Well they still refused...Thats it....you can only be pushed so far...After the bull about how my trade is only worth 14k...I blew a nut..I told him "I have in contract $16900 for my trade do you want to see it" no they didn't I said "So the dealer who gave me that price must be smoking crack? What the hell are you guys smoking over there" Just a see ya later and the phone call ended...I'm kinda glad it fell thru...I was feeling really guilty spending that much. I am now looking forward for my black SR5 coming in in a few weeks...I just wish they would call back just to give them a hard time. If they offer it to me at my last offer, I will laugh and tell them that offer was yesterdays. Todays is $800 lower....so back to the waiting game....hey do you think taht dealer is reading this? L
i'm sure it feels all nice and cuddly, but it's a truck, man! leather is too much maintenance... and too much money! save the leather option for the lexus, and hang tight for your sr5. it won't disappoint.
dch
I think leather is very low maintenance, is sure doesn't spot like fabric is cool in the summer and is very comfortable.
To JCM1. Hang tight. The dealer you are talking to sounds like a jerk. Don't give in. However if you really like the Limited I suggest you find one at another dealer.Don't settle for less then what you really want or chances are you will not be happy with it.
Good Luck.
Tuck.
today.
Anybody know what the average wait is?
I had one ordered once before but canceled out cause dealer ticked me off. Did business with him for 12 years and got a better deal from his competitor.
I feel like a little kid waiting for Xmas to arrive......shezzzzzz!!! I gotta grow up.
But if you feel like playing poker, and this is the same dealer you ordered your black truck from, you could cancel the order, and ask for your deposit back. That will get them in a tiff. On the other hand, if you ordered it from another dealer, and the deal for your trade is too sweet, they can change THEIR minds, if they think they will make more profit, and sell it right out from under you, no matter that you waited XX weeks, or gave them a deposit. Just because you've got one on order, don't stop shopping the lots. The deal is NEVER done until you've handed them the check. There are always surprises. Your present trade could be worth a little less by the time your special order arrives. They give you some buyers orders, or other papers that show you negotiated a deal with them, and take your deposit, but it's all just to keep YOU from shopping until THEY can sell you a truck. They are under no obligation whatsoever to honor that understanding you had with them, and haggled over probably. They can, in some circumstances, be perfectly willing to start haggling you again if they think there is profit to be made. So keep your focus. Even if you gave them a $1000 deposit, just tell the second dealer he can make a deal with you if he helps you get your deposit back so you can buy from him. They will, trust me.
Some of the best tools for successful negotiation are right here on the Edmunds site, in another area.
Seriously,if I could afford a Tundra I would probably be waiting like the rest of you, staring at the phone like a junkie waiting for a fix.
I hope all of you get the truck you want even if you have to pay more for it because of the demand. The years of happiness may be worth it.
This truck is nice, feels like a lexus sedan, doens't necessarily ride like one but looks inside and sounds like one. The TRD package on the freeway is ok but it is a little stiff. But hey, it's a truck, what the heck can you expect.
Any how quibbles or problems, none so far. It has the captains chairs in it and there is not a rattle, or vibration anywhere. The steering wheel feels solid with no vibration at all. The pedal feel is great both on the gas and brake. Turning radius is awesome. Two lane road with small shoulder I was able to pull a U turn no problem.
On to issues. I want more meat on the road but not more tire height, so I want to stick with ~31 inch diamater that the 265 70 r16's have. I am also going to go to aftermarket rims. The wheel flares with the stock tires just look like they have too much room in them. So any suggestions? I can only find a couple tires for a 16 inch rim that are wider and the same height. One being a Dick Cepek tire the Fun country which is a 31 inch diameter, 11.5 inch wide 16 inch rim but they are spendy (some $210 per tire - ouch). I would prefer not to go to a 32 or bigger tire due to potential issues with the abs and I want to keep the gearing the same.
Anyone else put aftermarket tires and rims on their Tundra and what did you put on???
On to future stuff, Friday I get my Line x spray on done, over the rails. And I still need to get a bug guard. Any suggestions on that? where and how much - if you have one do you like the look of it and the install? Also I want some rubber work mats that will hold water or sand and such and keep it off my carpet. Any aftermarket work mats available??
Still waiting for the alarm and running boards to come in to the dealer.
As far as the stereo goes, what is everyone moaning about? I don't know if the six disk unit sounds any different from the normal 6 speaker unit but it is pretty nice. Granted radio recption I have had better, but not too bad and put a CD on and it is pretty darn good. I was prepared to swap it out when I bought it but I am not going to now if that means anything to any of you.
OK you folks probably are wondering what I got it for. Had to drive out of town because in a recent go round at Thomason auto group (slime ball leave you feeling like you need a shower scum of the earth dealership of the world) in Portland OR I headed out to Longview WA. Didn't get a screaming bargain, but what can you expect when your one of the first and it is their first Limited. 1K under MSRP total done and said. Ya they made their money on me but there just aren't many of these around and personally although more than the competitive domestic offerings I thought it was worth it. Plus regardless of how much info you have on them dealers are preselling these with ADP, at least that is what I have been finding, your mileage may vary. Mileage I can't comment on in that I've only put 300 miles on it so far so I haven't had to fill up yet.
That's it for now, if anyone is interested I'll do a followup as things progress.
One last note, for those bashing this rig, I can't see where you are coming from. I drove all the top of the line trucks before buying the toyota. They all were nice in their own way but in my eyes the toyota just was a nicer rig for my purposes.
Good luck,
Carl
Thought I would share a comment about Toyota customer service. I had an aftermarket alarm/keyless entry installed about 10 days ago from a 'professional' installer. The alarm works fine but I notices that there were several scratches in the lower kick panel and panel below the steering wheel where this installer had to take them off to get to the wiring harness. He certainly was not very careful with his cordless screw driver and other tools. I called the dealer to see if they had any type of touch up paint for the interior, they did not, only paint touch up. Shortly before the installation I received a video from the Toyota Mid-Atlantic division with a letter from their president thanking me for the purchase. So I thought I would write him telling him how pleased I am for the truck and about the scratches that this installer did. Well about three days after I sent the letter the service manager from my dealer called me and said they would take care of the scratches by having a Toyota rep from the regional office come down to repair them, even though they were caused by someone else. I dropped the truck off late that afternoon, picked up a new Toyota Corolla loaner and the next day the Tundra was repaired beautifully, at no charge. When I looked at the repair invoice they coded the charge to "Toyota Goodwill Repair". Now this is customer service.
Cwirth,
Glad to hear about Toyota backing you up! Try that with a Chevy and see what happens...nothing.
But the advice to keep looking remains. When I bought my truck, I had one on order too. When I found my eventual truck, it was on another dealers lot. I called up my salesman and said "Get that truck for me." He did. Dealers can trade out allotments, or other trucks between themselves. It's not unusual they have a truck/car that someone else wants, and the dealer that needs it has another one, or an allotment that the first dealer can use in return. So keep looking. It ain't over till it's over!
Is that red limited still out there?
Let me tell you about my experience with one dealer. I test drove the Tundra on May 8 at a dealer close to my home. I wanted the Sunfire Red but they said out of the 5 SR5s coming at the end of May all but a green one was sold. He said he could hold the green one for me. Green was my third color choice. I did not do anything at that time since he would only come down $1000 off MSRP so I left. On May 20 I went back, we negotiated more and I got him down to $1500. He said, "Oh too bad you didn't buy the last time because the green one has been sold". Oh well, it was my decision to wait so you snooze, you lose. He said the next allotment would be in July 1.
Well about 1 week later I drove by the dealership and saw a green Tundra in the lot. Knowing that the salesperson was off that day I went in the showroom and another salesperson came up to me. I asked whether that green Tundra on the lot was for sale. He said yes. At that exact moment the sales manager, who knew me from the previous visit yelled, I mean yelled loud across the showroom and said "You know that is not your truck, yours won't be in until July". There were others in the showroom and they all looked over at me. I tore into that sales manager. If fact another sales person was trying to close a deal in a desk nearby and he moved them to a desk on the other side of the showroom. We were in a shouting match, he said "What do you want me to do build the truck for you?" I was steaming. I got my $500 deposit check back and bought my Tundra, in Sunfire Red, from a dealer 1/2 mile from my office. They beat the other dealer's deal and then gave me $1200 more on my trade. Overall I did much better.
I think the first dealer wanted to try to sell the green truck at MSRP and was going to let me wait. Later I found out that the July 1 delivery date was actually closer to the end of July. So they lied about that too. It all worked out in the end. I would never buy anything from that dealer.
Great story. You proved with an anecdote exactly what I believe some are capable of.
Jcm1,
I bet you don't have a valid sales contract. You need a VIN number for that I believe. The paper you have more likely proves to the dealer that you negotiated a price and gave them a deposit. And that they can hold your money, and sell you a truck if someone else isn't willing to pay more for it first. An ethical dealer might not, but the temptation is strong. It's called buying time. It's okay for you to play the game, because the potential reward for you might be in the form of a better price.
But when that black truck comes in, jot the VIN number down if you can. I think Cwirth is exactly right. Maybe you could have someone else make a call on that black truck for you, on your behalf, when it comes in. Make sure they get a different salesman. With two "hits" on it, the dealer or sales manager may play harder, so it's risky. But all is fair, because they might otherwise tell you it's on hold for another customer. You could ask them what money it would take to get that other bidder's spot in line. If you up the offer, then guess what? The other bidder's deal fell through! Too bad for him. Congratulations. They extend a hand to shake, and say you just bought yourself a truck. They might have been willing to sell the same truck to you later at a lower price. There might not have even been another bidder. They need trucks on the showroom floor to get other people to come in and make deposits. But for the right offer, you can drive one off the floor today. So I would consider your black special order truck a fall back option. If it comes in before you find one on a lot, then great. But time is money. You can probably get your deposit back, even though they told you it was non-refundable.
Three people tried to buy my truck before I could get there with my $...even though it had pre-sold tags hanging on it. My dealer would NOT even let the potential buyer's sit in the vehicle. I imagine your dealer will do the same. It is much better for them to sell to you and keep you as a happy, REPEAT customer than to tick you off and have you tell all your friends not to buy from them. They can always get more Tundras to sell to others. The more they sell, the more Tundras they can have allocated anyway. Everything will be alright. The wait is worth it!!
Average overall mileage from day 1 to present (currently @ 14,000 mile mark) & yes, I check and record gas usage EVERY TIME I refuel = 17.7 mpg
Mileage increased 1) when tire pressures were adjusted, 2) when topper was installed, and 3) after about 4,000 - 5,000 miles of use.
FYI - worst was 14.5 mpg (brand new / 1st tank)
best was 18.9 mpg (3 hours @ steady 70-75mph on the interstate)
Tom
Fortwhitetom,
Tell me about your "topper". What brand? How does it look? Price(if you don't mind me asking)? I am interested.
rwell,
All I did with mine was to change the air pressure in my tires. The pressure ranged from 23 lbs to around 36 lbs. All I did was try to even them out a little. I am having the tires balanced this afternoon also. I want to make sure the balance is not out of whack like the P.S.I. was. By the way, I think the Tundra drives like a Lexus, too!
I cannot believe how quiet the cabin is or how smoothly this thing accelerates. It is FAR superior to any other truck on the market in terms of ride and engine smoothness. The domestic lovers may be able to complain about the size or styling of the Tundra but they can't HONESTLY criticize the ride or engine. If they do, they lose all credibility with me.
I really think the Tundra is a great size truck and sounds like everyone agrees the ride and engine are extra smooth. So quit telling all your buds out there so I can get the dealer to march down from that MSRP quote!
Truckless in Houston.
Think I am hooked
To the people in Houston:
The Tundra STINKS!!!! Hope this helps Kirbyt
Mentioning seats, has anyone seen or compared the new Limited power buckets to the stock? It sounds as if bench or buckets do not make a big difference to the folks buying them. Do the bench seat backs have adjustments similar to the buckets?
Thanks to all for the comments and tips shared on the forum.
fender flares on a sr5? Or what I mean is can you
get them and add them on yourself later.
Funny you should ask that but I am also interested in getting color matched fender flares for my SR5. Let me know what you find out. I searched the Net for aftermarket flares. I e-mailed a couple of sites and they said that they do not have fender flares for the Tundra yet but will let me know they are avaiable.
Waiting in Kansas, Tim
FYI(all):
I couldn't help topping off the tank with another 4.8 gallons of 87 octane this afternoon.
14.3 MPG
Albert
I saw my first Limited today on the lot of a local dealer. It seems that the mud flaps are different for the fender flare equipped Tundra as compared with the mud flaps that come with the SR5. So am I correct in assuming that if I go with fender flares on my SR5 that I will have to replace the mug flaps.
also, if you're looking for a nice canopy, snug is making one in the XV model (it's the best, but around $1600) and check out Legacy ($1300). Raider (in Canada) is slow to produce, but worth the wait (around $1400).
