    Has anyone figured out a convenient way to disable that incessant BONG, BONG, BONG noisemaker that warns of the key being in the ignition when the door is open? Any help and you will be in my prayers! Thanks

    polk drivers are good and so are mb quart(German, most pros use them),Alpine DDS(Nippon), and boston acoustic, if you want single point source go for Tannoy(english,my choice) dual concentric 6.5s, pricey but have true high fidelity and 175 watt capacity if you go for an amp, McIntosh(American,Clarion owned) have heavy duty power supplies as do Orion(American) and will drive 1ohm and not overheat).

    In regards to comments on lame stereo systems.
    Maybe you have the time to spend at home with your headphones on, but some of us spend a lot more time in out trucks than we do in at our houses.
    Therefore we like a good stereo in our trucks.Toyota came up short in this regard. I have a 99 Limited 4-Runner that has twice the sound my Tundra has.In all respects I love this truck but will have to replace the speakers to see if that will help.
    PS. Anybody thinking about buying the 6 disc indash. Pass on it and go to an aftermarket., your money will be better spent. My 6 disc jammed up three weeks ago and I am still waiting for a replacement.

    I would love to buy American Cars and Trucks but they just don't come close to matching the quality of the [non-permissible content removed] stuff. I replaced 4 transmissions, 2 fuel pumps, motor mounts, 3 water pumps, radiator, and had more rattles than you could ever imagine on my buick. All my friends that drove the [non-permissible content removed] cars just put in gas. I deal with sales reps on a daily basis and cruise in their cars all the time. I always ask how they like their cars. The people with american cars all tell me they have lots of problems and wont hold on to it for more than 3-4 years. The people who drive the [non-permissible content removed] cars all want to buy the car from their company as they know it will last 10-15 years. My friend is on his 3rd tranny on his Ford Exploder in less than 40k miles. That is plain sick! My brother has had his water pump and fuel injector fail on his 96 Chevy truck, not to mention many other little problems. This was at 38k miles so they didn't cover the repair. If the American cars are so great, why do they only offer a 36k mile warranty on the drive train. Why do they depreciate so much out the door? This is a no brainer guys. You Toyota bashers need to make a site called: repair.com

    Look, pal. You're alright with me. Even if you did practically call me a Degenerate Communist Atheist in an earlier post. We're all car guys, and everyone knows that you get a bunch of real men together talking about cars, some folks are going to be Mustang guys while others will be Camaro guys. In our case, it's the 'non-full size, vibrating, crappy-clock-having, hype-truck' Tundra vs. the 'proven' domestics.

    If it's any consolation, Barlitz, my mom's boyfriend, a seriously loyal IBEW guy from Arizona blew a head-gasket when my mom told him I bought the Tundra. He called me at 12:30am on a Monday morning to chew me out about not getting an F-150 like his. Your disgust was nothing compared to his, and *he's* the guy boinking my mom.

    And another thing: Personally, I believe domestic cars and trucks are practically equal or better than their Japanese counterparts. Both sides of the Pacific have made awful crap that should never have been built, as we all know.

    The 1970's are over for American car-manufacturers.

    ... In fact, I'd have no problem choosing a Corvette over the best Japanese sportcars Japan has to offer. If I could find a fool with one, I'd trade him my Tundra without even considering the deal.

    Toyota and good stock stereos is contradiction.
    Howevever, if you DO like the stock stereo look, which
    I do, you may just want to add better speakers and a real nice amp. An independant audio installer CAN install a new, seperate amp that will work with most stock stereos.

    the reason there's so much extraneous junk on this thread is...we don't have much to talk about. No reliablity problems or horror stories. Toyota trucks are boring...they run without trouble, look great and are basically that best friend you take for granted.

    ok....back to the truck....got one on order with a bed mat....(first truck for me,as you can tell from the questions) I don't plan on hauling alot of stuff. Mostly plywood and lumber. Am I making the right choice? Will the sides get trashed in day in and out use over the years? Is the tail gate still exposed? or is the mat two peices? I could still call for the bed liner if someone talks me into it.....

    I have owned two 4x4 trucks over the last ten years -- a Nissan 850 and my new Tundra. Immediately after I bought each of them, I had a black ABS plastic bedliner dropped in. I can't imagine doing anything different. For the week I drove my Tundra before the dealer had a liner ready for me, I felt so vulnerable I refused to let my girl place a metal tube lawn chair in the bed because there was no liner. I'm just that way.

    I just can't imagine spraying in some rubberized goop into my bed, waitng for it to dry, and calling it a liner.

    I can also tell you that the story of how plastic liners rub off your paint is a falsehood. When I removed mine off the Nissan after 9 years of service, I found enough dirt to plant a palm tree along with some mud-dauber wasp nests near the tailgate. After I hosed it all out with a high-pressure hose, there were no wear marks to be seen and the paint in the bed looked absolutely brand new. I never had problems I have seen with other plastic liners -- ripples along the top of the rail where the liner seems to have warped a bit. Mine was always straight as can be. Maybe it was because mine was factory Nissan?

    Anyway, if you want to line your bed, I emphasize getting the plastic liner over a bed mat or a spray-in job. I just don't see the point of a spray-in: If a skip-loader dumps a shovel-full of bricks into your bed, the bed floor will cave in and dent along with the spray-in liner. With a plastic liner, you'll get the resilience that will allow your bed to survive no matter how bad the plastic liner takes it in the shorts.

    To save maybe $100 spraying the goop in over getting a shiny new form-fitting plastic liner makes zero sense to me. I know there's a topic already started on this issue, but I'll be damned if anyone in there made any sense at all.

    So the downside to a plastic liner is you maybe lose a few cubic centimeters of cargo space at the sides?

    Get the plastic liner: It even has a neat Toyota logo at the rear, too.

    I agree with the above post. I have the drop-in
    Toyota bedliner in my Tundra. I also own a '92 Ford Ranger. Have had the bedliner for 7 years. I removed the liner a few months ago, had a little dirt but the paint look like new. The Toyota liner is not that overpriced. MSRP on it is $299. I purchased the aftermarket liner for my Ranger when new for $200, that was with a discount coupon from the Ford dealer at the time

    I have a 97 T-100 with the bed mat and I love it. True the sides get scratched, but you can set almost anything in the bed and it won't move and it just looks neater. The ABS liner allows things to slide all over and I'm sorry, in my opinion it cheapens the look of the truck, the Tundra that I drove for a week had a Toyota ABS liner and it ruined the look and lines of the truck even with that little bit sticking over the top edge, again just my opinion. I had an ABS liner in my old Datsun and it rusted out underneath. I ordered a mat with my Tundra and will probably have a spray-on liner added.

    I have had my Tundra for about three weeks
    and I absolutely love it. I traded a 1998 Z-71
    extended cab for my SR5 2wd access cab.
    Prior to my '98 Z-71, I owned a 1992 GMC
    Sierra extended cab 4x4. In my opinion, there is
    no comparison. The Tundra is the best truck
    I've ever owned. I was able to negotiate a deal
    for $800 over invoice ($25,900) at Milton Martin
    Toyota in Gainesville, GA, approx. 40 miles
    north of Atlanta. If you're undecided about the
    Tundra, put your fears to rest. This is the truck
    to buy!!

    I just drug my hubby to the Toyota dealership to test the 2wd Access cab Tundra-and he loved it, we are going to get rid of his Dodge Ram 1500 and get the Toyota. We are probably in the minority, but we want front bench seat, and cloth at that.
    The dealer had 8-10 Tundras on the lot, but the only one with a bench front seat was blue, and I am not a fan of blue.
    I saw someone mention getting some accessories online I think. A bug guard among other things. Does anyone know where I can find a website or catalog?
    We are both exited to be getting rid of the Dodge, we both had a fit of patriotism awhile back and bought American cars. I know some people have great experience with theirs, but not us (I bought a Ford). Anyway, we've done our duty, and now it's on to better things.

    Hello everyone,

    I just wanted to say thanks to all of the information everyone has posted. I just bought my new SR-5 Access Cab 4x2 on Tuesday. It is Sunfire Red with Oak Cloth interior. I have the 3 in 1 cassette / cd combo; fog lamps; convenience package; 16x7 aluminum alloy wheels ; floor mats ; and the factory installed towing receiver hitch.

    Sticker was $25,139. They installed an awesome alarm systen with keyless remote for $488 additional.

    Unfortunately, I was not able to negotiate a discount from sticker but they made up for it by over allocating the money for my trade in. on the other hand, they were not adding additional dealer mark-up or any un-needed options that i have seen other dealers here in southern california do.

    one dealer had his 3 tundras marked $5000 over sticker. another dealer was selling at sticker but had taken out the cloth factory seats and replaced them with leather at $1500 additional. they also added $1600 chrome wheels etc,... in essence taking a $25,500 tundra up to $30,000.

    my dealer had 12 tundras in stock. 2 were demos not for sale, 8 were pre-sold before they ever came off the truck and 2 were available, from which i bought mine. there were 3 other families waiting to buy mine if for some reason i decided against it after my test ride....... fat chance!!

    i have read other posts that talk about a rattling center console / divider...... well they are correct. It will need to go back for adjustment, i have to rest my arm on it to keep it from making noise. that does not seem up to par for the usually excellent fit and finish that toyota's deliver.

    the v-8 is excellent, but the ride is a little bumpier than i expected. i'll deal with it, and i'm sure it will loosen up a little over time. i only have 180 miles on it.

    P.S. I saw 2 limiteds there for the first time, although they were already sold, there had not been any on the west coast yet. I don't know if they are different enough, but it would be nice to have the option of a 6 disc factory CD. The tundra stereo is ok, but i think all the other posts got it right....... it should have a better factory stereo........ thanks everybody

    The Tundra is an excellent choice. Someone mentioned getting a bug guard from www.detailshop.com I haven't tried to get mine yet, however. I also chose the bench seats. I found them more comfortable(mostly due to the armrest position) and more practical(3 across seating if necessary) for ME. A suggestion I would give anyone is to definitely get your Tundra with the fender flares. They improve the look quite a bit. Good luck with yours.

    I live in the DC area and bought my Tundra June 3. Purchased it $1500 under list. Some dealers where charging list back then but now all are discounting. Most discounts stil around $1500. Have not seen any Limiteds yet but several dealers now have a few Tundras on the lot for sale.

    As for the bug guard I have the Lund. Got it locally but I did the website mentioned above www.detailshop.com does carry it for about $55.

    Regarding the fender flares I did see one at the dealership I bought my Tundra. It was an SR5 with black plastic flares. I did not really like them, seems rather large.

    Was any drilling required with your Lund deflector? Also, does it have those rubber bumper type paint protectors? If so, are the bumpers on the Deflector itself or do they attach to the hood with double-sided tape? My Tacoma had the bumpers on the hood and I hated it.

    I have gained wonderful knowledge from this board and have made my feelings known about Toyota's, GM, Dodge, Ford, etc. I have been a loyal Toyota buyer for 8 years. I have owned a MR-2, Camry, 4Runner and a Tundra. All good vehicles BUT they have ALL had problems within 6 months of purchase. AND drive my vehicles like a "Grandma!" Meaning ... I treat them GENTLY!

    The MR-2 had to have callipars replaced, the 1997 Camry had to have a "Gadget" replaced on the transmission, the 1999 4Runner has a vibration in the steering wheel which is being fixed by replacing the steering wheel with a heavier duty steering wheel. My 1996 T-100 had to have a $2500 part fixed somewhere in the steering and also had a recall on the head gaskets! AND ... now, Toyota has issues a TSB (Toyota Service Bulletin) for SOME Tundras! Not all! But some of them! Unfortunately, mine is one of them!!! The center console has a bad vibration! Toyota will TRY to fix this by replacing the old steering wheel with a heavier steering wheel. They also have to rotate and balance the tires! HELL!!! My tires DIDN'T even have WEIGHTS on them! This is a $30,000 vehicle for "Pete's Sake!" No wonder it rides so rough! Furthermore ... TOYOTA has to take my truck to ANOTHER tire store to balance the tires because the TOYOTA service departments in Oklahoma do not yet have the technology to do it accurately enough!!! WHAT? This is CRAZY! I almost hit the ceiling! Oddly enough ... the Tacoma's have a similar recall! They call it a "Rebound Vibration!"

    I DID ask about the engine catching fire problem that someone had mentioned and that is a FALSEHOOD! No truth to this at all!

    Should ANYONE have to go through this after only owning a truck 3 weeks? Maybe I should look into buying a GM next time! If the Tundra has one more problem I might be done with Toyota! Did I mention that it took THREE phone calls, to different dealers before someone ACTUALLY wanted to help me?!

    Then I ask about accessories in the Toyota parts dept. They don't even have a bugshield available yet! HUH? I feel like I'm in a scene with the "Keystone Cops!"

    I hope others have better luck with there trucks! You should check on the TSB!

    The Lund bug shield requires drilling four holes under the fron of the hood. There are two 'L' shaped brackets that need to be installed. One is installed 6.75" right of the center of the hood the other 6.75" left of center. The other two holes are near the end of the shield. There is NO bumpers that need to be attached. I know what you mean about those. I have a '92 Ford Ranger that needed those things. I stuck them on the bug shield instead of the paint contrary to what the instructions said.

    There is no need for these on the Tundra shield, there is plenty of room for the flexing shield. Even at high speeds the shield never gets close to the paint.

    Hope this helps, I too went to the Toyota dealer first to see if they had a shield, they were clueless so I had a local truck accessory store check it out and he found the Lund for me.

    you couldn't be more mistaken about bedliners vs. spray liners. first of all, it is NOT a falsehood. the plastic bedliner DOES vibrate and take the paint off. i drove 5000 miles with mine, looked underneath, and plenty of worn spots through the clearcoat. (my liner is railless which looks cleaner, but the tailgate is fully protected...)
    so i took some foam (canopy lining) tape and strategically stuck it all around the bed and then replaced the bedliner... we'll see if that does the trick (and it may stop the vibration which is what removes the paint and promotes corrosion).

    anyway, spray liners are far superior (and MORE expensive) to bedliners. no slip, lifetime warranty, no corrosion, no cracking, no warping, no loss of space, no theft... just better. (sharp impact wise, maybe the liner is more resistant).
    either way, they're both better than a bed mat.
    that's my 2 cents.

    They have a copy at the dealership! Its for certain VIN #'s only! They have the same problem in the 4Runners and T-100's! The newer Tundra's have been fitted with the heavier steering wheels.

    They have had my truck for SEVEN hours and still no word if the problem is fixed! Toyota can't seem to balance my tires without outside help!

    The "Head Cheese" at the service department didn't even know about it until I brought it to his attention! GEEZ!

    The TSB oddly enough is not considered a recall ... YET! If you have a vibration in the steering wheel or console OR your ride is rough ... NOTIFY the dealer ... IMMEDIATELY!

    I hope this helps everyone!

    I made a copy of the TSB! Demand one from the dealers service department!

    Can anyone tell me if the problem is with the bench seat console/armrest? If so, how is changing the steering wheel gonna impact the seat? I'm looking to purchase, but this has me suspect that the Tundra is not standard Toyota quality.

    I had a Mazda for 10 years with a standard bedliner. It never warped because I got a Good brand(pendeliner) They make many of the factory ones. Ask who makes it or you will get a warp down the road. As far as rust or wear, I never checked. I also have always used a bed mat with the liner. You can pull it out if you want heavy things(large screen TVS) to slide and put it back for most everything else. I was so cheap I cut my T100 mat to fit my Tundra. Just a little clip next to the wheel well will do it. The dealer told me they have had some problems with the spray on ones, but if they have a lifetime warranty they could always fix it?

    I believe you have a good case for the lemon law. Write to your States Attorney General. Do not tell your dealer. Wait for the paperwork and mail it registered return receipt to the dealer and demand a refund not another truck. Go to the nearest GMC dealer and buy a real truck. Stay Cool.

    Just ordered a new Tundra, SR5, access cab, ABS, Alloy wheels, Convenience Pkg, Fog Lamps, CD , Bed Liner and All weather Guard Package, 2 wheel drive and CD Changer for $1300 under MSRP.

    Did I get a good price?

    I believe this so-called vibration problem is a hoax. I have 3000 miles on my tundra and have NEVER experienced any vibration problem due to low tire pressure or steering wheel-That sounds lame and a cheap shot. I have also changed rims from the port alloy to Toyota's own factory five-spoke alloy. I believe proper wheel balancing from an experienced tire center can avoid any "VIBRATION" problem. Please do not let the ford and chevy diehards keep you from experiencing a mighty fine vehicle. THANKS

    Just a comment on my experience with Bedliners and Bedmats. I installed both (factory Toyota) on my 1996 Tacoma (mat under the liner). For the absolute best protection, I can't think of anything better. Yes, you need to fill gas can's out of the bed and things slide around (toyotas come with tie-down hooks), but they don't allow your bed to be dented up as I have seen spray-in liners do, they don't discolor, and you don't have to worry about someone else messing up your truck when they install it (you don't want me to go into detail on that one - I could write volumes). Here were the steps I took, and when I remove the mat and liner once a year to clean out any debris, it looks absolutely new with zero scratches:
    1. Put clear vinyl tape on the top of the bed rails. 2. Put foam sticky tape on the underside of your bedliner where they will contact the bedrails. 3. Install the bedmat 4. Install the bedliner.
    The foam tape makes up for the lift that the bedmat creates under the bedliner. You can also add clear vinyl tape to the top of the tailgate and lower edge where this may rub. So I've been accused of being detail oriented! The least I've gotten for my previous used Toyota's is $800. over high book! Taking care of your vehicles pays off in the long run.

    I've read the comments on bugshields and thought I'd pass along my experience. If you can, I'd suggest waiting for the Toyota bugshield. On my 1996 Tacoma it required no drilling or brackets and fit perfectly. Also, concerning the bumpers, they are designed to go on your hood! That way, as the bugshield flexes, it hits the bumpers and doesn't do any damage to the vehicle's paint. If the bumbers were on the bugshield, as it flexed it would make contact with the painted surface (often dirty and dusty) and scratch and wear the paint over time. If in the future, someone wanted to remove the bugshield, they could simply peel the bumpers off the hood and it would look new.

    This challenge "conversation" for all of us "Truck Lovers" is only available in America. Where you can speak your mind, pro or con for anything that makes us better, faster, more intelligent humans or more tightly knit as a society. I for one appreciate the honesty and valuable data that has throw around here in the last month. I know more about this truck than most dealers, factory employees, and sales staff. This is a tribute to the information age. That is until Y2K arrives and we all regress to horse and buggy, Har Har! Although I know more about the Big three American trucks than I ever wish to know, I feel I have selected and critiqued this Tundra deal to a sound valuable decision to purchase the best vehicle "for my needs". Thank all of you for the contribution. If this post doesn't make you Ill, I will send a note after a few hundred miles on my Tundra when it arrives.

    Okkkkkk...so I have a SR5 on order to show up in September some time(so they say)....but happened to drive through a dealers lot and there she was..a 4x4 Access Cab Limited with running boards,ABS,CD changer and Leather in sunfire red. It was my first sighting of one here in New England. Well when the dealer said it just came in(must of been a special Sunday delivery)and it was still for sale...I almost dropped to my knees and cried...but of course I pretended not to care to much....well the next mistake I made was to sit in it. All I can say is do this at your own risk. The feeling of the leather and comfort blew me away. The SR5 seats and cloth are depressing me just thinking about them....... there were people all over this truck. I had to pull the dealer away from someone else and tell him lets go inside and talk....I felt like I was racing against others to make a deal....they were sticking to there guns pretty good. I have a trade in which always seems to screw things up. Well it didn't happen, I walked....it dosen't bother me with the amount of money they would be making from my offer... but its down right pissing me off that they aren't happy and want to squeeze you some more...Well the dealer called me a few hours later and offered to split the $800 difference we had...now I have them just were I want them....ah right!! Told him to call me in the morning......I can't imagine that this truck is going to last long...and forget it...I'm not telling were it is!!

    Why did I have to see a Limited?? Why did it have to have leather?? Why did I sit in it?? Why wasn't it sold already? Why do I now have to come up with a few more grand? Someone shoot me!!

    My dealer had an unannounced delivery of a white Limited recently, also. It was equipped exactly the way I ordered my SR5 except for the color(I luv that Thunder Gray). I was very tempted but decided to wait on mine. The Limited didn't last more than one day on the lot. What are you gonna do? September is not too far away. Decisions, decisions! Enjoy.

    DOES THE TRD PACKAGE REALLY COME WITH BFGOODRICH TIRES AND BILSTEINS LIKE THE BROCHURE SAYS? HAVE NOT HEARD ANYONE COMMENT ON THIS. ALSO ANYONE DONE ANY SERIOUS OFF ROADING IN THEIR 4X4 TUNDRA - HOW DO THEY FEEL GOING 50 ON A WASH BOARD ROAD OR CRAWLING UP A SANDY HILL? ANY WORD YET ON AN AFTER MARKET LIMITED SLIP??

    can someone provide me with some hard facts about t100todd's claims/complaints? as i mentioned in earlier posts (way back), i, like a few others, thought my tundra rode stiff with a slight bit of vibration (in the steering wheel and console, but i didn't notice it too often and when I rotated the tires at 5000m, this made ALL the difference...maybe we're all just not used to new, stiffer than hell trucks with new shocks and new, overinflated tires ... either way, i have NO probs with my 4X4 sr5 access v8 with the alloys and i'd like to learn more substance to todd's claimed service recall...
    and isn't todd the guy that reported getting 12mpg a couple weeks ago? see resp# 63. 12mpg? either he rode around with the brake on (as I suggested at the time of his post) or maybe his truck was set up for TRD full off road baja racing (with canted wheels)?...
    or worse, maybe todd's another basher in poor GM disguise? do tell more, todd. i'm starting to smell something.

    i'll have you know that the tundra FLOATS like butter thru washboards at 50mph... i was steelhead fishing and camping on the deschutes river just yesterday, and the drive was over 40 miles of rocky dirt road and gravel (mostly washboard), and at all speeds, even at 20 (where you normally really feel washboard) i was very impressed... SMOOTH as silk.

    Picked up my Thunder Gray 4x4 SR5 AC Saturday.Has most options including Security Protection.I have driven 175 miles no complaints.Very smooth no vibration,has Dunlop tires.Real impressive acceleration it will keep up with the so called Big Boys trucks.I don't plan on towing 12000 lbs. horse or cattle trailer I would have bought Diesel for that kind of work.It will be good up to rated capacity.I like the fit and finish typical Toyota.Yes I have been under it not looking for oil leaks like some other new trucks when I got home with them,just admiring the quality and workmanship.The transmission has label AISIN AW you can find this site interresting .Transmission cooler standard,engine oil cooler standard how many production trucks do you see that on? Don't have any trouble seeing the clock Don't like the clock because it tells me time to do something besides driving the truck.Gas guage is between half and three quarters.Have a good day.

    The TRD pachage comes with B.F Goodrich Rugged trail T/A and the bilstein shocks.I live in the Northwoods of WI and always drive on washboard roads and the ride is good. The TRD package was worth the money.
    The TRD decal looks cool too.Black and red on a thunder grey background.

    The October issue of Motor Trend's new mag Truck Trend has just come out. They put the Silverado, Ram, F-150 and Tundra head to head. Although they have the pluses and minuses for each vehicle they said that the Tundra rates first in their opinion. A close second was Chevy, then Ford and lastly Dodge. They said the only category that Dodge won in was styling. The Tundra won in fit & finish, maintenance, road & interior noise, overall utility features, city driveability, highway ride.

    The misses were; rear seat room, driver comfort, styling. Overall I agree with their observations but I am sure glad others like our truck of choice. Even if they didn't I still love it.

    Now there's a magazine who's opinion I respect. Dodge may have won in styling but it's still a Chrysler!
