Take time to visit VM Motori website. They have all the technical info concerning the 2.8L CRD in pdf format. You will see that you get the most out of this engine at 2000 rpm. I've already blown out a turbo diesel several years ago just by trying to follow a diesel VW passat at 90 mph on a german highway during 2 hours. I had kept it floored all the time.
What I learnt is never ever press the gas more than 1/3 of the way with a turbo diesel if you want to keep it! With the Libby this is an equivalent of full cargo at 95 mph (I've seen one blown engine, but I promissed not to say where I saw it). All I can say is the inside looks very much like a motorcycle engine instead of a farm tractor.

My experience has been been that it gets the most optimal mileage at 60 and not 65 75 or 85. Optimal mileage would seem to equate to the longest engine life.

Having had a number of other turbocharged cars, you pretty much want to avoid any boost situation that doesn't conclude in a few minutes. With the awful aerodynamics of the vehicle, I can see how the turbo would have to keep working to keep the thing plowing though the atmosphere at very high speed.

My experience mirrors this re: better mileage at lower cruise speeds. My best mileage to date, with only 1,000 miles on the truck, has been just over 27, on 4 lane rural highways in the hills of Tennessee and Kentucky, cruising 60-65. At this speed, it's almost lugging up the grades. at 75 it seems happier, but you pay the price. 75-80 is the speed of interstate traffic here in SE Michigan, but I only get about 25, even though it's flat. Drives great at that speed though.

BTW, mine seems to love B20 Biodiesel, the mileage isn't any better but it purrs! It's noticeably smoother and quieter.

Saturday May 7, 2005 @ 1:00 pm - arrived at North Point Chrysler Jeep for a test drive of the black Limited CRD on their lot. Had advised the salesrep I wasn't planning to buy a black one, but would like to drive the CRD none-the-less. As any good salesman would, he took me off on a nice drive.

1:30 pm - returned to the lot at conclusion of test drive. There sat a new light khaki Liberty Limited CRD fresh off the trailer. Still had plastic wrap on the interior and needed a bath something terrible. Had virtually every option I could imagine. Has the light color leather - looks great! I think I fell in love...

1:35 pm - walked inside with sales rep and began paperwork on my new light khaki Liberty Limited CRD. Got excellent financing through my credit union (3.75%) and got the car for $2259 below MSRP. I don't buy new cars often, but this seemed like a great deal.

4:45 pm - picked up my new CRD. Still getting to know her, but I am truly impressed by this great little Jeep.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your great buying experience. If everyone insists on buying below MSRP we can stop this gouging that is going on for premium vehicles. Good luck with your new car.

Wife and I bought a 2005 Silver CRD Limited a month ago.

When we were looking at the CRD. We test drove a White one. It had an annoying vibration sound coming from the rear when in gear and at idle. Told dealer about the sound and they knew exactly what to do to remedy it. Guess it is a common problem for these that some of them have and some don't.
The sales guy thought it was the exhaust pipe alignment at the factory. Supposedly there is a place where the pipe and muffler runs that is close to a support. When it is mis-aligned it must rub the support area.

Anyway, just some more information on this problem.

    Congratulations and welcome.

I tried to find a Khaki one and there weren't any in town....lucky you. I am quite happy with my silver one.

Has anyone on this board put in UConnect after purchase or is it horribly complicated? It is, I think, the only option ours didn't come with except side air bags (which is actually something we tried to find with no luck). I didn't want to order a vehicle because of the waiting period.

Post 682-683 mention that a larger muffler and tail pipe were installed

I am interested to learn if DC will be up-sizing exhaust systems on all CRD's

I ordered mine on March 07, 2005 and it gets delivered next Monday!!!

The dealer said 8-13 weeks on special order so he was close with his SWAG :P

I just purchased my new Liberty after waiting for it to come in off of a dealer trade. Less than 24 hours old and under 100 miles it started jerking and the engine light came on. I drove it straight to the dealership. The technician said that it was transmission related. Since I dropped it off on Friday evening, I will have to wait all weekend long and part of Monday until I hear back from the service dept. I am very worried. The feelings inside are worse than buyers remorse. I anxiously awaited the arrival, and now I am having to wait some more. I hope it is something minor.

I bought my CRD in March (4700 miles now) and on occasion it will start jerking, usually on level ground with the cruise control on. It will also downshift while going downhill. I didn’t buy it locally so the dealer told me it would be two weeks before he could look at it. Please let us know what the problem was when you get it back. Thanks!

Also…RE: 727, if anybody has used the Uconnect, please post your thoughts!

I am having the same exact trouble...has anyone found what is wrong...my dealer has only sold one CRD (Mine) so they have no clue on what to do with this new engine/drivetrain combo. If anyone has figured this out...please let us know.

I've got one. Mine hasn't done this. It's a defect. It can be fixed.

The great thing about having a new vehicle is that it has a warranty. It makes the trouble "their" problem. Hopefully, they gave you a loaner to use whilst they are dicking around with it. They know you want it back. Don't take it back until you know it is right. Have them tell you exactly waht the problem was.

For all the hype and glorification we make about vehicles in this country, they are machines to haul people and stuff from point A to point B. That is all. I realize such language is tantamount to heresy to some of those who may read this, but I stand by it.

I had some anguish after I bought mine. I found out the thing had an Italian made engine. I cursed. Did I buy a Fiat? I asked myself. Fiats fall apart. Fiats were always junk. They don't even sell Fiats in the US anymore and you don't see those that they did on the road any more. However, I got over it. The diesel engine purrs along fine. My anguish was self induced. Yours was induced externally by the vehicle. They'll fix the bloody thing at no charge and you'll drive off feeling good.

Be happy you don't have to fix it yourself,..........yet.

    My CRD arrives tomorrow :)

Hope this jerking tranny thing gets resolved!

I wish more CRD drivers would post on this forum.

Edmunds is the only one I have found discussing CRD's. Are there other forums I am missing?

Lastly, has anyone heard of the total number of CRD'd sold in the USA?

    Luck,

Just got my CRD yesterday. Dealer said you can't order anymore. Maybe they are getting tuned up for the 06 model year, but it seemed like a weird statement to me.

Only 50 miles on mine so far, but I will post any problems if they arise.
  • tomasnctomasnc Member Posts: 8

I agree this does sound odd. My dealer said that DC offering '06's in mid year is crazy too!

Good luck with your new CRD!

Dealer said you can't order anymore.

Apparently Jeep isn't taking any more orders for Wranglers either; they have enough orders to take them to the summer shutdown, and they'll start building the '06's then:

If you really want to order one, ask a different dealer. You may get a different answer.

Thank you willysjeep! It is noon on Monday now, and the only thing they have told me is that it is an electrical problem. I hope to know more by later today. Meanwhile, yes they did give me a loaner. I'm sure it can be fixed, when they figure out how! I just want my Jeep! Heck, I'm already paying for it, but it still sits at the Dealership. I will keep everyone posted as to what the diagnosis is. Maybe it will in turn help others not to worry.

I bought my CRD in April and did notice it was jeeking/choking when idling at stops within the first week. We took it in and they updated a chip of some sort. On Mother's day the check engine light came on. It also seems to have lost it's pep... many times when I step on the accelerator, it again was jerking/choking. I took it in for service on Saturday to check it out and they didn't have a diesel tech working Saturday and were keeping it until Monday to work on. I made them give me a loaner! I too am the only CRD they sold at this dealership. I hope I don't regret getting this Jeep!

FWIW, Im glad to see you ll purchasing the CRD. I lvoe diesels. Had a Golf TDI. Was in the shop ZERO times. I only wish VW had an AFFORDABLE diesel sport ute. Good Luck all!

Just an update to my earlier post. I wish I had good news for you all, but I'm positive now after reading more replies, that I am not alone. The service department called and said the Jeep was ready to pick up. The check engine light was caused by a transmission temperature code. They cleared the code and test drove it while monitoring the temperature sensor. Everything checked out OK. When I went to pick it up, upon cranking, the check engine light was on again. So, it is still at the dealership.
  • pttrilliumpttrillium Member Posts: 62
Is the five speed only available on the crd? Or is the transmission problem being described here applicable to the gas engine models as well?
  • spetespete Member Posts: 73
I have been traveling for a few days and came back to notice that there are a lot more postings relating to the "jerking" that is occuring with the Liberty CRD. I have had my Diesel in twice now for reprogramming of the transmission - and after the second update I do believe that it is better. I took it on a 300 mile trip this past weekend - pulling a 900 pound trailer - and did not have it happen once. I did have a lot convertor "shifts" when driving at the 55-58 MPH range. I do feel that that convertor reacts too much in that spped range. There is a lockup at 53 MPH and then you get another one just before 60MPH - too close together. When you have a small load behind it becomes even more sensitive. I locked out the OD - but then you are running consistantly at 2500 RPM's plus - and I did not need the extra power. Anyone else think the convertor goes in and out too much at thses speeds? I will post if I start getting the jerking again. spete
  • caribou1caribou1 Member Posts: 1,354
I have the 2003 automatic (european model). The only way I can get rid of the 'extra shifting' is by reducing my speed and the push on the gas pedal. I find the 3rd gear is a bit too long, the 4th too short and the 5th ok as long as there is no trailor behind. We have many speed control radars over here, and it's a pain to have to overrev the engine to avoid fines! But this is the price to pay to have a common rail diesel that can ride up to 100 mph. I'm wondering why it's geared to go so fast, 85 mph is the maximum we can drive here. A panic situation at such speed requires good understanding of the truck's behaviour, and very few people can face that, especially those who buy this truck to 'parade'.
  • rnaborsrnabors Member Posts: 25
I have about 2000 miles on my CRD and so far everything is performing great. I have not experienced the "jerking". I am getting 21-23 mpg in combination driving and 27mpg on the highway. I love the torque of this engine.

I have ordered a Liberty diesel and it will be arriving at the dealer around the 1st of June.
I currently live a state where you cannot buy the diesel but I have property in Idaho where I spend part of the year and will being moving there in a year or so. With all the talk of problems am I just asking for trouble with service in my state ( California)?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Perhaps you'd like to park it at my house in Boise for the year - I'll be happy to properly break it in for you. :-) :shades:

Tidester's over in Eastern Idaho and would be happy to help too, but diesel fumes make him sneeze or something.

My limited experience during my 5 years in Idaho is that the mechanics here are pretty honest folks.

lol, I asked first! And I'm only an hour away from the largest sand dune in North America (link).

Maybe pick up a used beater for your remaining Cali time and let the Liberty sit in our dry climate while you are away?

service in my state ( California)?

I would think that Jeep would be resposible for the vehicle while you are "vacationing" in CA. They may not have the training. From what I am reading it is still a learning curve at all dealerships. They need to get the experience before next year when ULSD is mandated and CA is awash in new diesel cars. I would recommend that you find an ARCO station near you that sells diesel. It will be the mandated ULSD less than 15 PPM good stuff. I have 2700 miles using it in my new Passat TDI and it is very clean. You cannot smell anything coming out of the exhaust. It is selling at $2.499 currently. That is 10 cents more than regular unleaded.

We've had our Liberty CRD for 6 weeks and the list of problems include:
    1. Transmission / converter jerking between 55-58mph.....My '93 Concorde did this and it was an update to the computer that fixed it.......I'm assuming a fix like this will be along soon, if not already.
    2. Check Engine Light......I retrieved the codes with my scanner and they relate to the EGR and Turbo.....Sorry, can't remember the codes at this moment and they are written down elsewhere.

Taking it in Friday to the local dealer for work on these issues.

I will update after they diagnose and fix it.

I am on my 4th trip back to the dealer on the "jerking" issue, am pretty sure now it is something to do with the tranny... but no one seems to know what, it will not do it below speeds of 53mph, and it will not do it if I lock the O.D. out, it will do it real bad after a hard accel and then resume a steady speed.... this suks...I love the dam thing just wish they could get this dam jerking issue resolved, my dealer ( crystal jeep in brooksville fla) said this is the first of the jerking issue that Jeep has heard about...SO I sent him a link to this site.....then he changed his tune ( must have got a tune up) well 6741 jerking miles later and I still love the CRD.

    1. read every page of the owners manual take special note of unique diesel items.
    2. follow the turbo-cooldown chart every time.
    3. after it is warmed up and you are cruising at highway speeds, go ahead and put the pedal down. The owners manual actually says it's good for it. Who'd have thought?
    4. don't leave it in cruise at the same speed for hours
    5. for the first few hundred miles don't drive at really high speeds.
    6. make a special note of the weird oil viscosity.

We saw our mileage improve right at around a couple thousand miles and now it does what the EPA sticker says.
  • willysjeepwillysjeep Member Posts: 107
"6. make a special note of the weird oil viscosity. "

Weird,.....and expensive. Mobil 1 doesn't come cheap, but a vehicle that will go for 300,000 miles is worth a lot of oil.

A bit over 3,000 on mine now. The power mirrors went out. the dealer fixed them for nothing. It is nice to be running on a warranty. I thought I'd miss the old truck, but I was wrong.

What type and viscosity of oil is required?
  • sailman397sailman397 Member Posts: 15
I have had my CDR now for about 2 months and am averaging around 23-24 around town but not much better on the highway. I usually drive with the cruise control at between 70-75. Will dropping down to 65-70 bring me up to 27 MPG?
  • moparbadmoparbad Member Posts: 3,870
60 mph highway should achieve 27 mpg or higher.

Here is an interesting table. (non Liberty info.)

    mpg vs. mph

    Here's what the book says:

    ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES
Only use synthetic engine oils meeting the API
Categories SL/CF and Chrysler Material Standard
MS-10725. Those engine oils not meeting the viscosity
and API Quality and MS-10725 requirements
    should not be used.

    SAE VISCOSITY GRADE
The preferred engine oil is SAE 0W-40 Mobilt One
Synthetic. If you can not locate SAE 0W-40 Mobilt
One Synthetic, then SAE 5W-40 Mobilt One Synthetic
    would be acceptable.

ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES - EXPORT
Use only Diesel Engine Oil meeting standard MIL-
2104C or API Classification CD or higher or CCML
    D4, D5.

I have had my CRD limited for 2 1/2 months. It has about 2600 miles on it. I'm very disappointed in the milage. I get around 19 mpg in city driving. If I hop on a freeway for a few miles I will get around 20.7 (all according to the onboard computer). The tank is bigger than the 6 cyl Stratus I used to have, yet gets as many miles to the tank as the Stratus did (around 400) :confuse: . Otherwise, it is a fun car to drive.
  • willysjeepwillysjeep Member Posts: 107
I have a few more miles on mine than yours. I checked mine at the pump a while back and got quite a lot better mileage. Of course then I do not do sudden starts, rapid acceleration or drive at high speed. I drive different than most people.

I suggest that you do a self check the next time that you are going on a good highway trip. Then you will see if your computer is scaled properly. I didn't get a computer so I have to fill it up, drive the miles, write them down and fill her again to see how the machine is doing.

The Jeep is much heavier than similar vehicles for some reason. More rugged, perhaps.
  • caribou1caribou1 Member Posts: 1,354
    Do you remember Einstein's formula?
Energy (can be expressed in gallons) = Mass (fixed value when you compare to the same truck) * Speed squared.
This approach works well if you stay within +/- 10% of the same torque value (engine efficiency). I've noticed that relative humidity also plays an important role on the mileage. 60 degrees Farenheit with 50% RH is what I find best for 1000 ft altitude.
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
You left out the part about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle which basically says YMMV independently of all other factors. ;)

    tidester, host
  • caribou1caribou1 Member Posts: 1,354
It's included in the 'mass' constant under fixed temperature and RH.
In our case of figure we would have to compare on the same road, the same day, same everything. What we don't master is the cost of crude oil that will change our habits!

Please note my Post #669. I experienced a similar problem and also was starting to wonder about my decision to buy the CRD. They fixed the problem in relatively short order and I haven't had any similar problems, now just over 3k miles.

I've noticed several postings regarding the jerking which occurs around +/- 55 mph. It seems to be related to the torque converter locking in/out and a shift that occurs right before that. I think it's noticeable on the CRD as the thing has such incredible torque. I suspect you wouldn't notice the jerking if you had the same transmission with a gas engine as it would kick down just to keep moving. I recently had a Blazer that spent most of its time down shifting trying to keep moving. Very frustrating.

I have developed a different style of driving with the CRD due to the turbo lag and different torque. You get used to it. I love my CRD and have absolutely no regrets - NONE!

Regarding mileage, I compare the computer reading each tank with a calculated value and have found the computer underestimates the mileage by about 1-2 mpg. I seem to be getting about 21 city, 27 highway. I'm impressed with the accuracy of the computer and I'm impressed with the EPA estimate.
