    Bookof,

You don't need synthetic to last 7 years...but it don't hurt.

    Rich,

The Oil Cooler Does come with the tranny cooler in the 3/4 towing package. When I ordered it..he said it was showing no charge for it...then discovered it came with the package. KC4 was not listed on the invoice..but it does say ENGINE oil cooler in the towing package. Looking through the grill you can see them all.

    Rwag,

Looking forward to the pics. Due in Dec. Eh?..Congrats Late...Abviously you already tried the FRONT seat trick several months back?..LOL!

    Enjoy

I have been reading the list for some time now and thought it time to contribute...

Cindy> Have you thought about forgoing the 3/4 ton in favor of a 1/2 4WD? It will beef up the suspension a little and give you the taller height of the 3/4 ton. I'll bet you could rewrite your order on paper, swap the 3/4 for 4WD 1/2 and your dealer could run a locate and find want you want. But if you are adamant about it, DON'T GIVE IN. Buy what you want, drive what you want...

COLORS> Am getting out of a 96 GMC that was indigo blue. Prior to that I had a 93 Chevy that was Black. Wife has a dark green Malibu. All were/are very beautiful - the black was absolutely stunning and the blue was the best looking color period. BUT... There is no way in hell to keep them clean. The wife doesn't mind the dirt so much, and only drives 1/2 mile to work. Buy I love a clean truck. I drive 15 miles to and from work each day, behind lots of "rock-trucks" (Semis hauling gravel, sand, dirt, etc.) and I cannot keep it clean. It shows dirt and dust bad. The real bummer is when I wash it. 15 min later it shows dust. Another problem is scratches and dents. They tend to stand out. I also notice scratches in the clear-coating because they are much more visible. But if you can keep it clean, go with the Blue.

SPRAY IN LINERS> I read through the post on this topic. I think anyone who buys one of these liners to protect their bed from dents caused by 30+ pound rocks being dropped in their bed is missing the point. Think of them as a substitute "paint" for your truck bed that will not scratch. My father has a Rhino and so did my in-laws. Dad owns a construction/dirtwork business and has used his extensively. It has been outstanding and has no nicks, dings, etc. It was a no-brainer for me when I got my new truck. My old truck did only light hauling but looked pretty rough with all of the scratches on it.

REBATE> My old salesmen (see next note) left a message on the phone and said to come back, there was a $500 rebate just released on the 99s. I investigated, but edmunds shows it only on the V6s. I have also seen a $750 rebate on any 99 that was built before April 15th, (not C/K pickups). Don't know if this will help anyone.

NEW TRUCK!!!!> Okay, after reading post after post about everyone's new rigs, Matt finally got into the action. Just made the deal on a 99 CHEVY 1500 LS 4WD Z-71. It has the std LS options plus 5.3L, Tint Glass, Aluminum Wheels, Z-71 pkg, and I am having a Rhino liner put in. It is summit white and looks great. I have seen several white ones with the chrome trim and got bit by 'em. My price... Invoice of 25630 + $200 + TTL. Here is the funny part. I picked out the truck on a locator. Went to my "long-time" friendly salesman and he said $26770 for the truck. This was also on a deal getting $750 less for my trade. Listened to a friend, went to the other dealer. Salesman their said $200 over invoice sight unseen and then gave me $750 over other dealership for my trade. This without knowing the other deal. I showed him the locator, he went and got the truck and we shook hands. I pick it up on Tues or Wednesday after the bed liner is put in. I'll give a report on it then.

Observations made regarding 2000 Silverados On Dealer's Lot - Springfield, IL

Tailgate Protector - All "4X4"s (not Z71s) and all base Silverados have the smaller protector. All other Silverados have the large whale-tail protector.

Colors For 2000 - I has been reported somewhere under the pickups topics that Dark Copper Metallic has been dropped for 2000. It also is not shown in the 2000 Silverado brochure. However, this dealership has a 2000 Silverado 1500 LS Z71 extended cab with short fleetside box in Dark Copper Metallic with medium oak leather interior. It is all one color and was built in Roanoke, IN.

Fender Flares - The above truck also has factory installed Dark Copper Metallic fender flares that are listed on the manufacture's sticker as an option for $180.

    Matthew:

I am intrigued by your comment about a rebate. I saw one other reference to one at some web site that listed prices. My 3/4 ton was built on Aug 23 and I am due to pick it up in about a week, so I wonder if it will effect my price. If a rebate has been offered will it automatically be deducted on my invoice or do I have to trust my dealer to pass it on to me? My contract is $200 over invoice. Does anybody else know anything about this? Thanks,

    Paul,

As far as I know, the $500 only applies to 99 models that have the V6 engine. I have seen this on Edmunds and another auto-website. My "former" salesman assured me today that No, the rebate does not only apply to V6s, it applies to all 99s as well. ???? I don't know if I believe that or not, guess I would have to see that in writing or on the web somewhere.

What I do know is this; when you make your deal, (or any deal), you will sign a form for the dealer concerning rebates. I believe this form acknowledges that the dealer has made you aware of the rebates involved and/or transfers the rebate to the dealer so it can be applied to your purchase.

Here's a question for you guys, (whoops, And Gals), where is the best website or catalog to browse for aftermarket accessories? I am really curious about aftermarket performace items, i.e. larger air filters like the K&N, etc.

    (And others interested)...

I FINALLY took some pictures of the switch and motor for the PowerSlider rear window. They are from Polaroids, so the quality is lousy ... but I did use Photoshop to at least get slightly better color.

Have considered going 1/2 ton, either one will definitely be 4WD. Not sure what I am going to do yet. Still thinking.. and waiting.. Even though there are lots more 1/2 tons, there seems to be a shortage on extended cabs out here. Actually, trying to be as close to my 3/4 ton order is going to be difficult. Will stop by the dealer this week (if I have time) and see whats on the lot. I am leary of the 1/2 ton with 5.3, seems there's an oil leak problem going around, boy would I be frustrated if I got stuck with one. So far, heard no problems with the 3/4 tons at all. If I can afford to wait, I will, but current vehicle turning into a BIG money pit during the waiting process.

Here is a great site/catalog for aftermarket:

I am planning on ordering a 2000, regular cab, short bed. I noticed several hundred posts back, the V8 question was very dominate. But I am thinking about the 6 cylinder. The truck will be just a back in forth to work vehicle. Nothing to tow. Any comments. Thanks.

No leak on mine at 3200 miles. I guess it's time to change the oil, by the way ...

Tomorrow is order day, I'll check on the dark copper paint, if it's available they can paint one for me. second choice dark carmine red. I spoke to the dealer on fri. and he said 10 to 12 weeks, that would put the build date near the rumored fourth door release time. should I take a shot at ordering one, and possibly delay my order. well here it is.....2000 LS extended cab 4*4 5300, dark glass, rear slider, firm ride suspension, trailer package, locking differential, aluminum wheels, graphite interier cloth. I will add a tonneau cover and mud flaps when I take delivery. I live in western Pa. and the roads are salted heavily in the winter, I'm considering ziebart rust proofing, any opinion pro or con, I have a few months to think about it. My girl friend said it is like expecting a baby.....a baby wearing a bowtie!!!! Thanks for listening, everone at home is tired of hearing it. Capt.

    Rwag,

Those pictures are not that bad. Motor is smaller than I thought....what about a pic of the Window itself.
I always said a slider in an extended can should be power. I didn't know until not that long ago..that you could get one.

    Cool man

I would be interested in hearing if you can order the 4th door. My dealers tell me an order cann't even be created with a 4th door yet and it will probably be October before the system will allow it. I sat there while they tried and you cann't even select it. There is a note on the screen that says production is scheduled for November. ..... Rich

I'm thinking of buying a 2500 LS. Drove one Saturday with a 4.10 rear end and it seemed very touchy (quick off the line). Just wandering what kind of gas mileage one would expect with a 3.73 vs. 4.10 (and of course the standard 6.0). Can anybody tell me since it is not posted on the sticker?
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
cindy gave the web site for Performance Products a few posts up. I have their catalog and they have nice range of stuff however I did a little comparison shopping and found their prices high. For example the slip-on tow mirrors from Ciba (or something like that) are $65 in PP catalog and about $45 in the Camping World catalog (not a bargin center either!). I'll probably end up buying my floor mats from PP but I'm certainly going to look around first.

BTW, did anyone order or have a Silverado with dual batteries?

Just curious, was wondering if you didn't get the dual batteries, if there would be room to install one later OR would they only make room for them at the factory with an ordered one?????

    Thanks. Cindy

I have some info about rebates. In a recent chevrolet (gm) newspaper ad it said there is a $1000 cash back for trucks: REG CAB 4x4 5.3 and EXTENDED CAB 2x4 with the v-6. SOme of you were talking about 500 and 750 cash back well here (chicagoland area) it is $1000 but only on selected models. Vince im in the same boat as you cant find any good aftermarket accesory websites or anything. A local store here has some stuff you can order but id like to see stuff online. I also get the PP catalog and they are expensive my dad just got a deflector for our 2000 blazer and paid $58 and in the magazine it is around $80. Anyone install a brush guard??????????? When i get my truck im thinking of getting one. Is it hard to install and do u have to take out the factory tow hooks??????? Please let me know im curious. Thanks

No oil leak in my 5.3L 4x4. 12,800 miles.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
No rebates that I have seen in Southern California. Must be regional.

Tim: I didn't take a picture of the window itself because it doesn't look much different than the factory manual slider. No latch, obviously. It is dark tinted to match the rest of the truck window tinting (clear is not available ... or wasn't when I bought mine). The way it is installed, you'd really never notice that it is any different than factory. It's really a small unit that doesn't show unless you look for it (motor and cable assembly).

I like it a lot! So do the dogs. They like to stick their heads through the open window and drool on the rear seatback.

Previously wrote about vibration....anyone know how to find the topic for vibration problem?

Can anyone help with this information:

Have a vibration at all speeds...feels like riding on rough road. Vibration feels all over...steeling, seats, dash, etc.....using Goodyear Wrangler tires on 2000 Chev. LS silverado, ext. cab. 2WD.

Went to dealer today: balanced tires, replaced drive shaft, checked computer(?), no difference noticed. Dealer wants to replace front tires and maybe replace transmission.

Anyone with similar problem please advise?

Has anyone received a GM gas-tank settlement certificate? This certificate can be used on the purchase of any new GM product. You had to have owned an older Chev PU(side mount tank) on July 1996. I have been told that the certificate can even be use with GMO purchases. Any info...?

See topics 615 & 654 for vibration problems. There is also discussion on this topic and in other Pickup topics.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
cindy, there is room for the battery just in front of the firewall on the passenger side. I would think the space is always there but no tray or wiring if you don't order the option. I need 2 batteries (camper) and would order it but it's not available in California because we are special--we get more of that lovely smog equipment you all can't have. So I'll be relocating the smog devices to put the batt in, or squeezing it in somewhere else. Did you go talk to the dealer yet about your order #?

Just saw a fax from my local Chevy dealer that said there is a $500 rebate on '99 Silverado ext. cabs. (near Spokane, WA.)

Have read where the Z71 supension is really stiff and not recommended for normal driving as us picks up every bump in the road

Question is this, is there much difference between the Z71 package (suspension) and the Firm Ride Suspension Package. My main concern is whether the "Firm Ride" option is sufficient for a two stall horse trailer. Does the Z71 offer more stability or a distinct advantage?
  • somales1somales1 Member Posts: 22
No fourth door order available yet, $500 rebate on 99s on the lot, I still hope forth door production does not delay my order, once they tool up I think three door trucks won't be much of a priorty for GM Capt
  • basserbasser Member Posts: 1
I've had the vibration problem mentioned in many of the posts and have had the Better Business Bureau involved for about a month now. The dealer's have tried just about everything, with no success. In addition to the highway speed vibration, there is a shutter upon accelerating from stop, in fact when towing a trailer it is an extreme shutter that causes the whole truck to jump around itself. They've had to turn the brake rotors to smooth out a braking vibration problem, tear the door panels out to fix dome light problems, replace lug nut studs that were crossthreaded from the factory, and some other annoying problems.

Bottom line: I'm going to arbitration hearing in about two weeks and was wondering if any of you have done this before and can give me some insight as to what to expect. Also if you will send me a
supporting testimonial of your experience if they are similiar to mine. The truck is a 99 Chev, 1500, LS, 5.3 litre, 2wd. Any comments will certainly be appreciated, send to tomaycock@rocketmail.com

ok , after reading 3000 posts, I guess I will put mine in. hey vince, I ordered a 2000 3/4 ton reg. cab long bed, 4x4, and I got dual batteries. Im in northern california too. Ive got a 86 chevy that gets like 10 mpg on the freeway and about 6 around town. totally stock, weak motor. hoping my new 300 horse motor gets better than that!! thats the only reason i ordered a new one. i actually ordered the same exact truck only 14 years newer. its black, grey interior(tan on my 86'), 3/4, fully loaded, reg cab long bed. a real truck. i had a 1990 ext cab and found that the ext. cab just filled up with dirty clothes and trash! no kids so i dont need it. if anyones got the 6.0 with 4.10 , reg cab,4x4 , long bed, id be interested in your mpg. also , does anyone know if there is a 6 inch lift kit available yet. i just ordered mine on the 23 of august, i hope its here for christmas!!

There is an entire topic devoted to gas mileage for the 6.0, seems that people are getting around 12-13 mostly highway driving. Not so great but okay, the 5.3 is really impressive at 16-19.

On the dual battery, I'll believe it when you see it! All the web sites I've seen (Edmunds, KBB, MSN) agree that the dual battery is not available with CA emissions. I made a point to ask my dealer and they confirmed that smog equip is in that spot. One salesman (oops salesperson) said there is an aftermarket kit to relocate the smog gear. So you may have asked for it but I bet the dealer's computer spits up. If you find otherwise please let me know.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
That is such a depressing story, after all the time and money GM put into this truck and then to turn out crap like that. As a soon to be owner I cringe reading complaints like yours on this site. I think Chevy trucks are basically sound once the bugs are worked out but GM's poor first year track record obviously still holds. Good luck in arbitration.
  • ovalleyovalley Member Posts: 135
Tom, I am currently going through the same thing. I have a 99 2wd LS reg cab 4.8L 3.42 rear. Didn't have to push to much, my dealer started the process for me. It's been about 6 weeks since they decided to have GM buy it back and no contact from GM yet. My dealership hasn't been a lot of help, but they are trying somewhat. Can you give my some details on how long it took to get to the arbitration hearing? Are you going to go with another similar truck or upgrade? Later, Todd.

I have a question.Has any one ordered the camper and fifth wheel wiring (code UY2)? I purchased a 3/4 LS on 7/10/99 build date of 6/16/99 with the package but just discovered that the harness was never installed on the truck. It is supposed to be located between the cab and the bed of the truck, but I don't seem to have this harness. Dealer has not seen any of these and doesn't know exactly what it looks like. Does anybody know what it looks like so I can go back and question some more. Also does anyone know what it will take to have it installed as One of the main reasons I purchased the truck was because of this option. I do have the rear receptacle and it works, part of the trailer tow package.
  • planejaneplanejane Member Posts: 167
Going to the dealer tomorrow morning. Called and salesdude says about my 3/4 ton order - that "it's in the system" "just waiting for GM to take the order" - OK whatever that means. Well, I said, I don't think I can wait because my money pit '92 Blazer has cost me literally $2K this month with having to fix it (ball joints, u-joints, distr cap, gas sending unit, towing, and 2-1/2 week car rental!) I am losing money the longer I wait, so tomorrow I will see whats on the lot, maybe there's a 3/4 ton waiting (maybe not in the right color??), maybe there's a nice 1/2 ton 5.3 with the right options? We'll see. I just don't want to get stuck with any of the problems I've been hearing about so a '99 model is out of the question!

I have already decided that I am not keeping this truck more than 2-3 years anyway, next truck order won't be so bad considering I will already own a decent Silverado - I could wait forever next time.

I feel really bad for you people out there going through vibrations and arbitration. Quality sucks - I think they are just slapping them trucks together as fast as they can and let corporate or the dealers deal with the aftermath. Maybe the problem is random and not widespread???? Who knows..

Quadrunner: You seem to have escaped the 5.3 oil leak - awesome!

I ordered the Firm Ride Suspension on my truck. Even empty, my wife and I thought it rode too soft. It kind of floated on the highway. We bought some Z71 shocks for it and they are better, but not firm enough. So we have some Bilsteins on order (they are supposed to be released Sept 1 for sale).
Test ride a Z71 at your dealer and see if they are too firm for you. My guess is they will not be too firm.

I have been following your ordeal for a little while now. You may have posted this somewhere before but I'll ask anyway. Have you tried other dealers in your area? Where I live, there are at LEAST 12 Chevy dealers within an hour's drive. There has to be one that will give you a little more assistance with obtaining a vehicle. Just curious about your situation...I hate to see someone have to wait SOOOOOO long for a truck. Good luck.

Here's what I have been told, and experienced test driving 99 and 00 1500 LS Ext. Cab / SB Silverados

If you do not intend on doing more than 60% of your driving in off road conditions (construction or recreational) - do not get the Z71 suspension.

It is not desinged for everyday highway / city driving, and you will find the ride too stiff.

This is the best info I can share.

Ordered my 00 1500 LS Ext Cab/SB 4x4 with the Z85 Firm Ride suspension / Locking Diff on August 16th - I will let you know how it works out when I take delivery in Late November.

    Take care all!

Your brand name synthetic oils, like Mobil 1, AmsOil, Castrol... far exceed the vehicle manufacturer's specs for recommended engine oil. AmsOil backs their oil with a written guarantee and will provide legal representation should the dealer state that the oil was the problem. Of course, if you happen to have one of the infamous oil leaks and run the pan dry, well.....

My dealer just called and informed me that the Ride Control suspension is on hold from GM and that if I would drop it for the HD suspension I would get an order# on the next allocation. Has anyone else ordered their truck with the ride control pkg and received an order#.

    I ordered a 2K 1500 LS Xcab LB.

    gmilbrandt,

I got a 99 Z71 in June (5.3L, 3.73, 4WD LS Ext Cab). Put more than 4000 miles on it so far. It replaced a regular 91 Silverado which I kept for my son to drive. I was concerned about the stiffness of the ride before I got the truck but wanted the off-road package for use here in Colorado. I've been very pleasantly surprised. The truck actually rides better than my wife's Camry. Even she agrees. The new truck definitely rides much smoother than the old truck. Doesn't feel like a truck. Father-in-law farms and has a 3/4 ton. It rattles your teeth in the pasture. My new truck rides a little rough in the pastures but rides very smooth on the highway and around town. When I first test drove it, I intentionally took it down a rough road and tried to hit the rough areas. The ride felt good even on that road. I don't know but suspect the ride was improved by getting the 265 tires. Before you reject the Z71 package, test drive a truck on both smooth and rough roads. I think you'll be surprised by how good it rides.

P.S. - Did I read somewhere that the Z71 package increases the size of the rear anti-sway bar, thus improving the handling of the truck?
  • shamptonshampton Member Posts: 53
    mtrammell -

Ordered my 00 1500 LS Ext. Cab / SB with the Ride Control and got an order # 5 days after I placed the order.

I suspect (yet cannot confirm) that the dealers with smaller business, i.e smaller allocations - try to convince their customers to accept less than they desire so as to make the orders go through the system.

My advice - talk to a larger dealer in your area. As long as this item is not an overall GM issue (and according to the wheels.com update it is not), then it may be an issue with your current salesperson / dealer. Cannot confirm - yet this is what my intuition tells me.
  • mtrammellmtrammell Member Posts: 125
    shampton-

I'm already dealing with the largest chevy truck dealer in the Austin TX area. If the ride control suspension IS available, then maybe I'll go down to good ol San Antonio or over to Houston and see what can be had there.

It's not just the electronic controlled suspension for towing but those 46mm shocks that I'm looking forward to. They're 10mm larger than the firm ride package.

Guess I'll do some calling around and see what I can come up with.

BTW, do you have a build/delivery date yet?
  • shamptonshampton Member Posts: 53
Good luck with the search for the 46mm shocks - I'm sure you'll be able to find them!

I do not yet have a build date, but I have been told to expect the vehicle in 10-12 weeks. Working with the largest Western PA dealer w/the largest allocation.

Hopefully my GMO 1 order will move along as expected and my vehicle will be in around Turkey Day.

    Take care!

I have seen the camper/fifth wheel wiring option. I looked for it on the dealer's lot because I also ordered that option. It is simply a bundle of wires with that black tape wrap they use, splitting off a main harness running under the truck on the driver's side. It is located between the cab and bed and is maybe long enough to reach the top of the bed or so, hard to tell because it comes folded over, standing up vertically in that space. The end is taped up so I guess it just ends in bare wire. It will suit me fine because I plan on putting a metal receptacle in the wall of the bed, the type with the spring loaded flap cover. It's too bad yours came without, I hope they don't screw up my order too. It's not a big deal to put in your own wiring, you just have to splice into the harness. If you don't want to do it yourself have an RV center like Camping World do it.
  • kernickkernick Member Posts: 4,072
My wife and I testdrove a '99 Z-71 ext.cab. It rode very smooth and firm on unbroken pavement. I didn't get to test it otherwise. The truck had the 265 tires on it. I think the stabilizer bars and large shocks keep the truck flat in cornering. It handles great for its height and size.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
They are not slapping them together. The vibration seems to be affecting mostly 2wd trucks with 3.42 axle, as far as I can tell. Something may be wrong, most likely in the design, not workmanship. But the 2wd extended cab, 3.42 axle, rack and pinion, with split driveshaft is the one I would avoid, for now.

Most severe vibrations are not the result of one component just shaking itself. All the driveline components are rotating, and at different speeds, producing distinct frequencies, and mostly unnoticed. It's when certain frequencies combine, new frequencies are created that are a harmonic multiple of the fundamental. Some cancel out, but others amplify due to constructive/destructive interference. I believe if you just stay with the highest axle ratio, 3.73 or higher, you have a better chance of avoiding a critical combination.

But the real crux of the matter for you is that your dealer can't give you a GM order number. They know what that means. Keep looking. When/if you find one you like, deal on it then and there, and don't worry about your deposit. You can/should get it back if they can't give you an order number before you buy elsewhere. You say something like, "I want my deposit refunded since you were unable to order my truck." Keyword is "order." If they come up with an order number for you, then your truck won't be far behind. Stop shopping at that point, and wait the remaining 4 weeks or so. Until then, there's no certainty of anything, no deal, previous haggling all for naught if it doesn't get you a truck. The best time to shop the lots is when the dealership is closed. If you do happen to find one on a lot, you could then ask the dealership you left the deposit with to get that truck for you. In good faith, it at least lets them have one last shot at keeping you for a customer since they were unable to get your order accepted. Worst case, you'll get your deposit back and have to haggle again.

I keep reading about complaints. Maybe it is because people only write if something is wrong. So, to balance it out, I have the 99 LT Silverado (delivered January 12) 5.3 V8, 3.73 with Z71 suspension. 12,000 miles plus and there is not a single defect or problem. No rattles. No vibrations. No leaks. No air noise problems. Power seats work fine. Truck was built in Canada. Mileage is consistently 18+ per gallon. This is the best truck or vehicle of any kind I've ever owned.

im positive that i got dual batteries. i looked at my order sheet and it has ca. emissions and auxilary battery. they even had a 3/4 ton on the lot that i test drove and it had two batteries( i would have bought it if it was black!)the only explanation i can think of is mine is a GMC sierra. maybe thats why? good luck.
