    rmumford,
About gas mileage, my Z71, 5.3l, 3.73, G80 is getting 15mpg around town since I drove it off the lot. I'm on my 5th tank. As for the Autotrac, haven't got to try it much being in Texas. I have'nt had any trouble with the brakes. They work fine. Can you elaborate some about the the rear rotors? I haven't heard anything about this.
  • rmumfordrmumford Member Posts: 10
zonk1: All I know is that when I took it in to have the front brakes fixed, they said they had ordered rear rotors also. They said it was not a "recall", but if a vehicle came in for service, they would replace the rear rotors as per bulletin #86-50-22. I saved the paperwork.

Dave40. Not sure of the price on the truck, but all I've seen around here matched the Kelly BB prices. They only had that one on the lot. It sure was nice to finally drive one! They are expecting two 2500, ext. cab, short box, 4WD's in mid-Feb.

Regarding build dates and production: when did the delay until Feb. for 2500's get changed? Glad to hear you have a build date of yesterday. Mine was to be built on 12/21, but I did not really believe it - too many posts about delays and changed build dates. Would really like to hear about your truck (or anyone else with a 2500) when you get it.

Has anyone hooked up the pigtail that was included with the trailer package for a trailer electric brake controller?

My 1999 Chevy Silverado LS EXT. CAB is great
except for two very disappointing interior
qualities which when I took them into an
authorized GM dealer, they told me to go back
to your original selling dealer for service. They
said they will NOT service my vehicle unless it
is either mechanical or something is broke. You
can bet I'm contacting the Better Business
Bureau and filing a complaint against this
Chevrolet Dealership! Has anyone else out there
been told to go back to your authorized GM SELLING
dealer for service because they refuse to do
warranty work? I'd be interested to find out!
One problem that this dealer says 'every 99 truck
does' is when going to a complete stop and go
situation, the drivers side power bucket seat back
clunks and shifts back and forth enough to feel
the shift and more importantly, hear the clunk
very clearly! The other problem is with the plastic center console you get with a CD player
and bucket seats. Everyday under 40 degrees for
the first 10 minutes or so of driving, the
    center console rattles/buzzes uncontrollably until
the interior warms up. If you put your hand on the
console, the buzzing goes away. As soon as you
let off, the noise reappears EVERYDAY! The same
dealership claimed to have tightened four bolts.
When I left the dealership, the noise reappeared
and when I called them back up to take another
look at it, they refused to ever see me again.
They claim Chevrolet does not pay them for this
kind of warranty work and therefore, they refuse
to see me! I say since they know the rattles/noises
are there, fix it! Since they refuse, I'm going to try to nail them to the wall!!!!!
I'm interested if anyone else out there has these
two complaints and had similar NON-REFUSAL of
warranty work at an authorized GM dealer?

I wouldn't want to do business with any client that would not want me for a customer. Dealers are paid by the factory to perform warranty work. It doesn't come out of his own pocket. What the manufacturer allows may be what is keeping him from wanting to work with you, or perhaps hard feelings since you didn't buy it from him. But I say take your business elsewhere. You don't need to make a point, or be rude with him. Just move on to one you can be satisfied with for the long haul. I have read other complaints about power seat rattles, and decided to get the split bench instead. Previous G.M. products I've owned have seat rattles also. I'm reading so much about these 1st year model problems. When my backordered Silverado LS comes in, I'm going over it with a fine toothed comb, including a critical test drive. If it's not 100%, I'm not going to accept it.

I don't buy from a dealer unless I plan to have my non emergency service done there. To much hassle. Had this problem with a buick dealer many years ago. Once I had a wheel bearing go out on a Dodge (factory failed to lube it). The dealer I stopped at put me at the head of the line. But for non-emergency stuff I feel my salesman and his manager would intercede on my behalf if they want to continue my buisness. So far I've had excellent service at my chevy dealer through 4 vehicles. Rich

Sorry to change the subject, but I just purchased a '99 Silverado LT, extended cab 4x4 with the 5.3L engine. I was wondering if anyone knew of any cat-back exhaust systems or headers that are being made for these vehicles that would give good horsepower and torque gains without making the vehicle appreciably louder. Also, if anyone knows if there are any superchips or programmers for the 5.3, I would also be interested. Thanks for any and all assistance.

At the www.wheels.com site, many delays are listed with TBD at the end. What does that mean? I bet I'm going to feel foolish when someone explains it to me. Rich

I think Gibson has the catback and Hypertec has power programer computer programer

Unfortunately for this dealer, I'm not that easy
to push over! I had a long talk with the local
district service manager and he said an
authorized Chevy dealer CANNOT refuse warranty
work. It is in their franchise agreement with
Chevrolet. NO ONE needs to be that rude to a
customer when they hang up on them! I hope others
take my advice and stay away from getting the
power bucket seats with the cheaply made center console! Both are extremely annoying
and made of very poor quality - no ifs, ands, or buts about it! For one, the seats are made exactly
the same (fit, design, and comfort) in both
split bench and bucket seats. For two, the power
seats take longer to move forward than just simply
pressing a lever on the manual seats in order to
get to the extended cab. For three, there is much
more front interior room available with split
bench seats over buckets since the cheap and bulky plastic center console takes up way too much room!
Words of advice for potential buyers! Take it for
what it is worth (a penny?)

Of course, complaints about 'loose rattly fixtures' if the fixtures are really purely designed would not be warranty work, and the dealership would not be reimbursed for any work performed to try to correct the problems. That doesn't explain rudeness, but I think you'll find that its behind their reluctance to touch the problems.
  • stanfordstanford Member Posts: 606
Of course, that should be 'poorly' not 'purely' designed. Bleah. One of those days.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one waiting for a 2500. My order went in Nov.5 and it finally got a build date of Jan 11. Most of the chevy dealers around here haven't gotten very many in.But I did read that production at the plants are up to speed .That strike didn't help the intro. of the new truck at all. I have been test driving as many as I can. It was hard to order something you haven't driven. Now I know what I'm getting. I ordered a 2500 4x4 LT ex-cab sb with 373 diff.I didn't go with the firm ride susp. or 410 diff. because I don't plan on loading this truck down alot. Some towing but not alot. The 410 was impressive at the lights, and the brakes are great. My wife drives a 99 1/2 suburban and the brakes were gone in 10,000 miles.I'm glad they fixed that. It's going to be worth the wait. Good luck

Went to the dealer on 29th of Dec. with every intention of ordering a 99 Silverado 1500 LS,4x4,5.3,firm ride, tow package, limited slip 3.73,245 tires, bench seat, short box,Lt.Pewter.There was one on the lot with the Z71,bucket seats,am/fm cas CD player, deep tint,265 tires.Only have about 300 miles on it so far we live in Up State NY and in Feb. we are going to Colorado Springs and coming back though Houston,up though Nashville. Its been pretty cold here, single digits, teens and 20's but I haven't had any noisies or clunks in any part of the truck yet.It has been running very good and I am really pleased with it

I'm still waiting..............Tomorrow will be 15 weeks. I ordered this 1/2 ton, club cab, 4.8 liter, 4X4, LS on Sept. 28, built on Dec. 21, turned over to transport on the 22nd. My dealer said it scheduled to be delivered on Jan. 4th. Does this seem to be a normal timeline? I've never ordered a vehicle before, and I doubt I will ever order one again. I think it is easier to just get one off the lot.

    jxyoung-
Most Chevy dealers have a person who is in charge of monitoring vehicle deliveries to that dealer. Find out who it is at your dealer and keep in touch with them.
I expect you'll have the truck within the next week.

    Greetings davek3, fetz, 26andrewl:

I appreciate the replies to the questions I had about the 1999 Silverado issues. I plan to get my truck in the next few months, however, I am going to wait 1) for the new design bugs to work themselves out, and 2) to make a bigger down payment.

This forum has phenomenal growth which proves the intense interest of the subject matter and the desire of its participants to share good info, opinions, and advice.

    Thanks.

Has anyone else had problems with the rear swing out windows. It seems that while driving the air pressure sucks the windows out and there is a lot of wind noise. The latches don't seem to lock close and the noise can be stopped if you push the latch closed harder. Just wondering?
  • jxyoungjxyoung Member Posts: 156
Talked to my dealer and found out my truck is still in Canada. The transport co. is supposedly covered in snow ands unable to load. Dealer asked me to call Monday and they are putting high priority on it. No idea when it will come?
  • cookie1cookie1 Member Posts: 68
Wind noise. Oh yes, I have that problem too, but
only when there is 30 plus m.p.h. winds while
driving over 60 m.p.h.. The huge rear quarter
pop out windows do not latch tight like the
1998's and previous C/K Silverados did. Yet another flaw in design. I must say that even
though, so far with only 3,000 miles on it, the
engine and transmission are good, the interior
components suck big time! Huge disappointment
in quality production from the Oshawa, Ontario
Canada plant who built my 1999 Silverado EXT. CAB! I have other minor design problems with the
1999 trucks, but I doubt Chevrolet will listen
to me. My main problems are still with the cheap
center console and power bucket seats!

I was at my local dealer looking for the '99 regular cab, stepside bed, and was told that this "setup" wasn't going to be built until y2k. I think the salesguy was making this up, is this true. Although I do live in Hawaii and we don't get vehicles as quick, or the selection the mainland has, we still get them. Any comments or suggestions would be great!
  • hubbap1hubbap1 Member Posts: 19
I saw a stepside regular cab silverado yesterday in Wisconsin, so they are making them. It was pretty sharp looking too - nice fast looking black.

Had my 99 Sierra for 700 miles now. I have owned nothing but GM is the past and I am disappointed with the Build quality of this truck. On delivery, the 4WD did not work, the ventilation fan made a loud howl when being turned on and off, and there is alot of interior cabin noise. Also I get a loud rattle from under the cab when accelerating out of low RPM around 40 MPH. The only good news is I have a great dealer that is either ordering parts to fix or fixed the problems. I don't want to knock the truck though because I think overall it's the best out there currently and I am happy with the ride, engine, trans, etc. It just seems GM is dropping the ball by making there long time customers mad with long order times and confusing holds and then to get a truck that was put togther sloppy.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Hey cookie1, how do you like your power seats? ;o)
I'm glad I went reg cab with vinyl 40/20/40....

Anybody even seen vinyl seats on a new silverado?
Got a build week of Jan 24th for my plain jane 1/2 ton 4x4. About a month from when my order got preferenced. Not too bad. Do any of you all have guesses as to when the vehicle will show up in Flagstaff, AZ?
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
No fold down armrest on the 40/20/40 seats if you got the base model ! Didn't see any vinyl yet ! What did you order ?
  • kent123kent123 Member Posts: 61
I like the leather buckets in my LT and the console, although far from perfect, isn't that bad. I have experienced no rattles or other noise from either.

The only disappointment so far has been the tires (OWL) that came on the truck. I've been back twice now for re-balance. Vibration at 65-70 MPH won't go away. Last visit two days ago, dealer said there is a TSB on those tires and they would order me a new set if 2nd balance didn't cure.

Otherwise, a really nice truck to own.

I have been seeing lots of folks out their having problems with minor interior or finish on the new Silverado... Let me remind all of you... this is still a truck, and they have come a long way from what they used to be. Noise used to be a given. I know you pay more now but so is everything else. I think if you buy a First year vehicle you have to know that everything is not going to be perfect. GM has done alot of changes in this truck and I think this one stands above all the rest. I have owned 9 new GM trucks over a span of 30 yrs and have had problems, but none bad enough to change to another make. I have also driven Dodge and Ford products that my employer uses many miles and I am still sold on GM. Also remember... GM is union. A happy worker will build a better truck.

To MarkBuck: I ordered the reg cab LS model, cloth 40/20/40 bench, but I'm getting them re-covered in leather for $895 at Sew Fine. They also had some custom vinyl products that look so much like real leather, it's hard to tell.

I WAITED FIVE MONTHS FOR A EXTENDED CAB 4X4,LS,
LEATHER BENCH SEATS,TWO TONE PAINT, EVERY OPTION.
DURING THAT TIME I SAW MANY SILVERADOS THAT WERE NOT PUT TOGETHER RIGHT REGARDING FIT AND FINISH. WHEN MINE CAME IN IT APPEARED EVERY THING WAS OK,
BUT AFTER TAKING IT FOR A TEST DRIVE I STARTED TO SEE PROBLEMS. THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF ALIHGNMENT, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS CROOKED, THE INTERIOR PANEL OVER THE REAR SIDE WINDOW WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, AND THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR POP OUT
WINDOW HAD A HUGE AMOUNT OF WIND NOISE,OBVIOUS
WEATHER STRIPPING PROBLEM. THE DEALER AND I AGREED
THESE SHOULD BE EASILY FIXABLE PROBLEMS AND I WOULD COME BACK IN A FEW DAYS AFTER THESE AREAS WERE TAKEN CARE OF AND TAKE DELIVERY.UNFORFUNTLY
THE WINDOW WEATHERSTIPPING ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN A
PROBLEM FOR ALOT OF OTHER SILVERADOS AND HE SAID IT COULD TAKE UP TO 4 WEEKS SINCE IT IS ON BACK ORDER. THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS GOING TO TAKE DELIVERY, WHY BUY SOMETHING THAT NOT RIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE? THE DEALER HAD TO PLACE THE TRUCK
OUT ON THE LOT THEY COULDN'T LET THE VEHICLE SIT
UNSOLD FOR 4 WEEKS WAITING FOR PARTS, THAT WAS OK
WITH ME. I THINK I WILL WAIT FOR YEAR 2000 MODEL
THEY SHOULD HAVE THE BUGS WORKED OUT, I GUESS IT IS TRUE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT FIRST YEAR VEHICLES,
ONE LAST THING THE Z71 OPTION SEEMS MORE FIRM
THE PREVIOUS MODELS. IF YOU LIKE BOUNCING AROUND
GO FOR IT, TRY ONE WITH THE Z85 FIRM SUSPENSION OPTION, IF YOU DO PRIMARILY ON ROAD DRIVING.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Quad500- The re-cover might be a good option if I end up hate'in the vinyl.
Also, was gonna try to convert the center seatback to fold down.
I ordered a 1/2 ton, 4x4, reg cab, base trim, 4.8L, 5speed, camper mirrors, LT245/75 tires, limslip, AC, sliding window, cruise, 4.10, skid plates, big air cleaner, no carpet. Have a Reese Class IV hitch and a Penda bed mat on order.
Thinking about doing the Rhino lining just for the tailgate (go in with my buddies SD and get the tailgates done at the same time hopefully for a discount).
Anybody look at the front bed rail and decide how to reiforce it? Anybody seen a diamondplate cover for the front of the bed? Two dirt bikes tied down tight seem to eventually bow even the american truck beds.

Think I should ask my salesman to see if I could go on the initial ride-around (I think he called it a 'P&E')? I'd hate for the 'guys in back' to womp the heck out of that brand new 4.8L.

Im the happy owner of a 5.3 4X4 LS extended cab with split bench seats, and am not having ANY of the problems mentioned here. Perhaps my dealer did a better job of prepping the vehicle, but I have no rattles, wind noise, etc. The more I drive THE TRUCK the more I like it (300 miles now). If you have doubts, compare THE TRUCK to the competition. A side by side comparison will clearly show an objective consumer which is the better vehicle and better fvalue (for my needs at least).

One area that I could use some help with is use of the block heater. Does it heat the oil or coolant? Can I leave it plugged in all night or should I plug in an hour or so before driving? Is ther any possibility of engine damage from using the block heater, or is it better to use all the time? Is there a temperature below which you should use the block heater? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hey Bob85, dhg1337,

Maybe #198 (Silverado Problems) would like to
test drive my truck and see for himself what
an un-perfect truck Chevy makes! I am a consumer,
and as a consumer spending nearly $30,000 on
a vehicle (1/2 a house in some parts of my area
and more than I make in salary in a year), I
DEMAND perfection on my vehicle right from the
    factory! Unfortunately, Chevrolet does not!
I can guarantee anybody if they drove my truck
for one week, my interior noise, etc. would
absolutely drive them insane! My suggestion to
anyone who is completely happy with their 1999
Silverado to keep it forever, because from what
I'm hearing from others, there is a lot of minor
and major quality of workmanship going into these
    new trucks.

The ratio of problems/no problems owners seems to be about 50/50. One person who was unhappy said his truck was built in Canada. Mine was built in Michigan and have not had one problem in the 2000 miles I've put on it. Let's here from you owners as to problems/no problems and where the truck was built.
And yes the Z71 ride is very stiff, but my wife likes it that way;)
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
Take the whole center seat out and put in the floor console that comes with the bucket seats . You could probaly order it from GM.
  • page3page3 Member Posts: 54
I would love to test drive your truck,#204 but it won't change things. If I spent my years salery on any vehicle,I couldn't afford to drive it! And I would really be mad,you bet! It sounds like you should spend a little time at the dealership stating you case,or if that doesn't work write some letters and let gm know your not happy. In any case,we as new truck (test drivers) are going to have some defects to deal with. Just pretend your a quality manager for gm. My truck is being built next week, I hope a nobody at the plant has a hangover.

Block heater - heats coolant, leave it on forever with no damage, probably really important at temps below 0 deg F. If electricity were free, I would plug it in always

Dave40 - great idea on the center seat!
