Where are you doing business with the dealer? I am getting a similar offer on an AWD EX-L in Northern Virginia. OTD Price offer, without any negotiations, yet, was $26,202.00. Sales tax approximately 757, destination fee was 670, processing fee was 399, title and tags abt 54. Dealer is Hendrick Honda in Woodbridge. Any houghts on how to get them to knock off an additional $500 or more?

    Thanks!

    EFPAT,

Could you please itemize your fees from DCH Paramus and reveal the name of your salesperson? I'm looking to pull the trigger on the exact same vehicle.

Honda Carland in Roswell. I did negotiate on an AWD. Did not think it is necessary here in Atlanta, Winters are mild enough and I do no towing. What prices have you been getting?

    Breakdown:
    $18,339.18 Base
    $670.00 Destination
    $19,009.18 Sub-Total
    Tax, Tag, Junk Fees
    $20,700.00

Tommyd, My car is a 2008. I bought it in Paramus NJ. I got four dealers to give me a price. I asked for the price of the car (making sure to ask if it did or did not include the destination charge), the price of the doc fee, the price of the registration fee and then any other fees. I did not ask about the sales tax or the NJ tire tax because the dealers don't charge those taxes, they just collect them. I learned that the registration fee in NJ is mandated by law but I found that I got different quotes because some people simply made a mistake. So in the end the only two variables are the price and the doc fee. The destination fee is also the same and I found not negotiable. I got quotes from DCH Honda in Paramus, RT 22 Honda in Hillside, Sussex Honda and Middletown Honda in Middletown NY.

As for your question, if its a 2008 simply tell them you are about to buy a "year old" car and they should sell at invoice to get them to move it out to make room for the 2009s. If its a 2009, tell them that even though its a small SUV, the mileage ain't that great and if they want to move the car they should deal. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Mquillen, Thanks. I just bought it home and we are very pleased. This was the best negotiation I ever did. I owe you, and the others on the board, a real thank you for all your insight and help. Good luck with your decision. EFPAT

Oddpath, The rules of the forum do not allow me to post names, email address or phone numbers. Sorry.
I learned during my research that the only two prices that are variable are the price of the car and the doc fee. The destination charge is 670 and I could not get anyone to lower it, the registration fee is mandated by state law, it does change depending on if you have lien or not. I did not so it was 234. I believe its 254 if there is a lien. The doc fee was 199. There are two taxes. 7% of the price and the $7.50 new tire tax!! But, as I've said elsewhere, the dealers don't charge those (our friends in Trenton do) , they just collect them. That's all I paid. I got quotes from DCH Paramus, Middletown Honda in Middletown NY, Route 22 Honda in Hillside and Sussex Honda. Route 22 gave me the best price on the car but their doc fee was 350. So I called the salesperson at DCH. He met the price and I saved 150 on the fees. I was very suprised that I found one dealer that was 500 under invoice right off the bat and I convinced another dealer to match. BUT these are 2008s and they want to deal. As I said in another post, I owe a great deal to mquillen. Take the time to read his posts. He has a lot of knowledge to share. Good luck. EFPAT

Hi efpat2, may I ask if the amount of $24992 you paid included tax? Thanks!
  • efpat2efpat2 Member Posts: 11
No. That Price does not include tax. It is simplly the amount I paid for the car and the destination charge. I also paid 199 for doc fee. The amount of tax I paid was 7% but I don't think including tax in these discussions is meaningful. The tax car dealers collect is different in each state. I get screwed in NJ with a high state sales tax. Other states charge a lot less. On these boards people talk about the Out The Dorr price which includes all costs including tax but thats not an accurate comparision. The comparsion price should include only those cost charged by the dealer - the car, the destination charge, the document fee and the registarion fee. Trenton charges the tax, not the dealer.

I just had one of the best dealership experiences I can remember. The dealer actually stood by their quoted pricing that we negotiated over the 'net. The negotiation was tough but straitforward. They really played hardball regarding accessories; however, they never misled me and they were receptive and honest with all dealings. The dealer is Honda Marysville.

Base price of the vehicle was $24,841; doc fee $249.50; tax $1,693.63; title and 30 day tag $15.50. Total out the door price: $26,799.99. And that also included quite a few free car washes.

As I've stated before, there are a lot of factors that effect pricing: length of time on the lot, inventory in transit, a given month's sales volume, '09s on the horizon, overhead, etc., so pricing can be changeable. The point I'm trying to make is that this seems to be a very honest and well run dealership. I've talked to a lot of dealerships in the area, and some are downright liars. They know who they are.

The Honda extended warranty they quoted was $795, which is a very good price. I have a policy of not taking extended warranties, but I'm actually reconsidering it at that price. The only minor misstep this dealer made, in my opinion, was offering a protectant package at over $500+, but it was not what I would call a super high pressure pitch.

This dealership, less than 30 minutes from Columbus, is about 10 miles from the East Liberty, OH plant, where the CR-V is produced in the states (and also nearby to the Accord plant). In fact, you'll see the occasional white uniformed Honda of America Mfg. employee there to pick up their vehicle which they can purchase through the employee purchase program.

Also, due most likely to the abundance of Hondas in the vicinity of the plant, the dealer has what appears to be a thriving service department, with their service business having allegedly grown over 43% in the past year (the dealership is only 4 years old or so). Someone has to service all of those Hondas, as even Hondas require maintenance.

I couldn't be happier with the CR-V. Now to cancel that Subaru that's weeks overdo.

Thanks so much for your thoughts mquillen and all are valid considerations. As an investment analyst I was just trying to quantify the differential in the value of a 2008 versus a 2009 given one is theoretically a year old. Not easy to do and I think my concentration will just be on getting a reasonable deal rather than trying to figure an unknown value 3 to 5 years into the future :)
  • turbododgeturbododge Member Posts: 10
Probably the best, and easiest, way to quantify the 2008/2009 value thing is to look at used CRV values right here on Edmunds. If you stay within a generation of CRV, you can compare year to year values for essentially identical vehicles and get a pretty good idea of the value drop at each year. I did a bit of this to prove/disprove the idea that 4WD returns all or more of its original purchase cost at resale.
  • mquillenmquillen Member Posts: 71
Sorry, I missed the point that you are an investment analyst, lol. You certainly don't need my advice whether to pay cash or not. From what I've seen, 3 years out a model year difference might be $800 to $1200 on a $25K vehicle, assuming equally maintained vehicles in like condition, like mileage, and no major model change. The beauty of used cars is that no two are alike. Service records and condition can go a long way to nullifying a model year difference. Since you're a data cruncher, www.automobilemag.com lists resale values in tabular form in their used car section. I doubt that I would have purchased an 08 at this time had there been any significant changes coming on the new model.

Does your CR-V come with navigation system?

    Hi,
Looking to buy a Honda CRV EX FWD with just the splash guard and floor mats. MSRP as configured on Honda site comes to 23,826 . Does anyone know what would be a good buying price at this time in the SF South Bay area?

    What incentives are available?

    Thanks!
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
Thanks Turbo....I'll take a quick look at that to at least get an idea. Of course not to be overly sexist but...being a female, I'll probably do all this "analyzing" and then make my decision based on available color
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
Mcquillen....these days I can use ALL the help I can get!

I'll also take a look at automobilmag.com. I'm also contemplating a Rogue but I'm afraid it's really too small for what I need it for and although I've not owned a Honda to date, I know many who wouldn't go elsewhere.

  • speedracer007speedracer007 Member Posts: 33
mquillen - Just to make sure, your quote of 24841 includes dest right? So the Base Price you paid for your CR-V would be $651 below invoice (24822 + 670)
  • mquillenmquillen Member Posts: 71
Speedracer, yes, the base price was 24,841 inclusive of destination, no accessories. That is $650 below dealer invoice, inclusive of destination. As I pointed out, Ohio does have a $250 doc fee that puts some profit into the dealers pocket--they have to make money somewhere. Out the door inclusive of 6.75% sales tax was $26,799.99. I'd negotiated to $26,800, as that was the price I thought I needed to justify an '08 over an '09, since I didn't HAVE to buy a car at this time.

We had negotiated accessories, but they didn't want to move much on the accessory pricing--it was then I thought I should just focus on the base price. The dealer had a very busy service department (many older Hondas in the region) and I don't think they wanted to sacrifice more profitable service work to install accessories at a lowball sale price--just my opinion here. I have gone back to the parts department to see if they'd come close to internet pricing on accessories, but they haven't responded yet. I'd like to give them that business if they want it, even though I have closer dealers.

One interesting thing I've run across in my talking to sales people is that American Honda apparently will provide spiffs directly to sales people for meeting certain goals, via a type of a debit card. Though I could be mistaken, I suspect there is some type of incentive being offered on the '08s that isn't readily apparent, and I'm sure the dealerships want to "ride the wave" as long as they can, maximizing revenues on the '08s. Can't blame them I guess. I couldn't be happier with the vehicle.

    Hi ,
I asked for a quote from nearby dealers via edmunds and got a starting quote of 21,580 for a MSRP of 23,620 inclusive of destination charges. Any suggestions what would be a good buying price to negotiate ?

    Thanks!

Buying a 2008 EXL w/Nav, dealer's 2nd offer was 28,000 out the door plus my 850 trade-in. Think I can get them down to 27k with my trade-in? Only one dealer in town... Thanks!

    :)

Has anyone in the Mass area negotiated below $26,000 including destination charges? The sticker price si $29,070.

    Hi,

I just finalized deal for 2008 CRV Lx 4WD for $20200 (including dest chrg) . I think its a good but please let me know if thats indeed a good deal..

I found this forum to be quite useful and wanted to pass along my information for others currently negotiating in NE OH. I just purchased a 2008 CR-V EX-L AWD w/Navi for $28,686 OTD. This was a straight purchase, no trade-in, no financing. The price breaks down as follows:

    Retail Price: $29,070

    Selling Price: $26,661
    Doc Fee: 250
    Sales Tax (6.5%) 1,749
    Reg/Title 25.5
    Total $28,686

I could have had a slightly better deal in NW OH (Brown Honda) but both dealerships located our color combination on the same day (almost simultaneously). We choose to buy local (Classic Honda) and save a long drive. Both dealerships were easy to deal with and very fair. The NW OH dealership's Internet Mgr is incredibly customer service focused and responsive.

The local dealership's first internet quote was $100 above invoice. There are still dealerships that start quoting the above model CR-V EXL at $28,300 and would like you to believe that they're taking a hit at that price level.

Good luck shopping -- there are bargains to be had on 2008 CR-Vs.

Just purchased this vehicle for $25,188 in Tango Red Pearl. OTD price was $27,447.
Sales tax in Orange County is 7.75%

Has anybody in So Cal lately noticed all these new "fees" they add on? There was a "transfer fee", $45 a "smog abt. fee", $20, a "county fee",$11. When I bought my TSX a few years ago there weren't any of these "fees." I had this nagging feeling I was getting ripped off but the price of the car was pretty good so I went along with it.

Did all negotiations via email. Did not go to dealership until the price was settled. Tried to get all-season mats, wheel locks, trunk tray and mud guards for an additional $300 (can purchase these online for $282 delivered) but they wouldn't budge so I took the car as is.

The usually miserable trip to the finance office was actually painless. I just quickly refused everything they wanted to sell me and that was that.

It's very sad that Californians can no longer purchase extended warranties online.
I was able to use that ability as a bargaining chip when I bought my warranty on my TSX from my dealership, using the printout from the online source.
Today they wanted over $1900 for an extended warranty. Needless to say, that discussion stopped pretty quickly.

All in all, pretty easy process, completed in less that one day by sending out dozens of email requests.

We were quoted $20,970 (including destination), which is $1,600 below MSRP, and about $85 below invoice. It does not include the doc fee of $299, 5% MA sales tax, or $110 in title, reg, and inspection fees, so the OTD price is about $22,617. Does this seem reasonable or should we be talking lower at this point in the model year?

    Hi,
I need to buy this week . Please help on what would be a good buy price in SF Bay areafor CRV EX 2WD ? I am getting a internet quote of ~21580 for a sticker price of 23620. Can the buy price be negotiated to under 20K ?

    Thanks!

makemy...I'm about to venture this week to see what I can get on that car and will let you know. I'm north of Boston...where are you?

    New England Area

The Sticker Price is $29, 070 (includes destination)
    Doc Fee's $259 (includes nothing)

    Internet Price: $26, 272

Going to dealship this week to negotiate $300 - $500 less.

    MakeMyDay,

It will be interesting to see if they will go below that price. The best I was able to negotiate in NE OH was $26,500 for the AWD EX-L w/Navi. However, that model had pre-installed accessories that the dealer wouldn't negotiate. As mentioned in previous posts, OH has a $250 doc fee. Good luck and thanks for the info.
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
Makemy...does your 26,272 include everything but taxes? I did hear that Boch will negotiate way down as they have a huge inventory...of course then you have to go find a decent place to get it serviced!
I'll give up a couple hundred for a decent dealership that I trust. Sending out my queries today and will keep you posted (no pun intended of course)
  • makemydaymakemyday Member Posts: 8
The $26,272 for for the vehicle only. Taxes & documentation fee's would add to this price.

I will know this week if the dealership honors their internet price. Keep in mind the 2008 CR-V will be one yr old in the next 4-6 weeks. Need to consider depreciation, economy, inventory & most of all reputation of the dealership. I'd would settle for $25, 800 before taxes & doc fee's.

I understand Boch has a high documentation fee, although I haven't yet notified them for a quote.

    Stay tuned.

Ohio doesn't have a doc fee. They do have a regulation that permits dealers to charge a doc fee, and it may have changed, but the last I heard it was a maximum of $200.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,419
The maximum allowed is now $250... Almost every dealer in the state will try to charge that....

The OH dealerships have it pre-printed on their contracts like it's out of their control and they HAVE to collect it. :) Over the year's I've found it easier to just let them have it. As long as you recognize that it WILL be charged and factor it into your final offer you'll end up in the same place with less hassle.

    Hi,
Does anyone know what is the current APR financing being offered for 08 CRV's? I could not find any offers listed on the Honda site for CRV though there seem to be several low APR offers for Accord and other models.?

    Thanks
  • makemydaymakemyday Member Posts: 8
beaker1966 - I recently visited Herb Chambers in Westbough, MA. I haven't talk price as of yet, but so far the experience has been nice.

I am looking for a the EX-L, 4wd w/nav. I haven't negotiated any price on line (didn't think it would work). Most dealerships still have a good inventory of CR-V's.

Hopefully I'll seal a deal this week.

This looks like a good quote for me. I was not able to get a similar quote in

Can you please indicate the dealership/area where you got this deal ?
Also, is there any other dealership charges like doc. fees to be added this price ?
    Thanks

I live in central NJ and so far the best quote I got for this vehicle was $20,871 (this includes destination) with $199 doc fee. I might decide to go with the FWD since it's more in my budget. I'm still shopping offers for the FWD.
  • turbododgeturbododge Member Posts: 10
According to the press release on TOV, the 2009's should have gone on sale yesterday (8/19). Anybody been to the dealer to see if it really happened? The 2008 is still listed on the Honda site for the CRV, but the Civic models that were to be released yesterday (per the press release) have been changed to the 2009.
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
I've been looking for and can't find the same information. I thought it was 4.99% but supposedly it isn't on CRV's or Civics. I heard 5.75% on those for Tier 1+.

You might want to check AAA if you are a Tier 1
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
I was at a large dealership in MA yesterday. The '09's are in transit, none in the lot. I'm sure if you want an '09 anyone would price it for you. Basically no changes except two colors out, two new colors in....still similar.
  • ykckbyykckby Member Posts: 30
Well my appreciation to Bugg and Mquillen for their input as to "shopping". I sent out inquiries yesterday with specifics as to what information and in what format I wanted a quote. Vehicle is MSRP $29,070 and Invoice 27,068. I got immediate responses from absurd to very reasonable. Went with second lowest because the dealer over the phone was excellent while my phone call to the lowest was a joke. (Q - What do you have on your lot for color? A - Everything. Q - it's the end of the season, you are a small dealer, what do you have in stock? A - we have every color, well ok we will get you what you want. Every 12 seconds was inserted with "so when can you come in and talk about it". Price differential was $200 plus, couldn't get other dealer to split it...but not unreasonable in my mind. Not sure I would buy a quart of milk from the lowest, went to second lowest. Did not try and "play" with other deals that were close...to me there is value in how dealer treats you and you hope to be treated with service that isn't worth quibbling over $100...but that's just me.

    Deal:
    25,587 - price
    670 - destination
    259 - doc prep
    120 - license and registration
    1,342 - sales tax

Internet sales gave it to a salesman who was great when I went in to do paperwork - pleasant and accommodating and you know there was not much in it for him. Extremely easy and comfortable experience. Would absolutely refer people to dealership and to him.

Keys...do your homework, know what you want, compare apples to apples, ignore sales tactics that come from some.

Internet offers seem best when you have done your homework and are ready to buy. Be clear in your request that you are looking for and will compare bottom line quotes and are not looking to "deal" one against another.

And...be careful...some will say that quote is good for only a car in stock....ie if we have to get the car from another dealer it's another few hundred dollars that isn't quantified.
  • mquillenmquillen Member Posts: 71
Ykckby, WOW, great deal, congrats. So, since EVERY color was available, which did you choose, lol. I agree with not shopping for a couple hundred dollars if someone has treated you fairly and honestly right up front--that's not to say we can't try to get the dealer to price match, as you noted. I do think we need to reward the good dealers that try hard to act with integrity.

There's a saying in commodity businesses, but it also applies to cars, since all Honda dealers are selling the same cars: "In a commodity business, it's hard to be smarter than your dumbest competitor." There certainly are a lot of dumb (and dishonest) dealers out there, let's reward those that are neither.

I suspect we're going to start seeing some amazing pricing on the board for the '08's. I also look forward to seeing what the '09's are going to be selling for.
