299. I've heard the whole song and dance about installation.... maybe I will get a job installing wheel locks and cargo trays!! How do you sugeest getting out of that money trap, offer to pay MSRP?
I don't want to wait until the selection is nil, but right now new incentives are 24 hrs away.... thanks!!

Anyone got a better deal in Chicago or suburbs?
