U.S. and Arizona average gas price hits $3 per gallon
Stephanie Paterik
The Arizona Republic
May. 4, 2007 11:57 AM
Average gas prices in Arizona and across the country shot above $3 a gallon Friday for the first time since last summer, just in time for road-trip season.
And Phoenix-area consumers are paying more than most at $3.05 for a gallon of regular, compared with the national average of $3.01. Californians have been the hardest hit, with prices hovering around $3.40.
"I think people are getting fed up," said Linda Gorman, public affairs manager for AAA Arizona, which released the bad news. "It has happened two years in a row. Even a little incident causes fuel prices to rise dramatically."
Two factors are pumping up prices this month. Spring supply is limited as oil refineries conduct maintenance, and summer travel demand boosts prices.
Experts wonder when sticker shock will set in.
Conventional wisdom had drivers curbing fuel use at $3 a gallon. But at that price last summer, demand continued to grow in Arizona, just not as rapidly.
Gorman said Arizona prices are likely to climb in the next two weeks before leveling off. The state could reach or surpass last summer's high of $3.10 a gallon.
"If we do hit a high, it's likely to happen sometime in May," she said. "It probably won't go significantly below $3 a gallon for the next couple of months."
Not far from the Record
I didn't hyper-mile the E55, but I took it easy, 95% of my driving under 70. According to the car I average 24.6 mpg. Not too shabby for a big fast engine.
The $3.45 mimics the burbs where I'm at and the $3.65 mimics the city of wind (Chicago). I was in the city over the weekend and it's getting nasty in terms of prices. I didn't go downtown but was told the $3.60 range is for regular :surprise:
By hook or crook we got to break that record before Memorial Day!!
And as many of you mentioned here, I haven't seen anyone slow down, combine trips at this time, very discouraging. I'm now thinking the Cutty isn't going to make it out this summer
Some stations are above $2.90
2.99 up to 3.19
3.09 up to 3.29
as of yesterday, 6 May 07
all the while the oil companies makes super profits and those on fixed incomes suffer.   :P :P

I did see $3.92 on 19th Avenue in San Francisco yesterday.
$4 is about to happen in the Bay Area, no doubt about it.
Switch to guacamole. Your dentist will thank you.
What kind of mileage are you getting in the Imp?

Palomar Airport Road has some of the highest prices in all of Socal. Should be 4.00 for premium anyday.
The San Diego Airport Shell should be at almost 4 bucks for premium.
Right Now Honda is the only CAR company that cares about this nonsense. CNG is here. Hydrogen by late 2008. Be smart and sell your gas guzzler SUV.
Sorry, no change for 89 and 93.

P.S. do you have a house in Hawaii ????? :surprise:
PS
Yes we have a house and we put in an offer on another one.

P.S. Gas prices here are $2.95 to $3.09 in Dumas.
($3.15 for regular in Boise).
Lowest available is $2.919
Up 19 cents in the last 30 days.
Hey - it could be worse. Last year at this time the average in Phoenix was $3.119.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The usually over-priced Speedway dropped from $3.25 to $3.15 yesterday afternoon
3.29
3.39
I always forget to look for the diesel prices.
(very few stations have 91+ for <$3 - maybe only this "Z1").
I ended up looking at the real estate around you in HAwaii. I had no idea you could pick stuff up for that over there. I've never been but, man, could I be persuaded.
Actually down two cents yesterday at teh Jersey shore - $2.79 after it had been $2.81. Must ve the fact that it's a weekday. Prices go up as teh tourists arrive.
89 Octane - $3.70
91 Octane - $3.80
These prices are pretty much the lowest prices in the surrounding area of 50 miles.
I hate that people in other states have no idea of what it's like to pay this much for gas.
I think that if the price in California was reflected in the other states then maybe enough people would complain more and something might be done.
It's not fair that other states are paying a $1.00 less per gallon, especially when some of them get their gas from California.
For those of you who are paying under $3.25 per gallon, try adding another $.50 to $1.00 to the price you pay and see how much you are saving in a month. If your anything like me and go through 6 to 8 tanks a month, 26 gallons that's a lot of money. It was bad enough when we where still paying $2.25 per gallon at the end of last year and everyone else was paying $1.65 per gallon. But now this is just unconstitutional. We are suppose to be United States, UNITED. I do not see anything about us being UNITED when some of us are paying 1/3 more than others for the same product.
There is no excuse for the price we are paying right know, but there is absolutely no excuse for such a large difference in the price from one state to another.

Anyway, there's a mini price war going on at the 2 stations nearest me. The Exxon yesterday lowered its 87 by one cent, to $2.84, matching Liberty on the other side of the road. Then today, Liberty dropped its 87 by one cent to $2.83. No deals though on 89 or 93.
Possibly I'm wrong, but hasn't, doesn't, California pride itself on being first with all these super environmental requirements on things, such as gasoline formulas, because they are, well, they are California. They bring some of this on themselves. If all areas used the same formulation for summer gasoline blends there wouldn't be a backlog building up inventories of special blends. IIRC after Katrina, St. Louis required a unique blend and that was one of the examples mentioned when they forwent the meny different formulas around the country to aid in distrubtions as well as refineries' problems in supplying all the special formulations.
Area prices are $2.84 and up.
Some stations are showing up at $3.19 again for the weekly rise in prices to catch those who don't know how to buy gas except on Thursday eve and Fridays.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Well ethanol will add more pollution to the entire country, so we'll get even.
thanks!
89 Octane - $3.70
91 Octane - $3.80
These are the lowest prices, the main named stations are charging anywhere from $.10 to $.30 more per gallon.
I received a response to my post telling me that the national average of fuel used is 52 gallons per month. I do not know if this is true or not, but if I could go through an entire month on 2 tanks I would be more than happy about paying $3.70 per gallon. That would mean I would get an average of approximately 80mpg in my Tahoe. As it is I'm getting 20 mpg Hwy right now. When I bought my Tahoe in Jan 2006 it was only getting around 14 mpg Hwy and even less in the city. I've added some after-market parts and a Bully Dog programmer and I love that I get 20 mpg Hwy when everyone else that owns a Tahoe is complaining that they are only getting around 16mpg.
I kind of doubt that the national average of fuel used per month is 52 gallons. At least I know it's not in my neck of the woods/sands. Since I live in the High Desert Area of California everything is approximately 50 miles away to the doctors office, stores, etc. So the mileage adds up quick. My granddaughters live about 70 miles away and I go see them at least once a week and that takes a full tank by the end of the day. So nice try about saying the national average is only 52 gallons per month, but I rather doubt your right.

Life is full of compromises. It sounds like being remote is the decision you made. I like driving a full size SUV or PU truck also. If I was making trips 50 miles to the doctor or visiting family I would get another VW diesel and live with a little less comfort.
Last fill-up in Hawaii I paid $3.27 per gallon. The Trailblazer averaged 18.18 MPG. I doubt I would have gotten that good with the Escalade I wanted to rent.
The same station today 5/10/07 is $3.31 per gallon.
Time will tell if it goes down as soon as last year.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
April 27th I filled up the tank of my new Prius (11.9 gal tank) for $23.92 (Shell). Still had some gas left in the tank. Price was $2.83 per gal. I am looking at 52 miles per gal. around town. Still have half a tank left.
Price per gallon now in Evansville, IN just went to $2.96 per gal. When one station goes up, almost all the other stations follow. Take care.
kcram - Pickups Host
$3.60 - 87 Octane
$3.70 - 89 Octane
$3.80 - 91 Ocrane
It seems to be holding steady at this price now for the past week even though the price of oil has come down considerable. I can't imagine what Mobil and the other oil companies net profit will be this quarter. You do understand that they are making 15 BILLION every 3 months in PROFIT or MORE.
They continue to use the same excuse, consumption is to high and not enough oil is being produced. If this where true then why in the past 6 months hasn't any gas station closed down because they ran out of fuel. Obviosly we are being lied to again. Sure we might be using more fuel, but that doesn't mean that there isn't enough to go around. I really wish that they would come up with a different excuse for the high prices, as this one is getting old.
Yesterday I had to go to a VA appointment in Sepulveda which is about 95 miles from my home. After the appointment I filled up there and by the time I got home I averaged 20.6 mpg. Not to shabby for a big SUV. It doesn't get this stock. I had to replace the Spark Plug Wires, Spark Plugs, and add a few other aftermarket parts plus a Bully Dog Programmer, which is awesome. I like the raw power that it gives my Tahoe, but I don't use it for that. I use the programmer to get better mpg. I also drive slow, but in the long run it's worth it. I get over 450 miles on a tank of gas now. Before I was lucky to get 325 on a tank.
I get better mpg than a lot of cars out there do. Sure they advertise 20 to 25 mpg, but that depends on who and how it is being driven.
I can't wait for another update from Bully Dog so I can get 25 mpg.
And yes I do have a lift kit and big off raod tires, etc on my Tahoe. It weighs thousands of pounds and still I get 20.6 mpg. I'm sure that I would have gotten 24 mpg if I had continued on the Hwy. The average was still going up when I pulled into my driveway.
The thing is, everybody could do this. All it takes is slowing down and not going over 55 mph on the Hwy. Set the cruise control and enjoy the ride. Sure you have to plan to leave a little earlier, but in the long run you will be happy when you see how much you have saved over the months because you drove slower, did not take off like a jack rabbit from the stop and kept your tires inflated and vehicle tuned.
GOD BLESS AMERICA

It is not as high as last year so far in my area. Started a bit earlier to rise than last year. I like the daylight savings excuse.
