Has anyone see Front receivers for 2000's yet ? I have found front receivers for 98's and older but not 99 and 00 trucks. I have always had front receivers on my trucks and I miss it on this one. Got a quote from my local welding shop yesterday, seems pretty high and I would rather get a bolt on anyway but I will go for it if I can't find one soon.

By the way they are great for hauling boats out a low tide when your rear wheels would be spinning in slime and they are wonderful for putting a trailer way back into that tight little spot in the backyard. Oh yeah, I also have a Warn winch on a receiver mount just in case i get stuck. Speaking of winches, any one wire one up on their 00's yet, I was just wondering since they take a LOT of power and these trucks all so much electronic junk on them.

Can't you get them with a convex mirror? Do the "Super Doodies[sp?]" (haha) have a convex passenger assy? I'm not a big fan of those mirrors, but it looks like if someone goes out of their way to order them, they would be expecting 'premium' reflections from the sides of the truck.

Typin' skills, don't fail me now!

Wheel flares, P265 tires w/polished wheels, and I don't think GMC puts 1500 or 2500 on the doors, but I maybe wrong there. Either way I take those 1500 stickers off and you won't be able to tell the difference. Other than my small 5.3L that blows your big, gas sucking, 6.0L away. heeheehee don't need to carry more than about 1500 pounds in the back, so why bother with that big piece of .... Take care...

Look for 2 ground straps near back of cab (1 per side), they ground between the frame and cab.
Side on the frame are loose (intentionally), lube em up, Squeak is gone!

    Rich,

Usually I would only put nerf bars on a truck as most boards are lame. But those are bad [non-permissible content removed] boards. they are pipe on the outside like nerf bars...and steps on top. SS to boot!

Same height?....local dealer has all configurations all lined up...several different heights. Mine is taller than all of them. They are all 1/2's.

    Reality....Who cares?..not me.
    I care about 1 truck - mine.
I wish you all the best of luck...but it don't take no skin off my back. (sorry)

1/2 has more pep due to weight and gear ratio...but I doubt it will blow it away. Toss a trailer / cap / camper / load back there...and hammer it.......See ya later Grasshopper!

Even empty I'll smoke your [non-permissible content removed] from any highway speed. As mentioned before...Trucks drag racing looks tooo damn dumb for me. Highway passing and 40-55 on local road passing is where it's at for me. But all in all...again...who cares?

    blahh blahh..yada yada

    I got beer getting warm.

    Later T.G.!

Where you been? I thought you'd post to my comment in about 5 seconds. Bet you been out spinning around the block. Is there a web sight for your running boards? I went looking at accessories a week ago. Saw some stainless steel Nerf bars with a step on the top. They looked well made, but I never heard of them before. MAAP. Also looked at Roll-n-lock covers like I have now. The only thing that has changed is the price. But they had another brand there called Specialty Cover. It is electric. Looks well made. Has a remote also. Lot of money. Saw a news item in Trailer Life today that Chevy will have their heavy line of pickups in 2001 with the new diesel. Seen that here before too but if we read it enough it might happen. ... Rich

I was going to wait a few more days and make sure the fix lasted... A few weeks ago I posted a similar complaint about low speed squeaks during take off and over light bumps, sometimes during stops.

The dealer told me it was the drive shaft going into the Transfer case slipping in and out (as it should)and that was causing the squeak. He said the solution was to drain and refill the Transfer case with the Blue Juice. He told me the service bulletin said it would take 100 miles to solve the squeaks but he would lub the yoke at the same time and the squeaks would go away immediately. I was not convinced but I though having the Blue Juice would be a good thing to have and agree to take it back.

They did the service two days ago. When I picked it up that night, no more squeaks. I'm not sure if they did anything else, but the squeaks are gone. It was more of a very brief chirp when taking off or going over a light bump.

But they fixed it. I'm not sure if it will last or not?

My truck is a 99 Sil LS/Ext autotrac z71 5.3l auto. It had about 9000 miles when this started to happen. It was manuf in Jan 99. Is yours similar age, style and miles?

I tried to look for the grounding straps as was recommended. But could only find one that attached the bed to the frame (in front of gas tank). It was in no way loose or near anything that would squeak. My truck has the extended cab. I wonder if the gent had a standard cab that recommended this fix (I'm sure it worked for his squeak and was worth checking). In any case let the dealer try this Blue Juice fix.

As a side note, please comment after yours is done. I have a concern something is not right. Before this work was done. When the streets are wet the truck has lots of rear wheel-spin, so I use auto mode when wet. Before, I could stomp on it and I could hear the rear break away for an instant then no slip at all. Now it seems the rear continues to slip longer than before. I am concerned with this Blue Juice that the clutch plates are not grabbing as well as they did before. Its only my observation as of today. Let me know what you think after its done. I may go back and talk to the Serv Mgr about it.

Yes, the BODIES sit higher, which makes it harder to get into and out of and also harder to put anything over the rails of the bed. However, when looking at real ground clearance, which is what a higher sitting truck should have and what is useful offroad, the Ford has 1.2" LESS ground clearance than the GM trucks. Sorry, I am referring to the 1/2 tons. Not sure if that is the same for the 3/4 tons and up.

Ford - 7.3" ground clearance at the lowest point
GM - 8.5" ground clearance at the lowest point

Ford owners always key in on worthless so-called benefits such as this. Its like putting a body lift on a truck. Does nothing to add capability. Actually, it reduces its useability more than anything.
  • planejaneplanejane Member Posts: 167
That was very interesting - you answered something that I was thinking about for a long time, cause a friend just bought a 1/2 ton V6 Ford reg cab pickup - and when the two trucks are sitting next to each other - makes them think there's is tougher looking. NOT! I will point out the clearance. Awesome.

No I haven't received my truck yet. It was due in tomorrow, Friday, but the dealer called and they just put it on the train so it is due in the local train station Sat. at 11:30pm. All well and good except I'm off on a week vacation as of Sat. morning! So the dealer has to store it for me.

I have mixed feelings about the mirrors. It's great that they telescope in/out but I wish they were power and convex on the passenger side. I agree with wang2 that a tow mirror should have good visibility, otherwise why order them?. The Ford SD goofy mirrors look like they give a great view with separate flat and convex sections. I hear they are going to make those telescope too. What will we have left to make fun of???

My comment was for you, you gave me a good chuckle.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Tell me why someone puts so much energy, money, and TLC in a truck they intend on keeping only two years? I think you are a good fellow to buy used cars from.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Anyone find a good price on Putco Skins (rail caps)? I checked with the local cheap parts store here, Kragen, and they want $235 for S.S.. That's not much discount off the Putco web site price although it does include delivery.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Rich,

Dave40 Beat me to it...but Putco.com is where to get them. I really like that style.

The electric cover sounds cool. With a remote? How lazy have we become boss?...hehehee

    Vince,

As said before..Pepboys prices suck..and Autozone was the best for the Putco so farr. The skins and rails were not much cheaper...but the boards are like a few hundred and some change cheaper. My other sourse is slacking off....so perhaps it's gonna be Autozone real quick.

Being a harder truck to come by..(3/4) Mine will sell no problem in 2 years. I bet I sell it for a few thousand less than i paid.
As mentioned several times...I wanted to lease...needed more miles...high payment...ended up buying with zip down and only about $50 more a month. End of 2 years I got $7K left over after I sell the Truck and pay off the loan. Put that down on another new one...payment goes down $125...two years later...same thing..except perhaps $12-14K left over...buy another one with that down...etc etc.

It all works out to be a few hundred a month for a new truck all the time. I've done this before..and it works. I was getting hitched a while back..selling a house..buying a new one and decided to keep one for a while...a long while. it worked out also...had no payments for a while...but it just ain't the same as that new truck. I love the old one to death...still got it..but I seem to hardly ever drive it for some reason..
So i've gone back to the old method. I also drive 22-25K miles a year and that adds another problem with keeping one till it's buried. Don't wanna spend $30K plus finance...to keep the same truck 10 years. I can pay $30K and have half dozen or more.

Sit down one day and do the math...

I spent hours on this....it works.

    I really gotta go now.

Can someone give me the scoop on what exactly the difference would be if I got a 3.73 instead of a 3.42? I know the gear ratio is higher, indicating that the engine would not have to work as hard for the same rpm, but a dealer told me the difference is negligible unless I plan on towing a LOT. I've read where the 3.73 doesn't reduce mileage much at all, but it's suppose to make the truck perform better. I'm planning on getting a 4.8L with the 3.73, but all of the trucks in this area (Southeastern Virginia) have a 4.8L with a 3.42. Would appreciate some help deciding.

If your neighbors Ford has the off road package it may actually have more ground clearance than a Chevy. Fords off road package includes 17"wheels and larger tires.
  • markbuckmarkbuck Member Posts: 1,021
Recently started seeing 'em for the '99 and '00. Ya, I'm thinking about one too. Think I saw one by Warn for their winch, bout $180 for the front, think Cabela's had it in a recent catalogue. Also seen one in a performance products catalogue I looked at last night, will bring the catalogue in to work next week.

I'd get the Warn model, they have good stuff.
  • RichinKsRichinKs Member Posts: 412
Even though the big three generally all give one ground clearance, it varies within any make as all three have at least two tires sizes. .... Rich
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
    Go with the 3.73, you'll never regret it. I have a 99 Silverado, 4.8L, 5spd, 3.73, 4x4. The 4.10's would have been a better choice.

The 4.8 is a small engine and the gearing helps a little. With the 3.73 I run about 2000 rpm @ 70mph. The 3.42 would drop that to 1800. The first hill will cause you to downshift. Mountains will be even worse.

I have 20,000 miles on my truck and all most all of it has had a load in it. If you plan on never hauling, or staying only on flat interstates then you can get by with the 3.42. Otherwise I would heartily suggest the 3.73 is a better choice.

    Mike
You won't see any mileage difference between the two gear ratios, but you will see some power difference.

    For Jim and anyone interested--

Back on 2-20-99, when I was 17, my parents helped me cosign for a 99 Silverado 1500 LS Z71 ext. cab, 5.3L and solid black. Boy was it a beauty. My dad went ahead and got the extended 5-year warranty, which at the time I thought was a waste of money, but he said since it is the 1st year build a lot of things could go wrong that they didnt catch.

Okay--first item on the list: at 3500 mi heard a "brrrp" sound on acceleration, lost power. Went back to dealership, said nothing was wrong according to their computers, I was hearing things. So took it to different dealership and made the master tech. ride with me to hear the noise. He heard it and after one day of tests called me back and said it was fixed. Turned out the engine bracket was mispositioned and the compressor mounting bracket was broke.--Lost my vehicle for 6 days between the two dealerships.

#2--at 4000 miles, just 1.5 weeks after I got it back last time, the power driver window would not come up with the glass down. Motor and regulator was replaced.

#3--at 5500 mi., accesories would not work including lighter plugs. This was mostly embarising because with my truck I was on the local news with my friends at a Dallas Cowboy game having a tailgate party. With my hood up trying to find the right fuses that they go to, some guy in a 99 Dodge pulled up and yelled "should have bought Dodge" while the camera man was taping. I felt sick to my stomach. Had all the fuses that needed replaced, replaced.

#4--at 6000 the windshield noise, and the rear ext. cab noise started about the same time, still havent fixed that, only annoyance, saving my complaints for bigger things.

#5--at 6500 the infamous squeak starts. This was about the time I found this place. (THANK GOD) I was beginning to believe that I was the only person to get a faulty Chevy. Took it into Lynn Smith Chevrolet, Burleson TX to get fixed--bad idea. I have always kept it stored in the garage, to keep it from the elements, the weekend that I gave it to Lynn Smith they kept it outside, and guess what--it hailed!!!! And trust me they had plenty of room in their covered garage to keep it, I checked. I wouldnt be half as mad at them if they would have taken responsiblity and had it fixed or at least put in on their insurance which I know they have, but no they said they didnt have responsiblity for the truck when my dad signed some waiver to get the truck back. Filed it on my insurance and told them what happened they will try to get the estimated $600 minus $100 deduct. from Lynn Smith, so far they havent corrected themselves but I will be the first to tell you if they do. Will now let different dealer fix squeak, trust me already tried ground straps--not the problem.

I bought the truck to accessorize myself but have only bought bug shield and line-x because of all of the problems I am having with it.

If I ever get it fixed to normal I would like to plan on getting Westin Step bars, Borla exhaust, some ignition system (Jacobs, MSD), Car Cover, Headers, Superchip, Smittybuilt (or Ram off-road) front guard, Supercharger (Paxton or Whipple), and upgrade in tires.

Hopefully, though I can get my old, new truck back to the way the first 1000 miles were soon.

Please feel free to comment on any accessory or brand that you have dealt with.
    THANK YOU LOYAL CHEVY OWNERS!!!--Kurt

Have any of you taken a look at the floor mats GM gives you. Thin flat rubber, with neither fabric or grooves to trap water, snow, etc. I'm looking at them and say no way these are going to be of use in Winter.
So they're getting thrown out soon. Does anyone know anywhere that has some "high-capacity" or nice floormats at a decent price; Walmart? PepBoys, etc. I've seen ones advertised in Road and track etc, but don't want to spend that much + shipping.

F250 Superduty is only 1/2" more than than a 3/4 ton Silverado.

    Tim,
Your right - I damn near got a 3/4 ton, but just couldn't quite make the payments. 1/2 ton is a little cheaper, so I get a little 3/4 ton envy, but I'll take you on at highway speeds - gas mileage was another concern - are you able to get 18-20 mpg on the highway - I still have some time to change my order.... Take care

For the people who have installed an Airaid/K&N system on their silverado; did you notice dramatic performance increases? Was it worth it? How easy and how long did it take to install?
Also, saw a Sierra with the Trail Master 4" lift today, man did it look good!
    Thanks

That was a very interesting post you wrote about selling your truck after only two years. I read it over a couple of times and, you know, I think you are right. I still have my 1985 Silverado 4X4 (only 60K miles on it) and plan to keep it forever. A month ago I ordered a 2K Silverado 4X4 LS X/C with almost everything GM has to offer. I never thought of selling it early but I may reconsider after reading your post. You make good sense. I see how, for the same money, you can drive a new truck every two years and not get tied up in a lease. However, it may be that I get too attached to it and can't let it go. I have trouble selling anything. (you should see my yard) Anyway, thanks for the info. When my new truck gets here, I'll post a picture.

Anyone know the possible cause/fix of a muffled clunking sound coming from the rear undercarriage especially noticable during turns while driving over stutter bumps? Also, my leaf spring forward and rear clamps must be lubed every couple of weeks to prevent squeaks...seems ridiculous. Anyone aware of a permanent cure?
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
I wouldn't waste money on the MSD, look at your motor you have a coil for every spark plug. Which gives more volts then needed. Cant's belive
MSD would do any improvement. Ever since HEI I don't see the benefit to any of the high power MSD, ect.. ignitions.

Also folks watch what you do to the exhaust. This motor is touchy about flow and setting codes if you start changing things. I belive all you get is a better sounding exhaust. 10-15 hsp is not much of an increase to notice. I f you ask me.

Someone needs to put a whipple supercharger on tell how it performs. Now there is an add on.

Wow! What a streak of bad luck! The problems with the new truck are bad enough but then the local news thing and the hail thing are just like having salt rubbed in your wounds. Almost sounds like the story-line of a bad sitcom. Sorry to hear that you had to go through all that.
On the bright side, though, you're the owner of a brand new Z71 at the age of 17 (or 18 now?). The car I drove at 17 was a '77 Chevy Nova (this was in 1984) with a dog of a motor (I-6) and only an AM radio. It wasn't even mine, it was my dad's commuter car that I drove around after school. Then after high school I "moved up" to an '80 Chevy Citation for college commuting (it was the most I could afford because tuition took every last bit of my savings). It was yellow and rusty and had the worst hesitation problem a car could have. It took me 1.5 years after I got my Ph.D. to get my new truck (actually it's a '98, but I still call it new. I got the '98 GMC Z71 3-door x-cab as a leftover when the '99's first came out. I was thinking of getting a '99 but it was the first month out for them and the dealers wouldn't budge from MSRP + "prep charges". I got the '98 for $200 below invoice minus $750 mfr. rebate minus $400 college-grad rebate minus $2300 GM card rebate. It was a great day! $21,100
out-the-door for a loaded, full-size 4x4. An even better day was the day I paid off the loan!
    "Woo hoo!" -Homer Simpson)
Well, anyway, here's hoping you start having better luck with your truck from now on. Once all the bugs are gone, it should be a great truck that will last as long as you want to keep it.

I agree with 26andrew1 that you shouldn't waste money on a Jacobs or MSD. The new coil-on-plug design is very hi-tech and probably the best system available.
I'm finding other things on which to waste money. I bought headers, a cat-back exhaust, and Halo spark plugs (see www.halosparkplug.com , they're very novel looking). I haven't had time to install any of them yet to know if they're worth anything, but at the very least, I'll be able to say, "My truck has headers, a cat-back dual exhaust, high-performance spark plugs and a K&N filter." At which point, all the women within ear-shot will instantly fall in love with me and begin disrobing.
    Cool huh?

    1. REAR HUB PLAY: While trouble shooting for a muffled metallic knocking/clunking while turning over stutter bumps at low speed, I pushed the rear of the bed back and forth and heard quite a bit of free play clunking coming from the rear hubs. Dealer says this is normal but it seems abnormally loose. Anyone got any advice on this?

    2. ACCELERATION/STOPPING SQUEAK: My Z also had a squeaking problem at around the 8,000 mile point mainly upon acceleration from a stop. The remedy was to lube the driveshaft yoke as mentioned by someone else.

    3. BAD VIBRATIONS: For those having vibrations at speed, the dealer mentioned to me that they have recently ordered special tires to help cure the problem but will only issue the tires to those who come in with the problem.

    4. LIFTER CLATTER: At the 10,000 mile point, my 5.3 clatters for about 5 seconds upon the first start up of the morning then quiets once the oil gets to the lifters. The dealer said it was since I did not have a Delco oil filter...yah, sure. Does anyone know if this lifter noise is out of the ordinary?

    Paul
  • lvstanglvstang Member Posts: 149
There's a cool independent test on oil filters out here in cyberspace somewhere, I forgot where I found it. Anyway this guy cut up various filters and basically said Fram oil filters will cause lifter noise due to some internal check valve thing. If memory serves me right the best filters were Mobil one, Delco, Motorcraft, and I think Wix. Some of these filters are made by the same companys with different labels. Like Fram makes Penzoil etc. This is all off of memory so if anyone knows the site to find this info let us know. What really sux is that I was a Fram user for years not realizing their shortcomings.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Since the filter is mounted down, oil doesn't drain out when the engine sits. So I doubt a filter owuld cause the noise. Even a Fram filter would probably not cause noise. It won't filter much and it might burst from pressure, but noise? No.

I would appreciate advice from experienced truck owners.

I am debating whether to purchase a Z71 or a 2WD LS 1500. The 2WD would meet my needs fully, but I love the look of the Z71, particularly the way it sits higher. If I put 265 or perhaps larger tires on the 2WD, would it sit higher and would the drive train not be effected. This may sound silly, but the 2WD with 235 tires sits too low IMO. Would the 2WD ride better than the Z?

Would appreciate any advice for this inexperienced buyer. Thanks!

I I just bought a set of floor mats from Target stores for my 2000 chev silverado 1500 and they cost me 19.95 they are made by Kraco Ind. and they have a lifetime warranty, they are truck& sport utility 2 piece set. I don't know how much water they will hold but they are 1000% better than the originals and a lot cheaper than others I looked at. Good luck Oh one thing I really liked they are made in the USA.....

I just bought a 2000 1500 chevy z71. I don`t know if any of you are having squeek problems but I am! The dealer replaced the cab mounts on the drivers side thursday and by friday the squeek was back. It is driving me crazy to say the least. The squeek got worse after they changed the mounts. I sure hope that they can fix it or they are going to take the truck back. The noise is terrible! Anyone else having noise problems out there? I would appreciate the info.
