I hope the NOAA weather warnings interruption for the GM radio is optional. Used to be a tornado "warning" meant it was sighted. Today, they infer the possibility from doppler radar. That instance should instead be treated as a "tornado watch" in my opinion. So you get a lot more warnings now, which is good. But lots of them turn out to be false, which I guess is good also, unless you are trying to listen to uninterrupted music.

I plan to purchase a 2000 Chevy Silverado 2WD Short bed pickup with the 5300 engine and a 3.73 rear gear with a locking differential. Does anyone have any information on the 2000 truck?
any improvements, change in style, horsepower, price. ETC.

Fender Flares will be optional on the 1500s I heard.

Does anyone know if the G80 is readily available on dealer stock on the lot. I had heard that it was a restricted item a while back. Not true anymore? Thanks.

Just got back from my whirlwind tour of Colorado. Towed a 5,000 lb travel trailer (straight axles, very tall) with dirt bike and tons of gear in the long bed. My truck is a Silverado 4x4 5 speed 4.10 rear end reg cab long bed 4.8L.
Excellent performance, held speed limit in most all places. The neat thing about this gas motor is that I can use any of the top three gears at most highway speeds.

Fuel economy for the first 600 miles of the trip, with average speeds from 60 to 70 mph, towing over one 10,500 ft pass was 10.5 mpg.

My buddy towed the travel trailer home, so I ran back to AZ with just a full long bed, running the AC most of the way, and I finally got the 18 mpg as advertized by the EPA.

Temp gauge never moved off 200, whether I was running downhill or uphill at 4,500 rpm in second gear. My LT245/75 tires worked great at speeds up to 90 mph.

I am extremely pleased with my short stroke Silverado. Now, if that dang pinion seal would just stop weeping.....

PS. Did great the first 105 miles in the Collegiate Peaks reliability enduro until I got lost 2 miles from the finish and DNF'd. Dooh! Had two newbie riders with us, one ended up with a face puncture and 11 stitches, the other (14 yr old) missed a turn and rode his KDX into 5 feet of water in a beaver pond. His dad caught it on video. They both claim that they will finish next year's race......

Oh ya, one negative. Pinged like hell (even after the software update) on 87 octane while towing the big load across relatively level ground at 5,000 ft for about 250 miles.
Switched to 91 octane, ping gone. In the future, will run premium when towing, 87 octane when not.

Has anyone received a 1999 Silverado with the
Z82 Trailering Special Equipment package which Includes 7-lead wiring harness and HD auxiliary transmission cooler and found out the transmission
    cooler is missing?
Does anyone know what GM is doing about this? The dealer never mentioned it was missing.
Seems to me I paid for it and it should be on the truck.

    thanks

Just found this site yesterday and going cross-eyed reading all the back posts. Lots of good info here!
Ordered my Truck Two days ago! A Y2K, LS, 3/4 ton, ext cab, SB, 4X4, 6.0L, Auto, 3.73, Autotrac, Locker, Trailering Equip, and other misc goodies. Still have time to change my order and would like to find out if anybody knows the new colors for 2000, Also what's the fuel mileage on the 3.73 vs the 4.10. If the 4.10 isn't that much worse I might change to it.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
Get the 4.10 the 3.73 is weak for the 2500. I test drove the 3.73 no guts!
The 4.10 is quick and fun to drive. You migh lose 2 or 3 MPG but its well worth it !

What engine is equal to a 350? That engine has been very good to me.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
    6.0
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
In power output, the 5.3L and 6.0L are both similar to the old 350. The 5.3L is a 327, and the 6.0L is a 360 cu in.

But what you have to keep in mind is they are an all new design. Any resemblance to the old 350 (or 327) is just coincidental.

The new engines are related to the engines in the Corvette, Firebird and Camaro Z28, and benefit from extensive development on those platforms. They have been adapted for truck applications with cast iron blocks, and 6-bolt, cross-bolted mains. They have revised valve placement with equal length intake runners, and a revised firing order.

The bottom line is a new engine family that in general achieves all things at once over their predecessors, better economy, power, and smoothness, quieter.

But they ain't the old 350 if you are into nostalgia. But you can still get those for a while longer in the C/K series trucks.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
The new 5.3 has only 315lbs
of torque vs 335lbs in the old 350 on the 6.0 you get 355lbs of torque !
  • mportermporter Member Posts: 11
Dave-40, What kind of mileage did you end up getting on that Florida trip? Also, How's that bad-a** 6.0 treating you with the aftermarket add ons? Sounds like a pretty hot set-up, got me thinking already about mine.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
    This 2500 reg-cab 4.10
    rear is One Nice Ride
after my 96 5.7 this thing
    hauls! I had similar mods
on the 5.7 but there is no
    comparison to the 6.0 !
My first mod was the AirAid cold air induction,>>Really improves throtle response, sounds Awesome too! then the HPPIII,Dual 40 Series Flowmasters, I ended up flying to Florida but MPG is improving gettin 11city 14 highwy

Alright.. I'm just about done waiting to put my money down for a Silverado. I've been eyeing on it for the last 6 months or so. I'd like to know what are the ups and down on ordering a new model when it even hasn't come off the line? I do know I want a 4th door. I know what package I'd like to order and what options I want included. So I do order one next week I realized I will be waiting 4-6 more months before I finally get it. So tell me if its worth going ahead an ordering a 2000 model.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
NO get one now! you can't wait that long>>4doors will take 6 months
  • jbostajbosta Member Posts: 2
dave40 - I also ordered a 2000 Silverado and the dealer tells me there is a constraint on the 4th door and a constraint on leather?! I know prices are not out yet but did I understand correctly when you said previously it will take 6months for the 4th door to arrive (i.e. December)?

    Thanks!!!
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
My LT has been built, but has been waiting in Canada due to a national rail car shortage. It's been delayed a week already; looks like at least another before it gets here.

    Darn!

In other news, the dealer neglected to add the extra capacity air cleaner to my order. Is this something I should care about (i.e. should I add it later) or is the standard air cleaner ok for city use?

    Richard
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
The extra capacity cleaner is no big deal! I chucked mine and got the AirAid cold air induction> it comes with a K&N air filter

Rumor has it the 4-door model will be running late not sure how late.

Purchased a 4WD extended cab LS-5.3 on 6/9. Truck was made in Canada in May. I can find nothing wrong with it.No rattles, no squeaks, no wind noise or any of the usual complaints

Seems that they have all the bugs out,at least in the one I purchased.

Just test drove a 99 silverado today. Noticed front passenger seat very uncomfortable. Driver seat was a little better. Also noticed that it seamed like you were sitting very close to the floor. My wife made the same comment after the drive. Can somebody tell me whats going on with the seats, or is it just our imagination.
    THANKS
    J.D.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
you can raise the seats up & down

I too am ready to order a 4th door y2k. Two dealers tell me it will be at least December before I can get a 4th door. It depends on how much you want/need a 4th door. I have a 97 3dr. It is the pits to vacumn. But mostly I need the extra door on the driver side and I cann't see buying another 3rd door on the passenger side. Also I am wanting an LT 3/4 4x4 so I'll probably have as long as wait as possible. Neither of the dealers I have contacted want to even take an order from me. That should tell me something. But there are so many other good features on the Chevy over the Ford or Dodge (in my opinion) that I hate to go that route either. Maybe I'll win the power ball (88 Million) and have a custom 4th door installed(g). Rich

Does anyone know if Chevrolet is building their Silverado trucks with the ZX3 "Ride Control" suspension option yet? I want to order this option on a new Regular Cab Short Wheel Base truck but I heard they were having trouble getting it to work. Also I want the 255/70R16 tires versus the standard 235/65R16 tires. Do the bigger tires improve the appearance and performance of the truck and is it work the extra bucks? Please respond I am about to drop major bucks and don't want to make mistakes.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
    Get the bigger tires!
You can alaways get better aftermarket shocks Edelbrock IAS or Bilstein

How do you turn off the automatic door locks. I can't believe that GM didn't make them auto unlock.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
The dealer has to do it. He re-programs the computer.

Has anybody noticed how cheap the brackets that hold the front auxiliary lights are made. When I drive down a rough road I can see the lights vibrating.

Or that strange noise that seems to be coming from under my dash that sounds like something leaking.

I have a 1500 Ext Cab Z71 step-side with the 5.3L. I think it has every option that was available

Does anyone know of a YELLOW replacement bulb for the fog lights? Seems kind of strange for chevy to deliver fog lights that are white. Wouldn't mind increasing the intensity either but definitely would like the bulbs to be yellow.

I'm trying to find out where my Silverado is in shipment. Customer Service told me it was shipped from the plant in Canada on the 15th and to follow up with my dealer. So far that has been a blank wall. Does any one know what info is available to the dealer on shipments?

I plan to order a 2500 ext cab 4x4 which will be used to occasionally haul an 8000 lb (loaded) horse trailer. The GM information indicates that the 373 differential is adequate. Should I order the 410. What is the difference in gas mileage?
  • clickclick Member Posts: 2
Hi! I'm not very familiar with trucks (at least I'm honest about it, LOL), and am considering the Silverado as the truck to get. I'm kinda of confused about all the special ordering everyone is talkin about here. Will I not be able to buy a new Silverado 1500 Reg Cab 4WD LS LB right off the lot? What kind of prices have you been seeing? Thanks for any help you can give me!!

Some advice, be sure and test drive the silverado at crusing speed 65+ mph before signing anything. If it shakes (watch passenger seat or your coke or coffee ripples,) test drive another one. Its not tires or any of the conventional causes. At present, there is no fix for this paticular problem. I will now test drive the specific vehicle I am planning on buying at all speeds before signing.

Has anybody been able to use GM BuyPower? I get errors. I have sent emails to them with no reply. It is at www.gmbuypower.com Also I have IE 3.02. Can anybody get it to work with that release? Maybe I need to upgrade but I hate to without knowing if it will fix the problem. Also my old computer is nearing capacity. The new fancy gizzmos of 4.0 and 5.0 may cause and over load. The main feature of it I would like to use is key in a truck like I want and see if any dealer in the area has one with my features. ....... Rich

There is apparently a shortage of rail cars in the US and Canada, so my LT that was expected by the 10th of June is now slated to be at the dealer by the 29th. I DID find out that it is "on the way" finally!

Just drove 600 miles pulling 6500 lb boat plus a full load in the bed, got 10 mpg at 70-80 mph and a outside temp. of 110.Everthing stayed nice and cool. The gas tank had me making more stops than I wanted.I really have no need for a long bed but the x-tra gas would be nice.I also have found that the rubber covers at the hood hinge make alot of noise.I have a hood deflector and wonder if that is causing the problem.I love the 3.73 on the highway, and the tow haul mode.Cruising at 70-80 you can pull hills and still gain speed when towing!I had a 1 ton 454 3.73 pulling the same load, the silverados performance and handling is great.I did use a higher octain fuel to counter the ping that I had in other trips and had a software update. No pings!

    page 3 -

Sounds like a nice truck - Yes, the deflector is the source of the
noise - see topic 689 for more info on this.

It comes from the rubber on either side (up-down direction) of the
windshield - I used Black RTV under the moulding to make it go away -
worked great. Don't worry about the Silcone v.s Urethane debate - it
only matters if BOTH materials go on "wet" at the same time and try and
    cure . . .

    hope this helps
  • knobbyknobby Member Posts: 60
I'm sorry to report that the source (his and mine) of the wind noise is indeed coming from the rubber flaps over the hood hinge. I have personally seen them flapping and vibrating when pushing a lot of air or in a cross wind, the sound is like a hard driving rain hitting the windshield. I to have a bug and stone deflector (Lund) and I didn't have the noise before I installed it. Later.
  • mksalemmksalem Member Posts: 42
No doubt that the hood hinge covers do a lot of flapping . . . the "noise" however seems to be curable by securing the vertical rubber along the sides of the windshield and not doing anything to the hood hinge covers - the "official" GM deflector (with a GM p/n) add-on includes two sided tape and a instruction that tells you where/how to put it on. I chose a more permanent method using the RTV (didn't like the idea of tape - was wondering how it would hold up after 10 zillion truck washings). As someone else pointed out however, if I ever replace the windshield I should plan on replacing the side mouldings as well (or spend a lot of time peeling away the RTV) - open the door and fold the mouldings back - you will see that they remove with 5 Torx head screws . . .

My Silverado has the wind noise at the ext. cab side windows, an exhast leak, and a light knocking noise in the front end. The dealership has yet to fix any of them! Friday they replaced some rubber bushings on the sway bar. They told me that they have had some problems with them squeaking. I said, "I didn't have a squeaking problem, I have a KNOCKING problem!" They said, "well try this and let us know if it helps". This kind of blind diagnostics is outrageous. These dealerships must make a fortune this way!

I have just put 500 miles on my 2500 LS extended cab truck and have had no problems as of yet. Used the autotrack a couple of times on some steep grass hills and it works great !
Hope my luck holds out. I will be towing a 8000 lb (wet) 5th wheel. Plan to make my first trip next week on some pretty serious hills. 5% to 8% grade. Let ya'll know how it does.

I am planning on purchasing a 2000 silverado 1500 auto/sportside. I want a quick truck but dont know whether to go with the 4.8 or 5.3. I dont mind paying the extra cash but is the pickup on a 5.3 much faster. Also i am going to install dual exhaust...how much does this drop gas mileage. The MPG on the 5.3 is estimated 1mpg less than the 4.8, is that really the case?
Also I heard that gear ratios play a large part in 0-60 pickup... if i want a quick start should i go with a 3.43 rear axle ratio or the 3.73.
  • dave40dave40 Member Posts: 582
Get the 5.3 the 4.8 is for chicks
  • chevy4mechevy4me Member Posts: 203
If the 4.8 is for the chicks then why is the 6.0 a chick magnet?
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
If your truck toted 3000 lbs of corn you'd have chicks too!
